The Beer Line @ McCarren Pool, NYC | pics

By the time Mew left the stage on Saturday, the wait time to get carded, buy a beer ticket, and in turn get one small cup of beer, was ONE HOUR (not an exaggeration). Gothamist is calling it "the beer situation".
Jerry writes, "When we saw them (Bloc Party) at MacCarren Pool on Saturday, the ability to get beer was hampered by having only two locations for 5,000 people. My sole experience of the Secret Machines is from that line."

It was not like that at all yesterday at the Of Montreal/Enon/etc show.
You could get a beer faster than it took me to write this post...30 seconds.

yeah, totally easy peasy and great. I had read about the beer situation and was cold stress'n and bought a bunch of tickets IMMEDIATELY
and found myself able to get a beer SNAP like that

Brooklyn Brewery owner Steve Hindy supports the use of emiment domain to force out property owners in downtown Brooklyn in order to make way for the Brooklyn Nets stadium. In addtion, 85% of Brooklyn Beer is actually brewed in Utica. So much for a "local" hero. Please do not support Brooklyn Beer.

I enjoy beer just as much as the next guy, but aren't people able to spend a sober afternoon instead of waiting for AN HOUR in line??? It certainly seems like an obvious choice to me. I agree, it's f*cked up that it was poorly organized, but come on. I was not at this show, so maybe I'm missing something.

Yeah I just bought all my beer tickets all at once when I first came and it took me 10 minutes to get a beer after Mew's set.

can someone please post a review of cold war kids or midlake instead of the insane lines at mccarren...we all know about the lines! how about the fact that these two bands play their hearts out and are absolutely amazing! everyone should migrate to jersey tonight just to check them out.

So, this hour long line was for the beer tickets, not the actual beer itself?

Just one more reason why drugs are better.
Also, great photo choice BV!

does anyone have a setlist or review for ENON?!?
thanks in advance.

I think by this point in time everyone is keenly aware that Brooklyn Brewery was understaffed. I was there as well and I know that it will not be that way the next time from what I had heard. Other than that, the show was great. Great job.

People act like beer is a civil right. You can always wait until after the show and frequent the many local bars that provide a variety of ales and spirits at a fraction of the cost.
I was at Cold War Children and Halflake on Fry-day. It was indeed a fine a show.

the pitchfork festival had hour-plus waits for atms all weekend (there were a grand total of 2 for, um, 19,000 people! beer lines were oddly brief -- 10 min tops. what does that say about chicago?
Posted by j | July 31, 2006 2:38 PM
sheryl chill out. neither midlake or cold war kids need anymore press, they are doing QUITE ALRIGHT without a day or two of coverage from BV

Musicsnobbery wants to take away our right to drink a show. Oh no you don't!

errrrr... uhhh... *at* a show.

"I think by this point in time everyone is keenly aware that Brooklyn Brewery was understaffed"
UNDERSTAFFED? That's the understatement of the century. It was the most incompetent, poorly-planned display I've ever seen. And thanks, because up until now I didn't even realize it was Brooklyn Brewery themselves that had anything to do with it. I'll make sure to NEVER buy their beer again.
Even after they realized their error, they did nothing about it. How about calling in some extra last minute bartenders? How about filling the cups of beer before people got to the "bar", so the bartenders could just take the tickets and hand away cups? How about stopping the sale of that Polish beer that required the bartenders to use a bottle opener every time? How about walking up and down the line and selling tickets to people that already have wristbands? How about thinking ahead????????????
poor, poor, poor, POOR!

What are they charging for beer? Is it really worth it? Are you that eager to spend your (or your parents') money? Is it that hard to sneak in some Zywiec?
Posted by Klaus Kinski | July 31, 2006 3:55 PM
$5.00 a cup

Are there any blue uniform types to pat you down? Any reason you can't bring in one or more flasks? you know, filled with water?
Posted by john | July 31, 2006 4:08 PM
john, there were blue uniform types, but they didn't do the pat down. as i walked up to him, he said, "what's in those shorts? a cell phone? yeah that's great, keep moving" he said all this before i could answer and tell him that i had tons of illegal weapons and drugs. he let me right through with no pat down. by the way, i was lying about the weapons.

Another reason to buy multiples when you get to the end.

Yeah...the beer line sucked. I got in line before secret machines and got my beer after Bloc party had set up and was ready to play. It was almost comical. They should have at least put the beer away from the front door so that the lines wouldn't cross each other where everyone was trying to get in, but at least we could watch the show from the line.
Most concerts (summerstage, amsterjam, etc) seem to have these "problems". I think they do this on purpose so that everyone isn't completely bombed by the end of the show. Amsterjam was the same way except by the end of it, everyone just stormed the tents and started passing out the beer themselves...we could have tried that, but draft beer probably makes that a bit harder.
To the post asking if we can just watch the concert sober.... no we can't.

there was a third beer tent with like 5 people hammering out beers as fast as they could. 7 minute wait.
Posted by sammy | August 1, 2006 4:29 PM
um... get drunk before? do drugs? STOP BITCHING you poor, poor, trustfund rich kids.
Posted by george | August 8, 2006 5:21 PM
What time did the show start? More importantly, any idea when the YYY will come on tomorrow night? 6pm is early for a show...
Posted by jt | August 10, 2006 6:31 PM
curfew's at 10..so they should be on at around 830ish.
Posted by Anonymous | August 10, 2006 7:25 PM
they have to sell the polish beer. that's the way they show that they are "community friendly". Throwing the polish a bone.
I can't wait until they have a "polish event" there. The word RIOT comes to mind. A few thousand drunk polish people in one place, sounds like a great idea! Call me racist, but I've never seen a congregation of polish men that didn't end in violence. Most often, it's a comedic, wobbly, drunken, can't even land a punch fight, but with a few thousand people- they could do some real damage.
I hope ClearChannel folks will just stick with selling polish beer.

around what time do the headliners go on here for a weeknight show? trying to figure out shins arrival time tonight
Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2006 8:46 AM
anyone??
Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2006 12:27 PM
they have to end at 10. from there just estimate how long you think they're gonna play for, and then do the math.
mu guess is around 90 minutues, so they'll probably be on at around 8:15-8:30.

not too bad
