"'Dancing is not a crime!' New Yorkers screamed on the park side of 5th Avenue and East 79th Street on a Saturday afternoon. About 200 people of all ages and ethnicities moved their bodies to the rhythm of a percussion band, expressing themselves through the most primal art form in human history. They gathered at this designated spot to show they are entitled to the right to dance whenever, wherever and with whomever they want." [NY Press]

It's not dancing per se that's illegal. An establishment must satisfy certain requirements before it can host patrons who dance on its premises. For example, in the event the fire alarm goes off, the sound system has to be wired so that it shuts down automatically.

sisters, brothers, O let us beat the earth with dancing and spray hot wine from our laughing mouths in joyous abandon and revel in the universal beat that thrums through our bones since time immemorial!

Seems ridiculous to stage a protest of dancing with more than one hundred thousand people were without electricity for a week. Where were the real protest? Or the riots?
