You Hear it First: Silversun Pickups & Magneta Lane @ Mercury Lounge & then Pianos, NYC | pics
Silversun Pickups played two NYC shows in one day last week (Aug 3, 2006). That meant I got to hear them play the spectacular "Kissing Families" song three times. First they played it during their kick-ass (and packed) performance at Mercury Lounge. Good thing it was kick-ass too because MTV's "You Hear It First" got it all on tape.
SILVERSUN PICKUPS @ MERCURY LOUNGE | AUG 3, 2006

Later that night they played a free & drunken afterparty-show at Pianos. I found out about the second show right before I got to Mercury Lounge where they also announced it to everyone. It was at Pianos that I heard the song that made them famous again.
SILVERSUN PICKUPS @ PIANOS | AUG 3, 2006

The third time I heard "Kissing Families" was later in the same Pianos set when Lexi Valentine from Magneta Lane joined them on stage for an even more drunk, duet-version of the same song. Magneta Lane opened for Silversun Pickups at Mercury Lounge earlier in the night. They were the DJs at this Pianos afterparty.
LEXI VALENTINE (ML) & BRIAN AUBURT (SP) @ PIANOS

In between the two Silversun Pickups shows, I managed to catch Professor Murder at Cake Shop. (like 2 doors down from Pianos)
A few days later SP played Union Hall in Brooklyn.
And Silversun Pickups just announced a whole bunch of tour dates.

THIS WEEKEND IN BROOKLYN

LAST NIGHT IN BOSTON
"The sun had started to set, the heat of the day has lost its grip on the city, and thousands – 10, 12, 15 thousand — were filing peacefully into City Hall Plaza long before the headlining Yeah Yeah Yeahs were due to take the stage. All the makings of a perfect rock and roll evening were in place as Brooklyn’s TV on the Radio filled downtown with an eclectic mix of organic post-punk guitars and almost trance-y rhythms devoid of the electronic embellishments that are such of big part of the alterna-indie band’s studio sound." Bonnie Prince Billy played Joe's Pub | Kicks off Record Store Tour & more 2006 Tour Dates
This past weekend I missed all four Bonnie Prince Billy (Will Oldham) / Hazel Dickens shows at Joe's Pub in NYC....
BPB & CAPTAIN ANOMOANON @ JOES PUB | AUG 6, 2006 (CRED)

The Oldham brothers, sitting three in a row with acoustic guitars and matching white chinos, opened the show with a set of well-selected covers.Their three voices crisscrossed and harmonized on numbers like "Tell Old Bill," a chronologyblurring traditional song about the death of the title character. Will's voice was nuanced and haunted, rising above the others to punctuate certain phrases; Ned's was full of creaking country flourishes. The two seemed to treat the show as a learning opportunity for young Paul, the baby of the group and the least experienced performer. He sounded flat and shy as his brothers pushed him out of the nest on a few solo verses. [NY Sun]

Trachtenburg Family Slideshow Players: instore tonight PLUS Jason playing Bowery Poetry
The Trachtenburg Family Slideshow Players show at Mercury Lounge last night (Aug 9, 2006) was silly, yet politically charged - musically messy, but entertaining - potentially annoying, but somehow charming, and pretty funny. If you haven't seen them, they play songs that match up with "vintage slide collections found at estate sales, garage sales, and thrift stores".
Tonight (Aug 10th) they're playing a free show inside Tower Records (692 Broadway, NYC). Later tonight (10pm) Jason is playing a solo set and hosting The New York Howl CD Release Party @ Bowery Poetry Club.
Jason is also playing the Antifolk festival, and the whole family is touring.

Teddybears @ Fat Baby & The Annex | pics & review PLUS words by "The Industry Insider"
TEDDYBEARS @ THE ANNEX | AUG 4, 2006

Teddybears "played" two shows in NYC last week. I managed to catch their 2am "performance" at The Annex on Friday night (Aug 4, 2006). By "performance", I mean two guys standing behind a DJ booth pumping their fists in the air. Sometimes one of them moved a knob while the other one aimed a spotlight at the crowd. To their left was a dude in a bear mask strumming a guitar. At first I thought it wasn't even plugged in, but then decided the bear WAS really playing, though barely. The Teddybears might have some fancy friends and work some magic in the studio, but at The Annex on Friday night I couldn't help but feel like a participant in some major-label marketing scheme injected right into the middle of one of NYC's latest hip Misshapesesque parties (I know, what else is new). Oh yeah, there was a video screen in the background, but I could barely see it through all the smoke.
At least the Fat Baby show the night before (Aug 3, 2006) was billed as a listening party (well sort of --- an industry-only "DJ & Multimedia performance"). I wasn't there, but one anonymous "industry insider" was, and they actually liked it. Here's their story....
TEDDYBEARS "LISTENING PARTY" by THE INDUSTRY INSIDER
Listening parties: an industry standard in which labels attempt to get writers, tastemakers and influencers out to hear their newest bands.
In the best case scenario, you get to leave work early to see the band perform live, or they come play a special show in your office. The worst case scenario is a dj playing the cd on repeat for three hours while you suck down free beer and lazily network. More often then not, it's the latter, and you leave questioning why you rushed over from work to see the same people you always do, to listen to a record you have had for two months.
Last night (Aug 3, 2006) was the Teddybears listening party at FatBaby. This upwards of 8 piece band from Sweden has been making their rounds on the blogosphere in the past few weeks with their track Punkrocker, featuring Iggy Pop.
The details of the party were sketchy at best. The main members of the band were there, they were going to be doing some performance, but to what capacity remained elusive. When I arrived, I saw a fog machine, vocoders and massive cdjs being set up, I knew we were all in for something special.
The members of the band have been in the states the last two weeks promoting the record. As their manager explained to me, they were unable to bring the entire band over, so they decided to innovate.
Patrick Teddybear manned the wheels of steel and played the record straight through. As an extra flourish he laid over a Hot Chip worthy amount of fx, vocoder and other delicious beeps and bloops. Jocke Teddybear, who is also in The Ceasers, danced with manic glee to every track, while banging along with a tambourine and manning the fog machine. While all this was happening upstairs, Klas Teddybear wandered around downstairs with a huge Teddybear's mask, drinking white wine with a very long straw.
While this was entertaining, what put it over the top were the visuals. Not content with just being a band, the boys from the Teddybears are also visual artists and have created a visual loop that takes classic movies (Spinal Tap, Aliens, Scarface, etc) and placed their iconic Teddybear head on the main characters. It could have been the whiskey and gingers, but seeing the Queen Alien battle a Teddybear, or a Teddybear gundown wannabe drug lords, made the entire night incredibly enjoyable. It was great to look around the room and see the usually apathetic industry crowd craning their neck to see a giant Teddybear pull a tin foil wrapped cucumber our of its pants.
Overall, the night was great. The new record is fantastic and if every band could promote and get into these potentially boring events as much as The Teddybears did, then listening parties could take on a whole new attitude.

Agent Orange playing CBGB | Tour Dates
"Agent Orange is a punk rock band from Fullerton, California. They were a surf-punk band from the 1980s and first gained attention with their song Bloodstains which they wrote for a local Orange County compilation album........................Agent Orange has had an enormous influence on the punk and hardcore scene, even though band members stated on Living in Darkness that "We don't feel a part of that scene at all." Agent Orange was one of the first bands to pioneer what would later be known as the skate-punk or skate-core scene. They developed a following in Fullerton along with The Adolescents. The band is still together today with few member changes. Their most recent album was in 2003 with Sonic Snake Session." [Wikipedia]
It's not that rare to see Agent Orange play - in fact they just played Continental last summer, but nonetheless they're an original (well one member is anyway) and they're playing CBGB one week before it closes for good on September 30th (well before it moves to Vegas).

Weekly Hip Hop News Round Up (Aug 9, 2006)
KILLER WES
Welcome Wes (the nicest guy in the biz) to BrooklynVegan! He's gonna post about Hip Hop...
KILLER MIKE

Brooklyn may not be the borough that birthed Hip Hop, but it is the borough that perfected Hip Hop. Hip Hop is not very vegan - regardless, BV brings you the weekly Hip Hop News Round Up courtesy of Wes of the not in any way Hip Hop related NYC band the Undisputed Heavyweights.
---
Gnarls Barkley ruled Lollapalooza - At least according to Entertainment Weekly. Click here for a video (via Stereogum).
Outkast's forthcoming album/soundtrack 'Idlewild' to be released December 6th. First single is "Idlewild Blue" for which the video already has appeared on major channels and YouTube (since removed). Potential second single "Hollywood Divorce", not about the group's alleged breakup, featuring Snoop Dogg and Lil' Wayne - leaked. Get it at palms out sounds.
Southern Rap Legend Scarface, formerly of Geto Boys, announces that after 20 years he will no longer release any more solo albums. In addition to guest spots, he will now focus more on production (via SOHH). We shall see about that. Those rappers and their retirements. *cough*Jay-Z*cough*
Mos Def surprises everyone by announcing the imminent release of an album "Tru3 Magic" on Geffen Records (September 26th) (via Nahright). MP3 of "Boogie Man" to be found here. It better be closer to his brilliant debut "Black On Both Sides" than to his sophomore ehhh "The New Danger". Or else!
DJ Premier, Hip Hop legend and creator of the definite gritty New York City sound, produces half of Christina Aguilera's new album "Back To Basics" including the uncreatively titled, but excellent "Still Dirrty". Download it here.
Killer Mike stands up and raps with substance in the tradition of Ice Cube in the early 1990's (when he still was the best rapper in the world). On "That's Right", he speaks on some matters of social relevance including role models, the Bush family, racism, the responsibilities of successful African Americans to their community, and more. Download it at 5151. (off his latest mixtape "I Pledge Allegiance")
The Roots debut new short video clips for "Don't Feel Right" (here), "All in the Music" (here) and "Here I Come" (here) - all from their new album Game Theory. (via TheRapUp)
And finally in the WTF category - Jackass's very own Steve-O nearly loses his life by proclaiming he is the new Ol' Dirty Bastard and proceeding to pull out Lil' Steve-O while on-stage with the entire Wu-Tang Clan during an Ol' Dirty Bastard Tribute, and in the presence of ODB's mother. Partial video at AllHipHop.

Nightlife Safety Takes Spotlight at City Hall (silly politicians)
"What we are saying is that we can't let the SLA control this anymore," said Quinn. "They have done a pitiful job at closing down bad establishments in this city. Therefore we want and should have that enforcement power ourselves. We want to stop the days when the West Side of Manhattan is more like the Wild West."
---
"Now, very soon we will have some of the toughest laws in the entire country and WE WILL MAKE SURE OUR KIDS IN OUR CITY ARE COMPLETELY SAFE when they enjoy what our city is known for, its nightlife," said Queens City Councilman Peter Vallone.
---
"We will work with the City Council to draft legislation that will increase the use of technology to root out underage drinking, increase the use of security cameras and hold establishments accountable when they break the law," the mayor's chief spokesman, Stuart Loeser, said in a written statement.
---
Ms. Quinn dismissed the privacy implications of the plan. "Cameras at places of public assembly are commoplace now," she said, "I don't believe there is any expectation of privacy as it relates to going to a club."

The Foundry Field Recordings | 2006 Tour Dates | MP3s
DOWNLOAD: holding the pilot/holding the facts (MP3)
Missouri's Foundry Field Recordings are a four-piece that play sweet shoegazing guitar pop that sounds like Grandaddy (a lot) meets Nada Surf meets Flaming Lips at their most normal. These are really good lo-fi songs, featuring lyrics full of sci-fi stuff, like robots, clones, the future, technology etc. [Oh My Rockness]
Jackson first menitoned the Foundry Field Recordings, and I've been digging their new album (Prompts/Miscues) too (most of it anyway). Cokemachineglow reviewed it. The MP3 above is from it, plus there's more at Sonicbids and more MP3s here and even a whole free EP here and a MySpace.
The band is touring as we speak and they're gonna play 3 NY shows - one in Long Island, one in Brooklyn, and one in Manhattan. The Manhattan one is presented by Crackers United and the L Magazine and also features Cassettes Won't Listen and Apes & Androids on the bill - @ Sin-e, August 23rd (I hear Jackson might be DJing too). All dates below...

Jackson's Tuesday MP3 Roundup.
Jackson's back....
-----
* There's a song off the latest Vitalic 12" called Bells. Friend and DJ Laz Casanova says, "Bells is a fast paced heavy distorted track (about 137 bpm) with opera-esque vocals by Linda Lamb that actually brings a decent balance to the song. Sticking true to its name the track does feature bells. Not entirely crazy about this one but its high energy can probably rock the right crowd." [Shot Callin']
* New Blood Brothers tracks leaked. Their album entitled Young Machetes is due for release in the fall and was produced by John Goodmanson, (Blonde Redhead) and Guy Picciotto (Fugazi). [Jazz Funk Greats] & [Pitchers of Silence]
* Fans of Q And Not U should definitely check out John Davis' new band Georgie James. Davis acts alongside friend Laura Burhenn, to create music that could take Ian Mackaye/Amy Farina's The Evens down! [Muzak for Cybernetics]
* One band who I think deserves more attention is Toronto's Tangiers (French Kiss). I recently found some CBC Radio 3 Sessions (from 2 years ago) that are great. [B(ool)log]
* One of my favorite album's of this year, (so far) is Souls She Said's As Templar Nites (Dim Mak). It features singer Joe Cardamone and guitarist Don Devore of The Icarus Line. Imagine The Icarus Line becoming some sort of schizophrenic, distorted, yet somewhat happy dance projecy. [Indie Christoph]

"Eclectic artist Manu Chao will tour toured the United States this summer for the first time since 2001. The six-date outing encompasses a previously announced visit to Lollapalooza in Chicago on Aug. 5 and will also stop two days later at Brooklyn's Prospect Park as part of the Celebrate Brooklyn series." [Billboard]
"Manu Chao sings in French, Spanish, Arabic, Galician, Portuguese, English, and Wolof, often mixing them in the same song. His music has many influences: rock, French chanson, Iberoamerican salsa, reggae, and ska, and Algerian raï. These influences were obtained from immigrants in France, his Iberian relations, and foremost his travels in Mesoamerica as a wandering nomad following the disbanding of Mano Negra." [Wikipedia]

9/11 MADE GEORGE TABB SICK (MORE INFO)

Of course it's cool to close your venue with friends, and I'm sure there will be plenty of guest appearances, but the now-official lineup for Continental's last three days (of shows) just seems pretty boring. Jesse Malin and Murphy's Law play NYC all the time. Banana Fish Zero broke up in 2005....

Avalon closing? selling? just not having anymore shows? | Vitalic moved to Hiro
THE LIARS @ WARSAW - 2 DAYS BEFORE AVALON | JUNE 24, 2006 (CRED)

According to Ticketmaster, the only scheduled concert remaining at Clear Channel's new "top rock club" is the Living End show tomorrow night (July 8, 2006). The "Avalon shows" MySpace page says the same thing. The October Vitalic show is now at Hiro Ballroom, and Miss Kittin had a September 16th date at Avalon, but her tour was cancelled.
Rumors have started that the club is for sale and/or closing. Avalon's website just says "new website coming soon."
Clear Channel started doing shows at Avalon at the beginning of 2006. In that short amount of time: CSS/Diplo was cancelled for ticket sales, Teddy Thompson & Glenn Kotche were raided, and the club was shut down causing the cancellation of an Orb show (and maybe others).
The above picture is from the The Liars show @ Warsaw in Brooklyn on June 24th because I couldn't really find a picture of the show they played at Avalon on June 26th.
