Devotchka | 2 nights @ Spiegeltent, Little Miss Sunshine soundtrack & 2006 tour dates

DOWNLOAD: Devotchka - Venus in Furs (V.U. cover) (MP3)

Devotchka That CD there pictured to the right is the EP Devotchka put out in May. Curse Your Little Heart is six songs, three of which are covers of Siouxsie And The Banshees, the Velvet Underground and Frank Sinatra. One-third of the album is available for download at Harmonium.

Have you seen Little Miss Sunshine yet? I had no idea when I previously mentioned it that so many people hated the movie. More importantly I forgot to mention that Devotchka pretty much performed the whole soundtrack....

Don't be fooled by the "various artists" credited as performing on this soundtrack: the CD actually has a rather uniform tone, and mercifully it's a lovely one. Composer Mychael Danna is paired with the Denver band DeVotchKa, who perform his score and offer a few tunes of their own. Making excellent use of strings, tuba, and squeezebox, they set a mood that echoes the movie's warmly idiosyncratic one.

Remember the Spiegeltent? The new temporary venue's been open for weeks and I still haven't had the chance to check it out. Hopefully that will change by September 8th or 9th when Devotchka perform there two nights in a row. All tour dates below...

Reagan Youth playing CBGB with Agent Orange | tix

REAGAN YOUTH @ CBGB IN 1983 (MORE)
Reagan Youth @ CBGB

In yet another strange punk/hardcore reunion move, Reagan Youth are getting back together to play a show with Agent Orange at CBGB on September 23rd. I say it's weird because, sadly, their heroin-addicted singer Dave Rubinstein commited suicide in 1993 after his prostitute girlfriend was killed by a serial killer and his mother was killed in a car accident (true story). Tickets are on sale.

Jackson's Weekly MP3 Roundup

Jackson and I decided it would be best to do this post weekly instead, so here's this week's post...

----

New Sparklehorse tracks have leaked. The anticipated album Dreamt for Light Years in the Belly of the Mountain will be released on September 26 (Astralwerks). [Marathon Packs]

There is another remix of the Yeah Yeah Yeah's "Cheated Hearts". This one is done by Steven Bloodbath. The remix is strange, it's almost...shall we say, industrial?? Not really, but the remix takes the song in a different direction. [FiftyOne:FiftyOne]

Diplo has already done a remix of Teddybear's "Cobrastyle". Someone's quick. [Big Stereo]

Stereogum recently reported about a remix of The Rapture's "Get Myself Into It". Well, there's another one. [The Rich Girls Are Weeping] (At bottom of page)

Since this is basically turning into a remix post, I might as well top it off with a Tapes 'n Tapes remix. You heard me right the remix is done by the one and only Black Eyes. Crazy!!!! [Myself Myself]

Enjoy

----

I'll add one link too. Stereogum has a new Hold Steady track.

free NY Dolls tonight | free Archie Bell Sunday

Archie BellArchie Bell

J
just interviewed Sylvain Sylvain of the New York Dolls for an upcoming BrooklynVegan feature. We don't have time to transcribe the whole interview before tonight's free Dolls show at the Seaport, but here's an excerpt that ends up being a preview of Sunday's free McCarren Pool show as well....

Sylvain Sylvain j: You know who's playing a free show Sunday?

Syl: Who?

j: Archie Bell

Syl: Aw, you're kidding me! Where?!

j: McCarren Park Pool

Syl: What-what pool?

j: McCarren Park Pool up in Greenpoint, Brooklyn

Syl: Greenpoint... McCarren Park... Archie Bell & the Drells?

j: Well, he's being backed by a group called 'The Dansettes,'
but it's Archie Bell of the Drells..

Syl: My God...

j: The Mighty Hannibal's there, also...

Syl: Wow, thanks for the tip, man. I'm going to tell David, he's going to flip. You know why, because I've been telling David we should do "Showdown." 'Cause we used to do an Archie Bell song, "(There's Going to Be a) Showdown." And every now and then somebody comes up to me and says, "Man, do 'Showdown!'" and I say, "Tell David that." Anyway, thanks for the tip, and I hope I'll see you [at the Seaport] tonight.

GIRL TALK'S GREGG GILLIS RECENTLY WROTE
"So, Pitchforkmedia.com put me as a Best New Music artist on Monday and Night Ripper immediately exploded. The past few days have been pretty ridiculous. Im now a hyped band, get ready to hate me in approximately 1 year."

Secret Gnarls Barkley & Ratatat shows Thursday night

GNARLS BARKLEY'S NOT-SECRET SUMMERSTAGE SHOW | AUG 17, 2006 (CRED)
Gnarls Barkley @ Summerstage

It's almost 1:30 am Thursday night (Friday morning). I just got home from a conservative night of seeing indie rock bands Takka Takka and Slowlands at Union Hall, and from what I hear, a secret/private Gnarls Barkley performance (post-Summerstage) is about to start at Plumm (home of the private GNR show) and Ratatat just got done playing (not DJing) at Hiro Ballroom. They played about eight songs - two guys with guitars playing over backing tracks.

UPDATE: Someone just (1:40) called from Plumm and said there was no show happening, but that the DJ was playing Gnarls Barkley....

Little Miss Sunshine, Radiohead Lullabies & Stuff

THIS WAS ONE OF MY FAVORITE SCENES IN LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE
Little Miss Sunshine

You really need to see the movie Little Miss Sunshine. Saw it last night and loved it. It even has Sufjan in the soundtrack - twice. Other music blogs agree. I don't want to see Snakes on a Plane.

Lullabye renditions of Radiohead, Nirvana, Bjork, Pixies, QOTSA, Pink Floyd, Coldplay & more. (via Boing Boing)

New Decemberists album = The Crane's Wife - out 10/3 on Capitol Records. After listening to it a few times - my initial reaction is that it's definitely a Decemberists (who I love) album. There's at least one song I really like that I recognize from their live shows, and I love the duet with Laura Veirs. Other than that all I can say for now is that I need to listen more to see where I think it ranks next to the older albums. Stereogum on the other hand declared it "a masterpiece".

Another album I've been listening to is the new Ratatat, which, when I first wrote up my thoughts about it Sunday night, I said it was "instantly enjoyable & accessible". When I finally posted it on Tuesday I threw "danceable" in there last-minute. I take it back. It's more laid back tripping-swimming-under-water-though-occasionally-head-banging-Vangelis-Blade Runner-trippy-background-music-like than danceable - well, certain parts can get you moving.

Fur: Not Cool
Kelly Clarkson / MetalSkool: boring.
New Silversun Pickups video: better.

Reminder: Antibalas in Marcus Garvey Park tonight

If you're not going to Wu-Tang, Gnarls Barkley / Peeping Tom, Takka Takka / Slowlands, or one of the many other things going on in NYC tonight (8/17), you might want to check out the free Antibalas show in Marcus Garvey Park. (thx Bumpershine for the reminder)

Yesterday was Sharon Jones, and unlike myself, Tripwire's Jeffrey Thrope made if up there.

Joanna Newsom's 2nd album details

Since any Joanna Newsom news is good news, here's the new album press release:

---

JOANNA NEWSOM Ys SET FOR NOVEMBER RELEASE
Stunning New Album Will Steal Your Heart

Drag City is set to release the new album from Joanna Newsom, Ys (pronounced ‘eees’), available nationwide on November 14, 2006. It’s been two-and-a-half years since Joanna’s Drag City debut, The Milk-Eyed Mender, captured the hearts of fans and critics with its lilting harp and vocal majesty. On Ys, Joanna has recorded five (yup, 5!) songs clocking in at fifty-five minutes. The album was recorded with Steve Albini, mixed with Jim O’Rourke, and features orchestral arrangements from the legendary Van Dyke Parks.

On Ys, you will hear a dream collaboration between Joanna’s voice, her harp, and a full orchestra. The album is a ride that ebbs and flows in a scrumptious cacophony of layers and drama. The wide-screened beauty of Ys is due to, among other things, the all-analog production mixed to tape and mastered at Abby Road.

For the uninitiated, The Milk-Eyed Mender was voted in the top 20 albums of the year in the 2004 Village Voice “Pazz and Jop” poll. Critics far and wide praised her unusual and superior talents. Live, Joanna brings passion and drama to the stage, performing with epic spirit.

Tracklisting:

1. Emily
2. Monkey & Bear
3. Sawdust & Diamonds
4. Only Skin
5. Cosmia

---

It was also just announced that Joanna is playing Pop Montreal, and as you know she's playing Brooklyn very, very soon too.

Pop Montreal Announces Initial 2006 Lineup

CMJ is not the only festival that announced the initial lineup of bands this week. Pop Montreal happens October 4-8, 2006 in (duh) Montreal, and they've got Joanna Newsom, Vashti Bunyan, Land of Talk, Sunset Rubdown, and more...

------

Dear pop music lovers,

What a wild roller coaster of a ride we’re all getting ready for! This year’s festival is going to be exceptionally magnificent. We are re-invigorating indie music beyond clichés and car commercial soundtracks. We are showing the world what a festival can be; what a group of young people can do with imagination, hard work and vision.

This year we are pleased to work with the Future of Music Coalition (FMC) and McGill University to present the FMC’s 6th annual Policy Summit. We will also have our Film POP festival, our Puces POP arts and crafts fair, and an assortment of art shows and special events entitled Art POP. Our fifth edition will introduce the world to future stars, forgotten heroes and an assortment of freaks, who will come together for what people are starting to call “the greatest event on earth.” We will all share moments of sublime beauty, knee-slapping good times and, of course, some crazy misadventures we’ll only remember in our dreams.

POP Montreal is very pleased to announce our initial confirmation list. This group of artists represents a wide range of styles and genres and each and every one of them has a personal connection to Montreal, and the amazing group of people that help make this festival possible. Some of the highlights include: Ramblin’ Jack Elliot, the 75 year old American troubador and living link between Woody Guthrie and Bob Dylan; Joanna Newsom the Drag City psych-folk harp diva who will make her Canadian debut; Gary Wilson a mythical purveyor of new wave rock and adolescent angst pop; Edu K, the Brazilian pioneer of Baile Funk and booty shaking good times; Spank Rock, the first utopian, multi-ethnic, underground, conscious booty-bass hip hop act; Vashti Bunyan, the Scottish songstress, who’s ethereal voice has been a major influence on such artists as Devendra Banhart and The Animal Collective; Keith Fullerton Whiteman a composer/performer obsessed with electronic music, from its mid-century origins in Europe through its contemporary worldwide incarnation as "digital music"; Tapes n’ Tapes, who’s bewildering indie rock might be the best thing to come out of Minneapolis since Husker Du; the left field psychosurgical aural distortion of Kool Keith’s Dr. Octagon; and The Mighty Sparrow himself, who’s title, “The King of Calypso,” pretty much sums it all up. We also have a whole lot more, including a very special organ performance by Gonzales at St. Jean Baptise Catholic Church. This will be the opening show of the festival and will also feature the Montreal premiere of Captain Beefheart and Gods & Monsters’ guitarist Gary Lucas’ live soundtrack to the silent 1920 German Expressionist classic film The Golem.

So that’s just a taste. Take a look at our line-up, read about our different events and get your freakin’ tickets early ‘cause this is going to be some next level, off the chain nonsense.

Passes on sale Monday August 20th on Admission and participating local outlets!

Wes' Weekly Hip Hop News Roundup | (Aug 16, 2006)

Wes is back with the second edition of the Hip Hop News Roundup...

CLIPSE
Clipse

DifferentKitchen points to these streams from from DJ Shadow's new album The Outsider: "Enuff" ft Q-Tip & Lateef and "You Made It" ft Chris James

Soldier's Ride (video at YouTube) features a faux Neptunes beat and has no-name Big J sandwiched between the two members of the best group in current Hip Hop: Clipse. Big J is out of his league, as Clipse...well...eclipses him on his own track in this indie-feeling video. (Also: watch Clipse freestyle with Mr. Quotable and fellow Virginia native Skillz live on Power 92.) (Via PoloFleece/JesusPiece)

Andre 3000 of Outkast speaks on which albums/artists appear on the soundtrack to his live. Eric B & Rakim, Kraftwerk, Funkadelic and more are included, and he namechecks Squarepusher.

Saigon, the Just Blaze-backed hope for conscious, yet street based hip hop, is risking becoming the 'rapper that cried wolf' if he doesn't drop the much delayed and long awaited The Greatest Story Never Told. Stream first single "Pain In My Life". (via NahRight)

Living legends EPMD will perform at BB Kings Blues Club in Times Square October 14th for their first NYC performance 8 years. (via AllHipHop)

Lil' Kim is fresh out of jail and attempting to 'free herself' from her Atlantic Records contract. Either that or she is being dropped depending on who you're asking. Lil' Kim album "Naked Truth" is the least deserving recipient of The Source's '5 Mics', hip hop's formerly golden standard for 'classic, must own' albums. (truth) (via IOL)

Fresh off his second wave of ventures in to pop music with Nelly Furtado and the upcoming Justin Timberlake album, Timbaland is producing a biopic on the life of Columbian drug kingpin Pablo Escobar. He claims it'll be bigger than the similarly themed classic "Scarface". (via ContactMusic)

Jay-Z meets up with Kofi Annan, no that is not a rapper, and collaborates with MTV and the UN, yes that UN, in an attempt to solve the world water crisis. Read about it here.

Jay Z

Now check out Wes' Roots review, and his post from last week.....and since he mentioned Justin Timberlake, I might as well point out that Justin is playing "small" venues, and oh yeah - Lil' Wayne was arrested in Atlanta.

I'm not concerned with record sales, because I think that if anyone's looking for it online to download it and listen to it, when it comes out [on September 12], they'll buy it anyways. They're fans. Mastodon is touring.

Corinne Bailey Rae is everywhere | Free NYC Show

SHE IS EVERYWHERE - YOU PROBABLY HATE HER
Corinne Bailey Rae and friends

Along with Lily Allen, Sound Team, The Decemberists, Interpol, The Magic Numbers, Kevin Devine, and LCD Soundsystem - British soul singer Corinne Bailey Rae is one of Capitol Records' newer signings. All I knew was that she was "huge" in the UK, so I made sure to show up early to catch her set at the Mercury Lounge in March (she played between the Grates and the Guillemots). Then she played right before Morrissey and Richard Hawley at SXSW, and since then I've seen her CD advertised on TV (especially VH1), on billboards, in Starbucks, and everywhere. She played a sold out show at Bowery Ballroom in June, and is playing a still-not-sold-out-moved-from-Bowery-Ballroom show at Webster Hall on August 23rd.

FREE NYC SHOW
One day after the Webster Hall show (and one day before her Boston show) - August 24, 2006 (5pm): Corinne is playing the free J&R Musicfest show at City Hall Park (where I saw Lisa Marie and Marky Ramone) in Lower Manhattan with Freddie Jackson and Joe. (thx CJ)

Watch her in concert at AOL.

The Roots & Talib Kweli @ Webster Hall, NYC | pics & review

The Roots @ Webster HallThe Roots @ Webster Hall

Writer: Wes
Photographer: Eric M. Townsend

The Roots @ Webster Hall The most surprising fact of The Roots' show at Webster Hall last night (August 14, 2006) wasn't that Cee-Lo Green of Gnarls Barkley/Goodie Mob fame came out to sing Crazy with them, but that the sound at the club was roughly 4.3 times better than it was for the Roots at Radio City Music Hall. (the sound during Talib Kweli's set was still traditionally awful though).

The Roots are known as the best (and really only) band in Hip Hop. Close to the release of their upcoming Game Theory album - their first on Def Jam Left and best in years - they once more showed us why they can claim that title. Aside from a little variety, the show nearly mirrored the Radio City show. They brought all that they are known for. Black Thought's impeccable breath control and clarity - *coughTalibwatchandlearncough* - combined with a majestic flow makes up for his somewhat anonymous stage presence. Drummer ?uestlove commands the stage and directs the band through a slew of the group's hits - some fantastic new ones, and snippets of non-Roots classics. My favorite part of the show was when they paid homage by segwaying through a slew of songs by Ol' Dirty Bastard, the Notorious B.I.G., Salt 'N Peppa, Grandmaster Flash, Wu Tang Clan and many more... Still the best show in Hip Hop after all those years. The Roots @ Webster Hall

Talib Kweli is blessed with a catalogue of amazing songs, yet cursed with the inability to do them justice live. He's improved from the last time I saw him at Radio City (also with the Roots), but the non-traditional rhyme schemes, and high number of words crammed into each sentence, still take their toll on stage. Many words are dropped while others are just rapped under his breath. Where Black Thought manages to make a similarly complex and crammed flow completely understandable live, Talib Kweli mostly fails. As always, his amazing song Get By, produced by Kanye West and based around a Nina Simone sample, got the biggest audience reaction of the night - bigger even than Cee-lo's appearance. I'm looking forward to Kweli's upcoming new release (Ear Drum) and watching him progress as a performer. He is one of Hip Hop's brightest hopes.
