The Pipettes | Blogwash? - Chris Ott vs Pitchfork

DOWNLOAD: The Pipettes - Dirty Mind (MP3)

The Pipettes"I've been writing about pop music for over a decade. The bulk of my work can be found on Pitchfork, where I hung my hat between 2000 and 2004." [Chris Ott]

"In the end, We Are the Pipettes is a modern indie pop album, and a classic one at that." [Pitchfork - Best New Music]

"Like those who fawn over them, the Pipettes have talked their way into this party, and I suspect we will not notice when they have left." [Chris Ott says "Blogwash" - the Village Voice]

Lou Reed's Berlin coming to St Ann's Warehouse (Brooklyn)

Lou Reed Berlin"Recorded in 1973, Lou Reed’s Berlin was the unexpected, critically panned, follow-up 'concept album' to his popular hit record, Transformer. Although it became a cult favorite and was reissued, Berlin was never performed live. Until now! Arts at St. Ann’s, the Sydney Festival, and UCLA Live! have joined forces to present a theatrically realized concert version of Reed’s stylized rock paean to life outside the circle, the orchestrations filled with the lyrics of the broken hearted and willfully disabled...the drifting tormented addicts of love formalizing their own downfalls in the outskirts of the divided city. From Beerhalle staccato to the embers of a final Sad Song...this is an evening to press between the crumbling leaves of Fall."

The show runs from from Dec. 14-17, 2006. Tickets are $65.

Sick stuff

"Troubled rockers PETE DOHERTY, JUSTIN HAWKINS and KEANE frontman TOM CHAPLIN have set up songwriting sessions together in exclusive London clinic The Priory to cope with their rehabilitation therapy. The trio, who are all battling drug and alcohol addictions, met in group sessions and have quickly struck up a friendship." [Contact Music]

The Shins played McCarren Park Pool in Brooklyn

THE SHINS @ MCCARREN PARK POOL | AUG 23, 2006 (BY BAO)
The Shins @ McCarren Pool

While Sufjan and David Byrne were getting down at the Beacon Theatre Wednesday night, The Shins were headlining McCarren Park Pool in Brooklyn.

"I never thought I would say (or write) this... But we went to see The Shins last nite at the Mcarren Pool in Greenpoint and they sucked." [La Elbahara]

"What did not impress me was seeing The Shins." [Productshop]

"It didn’t help that the sound, courtesy of both the system and the band’s own miscues, was on the muddy side most of the set." [CMJ]

Comedians of Comedy tour: Warsaw cancelled, David Cross & Fred Armisen added, more dates, etc...

The William Shatner roast on Comedy Central wasn't as good as the Pamela Anderson one, but anyway here's a clip starring Comedians of Comedy's Patton Oswalt and Brian Posehn along with Andy Dick and Carrie Fisher (Princess Leah)....

Updates to the Comedians of Comedy tour below...

COMEDIANS OF COMEDY Brooklyn show - CANCELLED!

Hey everybody. Well, I'm afraid we've got some bad news for all of you in Brooklyn, our Warsaw show has been cancelled. I know, I know, we're sad too, but that's what's happened.

Anybody that's purchased tickets for this show, your tickets will be honored for the Irving Plaza show the next nite.

We're sorry to announce such news, but that's sometimes the price of high quality laughter.

Obviously, any street teamers that were sent posters, please don't post put any up as it'd just cause confusion for the Irving Plaza gig.

We're really excited to see everybody on this upcoming tour! Buy tickets early and please, get us some more scotch!

-Love, COC

----

Why Brooklyn was cancelled from Patton:

Sadly, we're working with a new booking agency, and they're used to rock bands and such. Thus, they panicked when they saw that Eugene does a lot of regular shows in New York, and that I'd be doing a show in November at Caroline's. They somehow think this will curb ticket sales. It was going to be too much hassle to convince them otherwise, so we figured we'd cancel the Warsaw to quell their fears, and fold everything into the Irving Plaza show. Rest assured, we're going to make the Irving Plaza show VERY special, so that when we come back, we'll get to do both shows. We were very much looking forward to the Warsaw, and we're sorry about any last-minute hassles. This does mean we'll have Thursday the 14th off in NY, which means we'll secretly be dropping into someone's shows somewhere.

----

Dawid Cross, Jon Benjamin and & Fred Armisen added....

Man, are you guys in for a treat!

Philadelphia! We just confirmed Fred Armisen (from SNL) to perform seeing as how Mr. Mirman will be unable to attend.

And New York!? You get a double treat! David Cross and Jon Benjamin will be making special appearances!

Get tickets now because we're sure these shows will sell out!
-love, COC

Takka Takka @ Union Hall, Brooklyn, NY | pics

DOWNLOAD: I take my drinks like Jackson (MP3)

Takka Takka @ Union Hall

Union Hall is a great new venue - good sound and space, plus Takka Takka rocked (Aug 17, 2006) - they actually rocked more than I expected given the mellower nature a lot of their music. They gave me more of a Hold Steady bar-band feel than the indie rockness of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah (who they're touring with). Don't miss them. And oh yeah, they all smiled a lot. I love that.

Takka Takka @ Union Hall

"And last night’s set, a truly skilled performance that offered a near-perfect balance of musicianship and showmanship, proved they may just deserve every bit of star-rising that comes their way." [stereoactivenyc]

Takka Takka play with Annuals @ Sin-e in NYC on September 14th. Then they go on tour.

Wes' Weekly Hip Hop News Roundup | (Aug 24, 2006)

Undisputed Wes knows as much about hip hop as he does about the careers of up-and-coming indie singer-songwriters, maybe more...

The GameLegendary rapper Pharaoh Monch is set to release his first album since his 1999 Rawkus Records debut Internal Affairs this winter. He titled it Desire.

The Game released what is arguably the best hip hop release of 2005 under tutelage of Dr. Dre, and with the support of most of the current heavyweight producers. After a much publicized falling out with collaborator 50 Cent and switching labels from Aftermath to Geffen I was getting a little worried about the quality of his upcoming release The Doctor's Advocate, but based on the video for the first single "It's Okay (One Blood)", I have regained confidence. The MP3 leaked a few months ago at NahRight. Watch the video on YouYube. Excellent.

According to the The New York Times, Irv Gotti is close to finishing up a new deal with Universal Music to become the chief of a label within the Universal/Motown label. It will presumably be called The Inc, just like his last label under Universal, until they cut him off. Ja Rule and Ashanti are the only confirmed signings. I wonder if they still have anything relevant to put out. (via BallerStatus).

As BV already posted, Busta Rhymes, rapper of diminishing relevance and sales, was arrested for kicking a kid in the head after he spit on his car.

J DillaAfter dropping two amazing street singles/leaks, War With God and Tell It Like It Is, Ludacris predictably goes for Money Maker featuring Pharrel as the actual first single for his upcoming Release Therapy. Watch the video on YouTube. (via StillListenToGangstaMusic)

The late great J-Dilla/Jay Dee's new album, the Shining comes out this week and it's quite amazing, as expected. His last album?

MTV says that Outkast and A Tribe Called Quest are set to collaborate. "I was talking to Q-Tip the other day, and he said, 'Come to the studio,' " Andre said. "I was going to ask him if it would be all right to do me and Big Boi and Tip and Phife [Dawg] on one record." Read the full story here.

David Byrne duets with Sufjan Stevens @ The Revenge of the Book Eaters @ Beacon Theatre, NYC | pics, MP3

SUFJAN STEVENS & DAVID BYRNE @ THE BEACON THEATRE | AUG 23, 2006 (CRED - MORE)
David Byrne & Sufjan Stevens

The Revenge of the Book Eaters show at Beacon Theatre in NYC last night was great. I don't have everyone's name who was involved, but basically there was a host and a guitar-playing co-host, and a comedic reading/sketch by Jon Stewart, and three songs and witty banter by The Long Winters' John Roderick, and a short 826NYC documentary and information session with Dave Eggers, and about five songs by Sufjan Stevens & band, and a reading by Sarah Vowell, and hugs by Dave Eggers to whoever donated at least twenty more dollars at the show, and about five country songs by David Byrne & band (2 covers, 2 obscurish Talking Heads songs, and a new song that's coming out on his drummer's band's CD), AND THEN there was a very special encore.

If I had to choose which indie rock icon David Byrne would join on stage next, it wouldn't be Sufjan Stevens. His multiple appearances with The Arcade Fire were a lot more exciting, but nonetheless this one was special. Probably spawned from circumstance (they were both on the bill), they together covered a song about Michigan, that as Byrne pointed out, "wasn't written by Sufjan" - it was "Saginaw Michigan" by Lefty Frizzell. The host promised us the duet earlier in the night if we (the audience) put at least $5000 in Dave Eggers' bucket. They collected over $15,000.

Jessica Suarez has a 4:47 slightly crackly MP3. Stereogum has a shorter, cleaner MP3 and video.

Gomez playing three nights bitches

Dr. Octagon, Sunset Rubdown, The Mountain Goats, Xiu Xiu, Okkervil River, Mojave 3, Voxtrot, and Beirut (two upcoming nights each) have been topped...by Gomez*....

3 NIGHTS COMING UP

Gomez will be performing three nights at New York City's venerable Bowery Ballroom -- October 5, 6 and 7. As we head towards the end of 2006, Gomez will be coming on ten years of performing together and so the time is nigh for a couple of throwdown gigs. These will be unique shows -- a deep immersion into the Gomez repertoire, additional musicians perhaps, and plenty of mayhem. In a couple weeks we'll be announcing a special West Coast event as well, so stay tuned.

All tour dates at their site.

* Gomez's last NYC show was at the much larger Webster Hall.

CBGB stiffed Gothamist?

"As a side note, CBGB's - which we are very sad to see go, is apparently going with a lot of money made from these shows. As an example, we had a good tunrout on Monday yet they left us with a total of $25 to pay the three bands with. That's $2.27 per band member. That's so punk rock." [Gothamist]

Tommy Ramone plays bluegrass, Continental adds their real last show PLUS Lenny Kaye @ CBGB

UNCLE MONK
Unkle Monk

The last surviving founding member of the Ramones Tommy Ramone plays bluegrass with Claudia Tienan of the Simplistics. They call themselves Uncle Monk.

The Continental changed their mind about Murphy's Law playing the last show ever at the club. Tickets are now on sale for THE REAL LAST SHOW ("this is it!") on September 17. 2006. Its "a full Ramones set" by Ramones producer Daniel Rey, Ramones bassist (1989-1996) CJ Ramone, Radio host and lead singer of the The Dictators Handsome Dick Manitoba (also own's Manitoba's bar), Walter Lure (Johnny Thunders and the Heartbreakers), and Lenny Kaye (Patti Smith group). No Tommy Ramone at this one, but then again it does say "special guests". (thx Klaus)

The lineup for the night of September 17th at CBGB has yet to be announced, but speaking of Lenny Kaye - he'll be the special guest at CBGB's Gallery on September 8th. He goes on at 10pm after Carla Rhodes. Mad Juana are on at midnight.

Bob Dylan says modern music is worthless

Dylan on Rolling Stone"I don't know anybody who's made a record that sounds decent in the past twenty years, really," the 65-year-old rocker said in an interview with Rolling Stone magazine.

Dylan, who released eight studio albums in that time, returns with his first recording in five years, "Modern Times," next Tuesday.

Noting the music industry's complaints that illegal downloading means people are getting their music for free, he said, "Well, why not? It ain't worth nothing anyway." [REUTERS]

--

Does he mean it, or this just a carefully calculated controversy timed with the release of the self-regarding old money-machine's new album?

Hasn't he heard the new Kevin Federline yet?

An Interview with Shara Worden of My Brightest Diamond

Undisputed Wes interviewed and photographed Shara Worden of My Brightest Diamond this past weekend. Her new album Bring Me The Workhorse is out today (August 22, 2006) on Sufjan Steven's record label Asthmatic Kitty (it got an 8.1 @ Pitchfork ).

Shara's vocals can also be heard all over Sufjan's Illinois album, and she's an integral part of his touring band. Her CD release party will be held at the Spiegeltent in NYC this Thursday August 24th at 10pm, and she kicks of a U.S. tour with Sufjan on September 11th.

My Brightest Diamond - Shara Worden

Wes: One of the first times I saw you perform was at Cross-Pollination with Dave Deporis almost a year and a half ago. Now you are releasing your first record as My Brightest Diamond called Bring Me The Workhorse. From that show to this record your sound has become somewhat less ethereal and your song structure seems more focused. What caused that evolution?

Shara: That's interesting that you say that. Someone just wrote to me about how they felt that when the song "Dragonfly" (watch video here) first started it was more ethereal and ambient. I think a lot of that has to do with the choices I made for Bring Me The Workhorse arrangement wise. I was trying to a. make a cohesive work and b. not be too noodly. Something that was not precious. I think that I am writing songs that still have that eccentric and ethereal quality to them, but there is a different format for those songs.

The next record, A Thousand Shark's Teeth, will be a string album and more ethereal, less rock. That's a distinction I had to make because I basically had two records. I was trying to make them work together, but they just didn't like each other. So I thought: This is me trying to cram in too many ideas for one album. Let me just make something cohesive and separate these two records.

Wes: Was it a natural move for the record to be released on Asthmatic Kitty after working with Sufjan?

Shara: Yes. Sufjan has been telling me for a couple of years that he wanted to support me in any way that he could. I was hesitant at first because I didn't know them and how they were as a label.

Wes: Does this predate you playing and recording with Sufjan?

Shara: Yes it does. But then I was able to tour with him and meet the people at the label, see over the course of time how they do things and what their intentions were with me and I felt really comfortable with them.

Wes: Do any of your fellow Illinoise Makers appear on the album?

My Brightest Diamond - Shara WordenShara: No, in fact the string players I played with before ended up working on Sufjan's Illinois and now they'll go on tour with the both of us. So it's all a blend now without ownership or anything like that.

Wes: You mentioned A Thousand Shark's Teeth, your next album. Do you have any recording or release plans for that one already?

Shara: The string parts for that record were recorded two weeks before I recorded the current album. I just finished the lead vocals of five of the tunes last week and there will be more recording in the winter. The release will not happen until late summer of 2007. Before that we're doing a remix record of the current album this winter.

Wes: Who will be doing the remixes?

Shara: Several people. Alias, his remix is awesome. Lusine, Siamese Sister and Sufjan's drummer, James McAllister, did a remix. If Sufjan has time he may do one too.

Wes: In a similar vein perhaps I just listened to "Razorblade Salvation", a new Jedi Mind Tricks song that samples a piano part of Sufjan's "Dumb I Sound" and it features your lyrics and vocals. How did that come about?

Shara: They approached the label about using the Sufjan sample and the producer had heard some of my stuff and asked if I'd be willing to lay down some vocals. A couple of weeks ago I went into the studio for 3 hours, wrote lyrics and recorded three songs. It was interesting because I had complete freedom. There was no producer, no artist, just me and the engineer. I had the song title, the music but none of the raps. It was so fun. I had a blast.

Wes: Was that a musical avenue you'd ever expect exploring?

Shara: Well, I grew up near Detroit and I was listening to all kinds of soul and motown, early 90's rap. So that's my history not really out of context for me.

Wes: So who were your favorite rappers?

Shara: Ice Cube, Heavy D, even Too Short. I listened to all of that stuff.

Wes: Your earliest musical influences (grandfather, dad and mom) and your first performances were all church music related. Does that still resonate in your music now?

Shara: I don't know if you can still hear the gospel music. I think I would attribute more to Soul music than I would to Gospel music. In a lot of ways culturally those two are intertwined. I use language of heaven and hell to represent ideologies. Something of an End (MP3) for example says heaven and hell come crashing. It's like you have these ideas of how you exist in the universe, what it means to be alive or dead, or what gravity is, almost what the laws of physics are. And so heaven and hell is more representative of the constructs of how you think the world operates. Then something happens in your life and everything that you thought about the way the world was turns out to be not that way.

Wes: Are there any particular artists that inspire you or that you have been listening to recently?

Shara: I just heard about Stars Like Fleas and they're playing this Tuesday at Tonic and they sound really cool. They have like saw, harp, laptop, a 15 piece choir. Cool, crazy stuff. I recently bought all of Scott Walker's records. He just came out with a new record called The Drift. I love Dave Deporis and Diane Cluck. And Dayna Kurtz, she's amazing and just came out with a new record.

Wes: Aside from the new album, the tour and then next year's album, what other musical plans are in your future?

Shara: I was thinking about that yesterday and I think I tend to work in opposites. I see this pattern for myself where I'll do a rock album and then I do something that is quiet. I'm also interested in exploring dance music and I'm in this really avant-garde stuff like Scott Walker. Definitely what I can say is that I want my song structures to loosen up. Right now they are not fluid as I would like them to be. We'll see, it's a year and a half down the road. I have a feeling it will be the opposite of the record after this one, but it's hard to say what I'll be interested in.

PRESS RELEASE
Much to the excitement of fans of sensitive singer-songwriters, Kill Rock Stars artist Jeff Hanson will hit the road in September for a string of dates with Fall Records (Page France, In Ink Please) recording artist, Southerly.

Those who adored Hanson's quivering falsetto on his 2005 self-titled sophomore album will be pleased to know that his next record will feature even more haunting tunes that play on the basics that make him great - voice and guitar. The as-yet-untitled record will be released in early 2007, again on Kill Rock Stars.

Jeff Hanson cut his teeth playing in Midwestern emo-rockers M.I.J. in the late 1990s, but opted to trade the Marshalls for Martins upon going solo. Hanson was signed to Kill Rock Stars based on a demo, and his first solo album, 2003's Son, received universal acclaim. Hanson's self-titled second album was similarly embraced:

“Hanson's reedy voice pairs gorgeously with his simple, poignant arrangements and even makes the most morose moments affecting.” – Billboard

“Like a choirboy's solo, Hanson establishes a solid sotto voice through tranquil tones and subtle guitar picking...” – Soma

“It's his rich language and articulate guitar work that ultimately hold a listener's attention.” – Time Out New York

Compiled and Edited by MoveOn Cultural Director Laura Dawn, and featuring the photography of C.B. Smith, It Takes a Nation is a series of photographs of the evacuees and housing donors from the Hurricane Housing program all living together and features extensive interviews edited into first person narratives. Featuring a foreword written by Senator Barack Obama, IT TAKES A NATION tells the extraordinary story of how thousands of Americans came together to provide shelter, sustenance, and hope to survivors of Hurricane Katrina. Through MoveOn.org's Hurricane Housing website, volunteers brought aid to evacuees by providing housing, cars, jobs, clothes, healthcare, and, perhaps most important, community. Presenting a positive contrast to the national shame that was widely felt about the Bush administration's handling of the Katrina crisis, these candid first-person accounts and portraits are a moving testament to the power of everyday people to make miracles happen.

The acclaimed producer used to be an engineer in producer Daniel Lanois' studio, and he has worked with Brian Eno. He recently composed the soundtrack for the Al Gore documentary An Inconvenient Truth." [listen at NPR]

PRESS RELEASE
4AD is pleased to announce the next masterpiece in the Mountain Goats repertoire….Get Lonely will be released by 4AD on August 22nd.

2005’s The Sunset Tree was the most nakedly autobiographical in the Mountain Goats discography, which spans 400 or more songs across scores of releases. It was widely hailed as a masterpiece, and it went on to become the most successful of Darnielle’s career.

If The Sunset Tree derived its power and energy from an unblinking exorcism of personal demons, Get Lonely is perhaps the quiet, haunted aftermath. It’s a reflective, intimate record; the mood is one of bittersweet resignation rather than cathartic release. Get Lonely doesn’t quite follow the stark command of its title. In fact, these recordings are warmly collaborative affairs, with Darnielle and his long-term collaborators Peter Hughes and Franklin Bruno forming an ensemble captured playing live in the studio. Their performances are augmented by the luminous cello playing of Erik Freidlander, the lithe, almost-jazz drumming of Corey Fogel and the multifarious instrumental touches supplied or inspired by producer Scott Solter.

Track Listing:

Wild Sage
New Monster Avenue
Half Dead
Get Lonely
Maybe Sprout Wings

PRESS RELEASE
The hardest working band in indie rock is back. Following a 72 date spring tour Headlights took the summer off to recoup and rehearse. They are gearing up to hit the road in support of their critically acclaimed debut album Kill Them With Kindness, which comes out via Polyvinyl this Tuesday August 22nd.

The band kicks off their 50+ date fall tour this Wednesday in Dekalb, IL and wraps things up in late November at the Empty Bottle in Chicago. The band will be joined by labelmates Decibully for the first 25 shows. The two bands will pair up and head west. Sharing members and due to rising gas prices they will all pile into one van together. From there Headlights will head east, including a stop at this year's CMJ Music Marathon.

After their massive fall tour is over, Headlights will spend the winter recording songs for a split EP with Suicide Squeeze band Metal Hearts. The split EP will be released on Polyvinyl in the spring of 2007. After recording, Headlights will tour Europe, which will be followed by a spring tour with Metal Hearts in support of their split release.

Keane say Bowery Ballroom is an amazing place to play

KEANE: "We went off to New York to play at the Bowery Ballroom, which is another really cool place. That’s an amazing place to play [he says in a surprised tone] and it was a stage that we’ve wanted to play our whole lives really. We finally did a tiny little rock show in there and it was quite fantastic. All in all, we had a lot of fun on that little two-week tour." [Crave Music]

Ailing music biz worried about glut of new albums

"...From September through the end of the year, albums expected to join the platinum parade are due from Clay Aiken, Alan Jackson, Ludacris, Beck, Evanescence, Jet, My Chemical Romance, Keith Urban and the Killers. There will also be plenty of big releases for the older demos from the likes of Bob Dylan, Rod Stewart, Elton John, Sting, the Who, Meat Loaf and Bob Seger......

...Finally, there's always a sleeper album of the holiday selling season. This year, Ngo believes it will be from Yusuf Islam, who stopped recording as Cat Stevens in 1978...." [Yahoo News]

Stream Idlewild, the album by Outkast, not the band

Idlewild

It's difficult to blame OutKast's Andre Benjamin and Antwan "Big Boi" Patton for going Hollywood. Next week, they will appear in "Idlewild," their first movie together. Arriving as almost an afterthought will be the film's soundtrack, which also happens to be OutKast's seventh album. [Chicago Tribune]
