The Knife add 2nd NYC show (CMJ) | Tix on sale, MP3s
THE KNIFE IN NORWAY (CRED)

One of the most anticipated (and adulated) sets of the weekend came from Swedish siblings Olof and Karin of The Knife. A trip to their webpage bills the Silent Shout tour as "An Audio Visual Experience," and that is no lie. The duo remains behind a black-tinted scrim for the show's duration, with futuristic (and abstract) images projected from both sides. Some will scream "Blue Man Group!" and, frankly, they'll be right. But the body-paint-and-neon mixed with the jittery dance moves and inhuman detachment work with the Swedes' "mysterious" aura (and awesome material). I hear the duo only intended on playing five shows as The Knife; Øya marked their eighth already, and their first US show at Webster Hall will be the twelfth. This means that we Americans are very lucky; "Heartbeats" will kill any (and every) crowd it meets, and I'm sure that the upcoming indoor-club dates will be well-loved bouts of art-school worship and reefer madness. [Amrit Stereogum in Norway]
The Knife added a 2nd late show at Webster Hall on November 1st. The previously announced show on that date was pushed back two hours to become the early show. Not everyone is happy about that.
-----
AND: You'll find a track by the Knife along with 36 other songs for download as part of RNR Star's Summer Mix

Mos Def spokeswoman chides N.Y. police
"A spokeswoman for rapper Mos Def said police overreacted when they ticketed him for an impromptu performance outside the MTV Video Music Awards this week. Police officers patrolling the event issued the performer a summons for operating a sound system without a permit Thursday after he arrived at Radio City Music Hall in a pickup truck and hastily set up a portable stage." Sufjan Stevens himself is not included
"Yes it's true. I have Sufjan Steven's first drum kit in my studio and it's not exactly in the best shape--needs new heads but is a full kit and the reeks with the bittersweet nostalgia of the sexiest man alive. Also included will be an original Sufjan Steven's "Moxie" magazine--the magazine he started at Hope College back in the good old days. Sufjan Stevens himself is not included in the price but may be negotiable. I'm just moving out of my studio and need to get rid of stuff." [Craigslist] (thx Foster)
An unsuccessful eBay auction further reveals that the seller is "located at third ave and third place in the old can factory near the Gowanas Canal".

RIP WOXY
Here's the sad letter Internet radio station WOXY posted on their website, in its entirety....

Listeners, fans and friends,
This sucks.
This is the moment all of us hoped would never come. After plugging away at this for the past two years, it’s become pretty clear that operating woxy.com as a stand-alone Internet "radio station" is not going to cut it. Our operating costs are higher than you might think, and the revenue we were able to generate from advertising isn’t close to supporting what we’re doing. Even membership revenue wasn’t enough to get us there. When your business doesn’t make money, you eventually go out of business.
With this in mind, we’ve been looking for either a significant partner – someone with a larger plan into which woxy.com could be plugged – or an outright buyer. That search hasn’t been fruitful. We’re still willing to entertain offers and explore possibilities (email bryan@woxy.com), but our time is short. We thought it was time to share our situation with you ... to give you a heads-up.
You might be saying, "What can I do to help?" Unfortunately, unless you have significant investment capital and a way to profit from the wonderful programming we create, you can’t. As of today, we will no longer be selling or renewing memberships or accepting contributions. Please don’t send us money ... it will just mean we have to send it back to you.
Now is a good time to say THANK YOU to our incredibly patient, generous and kind angel investors. Without them ... well, we wouldn’t have had the chance to even be in the game. They’ve enabled everything we’ve accomplished over the past two years, and for that, they are saints to indie rock lovers everywhere.
We did investigate an alternative: stripping our operations to the absolute bare minimum by cutting back to one staffer, no more DJs, no more Lounge Acts, etc. We decided it wasn’t worth it. It wouldn’t have been true to what woxy.com is, and it wouldn’t have honored the legacy of 97X.
While woxy.com may have failed in a business sense, we’re pretty proud that we managed to put out some of the most passionate, unique and interesting programming on the Internet and elsewhere. We showered love and airplay on countless bands who otherwise would have received none, garnered national press attention and hosted nearly 200 live Lounge Act performances. Not too bad for a little, four-person Internet radio station from Cincinnati.
A radio station is only as big as its listeners make it. We’re not BS-ing when we say that you guys, our supporters, are the most amazing people on the planet. THANK YOU. The dedication and enthusiasm you’ve shown for what we do is staggering and inspiring. Thank you to everyone who stepped up to become a member, generously made a contribution, emailed (spammed) your friends, spread the gospel of woxy.com and – most of all – listened.
Barring something exceptional happening in the next two weeks, we will silence our broadcasts on Friday, September 15th.
Sometimes no matter how hard you try and how special the thing you do, it simply isn’t enough to beat the odds. It’s the cold reality of business that not even we could escape. When September 15th comes, we’ll meet it proudly with heads held high and celebrate the past two years of woxy.com and the spirit of 97X. For those lucky enough to have been part of it, The Future of Rock and Roll will forever be in our minds and hearts.
So enjoy these last two weeks with us. Shall we rock?
Eternally yours,
Bryan Jay, Mike, Shiv and Barb

Weird Al vs. downloaders, PLUS new DVD & Album
Listen to "Don't Download this Song" at the website promoting Weird Al Yankovic's 12th album, Straight Outta Lynwood, set to release on Sept. 26, 2006.
The lyrics imply that downloading music is the gateway to bigger crimes such as robbing liquor stores, selling crack and running over kids with your car. Weird Al's song, of course, hyperbolizes the issue and sides with us (ahem, the downloaders). "Don't Download This Song" says we should go buy CDs so that artists can buy more ridiculous items, like diamond palm trees. [CNET]
Weird Al also just released The Weird Al Show - The Complete Series on DVD.
The three-disc set contains all 13 hilarious episodes of the series which ran on CBS during the 1997-1998 television season. The discs include a plethora of entertaining bonus material, such as animation storyboards, original art galleries, and a karaoke version of the tongue-twisting theme song. Each episode features a commentary by Weird Al, producer Tom Frank and director Peyton Reed, plus guest commentaries from some of the cast members, including Judy Tenuta and Emo Philips.

Robert Christgau fired from the Village Voice
------ Forwarded Message Dear Friends and Colleagues,If this comes completely out of the blue, I apologize.
It is now official--Village Voice Media fired me today, "for
taste," which means (among other things) slightly sweeter
severance. This despite the support of new music editor RobHarvilla, who I like as a person and a writer. We both believed I
had won myself some kind of niche as gray eminence. So I was
surprised Tuesday when I was among the eight Voice employees
(five editorial, three art) who were instructed to bring their
union reps to a meeting with upper management today. But I
certainly wasn't shocked--my approach to music coverage has never
been much like that of the New Times papers,Bless the union, my severance is substantial enough to give me
time to figure out what I'm doing next. In fact, having finished
all my freelance reviews yesterday, I don't have a single
assignment pending. So, since I have no intention of giving up
rock criticism, all reasonable offers entertained; my phone
number is in the book, as they used to say when there were books.
What I don't need is a vacation--the three of us just had a great
two and a half weeks, and Nina matriculated at BMCC yesterday. No need to respond. Forward to whoever you will.
Love,
The letter is via Gawker who also lists everyone fired: "On the editorial side: Darren Reidy, Ed Park, Jorge Morales, Elizabeth Zimmer, and - gasp -- Bob Christgau. On the art side: Minh Uong, LD Beghtol, Tina Zimmer."

Wes' Weekly Hip Hop News Roundup | (Aug 31, 2006)
Undisputed Wes brings us Hip Hop news weekly....
KANYE WEST & PHARREL @ NOKIA THEATRE, NYC | AUG 29, 2006 (CRED)

Kanye West played the Nokia Theatre the other night. Pharrel, Common and John Legend guested. Jada saw the show and says Best show ever....then Kanye declared un-ironically that A-Ha's "Take On Me" is his favorite track of all time and did the world's cutest batmitzvah dance.. More photos on Wallace's Flickr Page.
Rhymesayers' Brother Ali has a new track called Original King (MP3) and you should listen to it. It's not going to be on his 2007 album The Undisputed Truth, there is no video, there is really nothing to talk about aside from the song being good. Production by Ant of Atmosphere.
How about this for most interesting mashup concept in Hip Hop since the Grey Album: Wu Tang Clan vs New Orleans Dixie Land. Read about it and download over at BoingBoing.
Master P created a musical that is billed as 'the first hip-hop, gospel comedy play about Hurricane Katrina'. Umm...yes, ok. The play uses humor to tell this typical American family's story as they battle the trials and tribulations of the aftermath of the deadly storm. Be sure to check out the photos and the whopping 18 page script at UncleWilly.com. More here.
Peedi Peedi, formerly Peedi Crack, protege of Beanie Sigel and former (?) Roc-A-Fella artist is set to join the Roots? Odd? Read here
And another group addition! Cilvaringz, a Dutch rapper, is set to join the Wu Tang Clan according to RZA and MTV. Yay Holland.
Papoose, one of the stronger mixtape artists out of NYC, has signed a 1.5 million deal with Jive Records. Unfortunately Jive haven't ever really successfully promoted a street rapper. Read more at SOHH and MTV . Download his Katrina tribute track Mother Nature here. Papoose hopes to release his upcoming LP, Nacirema Dream, before 2007.
The Game and Rick Ross wrote a song together. No news on whether this will appear on the Game's upcoming album. Download Blow, It's My Turn at StillListen.
Method Man's albums after his first one have been mostly dissappointing. Will his newfound hunger bring him back to the forefront of rap? Stream the full album, 4:21 The Day after, over at AOL Music.
Eminem does what is often celebrated in Hip Hop videos, spilling his beverage on a playboy model, but in this case she wasn't quite having it. Read more about this over at HipHopRuckus.
Fat Joe signs with JD, Janet Jackson's bf, over at Virgin. Up next is the release of his De La Soul Tribute album "Me, Myself & I". (Ok, it's not really a De La Soul Tribute album.) Read about it in Billboard.

PRESS RELEASE
For The Lemonheads eighth album (and first in over ten years) founding member Evan Dando convened two of his early influences — the unholy duo of drummer Bill Stevenson (Descendents, Black Flag) and bassist Karl Alvarez (Descendents) — in a remote Rocky Mountain hideaway.
Dando and Stevenson co-produced the album, and Stevenson wrote or co-wrote three of its eleven songs; long-time Australian collaborator Tom Morgan added another two. There’s also cameos galore: from wunderkind bassist Josh Lattanzi, certifiable rock giant Garth Hudson (who plays keyboards on ‘Black Gown’ and ‘December’), and some real foot-on-monitor guitar work by Dinosaur JR’s J. Mascis.
The first single from The Lemonheads, “Become The Enemy” will be going to radio in mid-September. If you simply can’t wait that long, you can check out one of the album tracks, “No Backbone” on www.myspace.com/thelemonheads

Mark Gardener (Ride) is playing with Doug Yule (Velvet Underground) at Pianos in NYC tonight (August 31, 2006). There's a "special guest" too, who according to Pianos, if "you who were here for Mark's last show you'll know who it may be." It's all being filmed for a DVD. Tickets are on sale.
Another member of Velvet Underground is playing (with Antony) at St. Ann's in Brooklyn in December, the same place I saw another member of VU play in November.

Dinosaur Jr.'s gear stolen in Queens after Brooklyn show
DINOSAUR JR WITH GEAR @ WARSAW, BROOKLYN | AUGUST 29, 2006 (CRED)

It seems like forever since we've heard one of these sad tales. J Mascis wrote...
After a blisterning set last night in Brooklyn, NY the band awoke this morning to find that the their trailer had been broken into and all of the gear has been taken.J's Amma guitar, the mountain man guitar, Lou's Rickenbacker... EVERYTHING IS GONE. They are still taking inventory to see what else is gone but they were pretty much wiped out.
WE NEED YOUR HELP!!! Spread the word to everyone you know, every music store, pawn shop, club... anywhere you can think they may show up.
If you have ANY information let us know -Thank you.
The band is driving to Amherst to see if they can get enough gear together to play the scheduled show @ Toads in New Haven, CT but it may have to be cancelled.
And this list of the gear, and more info, is circulating via email....
"Attached and listed below is a list of gear that was stolen out of the Dinosaur Jr trailer last night (Tuesday 8.29.06) outside of their hotel in Long Island City, NY. We would appreciate spreading the word and passing this list around in hopes of recovering their gear. Please notify and alert your local guitar shops, pawn shops, music and web stores etc. to keep an eye out for this gear. Feel free to send this list to any and all band, tour and production managers, guitar freaks, touring personnel, venues, musicians and or thieves that you think could help us."

"Touch and Go Records is an independent record label based in Chicago, Illinois, USA, which began life in 1979 in East Lansing, Michigan as a magazine put out by Tesco Vee. Vee was bored with the punk sounds of the day, and captivated by the emerging hardcore movement in America. Inspired, he put out records by the Necros, Fix, Meatmen, and Negative Approach. Tesco's interest in the label waned around 1982 and he handed it off to Corey Rusk, the Necros' bass player." [Wikipedia]

DESCRIPTION OF THE SHOW FROM TONIC
Japanese New Music Festival: Zubi Zuba X plus Akaten plus RonRuins plus Ruins Alone plus Zoffy plus Shrinp Wark plus Acid Mothers Temple SWR plus Seikazoku
$15, $15 in advance
Featuring Yoshida Tatsuya (the Ruins), Tsuyama Atsushi & Kawabata Makoto (both Acid Mother's Temple) in different combinations.
Zubi Zuba X: (Yoshida/Tsuyama/Kawabata) Eccentric poly-rhythmic a cappella ensemble. It covers from Gregorian chant to ethnic music, to do-wop to hardcore screaming, heavily using irregular rhythms and polyrhythm. All sorts of ideas and aberrant musicality overturn the image of a cappella. their totally meaningless lyrics and desperate performances throw the audiences into the abyss of the laughter and admiration. it makes the concept of "singing ability"nonsense.
Akaten: (Tsuyama/Yoshida) Formed in 1995 with the motto of "irresponsibleness" and "perfunctoriness." Using daily commodities like scissors, toothbrush, zipper, camera, and plastic bottle as percussions, and shouting their brand names over and over as the "songs," the show is performed under the concept of low cost and maximum sound effect. AKATEN is the experimental convenience store punk band that provides the sound images of cheap and simple daily lives.
RonRuins:
Ruins Alone: (Yoshida) RUINS is pioneer of Drum & Bass duo. Tunes are complicated and mysterious, and songs are sung in the language of their own invention. It's high-tension, wild, heavy, speedy, acute, and powerful tremendous ensemble never sounds like they are only two players. since last bassist left Yoshida still seeking a bassist and currently he has been playing as RUINS ALONE. playing RUINS songs with sampling bass. this time Yoshida will play songs from Koenji Hyakkei and Korekyojinn too.
Zoffy: (Tsuyama/Kawabata) Formed in 1998. Zoffy's music hints both at the members' deep musical knowledge via their improvised performances of troubadour music and European trad, and also at their deep love for rock via their destructivist covers of classic rock songs, that no longer sounds like anything but ZOFFY. The group believes that humor is essential in music, and their unprecedented performances stray far from the beaten track. Is this the Ultima Thule that rock music has long been aiming for?
Shrinp Wark: (Kawabata/Yoshida) A new improvising duo consisting of Yoshida from Ruins and Kawabata from AMT. group inspired by This Heat and band name taken from their song "Shrink Wrap". Cosmic chemical reaction sound that embraces a multidimensional chaos based upon the principles of minimalism, an anarchistic warping of the time axis, and ultra-accelerated revolving of time particles.
Acid Mothers Temple SWR: (Kawabata/Tsuyama/Yoshida) Acid Mothers Temple have rapidly become acclaimed as the greatest, most extreme trip psychedelic group in the world. SWR is the AMT Family's most powerful battle-formation yet. featuring Tsuyama and Kawabata from the original AMT and Yoshida from Ruins. their crushingly acute freakout sound will pulverize the world's legions of wannabe psych groups.
Seikazoku: (Kawabata/Tsuyama/Yoshida) Formed in 1996, the group nonchalantly references classic prog and rock, ethnic music, jazz and contemporary composition. Improvised music for holy trinity heresy that runs the full gamut of ethnic and electric instruments, primitive stupidity, the suspicious stench of medieval alchemy, the raw power of early rock music, all leavened with a pinch of cosmic incoherency.

The Kooks playing NYC & CA | Tour Dates & tix
DOWNLOAD: She Moves in Her Own Way (MP3)

THE KOOKS | 2006 TOUR DATES
10/23 - New York, NY - Bowery Ballroom (JUST ADDED)
10/24 - Los Angeles, CA - Safari Sams
10/25 - Los Angeles, CA - Spaceland (SOLD OUT)
10/26 - San Francisco, CA - 300 Ritch
10/28 - Brooklyn, NY - NorthSix (SOLD OUT)
I can't tell you how many tickets were actually offered to the public, but apparently The Kooks' Brooklyn show sold out in like a eight days. The Kooks are the latest group of British teenagers to cause a stir (almost) the size of Arctic Monkeys. Hated by Pitchfork and loved by NME, they're visiting NYC for the first time this Fall. The Bowery Ballroom show on October 23rd was just added (supposedly in response to Northsix selling out so quickly), and tickets go on sale at noon.
"The band's debut album Inside In/Inside Out was released in their native UK in January of this year, peaked at #2 in the charts, and has since gone double platinum. The album will see a stateside release on Oct 3rd via Astralwerks." [Filter]

Patti Smith playing final CBGB show? In October?
At first I thought maybe the new date CBGB has listed for the Agnostic Front show was a mistake - it went from September 24th to October 1st (one day after the previously announced closing date of September 30th). An article on Pollstar seems to back this up though: "A team of 'experts' will remove the bars, toilets, etc. in late October after a final gig with Patti Smith, Kristal said."
So far the "downstairs lounge" show on September 30th is still listed as "closing night". Who knows.
Patti Smith also played CBGB on May 1, 2005.

The use of FAKE IDs is unlawaful | The latest from clubland

* photo by Tricia Romano for the Voice
"When you go clubbing now on West 27th Street, the first things that strike you are the searchlights. Placed at either end of the block at Tenth and Eleventh avenues, they light up the sky like a movie set, turning night into day. Then there's the huge electronic billboard that reads, 'Use of fake IDs is unlawful.' And then the cops, so many you can't keep count, lining the block, posted on every corner, handing out flyers detailing 'Nightlife Safety Tips.' ('Always inform a family member or friend of your whereabouts.')" [Tricia Romano - The Voice]

More albums streaming | Beach Boys reissue Pet Sounds

Chris Thile's How to Grow a Woman from the Ground and Bob Dylan's Modern Times (PFork gives it an 8.3, 5 stars at Prefix, and 4.5 at AMG) aren't the only albums streaming right now. The Beach Boy's classic Pet Sounds is too.

Other albums streaming at AOL Music include the The Root's Game Theory (Wes likes it), Pete Yorn's Nightcrawler (tickets all sold out), Stereolab, Lullaby Renditions of Coldplay and Radiohead, Ray LaMontagne (player of secret shows), Hatebreed (if you bought it you're going to CBGB), and more.
There's a downloadable Lady Sovereign performance too.

Nickel Creek breaking up, Chris Thile playing shows, album stream PLUS Strokes stuff

After honing his skills at numerous small Living Room shows over the past year, Chris Thile from Nickel Creek has graduated quickly to headliner of NYC's much larger Bowery Ballroom (one of the best venues in the country according to David Bazan). That show is tonight (August 29, 2006), and its not yet sold out. Catch him now, or wait until March 17, 2007 when he plays CARNEGIE HALL (like Devendra).
Speaking of Nickel Creek...
Subject: Message From Nickel CreekDearest Listener,
After seven years of extensive touring in support of three records (seventeen years as a band), we've decided to take a break of indefinite length at the end of 2007 to preserve the environment we've sought so hard to create and to pursue other interests. It has been a pleasure to write, record, and perform for you through the years and we'd like to heartily thank you for your invaluable contribution to our musical lives.
Yours,
Nickel Creek
(Sean, Sara, and Chris)
Chris Thile covers Gillian Welch, The White Stripes and The Strokes on his new album called How to Grow a Woman from the Ground. Its streaming here (thx J).
The Strokes' Albert Hammond Jr. has solo songs streaming at his MySpace too.

PRESS RELEASE
CHRIS THILE, HOW TO GROW A WOMAN FROM THE GROUND
SEPTEMBER 12, 2006
"There are few musicians with as much talent and drive as CHRIS THILE."-ACOUSTIC GUITAR
"THILE has both the chops and the vision to alter the landscape of his genre forever."-USA TODAY
HOW TO GROW A WOMAN FROM THE GROUND is the sound of a brilliant musician stretching out to reach new things-but also returning to the source that originally inspired his amazing talents. In the process, CHRIS THILE gathered together some of the hottest young players out there-Chris Eldridge, Greg Garrison, Noam Pikelny, and Gabe Witcher-for a spirited run through tracks new and old.
For his latest album, HOW TO GROW A WOMAN FROM THE GROUND, THILE decided to record the project live to two-track tape in order capture the energy of bluegrass as it originally evolved. Little separation. Almost no compression. The communal feel of bluegrass that embodies raw energy and subtle harmonies expressing emotion without artifice.
In some ways HOW TO GROW A WOMAN FROM THE GROUND is a point of departure. A reconciliation of origin and experience. A musical exploration refreshed ... and begun anew.
· Chris Thile is a member of the Grammy®-winning acoustic trio Nickel Creek, which has sold 1.5 million records and was named one of Time Magazine's "Music Innovators for the New Millennium."
· Includes songs by The White Stripes ("Dead Leaves And The Dirty Ground"), Gillian Welch ("Wayside/Back In"), Tom Brosseau ("How To Grow a Woman From the Ground"), Jimmie Rodgers ("Brakeman's Blues"), The Strokes ("Heart in a Cage"), and more, including Chris Thile original songs and brilliant instrumentals-hearkening his landmark album NOT ALL WHO WANDER ARE LOST.

David Byrne bringing "Freak Folk" to Carnegie Hall | Complete "Perspectives" series schedule

The David Byrne curated "Perspectives" series at Carnegie Hall will run four nights: February 1- 4, 2007. In addition to the Imelda Marcos musical written in collaboration with Fatboy Slim, and the bill of Alarm Will Sound, Camille, and Haale, David will host a night of "freak folk" featuring Devendra Banhart, Vashti Bunyan, Vetiver, Adem, and even CocoRosie. Antony is curiously missing from the bill, but thats probably because Antony doesn't need David Byrne to do Carnegie Hall, or Lou just wouldn't let David have him. Sunn 0))) didn't make the cut either. Here's the complete schedule....

David Byrne: Songs from The Knee Plays @ Zankel Hall

Welcome to Dreamland @ Isaac Stern Auditorium w/ Adem, Devendra Banhart, Vashti Bunyan, CocoRosie, and Vetiver. Introduced by David Byrne
A new, experimental form of folk rock has emerged in recent years—with roots in ’60s psychedelia, ’90s jam bands, electronica, and a number of world music traditions. For this concert, David Byrne brings some of both the genre’s creators and their predecessors to Carnegie Hall.
Saturday, February 3, 2007 at 8:00 PM
David Byrne: Songs from Here Lies Love @ Isaac Stern Auditorium
David Byrne and his band perform selections from his new multimedia song cycle written in collaboration with DJ Fatboy Slim—Here Lies Love. The songs invoke the life of Imelda Marcos, the former First Lady of the Philippines, and the servant who raised her.
Sunday, February 4, 2007 at 7:30 PM
One Note @ Zankel Hall w/ Alarm Will Sound (Alan Pierson, Artistic Director and Conductor), Camille, Haale, and artists TBA. Introduced by David Byrne
A central tone or note is the thread that weaves together the wide array of composition and performance styles on this program—from classical to Iranian, liturgical to post rock—all having the musical concept of a central axis as a foundation.
----
* Adem played Joe's Pub last night, and is going on tour with Juana Molina soon
* Juana Molina is recording with Devendra Banhart
* Vashti Bunyan is touring the United States in September
* CocoRosie are playing the Touch & Go Festival

Sufjan Stevens recently joined David Byrne on stage. Here's what David had to say about it...
I asked Sufjan via e-mail if he wanted to do “Saginaw Michigan”, the song made famous by Lefty Frizzell, with me. (I thought many would think he wrote it for his Michigan-themed CD. I wonder if anyone fell for it?) He agreed and I sent him an MP3, chords and lyrics.

The Hot Ticket Isn't Ticketmaster
".... a $2 billion online market for hard-to-find tickets has sprung up and is doubling in size each year. Most of the action is on eBay Inc. and StubHub, where anyone can list a ticket for any event, and anyone can buy them. Other fast-growing outfits such as RazorGator, TicketsNow, and TicketLiquidator cater more to ticket brokers." [Business Week]

Eddie Vedder, The Thermals & Sleater Kinney's last show | The MP3s
SLEATER KINNEY'S LAST SHOW EVER (CRED)

THE MP3S
Sleater Kinney's last show took place at the Crystal Ballroom in Portland, Oregon on August 12, 2006. The Thermals opened and Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder made a surprise appearance. Ryan of Ryspace flew to Portland for the show, taped it, and posted the MP3s - HERE and HERE.
PITCHFORK WAS THERE
"In retrospect, Sleater-Kinney's final show-- at Portland's majestic Crystal Ballroom, where stage lights cast the band in giant hazy shadows on the wall behind them-- emphasized exactly how many of their lyrics were, in fact, about breaking up, leaving, and saying good-bye, a not unlikely foundation for a band comprised of a former couple (Tucker and guitarist/singer Carrie Brownstein dated for a time)." [Pitchfork]
I NEED TO POST THAT PLAYLIST
I noticed the "many songs about saying goodbye" thing too when picking songs for my tribute to SK Sirius radio show, which aired before the last-two Portland shows, but after their last NYC show. I still need to post that playlist.

An interview with David Bazan (Pedro the Lion, Headphones)
"David Bazan (born c. 1976) is an indie rock singer/songwriter from Edmonds, Washington. Bazan was the lead singer and creative force behind the now-defunct band Pedro the Lion and is currently the lead singer of Headphones, a band he formed out of his interest in synthesizers. Additionally, Bazan is a member of The Soft Drugs, a band fronted by former Pedro the Lion drummer T.W. Walsh." [Wikipedia]
"Bazan recorded his first solo project, the EP Fewer Moving Parts, in between touring as a member of The Undertow Orchestra."
BrooklynVegan interviewer Paula Pou caught up with Dave on the phone on August 8, 2006. They discussed his new EP, Low bassist Zak Sally, his favorite NYC venues, Deerhoof, Pitchfork, Micah Hinson, and more...
BrooklynVegan Paula: What’s up Dave? Finally catching some downtime?
Dave: Sort of. We had a project here at the house. We had some storage space, which was basically the old studio, that was full of random shit—more or less—and we brought it all out and had a garage sale. We had a busy weekend.
BrooklynVegan Paula: You’ve always been lauded for your storytelling as a songwriter. What was the writing process like to Fewer Moving Parts?
Dave: All of the songs were written when Pedro still existed last summer, except for “Fewer Broken Pieces,” which I just finished a couple of months ago. The rest of the songs had been written for a Pedro record when I thought there was still going to be a Pedro record. Toward the end of the last summer, around September, things started to disintegrate and I made the decision to drop the name. A couple of the songs seemed even more perfect for a David Bazan release.
BrooklynVegan Paula: Did you feel like you got away with being more open or honest?
Dave: It’s hard to know if I got away with it or not. I kind of have an ever-changing standard about that stuff. The first song on the EP, “Selling Advertising, “basically came out fully formed in 35 or 40 minutes and for better or worse I always feel that’s a strong indicator of it being true of what’s going on in my subconscious. To me that’s an important part of the writing process. It was the same thing with “Fewer Broken Pieces” too. It had been unfinished for months and I just sat down and started strumming one day and 20 minutes later it was done. I’m still working through how to be creative and how to pin down that process, but when something comes out that quickly and I like it, I usually tend to think that it means something and that the song should exist and be released for better or worse.
BrooklynVegan Paula: Why release two versions of each song on this EP?
Dave: The idea came about because I was really into the acoustic version of “Cold Beer and Cigarettes.” That was the very first demo that I made of it. When it was finished I demoed it several other times and none of the recordings were as compelling as the acoustic one. I wanted it to be on the EP, but I didn’t want the definitive version of the song to be just an acoustic guitar, so I started thinking about whether it would make sense to have both versions on there and then as I started interacting with the other songs, I started feeling similarly about all but one of the acoustic demos.
BrooklynVegan Paula: On “Selling Advertising” you go after music critics. Want to talk about Pitchfork?
Dave: To me, Pitchfork is a mixed bag. On the one hand I think it’s been really good for independent music culture and there are a lot of really deserving bands out there who might not have reached wide audiences as quickly as they did if it weren’t for Pitchfork. On the other hand, I think, there’s a dismissive tone to them if they don’t like a band—there’s a flippancy that I think is really destructive to the culture and the way that people think about music. I have a tendency to do that too—I think everyone does—to say, “Oh, that is totally worthless. That song or that book has no value.”
I read an interview with Dave Eggers in one of the weeklies and the guy interviewing him sort of snuck in a little jab at one of Ethan Hawke’s books in one of his questions and Eggers kind of snapped at him and said something along the lines of, “If you’ve ever written a book or made a record or created a painting, you’d know just how almost impossible it is to complete something like that.” At the very least you can’t dismiss a piece of art the way that we’ve become accustomed to. That interview made me think about the way that I do that and having seen that tendency so often in print, I don’t really think it’s right. I think a lot of places like Pitchfork are guilty of being dismissive for the sake of entertainment and popularity or to make themselves feel big. I don’t really know what the motivation is, but it bums me out.
BrooklynVegan Paula: With a song like “Backwoods Nation,” (MP3) which finds you inciting “rednecks” to “pick up machine guns and kill camel fuckers,” were you going for social criticism or just getting stuff off your chest?
Dave: When I wrote “Backwoods Nation” it was nothing more than expression. Sure, it made me feel like a big man when I wrote it and it still has that quality to it where it’s satisfying to make criticisms like that, but when I wrote it I was just mad as hell. It was a couple of days after 9/11 and our response as a country—how the leadership of the country was responding—to that…I just couldn’t believe it. We’d be driving around the country just seeing some of the most public displays of bigotry that I’d experienced in my life—on bathroom walls, on bumper stickers and in conversations in diners. “Backwoods Nation” is just how I dealt with it. Playing it over the years, it still rang true to some degree although it is dismissive itself of certain people in a way that I think is not totally fair. It was another of those songs that came out fully formed and I don’t think it’s a definitive statement about what I think about all that stuff, but sometimes it still resonates with me when I play it.
BrooklynVegan Paula: So, you came in at #85 on Paste’s list of the 100 Best Living Songwriters. What does this mean to you?
Dave: It’s flattering, absolutely. But those lists are, you know…Bob Dylan and Neil Young are the top and then the middle and end are kind of arbitrary. And there are a lot of totally great songwriters that I honestly think are far better than I am that weren’t on the list. I feel lucky that some people would consider listening to my music solely because I’m on that list, but it still seems arbitrary. Also, full disclosure, I know the editors at Paste. I don’t know if they would’ve put me on there if they didn’t know me, but at the least, people should be aware of that.
BrooklynVegan Paula: How did you hook up with (former Low bassist) Zak Sally for the EP artwork? What should we make of the Paul Bunyan-esque David Bazan on the cover?
Dave: Pedro played the first of many shows with Low in 2000 and we toured with them in 2001 and 2004. Zak and I became buddies and when he left Low and started focusing on his drawing, he went on a book tour and wanted musicians to play at his reading/signings. I played one, he ended up crashing at my house for a couple of days and we came up with the idea to collaborate on something or other and this is what we decided on. I was really honored that he wanted to work with me. Part of his payment was a hammerhead shark in a bottle that I got at Ye Olde Curiosity Shoppe down by the waterfront. They also had a pig with three heads in a jar down there.
Anyway, he came up with the cover on his own. The first thing he emailed me as a PDF was the cover and I was kind of freaked out by it. He’d warned me that the character on the cover was going to resemble me, but I still have mixed feelings about being on the cover. It was his thing though. The concept isn’t particularly flattering, but it’s complicated because when he left Low I think he sort of wished that the band would end and when it didn’t he came away with a lot of complicated feelings and I’m sure that informed what he drew and the way he presented it. I was really happy. It has a tension to it that I like and I’m glad he put it in there.
BrooklynVegan Paula: At the other end of the spectrum, what’s going on with your other post-Predo project, Headphones? Will your interest in synths seep into your full-length solo release?
Dave: I just played a show on with Tim Walsh as Headphones, but I think what I’m going to focus on right now is the David Bazan album. Headphones will come soon after that’s done.
As David Bazan I have a lot more freedom with instrumentation. My records will probably be all over the place, so yeah, there probably will be a lot of synths on there, but it’ll be in conjunction with a bunch of other things and Headphones is going to remain in just synths and drums, without other instrumentation.
BrooklynVegan Paula: I read an interview where you said breaking up Pedro had actually strengthened your friendship with Tim Walsh. Do you guys plan to collaborate? What’s he up to these days?
Dave: He’s trying to play Soft Drugs shows and selling the EP online. He’s also got a day job as a Web programmer for McGraw Hill Publishing. I think we’re going to hang out and go watch Miami Vice tonight. I see him every couple of days and we get to play a lot of music together. He’s my best friend, but it’s still complicated and we do make music together, but we’re trying to keep the boundaries pretty clear as far as the “Dave Bazan” thing is concerned so there are no misunderstandings and no hurt feelings.
BrooklynVegan Paula: You were on tour with Micah P. Hinson. Did you guys hit it off?
Dave: That guy’s awesome! He had a guy playing with him called Nick Phelps and we all just had a great time. It was a great tour.
BrooklynVegan Paula: Are you planning on hitting the road again soon?
Dave: There’s going to be another stream of little solo dates in Texas and the south in the near future and then once the record comes out around March or April, I’ll hit the road with a bigger tour. I would like to get a band together for that, but it’s hard to know how exactly that’s going to work out.
BrooklynVegan Paula: Is there anyone you’d like to round up for a band when you go on tour to promote the full-length?
Dave: Hopefully playing as Dave Bazan and having the baseline of that being a solo show would mean that I would get to goof around with a bunch of more people that I’ve gotten to in the past. I don’t know if it’ll happen during the upcoming tours, but I really hope to go over to some friends’ houses more often and make little recordings here and there.
BrooklynVegan Paula: Do you have any dream venues you’d like to play next time you’re in New York?
Dave: I’ve never really been to any big venues over there. I hear about Irving Plaza and Webster Hall, but I really like Bowery Ballroom—that’s one of my favorite venues in the country. I played at Southpaw a couple of times and that place was also pretty amazing. But I guess Clear Channel owns Irving now so that’s kind of out for the time being.
BrooklynVegan Paula: What are you listening to?
Dave: I really can’t stop listening to Deerhoof right now. I’m also listening to this 90s band from Nova Scotia called Local Rabbits—I’ve been listening to the shit out of their record.

But Opus’s founders, Stephen Choi and Erica Rubin, promise their venue will be nothing like a rowdy, drunken nightclub." [The Village]
