Beirut @ McCarren Pool, Brooklyn, NYC | pics
Beirut played a free show at McCarren Pool in Brooklyn yesterday (Aug 13, 2006). Not only did they sound great, their professionalism as a band continues to grow. Recently back from playing Moscow, everyone on stage seemed to have a much better grasp of their instruments (and the songs they're playing with them) than the last time I saw them at Northsix (which was infinitely better than their first show at Knitting Factory).

The Beirut show was even more crowded than the free Of Montreal show, and the (not free) Sonic Youth / Yeah Yeah Yeahs show the day before. Someone told me there was close to 7000 people there.

Deerhoof: band of the day.
Neither band could really play their instruments, but Deerhoof at least incorporated it into their sound.

solid show. (no pics/commentary on deerhoof?)
Posted by Anonymous | August 14, 2006 2:40 PM
7000+ huh...it still didn't feel too packed and it was pretty comfortable at the venue. The weather was perfect for an outdoor show too.
Too bad we only have a few more weeks left, these free shows have been awesome.

does anyone know what MTV was filming there? they were having people sign releases for a "reality show".
Posted by Anonymous | August 14, 2006 2:44 PM
I too thought the best band of the day was Deerhoof and then Apollo Sunshine. Beirut are good but their live show needs some practice.

Deerhoof is more than capable of "playing" their instruments. The drummer is amazing.

Trucker caps are so lame that they are back in style, get it? Bedford Ave has all the hot fashions. I bought my condo there.

deerhoof was horrible. i can't believe people stuck around for that noise. beirut was a bit more bearable. apollo sunshine was the best band of the day imo.

i peeed in the corner of the pool. during deerhoof so i wouldn't miss any of the show.

"Deerhoof is more than capable of "playing" their instruments. The drummer is amazing."
Yes, the drummer was good, but his kit sounded like shit. The snare sounded like a wooden block and crash sounded like a trash can lid. But he was good. The band would be so much better with a bass player and the singer concentrating on singing.

in response to "Pisser," that's awesome man! i totally took a steaming dump in the corner of the dodgeball court two weeks ago because Dead Meadow was rocking my ass.

beirut suck! i left because i couldnt deal with their obnoxious songs that all sounded exactlty the fucking same. i wanted to see deerhoof, but i just HAD to leave.
A band should be more than fucking capable of playing their own instruments, i usually i agree with your posts, but, ah, whatever. Ditto to whoe ever posted about deerhoof's drummer.
Sorry to all you Beirut fans.

From the New York magazine profile:
But no matter what its influences, Beirut has to sound old, and soulful, and somehow off. “I like it brash and drunken and full of feeling. When our new trumpet player came in, he sounded very regal and was perfectly alliterating all the notes. I remember saying, No, you have to slop it up!"
Posted by Anonymous | August 14, 2006 4:11 PM
i thought beirut put on a decent show. it was tough to hear some of the instruments though, overpowered by trumpets or drums. i really only heard the 2 on the right (violin and accordian/cello) toward the end of songs.
apollo sunshine got on my nerves.

The sound mix during Beirut was awful. Not sure if it was just the mix, or if they just need to work on their live show a LOT more before attempting to live up to the hype that surrounds them, but i was sorely dissapointed with what I heard..Apollo Sunshine rocked it 150% though...they were great!!

Beirut were completely sloppy (not in a good way) and sounded like pure shite.

we must take pity on the fools who dare deny the awesome majesty of deerhoof.

I guess this is what happens when the Indie Yuppie crowd shows up and more "difficult" bands get a lot of press. I am sure when the Shins and Iron & Wine play everyone will rejoice in unison.
Posted by JRM | August 14, 2006 6:19 PM
holy lord this band sucked
Posted by Anonymous | August 14, 2006 6:22 PM
Fuck beirut. They were like way not as cool as Apollo Sunshine. I was reading this stuff about how Zach Condon lived in a shack in Albuquerque NM and was in a gang called the Vipers and was gay. And he c an't play the trumpet even if he does look like Chet Baker (junkie era even).
Posted by Dance Machine | August 14, 2006 7:27 PM
Zach Condon, more like Zach CONDOM (a dirty one at that)
Posted by Apollo Sunshine Lover | August 14, 2006 7:31 PM
beirut are a lot of dirty gypsy children. who let them have an accordion? why do they shout so much? i'm confused! so confused! zach condon is hot though, all my 14-year-old friends want to have his babies.
Posted by three days of the condor | August 14, 2006 7:34 PM
beirut is WAY arrogant. i met him recently and he just kept bringing everything back to him and how "the blogs love him"
annoying
Posted by Anonymous | August 14, 2006 7:42 PM
August 13th, McCarren pool . Zach condon runs victory laps around haters! Beirut wins!

he should watch his back.

apollo sunshine may be the most boring band on the planet
Posted by longlivebeirut | August 14, 2006 8:00 PM
oh yeah Zach TOTES talks about NOTHING except HOW MUCH the blogs LOVE him, like, the other day, I was totes HANGING OUT with ZACH CONDON and I was like "Dude," and he was like, "Dude, have you heard about how the blogs LOVE ME? Do you LOVE ME? Let me quote you a blog that LOVES ME!" and it was mad borez and then we had sex on a bed of ukeleles but it turned out it was just a dream.
Seriously, I would cry laughing if Condon said that shit. The idea of it is that absurd.

I like Beirut, but they were a bit underwhelming yesterday. And that dude in the red shirt does need to chill.
But all you people saying Deerhoof sucked?! Jeez, makes me remember how Bush got re-elected 2 years ago - lotza lotza idiots....
Posted by Nicolai | August 14, 2006 11:17 PM
It's interesting that people in the blogosphere now feel like they can make calls regarding who should and shouldn't be in a band-- as though they can vote whomever they like off the island. Was this true before this kind of forum existed? Like the band or hate the band, but don't be like: Well, it would be a cool band if they would listen to me about what the lineup should be and what everyone should do onstage and how attractive the singer is or isn't and what the violin player should wear.
But feel free to disagree.

Pic #2: A trucker hat? Excuse me while I place my Beirut CD under this large hammer...
Wait, scratch that. It's sideways. The hat is sideways. All is forgiven. Sideways irony is still fresh.
Posted by Glenn | August 15, 2006 12:25 AM
dude in red shirt was refreshing. it was good to see some young drunk id rile up the crowd of jaded hipsters. blog bands need more fun dudes like him!
Posted by nick | August 15, 2006 2:22 AM
The fact that someone could compare George W. Bush's re-election in 2004 to not liking Deerhoof is one of the most ridiculously dumb and funny things I have ever heard!!!
Cause, you know, nothing makes me remember how bad that dude sucks than someone else's saying how bad some band sucks!
Posted by Anonymous | August 15, 2006 8:30 AM
Beirut, though they have great and creative songs, is a fucking studio creation. End of story.
Deerhoof is a live band.
Posted by Anonymous | August 15, 2006 8:42 AM
long story short, beirut are a sorry excuse for a band, and becuase of them, I just had to fucking leave mc pool, even though i wanted to see deerhoof again. I COULDNT TAKE IT, HOW COULD 7000 PEOPLE STAND THERE FOR THAT ENTIRE SET? AWFUL

Posted by Anonymous | August 17, 2006 7:37 AM
deerhoof (who i believe are a very good band) have been around a while and have played plenty more shows than beirut.
beirut are young, inexperienced and very very promising.
it's sad to see this negative bollocks being peddled.

so i don't get it that this post starts talking about how Beirut "on stage seemed to have a much better grasp of their instruments (and the songs they're playing with them)"...this is a prime example of people being more in love with a concept that a product. i'd imagine a band should be pretty tight if they are playing to 7K, but the blogosphere has already deamed this band to greatness and they are publicily learning how to play their shit. come on now, get real for a second here...
...and they were OK last night at a very sold out Khyber here in Philly. I felt GET HIM EAT HIM blew them away.
