CBGB stiffed Gothamist?

"As a side note, CBGB's - which we are very sad to see go, is apparently going with a lot of money made from these shows. As an example, we had a good tunrout on Monday yet they left us with a total of $25 to pay the three bands with. That's $2.27 per band member. That's so punk rock." [Gothamist]

anyone know set times for joanna newsome tomorrow ?

Gothamist is overrun with inept writers. It's generally amusing, at times pretty fucking sad. But by today's relaxed standards, I guess they're fine.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2006 3:24 PM

fuck the gothamist. i don't see how they ever graduated with their horrible spelling.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2006 3:26 PM

The sound guy and bartender were at least doing some work (I doubt the latter was paid from the door till). But, they "employ" THREE "bouncers" to sit by the door, watch TV and check the occasional ID. On a monday night? I believe they each made $50.

CB's is known for having incredibly high expenses that they have to cover before the bands get their cut. Higher than any other club in Manhattan or Brooklyn that I've dealt with. Considering it's a shitty (history aside) venue, it sucks. And yeah, why the fuck do they need that obnoxious TV in the entry way?

KILL THIS PLACE ALREADY.

It's the humane thing to do. If Bowery Presents or Johnny Beach were booking this place they would not be the pathetic wounded animal begging for mercy that they are.

When was the last time anyone you know went to a show at CB's? Seriously, maybe you had a friend in your office 3 cubicles away who's weekend warrior band got a slot if they guaranteed 30 attendees? But that's it.

Any shred of cred that this place ever had has been decimated by the fact that you can buy CBGB's shirts at every Urban Outfitters in America. Thereby ensuring I'll never wear one again.

Can we get this over with already!?

i generally spell things correctly, though i understand the frustration with the lack of spell checks on the site...and, hey, thanks for keeping tabs! for the record, i changed "tunrout" to "turnout" immediately, and it took a good hour for that change to show up on the site.

however, i'll do my best to misspell some more so you all have something to comment on everyday.

Is it so hard to capitalize "I"?

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2006 4:00 PM

Lighten up. She may be very busy and not have either the typing skill to capitalize the first person pronoun quickly or the time to do so while hunting and pecking. Or something. Why is it such a big deal? Typographical errors are nothing. Gross errors in spelling and/or grammar, though...

Posted by a known grammarian | August 23, 2006 4:10 PM

If Bowery Presents was booking this place, it'd be $25 every night instead of $7.

Posted by J | August 23, 2006 4:12 PM

grammarian -- I've seen more than just spelling errors on gothamist. Word usage, syntax, etc. I'm not saying it's a shite site. Entertaining and informative stuff, mostly. It's just sloppy, that's all.

yawn . . . boring

Fuckin' hell! Dont leave me hanging! Finish the damn sentence!

this is pretty much par for the course in all smaller NYC clubs

bring more people -> make more money

bands that fill rooms get guarantees, and those that don't are lucky to get the gig in the first place

Sin-e doesn't even pay bands on Monday nights

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2006 7:14 PM

She's actually quite stupid. Anyone that doesn't investigate the percentage of the bands' take at a venue PRIOR to "organizing" a show there obviously shouldn't be setting up shows to begin with. Not the clubs' fault they're actually trying to make money. She's a moron for not looking into it prior, and the bands are dumber for depending on her to get paid.

newsom should come on tomorrow something like 6:30-7 i'd guess. martha opens (5-5:30ish) and the show ends at the latest 10pm. hope this helps somewhat! ah, i'm so excited to see her again!!!

It's one thing to admit making "only human" mistakes and typos, but another entirely to make tons mistakes and typos, admit you never really proofread before posting, and then call yourself an "editor."

Vegan Man - Time's Up!

Let go of the CBGB stories. They're unnecessary to the excellence of your blog! This CBGB's wake has been goin' on WAY TOO LONG....

1. how many people showed up?
2. jen is a idiot
3. is it that hard to hit spellcheck before a post?

Posted by Anonymous | August 24, 2006 10:24 AM

Jen looks fit in that Gothamist T-shirt. I'd like to see more pics.

Posted by rascalnikov | August 24, 2006 10:40 AM

"how many people showed up?"

Probably not many. They had to resort to spamming BV in another post about CBGB.

http://www.brooklynvegan.com/archives/2006/08/the_final_cbgb.html

SPAM. SPAM. SPAM. They can't do anything else right. Also, for the "editors" at Gothamist, there is no such club as CBGB's. First of all, if you are going to get the name wrong, call it at least CBGBs. "CBGB's" implies possesion. Possession of what?

Posted by Anonymous | August 24, 2006 10:43 AM

Boy this blog would be so much better if people didn't comment. What a bunch of whiny bitches.

it's the hipster way.

You guys realize there's more than one "Jen" at Gothamist, right? Talk about attention to detail...

As for using, or not using, the apostrophe in the club's name... technically, of course, there's no "s" in the name at all. It's CBGB (Country Bluegrass Blues). But since many add the "s" (it's more fun to say, that way) let's take a minute to figure out how to spell it.

The commenter above says the apostrophe implies possession. Which it doesn't, but, for argument's sake: Why not? Without the acronym, it makes a pretty lousy name for a bar/club. Possession could be implicit, as in "Home of" or "House of." "CBGB's" could mean the room belongs to the music. Not a bad idea, that.

But apostrophes aren't only used to denote possession.

They can also be used to abbreviate. In this case, we could look to the full masthead of the bar -- CBGB & OMFUG -- and suppose the apostrophe represents the absent "& OMFUG" the same way "nothin'" gives a shout-out to its missing "g," yo. But this is ungainly, and would require the club to be plural...

...which it is, actually. "CBGB" has three spaces -- the main club, the 313 Lounge, and CBGB Gallery (these later two often going under the name "CB's Lounge" and "CB's Gallery"). There appear to be competing schools of grammatical thought on this, but: Apostrophes can also be used following plural acronyms (CD's, etc.) -- as well as plural symbols ("?'s"), dates("1960's"), letters ("P's and Q's"). You could use either "CBGB's" or "CBGBs," so long as your usage is consistent.

Considering CBGB is a made-up, privately owned and trademarked "word," though, why not go to the guy who made it up and owns it? Google the name, and the club's official website comes up "CBGB's;” though, through most of Hilly Kristal’s own “History of CBGB” on the site he uses “CBGB,” he also uses (at least twice, on pages 9 and 23) “CBGB’s,” and not in obviously possessive instances. While those could be mistakes from webmaster/data entry types, the official compilation album the club released on Atlantic Records in 1976 was called “Live at CBGB’s.” Apostrophe-plus-s.

But wait: We’re talking about CBGB (or CBGBs, or CBGB’s), right? The punk club named after bluegrass music? Why not just spell it however the fuck you feel like spelling it?

J, didn't you have anything better to do than write that comment?

Posted by Father Time | August 26, 2006 3:23 AM

Good lord. All this concern over spelling in the most amorphous language in the world? A language Internet 2.oding to the maxx? You try researching, writing, linking and editing the volume of copy Gothamist puts out there. Typos are FUN anyway and help generate traffic because, you see, if YOU make the typo, others probably make it also...

A'ight? Can you feel the zight?

"J, didn't you have anything better to do than write that comment?"

I agree. Someones seriously needs to get laid.

Posted by Anonymous | August 27, 2006 6:20 PM

I would just like to say, that I know for a fact, that the piece of crap show that Gothamist had play CBGB's drew a total of 40 paying people. With having to pay bouncers and soundguy (as useless as some of you mind find them), the douchebags at Gothamist didn't deserve any more than the money they got. Draw a crowd...get paid...it doesn't get much simpler. That idiot makes it sound like they made a killing of the sweat and toil of hardworking bands that derserve some reward. The bands blew...the club made 70 bucks.

Enough said.
