Devotchka | 2 nights @ Spiegeltent, Little Miss Sunshine soundtrack & 2006 tour dates

DOWNLOAD: Devotchka - Venus in Furs (V.U. cover) (MP3)

Devotchka That CD there pictured to the right is the EP Devotchka put out in May. Curse Your Little Heart is six songs, three of which are covers of Siouxsie And The Banshees, the Velvet Underground and Frank Sinatra. One-third of the album is available for download at Harmonium.

Have you seen Little Miss Sunshine yet? I had no idea when I previously mentioned it that so many people hated the movie. More importantly I forgot to mention that Devotchka pretty much performed the whole soundtrack....

Don't be fooled by the "various artists" credited as performing on this soundtrack: the CD actually has a rather uniform tone, and mercifully it's a lovely one. Composer Mychael Danna is paired with the Denver band DeVotchKa, who perform his score and offer a few tunes of their own. Making excellent use of strings, tuba, and squeezebox, they set a mood that echoes the movie's warmly idiosyncratic one.

Remember the Spiegeltent? The new temporary venue's been open for weeks and I still haven't had the chance to check it out. Hopefully that will change by September 8th or 9th when Devotchka perform there two nights in a row. All tour dates below...

Whew! Now people can see why Beirut is not a big deal. Go go go see DeVotchKa.

The "soundtrack" is really weird. The stuff that's billed as Danna/Devotchka is really just a rehash of their other songs -- they sound like instrumental versions of stuff on How It Ends, etc. The same melodies but little or no vocals.

And there's really only two new Devotchka songs on the soundtrack, one instrumental and one not, the other two songs billed as just Devotchka can be found on previous releases.

I haven't seen the movie but I love Devotchka so this is a warning! Don't buy this expecting a wealth of new Devotchka.

whoever thinks Little Miss Sunshine is a bad movie, is a complete and utter idiot.

BV:

I was at the Spiegeltent Thursday night for Vienna Teng/Duncan Sheik. I gotta say, the venue was pretty much a disappointment. Those "fabulous mirrored pillars" are mostly view-obstructors for the booth seats; there is a loud air-conditioner duct which doesn't do any cooling; the exterior noise from the beer garden out back was annoying to both the audience and the artists.

After all the build-up maybe my expectations were out of whack; but be prepared to be underwhelmed.

It is small and intimate, which is a nice thing about it.

I would love to hear some breakdown of who liked the place and why, and who basically agrees...

Little Miss Sunshine was cute. I think everyone can find a laugh from it. A little slow in the beginning but towards the end it picked up and was pretty sweet. I see it as a good first date movie. Or something. yeah
