DINOSAUR JR WITH GEAR @ WARSAW, BROOKLYN | AUGUST 29, 2006 (CRED)
Dinosaur Jr @ Warsaw

It seems like forever since we've heard one of these sad tales. J Mascis wrote...

After a blisterning set last night in Brooklyn, NY the band awoke this morning to find that the their trailer had been broken into and all of the gear has been taken.

J's Amma guitar, the mountain man guitar, Lou's Rickenbacker... EVERYTHING IS GONE. They are still taking inventory to see what else is gone but they were pretty much wiped out.

WE NEED YOUR HELP!!! Spread the word to everyone you know, every music store, pawn shop, club... anywhere you can think they may show up.

If you have ANY information let us know -Thank you.

The band is driving to Amherst to see if they can get enough gear together to play the scheduled show @ Toads in New Haven, CT but it may have to be cancelled.

And this list of the gear, and more info, is circulating via email....

"Attached and listed below is a list of gear that was stolen out of the Dinosaur Jr trailer last night (Tuesday 8.29.06) outside of their hotel in Long Island City, NY. We would appreciate spreading the word and passing this list around in hopes of recovering their gear. Please notify and alert your local guitar shops, pawn shops, music and web stores etc. to keep an eye out for this gear. Feel free to send this list to any and all band, tour and production managers, guitar freaks, touring personnel, venues, musicians and or thieves that you think could help us."

Do bands ever recover their gear once it's gone?

Posted by jerry | August 30, 2006 2:47 PM

holy shit...it sucks for shitty young bands but legends like mascis and barlow and murph? that is a total shame. its like stealing jimmy page's guitar.

Posted by sam | August 30, 2006 2:53 PM

woodside in da house!

DON'T MESS WITH QUEENS!

WHAT

THE

FUUUUUUUCK??!?!?!?

Disgusting!!! It don't matter if you're a nobdy band or a legend--your gear is precious. Those guys musta been heartbroken this morning.

Posted by Anonymous | August 30, 2006 3:08 PM

Best of luck getting your gear back, guys.

Posted by gwong | August 30, 2006 3:11 PM

Where in Queens was the gear?

There's a Sam Ash or Guitar Center or whatever on Northern Bouleveard near the Old Navy and the Stop and Shop. It's on the Norther edge of the Sunnyside / LIC area. They sell used gear.... I can keep my eyes open there. I'd love to bust the assholes who did this.

Posted by Klaus_Kinski | August 30, 2006 3:12 PM

watch ur language kk...k?

Posted by Anonymous | August 30, 2006 3:17 PM

Sonic Youth got their gear back (or least some of it) after a very similar public plea.

There is hope.

I was at the show last night. They were totally awesome and Lou said he is going to learn stuff from the later albums to play on the next tour.

Aside from the sentimental value of the guitars and drums, the words "custom pedal board" is troubling. Hopefully J can replace whatever was taken if they don't get their gear back.

this really bums me out.

Posted by nick | August 30, 2006 3:21 PM

I kept thinking to myself, "When is that Dino Jr. show happening? I really should find out when that show is happening." So I guees it happened.

Seriously, the stolen gear thing massively sucks, but that shout out to Woodside was pretty funny.

Posted by will | August 30, 2006 3:28 PM

man, why are philly and nyc the places of band gear theft so often in the last year. it's a crimewave!
oddly enough, 3 of the acts i saw in dc/baltimore before their tours were derailed as a result of these incidents (dinosaur, jr., the concretes, film school).

Posted by kushi | August 30, 2006 3:38 PM

"it seems like forever"? i feel like i hear about a band's gear getting stolen in nyc every couple of weeks. -especially- in queens for some reason. it really sucks.

Posted by al | August 30, 2006 3:43 PM

Message to bands don't stay in Queens!

Posted by Anonymous | August 30, 2006 3:51 PM

Some very, very valuable rareties in that list. Terrible...

Posted by Anonymous | August 30, 2006 4:01 PM

Here we go again! - i remember first reading about this kinda stuff early this year on bv as looking at crime stories. The offer still stands for bands looking for a guard to watch their truck/bus/ what have you. I am free most nights. This is crazy. Stop the madness.

Posted by Adminboy | August 30, 2006 4:40 PM

"Some very, very valuable rareties in that list."

Jazzmasters are nowhere near as valuable as a Strat, Tele or Gibson, even if it is from 1959.

Why does message say "Dinosaur Jr Gear Stolen (Brooklyn, NY)" when it was all stolen in Queens?

Posted by Anonymous | August 30, 2006 4:43 PM

Limozeenz called it.

Posted by Steev | August 30, 2006 6:10 PM

My wife and I had ALL of our stuff stolen out of our car when we were moving back to NYC from LA. Car was fully loaded (totally stuoid of us)...but so much work lost..I feel for J and the band..this is a tragedy that truly hurts...But if you are in a band, and regularly have so much expensive stuff out on the streets at night, you gotta come up with some kind of mobile impregnable vault!!! This happens SOOO often...

What hotel in Long Island City? I work in LIC and know a lot of people in the local scene there, I'll make sure to do a lot of investigating on this.

What scene? The crime scene?

Because there sure ain't no music scene

Maybe you should look a little harder.

I think the Village Voice said that Todd P is considering opening up his long-delayed space in LIC instead of Brooklyn now. It actually is a pretty cool neighborhood and the history of this city assures that the people are bound to eventually start leaving Brooklyn's escalating rents for somehwere else and I think LIC is not the worst bet for where they'll end up. Plus, as long as P.S.1 and Flux Factory are there, I'll hop on the G for a visit to Queens

Posted by will | August 31, 2006 10:39 AM

There is no scene in LIC. You have clubs like the Creek and the Cave which has no backline and hardly any regular customers. Add in a couple of lounges, and you still have no scene.

Posted by Anonymous | August 31, 2006 10:44 AM

Good Call Will. Indeed, there is so much room for a scene to pop-up in LIC, what with the wonderful art scene there. I think a venue would strive there. I am all for Todd P. trying to get something happening in LIC... I mean, doesn't Brooklyn already have enough happening places?

Posted by Klaus_Kinski | August 31, 2006 1:28 PM

don't even front! queens is where it's at! if i was a smelly hipster trust fund kid i'd shave, stop wearing girls jeans, take a shower and move to woodside

Posted by 61st - woodside 7 | August 31, 2006 2:51 PM

LIC is already as expensive as williamsburg/greenpoint. unless we're actually talking about astoria. for real cheap rents, we should all move to the bronx.

Posted by Anonymous | August 31, 2006 3:18 PM

thank goodness this didnt happen in philly this time.

Posted by mike d | August 31, 2006 6:42 PM

sorry this is late, but the crowd at that dino J show SUCKED!!! i tried to mosh a bit, with the kid with blonde hair, and it was all rich yuppies...fucking gay, nobody would mosh

Posted by j | August 31, 2006 8:52 PM

"There's a Sam Ash or Guitar Center or whatever on Northern Bouleveard..."

That's a nice gesture, KK, but of course stolen goods can be transported and fenced far from the location from which they were stolen. (By the way, that's a Guitar Center.)

"...that shout out to Woodside was pretty funny."

Even if you can find some humor in this matter (which I can't), this theft occurred in LIC, so Woodside can go fuck themselves.

"What hotel in Long Island City?"

FWIW, I called up Mapquest's map of "Long Island City, NY" (no street address) and then requested the list of nearby hotels: http://tinyurl.com/rl6lw Curiously, the Super 8 at the corner of Broadway and 14th Street isn't included. I wonder if any other hotels/motels were omitted.

Posted by native Astorian | August 31, 2006 10:02 PM

this really sucks.

whenever i hear this, i wonder if the bands left their van/trailer out on the street or if they were parked in a garage or a lot.

Posted by bad username | September 1, 2006 9:56 PM

I just emailed this article to Customer Service at Guitar Center in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens. I can't imagine J without his rusty guitar and beat up, punctured, pale green amp. Sucks.

Posted by teddy | September 11, 2006 2:04 PM

Damn it man!
Stupid scumbags!
I'm from Portugal and I like Dinosaur Jr. but it was Eagles of Death Metal that noticed me in Myspace Bulletins!
Search in ebay for the gear because sometimes that crazy assholes put the things they have stollen in ebay!
Please people don't steal! It won't drive you anyway man!
Sorry the lame badass english and wish you recuperate your stuff!

Posted by Fatso Forgotso | September 12, 2006 12:38 PM
