when do tix go on sale?
Posted by Anonymous | August 10, 2006 11:30 AM
tickets are on sale. you have to call joe's pub to purchase them. apparently the pub is having a problem with selling tickets to the 11:30 shows (11:30 shows are new to them); you can't buy them on-line or at the public box office. also, there's been an 11:30 magic numbers show on their schedule for the last two weeks. you can buy tickets through the pub but for some reason they haven't posted it on their site.

the magic numbers is 11:30 on august 30.

press release:
Last Gang Records is excited to announce preview performances by Emily Haines, in support of her debut solo album, Knives Don’t Have Your Back. Haines, who is best known as the frontwoman for Metric (and oft-member of Canadian collective Broken Social Scene) will appear in select cities for intimate performances before Knives is released on September 26th.
The decision to release a solo album, amidst the success and hectic schedule that Haines’ Toronto quartet Metric has garnered, came after years of writing on the side as an emotional outlet. Four years ago, with a large collection of very personal work, Haines set about recording her songs. Along the way, she met new collaborators — Sparklehorse’ Scott Minor—and enlisted old friends —members of Broken Social Scene, Metric and Stars; a group of musicians that she calls The Soft Skeleton. The end result is a beautiful and contemplative piano-driven album, complemented by string and horn arrangements. Haines worked primarily with producer John O’Mahony, as well as Metric guitarist Jimmy Shaw, recording in Los Angeles, New York, Toronto and Montreal.
The press’ advance reaction on Knives Don’t Have Your Back has been very positive so far. Under The Radar called the album "A haunting collection of piano driven tracks...Haines possesses vocal and lyrical prowess that encourage listening...This is a lovely record.” Adding, “Musically, you could liken Haines' output to some of Tori Amos' more menacing material, perhaps even the starkest of John Lennon's solo output...but mood-wise, many of the songs recall the beautiful, depressive laments of The Smashing Pumpkins' overlooked fourth album, Adore." Featured in the new V Magazine, Emily was called “immediately likeable…As the daughter of the late poet Paul Haines, it’s obvious that she has inherited a way with words.” Pitchfork called Knives “a decidedly quieter affair [than Metric’s ‘slick, hooky, electro-tinged rock’], awash in plaintive piano [and] deeply personal.”
Tour dates for Emily Haines and The Soft Skeleton are as follows:
September 12: Toronto, Ontario @ The Gladstone (for the Toronto International Film Festival).
September 18: Montreal, Quebec @ Le National
September 19 (2 sets): New York, NY @ Joe's Pub: 7:30 and 11:30
September 21 (2 sets): Los Angeles, CA @ Viper Room: 8:30 and 11:15
September 22: San Francisco, CA @ Café du Nord
*For Toronto, The Soft Skeleton Band will include the Tokai String Quartet, and a horn section consisting of Jimmy Shaw (Metric/Broken Social Scene), Chris Seligman (Stars) and Evan Cranley (Stars, Broken Social Scene).
For the remaining dates, The Soft Skeleton will be Scott Minor (Sparklehorse) on drums, and New York-based musician Paul Dillon on bass.

jax, pete: did you just give them your name, phone, and cc number?
seemed kinda hokey to me, but oh well.
Posted by rad | August 10, 2006 4:55 PM
yeah, kinda odd. but i've purchased tickets from them before that way and i've never had a problem. knock wood. also, the charge will show up on your credit card long before the show. so, if you don't see it you can call them back and raise semi-hell. and if i recall correctly, there aren't any service charges.

"coincidentally, she's at joe's pub the same night that sparklehorse is playing bowery ballroom. bit of a downer." [jax]
But the press release that BV posted states, "For the remaining dates [including those at Joe's Pub], The Soft Skeleton [her backing band] will be Scott Minor (Sparklehorse) on drums, and New York-based musician Paul Dillon on bass."

I don't think Scott is touring with Sparklehorse this time around.

i've got two extra tickets to the early show at joe's pub. $15 (face value). we also have two extra seats for a 4-person table there reserved, which means you would have to buy some food/drinks there too. (the latter part may be optional as i may be able to get out of it.)
