Godsmack vs. Arthur Magazine

I actually meant to post this a long time ago. Arthur Magazine interviewed Godsmack and grilled them on why they let the military use their music. It's controversial. Thanks Klaus for the reminder.

i always that babcock was a total douche for this. shooting fish in a barrel with his smarmy, douchebag douchieness. who cares?

Posted by coombs | August 4, 2006 1:48 PM

COULD THAT JAY CHARACTER BE ANY MORE OF A JOKE? HE SHOULD GET A LITTLE MORE INFORMED BEFORE HE STARTS ATTACKING SOMEONE LIKE THAT. UNLESS HE LIKES SOUNDING LIKE A COMPLETE MORON WHO JUST COMPLETED HIS FIRST, RAGIN' HIPPY LIBERAL PUSSY 101 CLASS.

I get the fact that Iraq is a complete f-up, but there is nothing wrong with recruiting people for the military? A strong military is a necessity for any super power. This country and all of our freedoms are here because of that.

That interview was fucking hilarious. Godsmack's PR people should do a little research before they start pimping to freak-folk central.

post a few more links to the same article next time please. :P

Its revolting when Bill O'Reilly does it and its revolting when this schmuck does it too. Pro-war, anti-war or whatever it gives you no right to be an complete utter douchebag to somebody like that..

Posted by Perry | August 4, 2006 2:37 PM

jay babcock IS a total douche. what is the point of this? i mean maybe if he were writing for a publication that godsmack readers would read, it MIGHT be a little more worthwhile, but WTF

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2006 2:40 PM

that was utterly entertaining

Posted by wes | August 4, 2006 3:30 PM

What a pathetic interview...god knows I hate Godsmack, but that Jay guy just made himself sound like an ignorant liberal.

Posted by C | August 4, 2006 3:38 PM

when the FUCK did liberal become an insult?

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2006 3:56 PM

That Godsmack guy is right. I love Godsmack and I love America. See that's my problem with some of the
alternative music here; no red hot chili peppers, no
trapt, STP.

Thank you for linking to this. Godsmack is my kind of people

Posted by Guy Ernest | August 4, 2006 4:08 PM

How did he "make himself sound like an ignorant liberal"? The questions seem pretty straightforward to me, and the guy from Godsmack seems completely unable to come up with an intelligent answer. Even his insults are boring as fuck.

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2006 4:21 PM

Everyone saying that Jay guy sounded ignorent, but did you get a load of the godsmack guy? how are you even thinking about jay, sully sounded like a total ass, computerized apache helicopters and pyrotechnic missile explosions, "we will prevail!!" are you kidding, jay should have strangled him with his bare hands

Posted by dan | August 4, 2006 4:25 PM

They're both retards. Jay is being a dick, but the singer guy is an ass too 'cause he's just licensing his music to something he hasn't really considered. I mean, think about it; if a band's music is in a car commercial, the car company is saying "THIS BAND = THIS CAR". Same thing with the military.

But anyways, Jay is barking up the wrong tree. Why is it only music journalists who have ideals nowadays? What a waste.

Posted by Erik | August 4, 2006 4:36 PM

yeah he's shooting fish in a barrel, but he's also pointing out this guy's ignorance on what his music is being used for. He pretty much just uses suly's words and actions against him... But i kinda see it more of a joke on their moron publicist.

Posted by KD | August 4, 2006 4:37 PM

i bet Jay Babcock actually thinks what he's doing is journalism

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2006 4:54 PM

Disclaimer: I didn't read very far into the interview because of all the extraneous question marks and special characters. I'd just like to comment on one of the comments above.

"...but there is nothing wrong with recruiting people for the military[.]"

There is when recruits don't get the full picture of what they're getting themselves into and what they're actually going to get for serving. (Aside: I think servicemen and women and vets should get lots more compensation and benefits than they do.)

I agree with Charles Rangel and other Democrats who think the draft should be reinstituted so that the poor don't disproportionately shoulder the burden of military service. But I realize that's just wishful thinking because the likes of Jenna and Barbara Bush would find a way out, just like their daddy did. Furthermore, I wouldn't view a demographically diverse military as a counterbalancing, mitigating circumstance for starting a war under a phony pretext.

Posted by I hate Republicans | August 4, 2006 5:12 PM

Sully was right, the U.S. Army was not receiving new recruits JUST BECAUSE of some clip of a Godsmack song got played in a promo commerical. That is simplifying things way too much.

Posted by Hunter | August 4, 2006 5:56 PM

Hunter: Is it really outrageous to suppose that there is at least one person who saw that commercial and joined up would not have joined up if he had seen that commercial sans Godsmack song? Of course the song did not appeal to anyone's conscious, reasoning mind. It could have been the straw that broke the camel's back in someone's subconscious mind, though. Modern advertising is all about reaching consumers on a non-rational level.

Posted by I hate Republicans | August 4, 2006 10:30 PM

Er,

"...who saw that commercial and joined up *WHO* would not have joined up if..."

Posted by I hate Republicans | August 4, 2006 10:32 PM

EVERY TIME I HEAR/SEE THAT COMMERCIAL I GET TOTALLY AMPED TA KILL SOME TOWEL HEAD MUSLIM SCUM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2006 11:23 PM

"every first world country suffers terrorist attacks, get used to it."

how sensitive.
sully may be an idiot, but at he's not a complete douche bag.

In slightly related news: I asked Stewart Copeland (who was the drummer of The Police) about the use of the opening measures of "Walking on the Moon" at the end of a commercial for the Nissan Xterra SUV that I saw (more than once) in 2000 or 2001. I blogged about it (and more) in my latest blog entry:

I got a letter from the government the other day
Opened it and read it, it said they were suckers
They wanted me for their army or whatever
Picture me giving a damn, I said never!

Posted by Black Steel | August 6, 2006 10:58 PM

It seems to me that Sully was differentiating between supporting the crappy government leaders who got us into Iraq and supporting the people,
some of whom are probably Godsmack fans, who got duped into joining, the ones who joined before they realized we'd be going to Iraq, who just thought it was a great way to be able to go to school or help support their mom or whatever and ended up going to war. And he was also saying that, while what's going on now is terrible, not having any military at all would leave us defenseless. It would be awesome if we could
live in a country this big, in a world ruled by a bunch of educated, rich barbarians and not have a military and still be safe. But right now we don't.

Fans, my words got twisted. This is bullshit. I actually think the military is evil and noodlin' with the lord is hackneyed. FUCK JESUS and FUCK AMERICA.
