Since any Joanna Newsom news is good news, here's the new album press release:

JOANNA NEWSOM Ys SET FOR NOVEMBER RELEASE
Stunning New Album Will Steal Your Heart

Drag City is set to release the new album from Joanna Newsom, Ys (pronounced ‘eees’), available nationwide on November 14, 2006. It’s been two-and-a-half years since Joanna’s Drag City debut, The Milk-Eyed Mender, captured the hearts of fans and critics with its lilting harp and vocal majesty. On Ys, Joanna has recorded five (yup, 5!) songs clocking in at fifty-five minutes. The album was recorded with Steve Albini, mixed with Jim O’Rourke, and features orchestral arrangements from the legendary Van Dyke Parks.

On Ys, you will hear a dream collaboration between Joanna’s voice, her harp, and a full orchestra. The album is a ride that ebbs and flows in a scrumptious cacophony of layers and drama. The wide-screened beauty of Ys is due to, among other things, the all-analog production mixed to tape and mastered at Abby Road.

For the uninitiated, The Milk-Eyed Mender was voted in the top 20 albums of the year in the 2004 Village Voice “Pazz and Jop” poll. Critics far and wide praised her unusual and superior talents. Live, Joanna brings passion and drama to the stage, performing with epic spirit.

Tracklisting:

1. Emily
2. Monkey & Bear
3. Sawdust & Diamonds
4. Only Skin
5. Cosmia

It was also just announced that Joanna is playing Pop Montreal, and as you know she's playing Brooklyn very, very soon too.

Am I the only one who just DOESNT get the big deal about her?

I still think The Milkeyed Mender is an amazing album and I'm looking forward to this. Back to the snide anonymous remarks, I guess.

I think milk eyed mender is a great record. she's got a unique sound & vision & solid lyrics [though sometimes too precious for my tastes].

but what i'm real excited about is van dyke parks' involvement. "Song Cycle" is one of the greatest records to come out of the 60s ... so the parks+newsom could be one hell of an ambitious, original, gorgeous record... or then again it could turn out to be an unintelligible heap of glitter-flecked cowflop.

either way i'm on it.

Is this named after the videogame Ys?

Joanna Newsom is crap.

Posted by Anonymous | August 17, 2006 12:04 PM

She sounds like a cat in heat. Totally unlistenable. I'm probably going to skip the Neko Case show just because I don't want to risk having my ears bleed after seeing Joanna Newsom play live.

weak-eared pussies.

Fuck you anonymous haters.

"Fuck you anonymous haters." Gee, how deep and insightful.

You get to a point in life where you don't have to follow the crowd and you can say to yourself "this just SUCKS". It's quite liberating.

Don't worry, you'll get there someday.

It's FAR trendier at this point in time to slag off Joanna Newsom than it is to like her, so there's no element of crowd-following involved. So what sort of thing do you like listening to, Mr. Weak Eared Pussy?

Posted by Jim | August 18, 2006 10:58 PM

Jim -- I was knocking the people who can't bear joanna's voice because it's "totally unlistenable" and/or sounds like a rutting cat. I.e., *they're* weak-eared pussies, because they're so easily pained by her voice.

Now if this had been a whitehouse or wolf eyes post, i could understand charges of unlistenable -- but people nowadays calling joanna's voice unlistenable reminds me of milquetoasts who couldn't handle dylan's nasal rasp in his heyday.

I got you totally the wrong way round - apologies. Damnit the internet is annoying.

OK so i just had a chance to listen to Ys.
IT IS MIND BLOWING! nothing you have heard for a long long time. it's like reading Madame Bovary!
a
ps. yes i was her fan so i guess those who think she sounds like a cat in heat will not be mindblown

Everything sucks. All i listen to is 50's polka b-sides from northern Cambodia.

Well, didn't we get a little over ambitious. What was she thinking this time? There is way too much happening in these songs that they become obnoxious.

I can't even remember what these songs sound like after listening to them. There's far too many instruments playing at one time in each song. She has lost her indie-ness and become an over produced monster.

I loved her last album. She does way better with minimalism.

she's too overrated! her songs are too conceited and selfish. she's hipster trash. i hate her now!

Give her a break! Milk Eyed Mender was a success! Look at Tibet right now, because of her album they discovered why humans don't have tails and buy energy drinks. Do you know what people in Africa did when they heard her music? Well, they invented a time machine out of ! Guys come on!

I love this, the release of "Cosmia," is mind blowing. It is a haunting beautiful song.

i wouldn't say that newsom is pretentious, she has studied hard and long in the literary world and uses precicely chosen words. i'd say someone pretentious would try their best to express things in a way no one could understand, and then expect them to. i think people would have a lot more respect for her if they read some of what she's written or said, aside from what she sings...
people can transform their voice to sound one way or another, but i feel her voice as is, is the only way she'll sound sincere; if she changes it because of the remarks she recieves... that'd be too bad.
like it or leave, i'd say.

Sesame Street want to be. Joanna Newsom is not unique. She is just like many people who can't sing well or write well. But she sounds like a 4 year old, in voice and writing.
