"A 30-year-old man who was beaten in the mosh pit at the Atlanta date of Korn's Family Values Tour on Sunday night has died......According to WSB, Richardson had been listed in critical condition following the fracas, in which two unidentified men attacked him in the mosh pit. Richardson had asked the men to be careful not to hurt his pregnant girlfriend and a mentally impaired child accompanying them." [MTV]

He was with a preggers girl AND a mentally handicapped kid? That makes it so much worse.

Posted by Erik | August 2, 2006 12:50 PM

WTF brings a pregnant woman to a Korn mosh pit? WTF was security?

Mentally impaired probably describes much of the audience.

Posted by Anonymous | August 2, 2006 12:53 PM

It's amazing what people call a 'mosh pit' nowadays. I remember the good old days at death metal and hardcore shows when Nazi skins, long hairs, and punks would literally beat the shit out of each other and walk away from it.

Posted by Klaus Kinski | August 2, 2006 12:57 PM

First mistake- going to a KoRn concert. All downhill from there.

Posted by dan | August 2, 2006 12:59 PM

That's awful. I can't imagine what the collective IQ of their fans must be.

Posted by Anonymous | August 2, 2006 1:17 PM

The other part of the story is that there was supposed to be no mosh pit. It was designated as a GA area. So the fault really seems to be that of security.

Posted by Anonymous | August 2, 2006 1:23 PM

Dude... you're not making any sense. People mosh in the GA standing area... how about you remove head from anus, go to a few gigs, and then wow us with your inane input.

Dan, i totally agree

Posted by Brian | August 2, 2006 1:46 PM

I remember seeing the Rollins Band back in '93 and some dude had razor blades taped up and down the arms of his leather jacket in the pit. No one was moshing at that show....

first of all, it's a Korn concert. Second of all, it's in Atlanta, is pretty much 100% drunk idiots.

Posted by djm | August 2, 2006 2:21 PM

Richardson's mother is right... they should stop doing concerts. "They" should stop doing anything where there is a risk of someone getting punched. Or there should be at least one security protecting each person at the concert... to make sure they don't get punched. SOMETHING HAS TO BE DONE!!

Posted by loller | August 2, 2006 4:20 PM

Not a Korn fan, but the IQs of most people who left comments here do not seem to be very high either. Many people who listen to only classical music think the same about you. Not that they're any better.

Posted by Anonymous | August 2, 2006 4:24 PM

I'm pretty sure when Pavement broke up the collective IQ of rock and its fans in general dropped. No one's getting any smarter by being a fan of Bloc Party.

Posted by will | August 2, 2006 4:52 PM

you people are fucking sick for finding wit in that. I don't care for Korn's music, and I probably wouldn't care for the people found in the mosh pits of their shows. But that doesn't make their lives any less important.

Posted by drew | August 2, 2006 5:10 PM

guess i'll be staying home listing to sirius ... i can take a message. cant wait for the news reports to catch wind of this though: KORN KILLS FANS --- or some lame bs blaming the band when security might not have done their job.

Posted by adminboy | August 2, 2006 5:11 PM

No one's getting smarter by listening to Pavement either. It's this idiotic notion that you are smarter than the people who listen to bands you don't like, that makes me worry about the intelligence level of "music fans" who always choose to write something negative about bands they don't like or get. I am always eager to hear good things about a band I'm not familiar with. I'll check them out if I get a chance. No one who likes Korn or Bloc Party is going to stop listening to them, because you say you're smarter than them.

Posted by Anonymous | August 2, 2006 5:13 PM

in response to God, it sounds like what the anon guy was trying to say is that this was an ampitheatre show and the section where this went down was a sloping lawn that's located behind the pavilion seating. i've been to quite a few shows and while this section is GA, it's not a mosh pit. the ajc article sounds like a bunch of assholes were tumbling down the lawn and crashing into people. doesn't sound like a mosh pit to me.

Posted by ag | August 2, 2006 5:18 PM

I'm smarter than you. Seriously, I am.

Posted by Anonymous | August 2, 2006 5:19 PM

Pretty brutal cynical board here. I find it hard to believe that a grieving mother would be more concerned with a lawsuit than with the loss of her boy. Pretty cynical indeed.
As for the two murderers, looks like there will be three dead people in Georgia after a Hotlanta jury gets a hold of them. Does that seem hypocritical to anyone or is that justice? I haven't decided yet.

Posted by Wow | August 2, 2006 5:22 PM

As far as intelligence goes, I do think that as groups along the bell curve are examined, most people at a given point along the curve have a preference for music that's more sophisticated or challenging than the music that most people at a point corresponding to a lower intelligence show a preference for, all other things being equal. But I don't think this difference has much importance, especially when it comes to evaluating someone's life!

Posted by former high school brainiac | August 2, 2006 5:35 PM

Not everyone who listens to KORN's music has a low I.Q., people. I am a school teacher with two college degrees and an I.Q of 137. (137 is in the Superior range). Anyway, I have been to at least 50 concerts in my life and many of them had mosh pits. Some were very dangerous, such as the ones at an Ozzfest about 7 years ago, and therefore I did not participate. My husband went in and came back out less than 20 minutes later with somebody else's blood all over him. However, we have both been in numerous ones and sustained injuries such as minor bruises. The worst we were ever injured was the night at a Stuck Mojo concert where we both left with a black eye from elbows. (We never even tried to stay together- you immediately get caught up in the movement.) It was funny when we found each other later because we were not hurt badly. All this to say: if you are pregnant - get out of the way! Your husband should not have to ask people not to hurt you or a child who is with you. YOU SHOULD HAVE NOT BEEN IN THE WAY. YOU SHOULD HAVE MOVED. It is tragic what happened and I feel very badly for the family. I really do. However, people choose to be in a mosh pit. It has nothing to do with security unless they are trying to stop one from starting. They are not there to referee the pit.

Posted by lori | August 2, 2006 5:47 PM

i love how since this happened at a korn gig, it's automatically assumed it must've happened in the pit. talk about spreading misinformation. this happened in the *LAWN* section of an ampitheatre.

Posted by ag | August 2, 2006 5:51 PM

former high school brainiac - i'd have to totally disagree. I went to a fun yet average undergrad college and most students were into music that you would describe as more sophisticated. However, I went to an Ivy grad school and people didn't have well-developed musical tastes at all. People who listen to indie rock or classical, etc., merely have a better or more well-developed appreciation for music which probably means they had piano lessons as a kid and had a middle to upper-middle class background (and they had time or took the time to develop said interest). I think that most indie music listeners are merely privileged (not in a bad way, just in a lucky way), but not necessarily more intelligent.

Posted by Anonymous | August 2, 2006 5:54 PM

well, lori, no offense, but you should read the article that musick linked up thread. it doesn't sound like he was in a mosh pit.

Posted by einstein | August 2, 2006 5:59 PM

Interesting comments about the general I.Q. of the audience. My I.Q. is 137 - in the Superior range. I am a teacher with two college degrees. That doesn't mean that I can't like the music of KORN. I was in a mosh pit at a KORN concert, but I understood that I was taking a physical risk. The pregnant girl and the child should have moved away from the pit and he shouldn't ask people not to hurt them. THEY SHOULD HAVE MOVED AND THE INCIDENT WOULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED. Come on, people. I know this is a tragic incident and I am sorry for the family. The men obviously were wrong and just plain inhumane in their actions. Hopefully there will be "three dead people in Georgia".

Several articles that I have seen, including the statement accredited to MTV at the start of this page, stated that the incident did occur in the mosh pit. As for the person who said you have never seen someone post an I.Q. score before, I merely was responding to all of the comments about the intelligence of the fans at the show. People still listen to Korn? I know tweakers in Bakersfield still do, but they don't qualify. Wait, people over 17 listen to Korn? Wow.

But seriously, despite the nature of the band, it really isn't fair that you can't go have a good time without some mouth-breathing abomination ruining everything. Happens all the time. But not like this. I hope the violent animals responsible for this tragedy get caught and gangraped daily in prison.

You people who sit and talk shit about the band are truly ignorant pathetic loser F^&*S.
I've spent plenty of time chatting with kids in korn based chat rooms, at gigs, at promo events and plenty of other places and the kids range from 8-21 and up. out of every 10 of the hundreds even thousands that Ive spoken with, 8 say that korn has not only gave them a will to live, but kept them from ending their own life. I too am one of them.
Now, this fan base you all want to call names...is built up of hurt, broken kids and children-adults, who have had a tragic disfortune of being either abused physically, verbally, sexually or by being abandoned by the one or both of the only people we should have nothing but unconditional love from by nature. OUR F&*()G PARENTS. Now, a band comes along with a passionate, caring, hurt just like us front man...who sings about our issues, our daily pain....but gives us hope and lets us know we are never alone. And you all would crucify them in a heart beat because 1 fucked up individual made an extremely bad call by bringing his wife and kid to the show. I feel for his wife and kid, i hope they find the guys who did it and justice is served because personally I hate violence, killing, hurting or seeing anyone else hurt. But ya know what.....that's what korn is all about....STOPPING THE MADNESS.
I would give my life for my belief in this band, after all its only because of them im here anyway. WE ARE ALL CHILDREN OF THE KORN. Like us, hate us, or just leave us the f^&K alone

I don't see why people are throwing such a fit. Yes it's sad, but it's the man's fault in my opinion. He took a disabled dude, a pregnant woman, and himself to the mosh pit, his IQ was low. This does NOT mean all Korn fans IQ is low, it simply means this guy was an idiot.

have some respect for this man, his unborn child, and girlfriend. theres no need for fighting at shows. everyones egos are getting in the way of actual fun. mosh pits arent the same anymore. i dont even know what to call them but a bunch of oversize white angry boys waiting to prove to everyone around them that they can punch one in the face. hardcore sh!t people. come on already. grow up and stop ruining the fun for everyone. and yes there are simply people who run their mouths but thats no excuse to punch a man. i hope this guy gets it good. i hope he rots knowing everyday that he killed a man over simply trying to protect his girlfriend and unborn child. rather then walking away he had to prove he was better then that man by punching him? i mean come on how old are all of us anyway?

Posted by Anonymous | August 8, 2006 4:04 PM

Generally, when people talk about how "dumb" other people are it's masking something about themselves. I was also unaware that drunken idiots were confined to Atlanta. But I guess if the "smart" people say so, it must be true.

Guys. I am dear friends with the victim's sister and I can tell you that aside from your expected grief, these folks are not acting out any differently than can be expected. A mother lost her son.
But anyway, my real point is that it seems most folks here do not know the story. Or at least do not understand what happened
MOsh pit or not, all Andy did was ask someone to be careful when they slammed into his pregnant friend. That dude, left and then returned LATER and beat the guy down. They were on the lawn which, if you know this venue is not where the "mosh" pits usually happen. The lawn is full of blankets and people sitting down watching the show from hundreds of yards away.
Anyway, that doesn't even matter.....Mosh pit's are fine.....but that wasn't the issue. The issue was that the guy simply asked someone to be careful or "watch it" or whatever....I do not know the exact words used. Whatever they were, they didn't warrant the beating.
Next time you're trying to mind your own business and someone bumps into you by mistake............be careful when excusing yourself........you may get beaten and you may die.

It's a sad situation and my heart goes out to his family. True, he shouldn't have been anywhere near the pit with his pregnant girlfriend and mentally disabled son in tow. Even if the confrontation did or did not take place in the mosh pit itself, that doesn't excuse the behavior of the neanderthals who mortally assaulted him. They apparantly have no self control over their actions and deserve to pay for their crime.

Although I'm not a fan of Korn, I do love Rammstein however, to say that their fans are of low IQ is ignorant and stereotypical. I only hope in their future concerts, that Korn make an announcement beforehand on the dangers of this unnecessary violence.
