"Eclectic artist Manu Chao will tour toured the United States this summer for the first time since 2001. The six-date outing encompasses a previously announced visit to Lollapalooza in Chicago on Aug. 5 and will also stop two days later at Brooklyn's Prospect Park as part of the Celebrate Brooklyn series." [Billboard]

"Manu Chao sings in French, Spanish, Arabic, Galician, Portuguese, English, and Wolof, often mixing them in the same song. His music has many influences: rock, French chanson, Iberoamerican salsa, reggae, and ska, and Algerian raï. These influences were obtained from immigrants in France, his Iberian relations, and foremost his travels in Mesoamerica as a wandering nomad following the disbanding of Mano Negra." [Wikipedia]

i was leaving my gym on 9th street when a stream of dirty world music hippies kept going down to the R train at 4th ave.

all i have to say manu chao is world music...mom rock.

Posted by sam | August 8, 2006 8:28 AM

Wow. i love america. "world music= mom rock" kind of how foreign diplomacy/nationalized healthcare/clean air= for pussies and commies.

Posted by Anonymous | August 8, 2006 9:45 AM

easily the worst analogy in the history of the language right there

Posted by Anonymous | August 8, 2006 10:06 AM

people who need to go to the gym are fat. people who live in park slope can't afford a real apartment. fat people suck. and people who live in park slope are poor.

more good analogies from brooklyn vegan.

schmuck.

amazing show last night.

amazing show last night. probably the best show i've seen in all year. the most energetic crowd and band for sure.

take a shower skippy.

There should have been a "knowledge of at least two languages" requirement at the show. Too many Brooklyn hipsters in attendence. When the crowd was chanting "oltra" at the end, I heard some clueless white people say "what are they chanting?". Go back to the midwest losers.

Posted by Anonymous | August 8, 2006 10:30 AM

man, you sure told me. i'll go back into my little hippy hole now with devil sticks in tow.

Wow I cannot believe the level of hate on a post about Manu Chao. I thought it was a great show, and I was glad to see a nice mix of people there.
Also they were shouting "Otra"... dunno if that was a typo and I'm not trying to be mean to you if you don't speak fluent Spanish but it's sort of funny how you are saying "stupid white people" for not understanding that they were chanting for another song and then you spelled the word wrong...
My white self and my white friend who were there both speak fluent Spanish though so you can't judge people by their skin color. Which we all should have learned in 3rd grade.
But really, Sam, what the hell? Manu Chao isn't world music... I don't think most people's moms even know who he is. Reggae roots and/or foreign languages do not = mom rock. Edumacate yourself.

Best show I've seen all year!

You know, Sam, I think I'll trust David Byrne's take over yours.

Posted by DJA | August 8, 2006 9:43 PM

sam -- you're a provincial dipshit.

Great Music, great crowd, a combination of colors created great energy. We should just listen to what Manu says and "STOP WAR" and that begins right here with us getting over our petty differences. White, Latino, Black, We're all human. Todos somos iguales no importe el color de nuestra piel. Probably the best concert i've ever been to.

screw 'sam' and uncle sam; I've been wanting to go to this show for 10 years and i finally have been able to on that day the 7th. My only regret is that Bidji (the great 2nd vocalist) and the trumpet guy (Roy) amongst others weren't there. Only 3 originals from Radio Bemba (other than Manu) were there. Great though; and everyone there knows they have never seen so many encores in their life, accompanied by amazing ska.

Yes, it was a great show. But for the vast majority of us who were unable to score a ticket (or pay the prevailing scalpers' rate of $300 on Craigslist on the morning of the show), the presence of a newly-erected fence covered with a black tarp was frustrating: we could hear but we could not see. A Celebrate Brooklyn staffer explained to me that the show was arranged by a promoter, as opposed to CB itself, and Chao's contract stipulated that the show be visible only to paying customers. Of course, the crowd outside the venue vastly outnumbered those inside and were generally good natured, dancing and singing along. A few efforts to scale the fence and rip down the tarp by adventurous fans were cheered by the rest of us, but greeted with stern action by the promoter's staff and the NYPD. I don't think NYPD made any arrests, but they firmly escorted fence climbers from the park.
One young office, after removing a climber, told his lieutenant that he had dealt with a situation that was "out of hand" and that he had removed "nearly forty" rioters. I had a good laugh at his exaggeration and wondered whether he was training to remove drugs, cash and weapons from the evidence room.

As for David Byrne, I'm in agreement with his take on the show. I am also sure he didn't have to pay a cent to get in.

"the presence of a newly-erected fence covered with a black tarp was frustrating"

all the "benefit" shows have that fence

Posted by Anonymous | August 9, 2006 6:06 PM

So, famdoc, you couldn't enjoy the music you were hearing for free because you couldn't see what was going on onstage? Boo fucking hoo.

Posted by Helen Keller | August 9, 2006 6:52 PM

It didn't even sell out until about a week before the show. I don't understand why people couldn't get their act togeher and just get a ticket - it's not like the Radiohead show which sold out in 10 seconds. Then they whine that they couldn't see the show for free? Get a grip.

Posted by Anonymous | August 9, 2006 9:33 PM

Hey Helen K.: My comments seem to suggest that I actually enjoyed the show, notwithstanding the fact we couldn't see the show:

" the crowd outside the venue vastly outnumbered those inside and were generally good natured, dancing and singing along."

But thanks for your insight, anyway.

Posted by famdoc | August 10, 2006 12:01 AM

helen keller: I know you're blind and deaf and all, but the show sold out WEEKS before the performance. I'm fairly certain the last ticket sold around July 20 or so (because that's when I started perusing craigslist out of curiosity to see what the demand was.)

I was shocked at the sheer number of people willing to pay ridiculous amounts for a ticket, but as for me, as good as $300 each sounds, I wouldn't have parted with my three.

i´m with the guy/gal who said, ¨Wow I cannot believe the level of hate on a post about Manu Chao.¨ i just spent 3 weeks building houses in uganda and the only thing i regretted was missing the manu chao show.
i was super excited to have found pictures and comments about the show, but baffled by the hateful, sarchastic and backhanded comments by some. i´m not trying to be judgemental or self-righteous, i´m just really surprised.

famdoc: Point taken. However, you also wrote, "A few efforts to scale the fence and rip down the tarp by adventurous fans were cheered by the rest of us..." Your support of the have-nots vs. the haves deserves scorn. Concerts sell out and many fans who would like to see a show get shut out. Deal with it.

helen keller: I was NOT the one who wrote, "It didn't even sell out until about a week before the show. I don't understand why people couldn't get their act togeher and just get a ticket..." Who's blind now? (And you couldn't think of your own nom de plume?)

Great pix.

His band Mano Negra was legendary and his fame on three continents is unsurpaased as a solo act.
Not only for his music but for his social stance.

He is what Bono claims to be, except he can be found at his little cafe in Barrio Gotico in Barcelona with the real people. He also refused to play the Live8 propaganda show because of what it was: corporate business giving a whitewash (or did you miss Bozo call Blair and Bush, caring compassionate human beings?) to the very people who are responsible. While U2 fronts for Clearchannel and Coca Cola, Chao walks the walks and talks the talk.
(Id like to think my hero Michael Franti has the same convictions as Chao and not Bonzo)

Manu Chao will take his guitar and play for the activists at the World Forum, Bozo will have caviar with the head of the world Bank Paul Wolfowitz (mr Iraq Plan). Manu Chao will play eco/activist friendly festivals like Esperanzah in Belgium) and he will take to the street.

Manu is the musician/activist we all would like be, no sellout is he.

and his possee runs www.radiochango.com
where you will find links to the best mestizo, patchanka or world music.

Hey sorry to butt in on the hate parade, but I'm going to the show tonight and wanted to know about the timing. Did he go on close to 6 or was there an opening band?

does anyone knows the name of the girl who played before him? she was great! peace to all and let's focus on what we have in common and not in what we dont... love and thanks.
