Sonic Youth / Yeah Yeah Yeahs | McCarren Set Times, Boston last night, & Tour Dates
YYY & TVOTR TOGETHER IN BOSTON | AUG 10, 2006 (CRED)

THIS WEEKEND IN BROOKLYN
Friday: 7pm - Sonic Youth, 8:45pm - Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Saturday: 7pm - Yeah Yeah Yeahs, 8:45 - Sonic Youth
LAST NIGHT IN BOSTON
"The sun had started to set, the heat of the day has lost its grip on the city, and thousands – 10, 12, 15 thousand — were filing peacefully into City Hall Plaza long before the headlining Yeah Yeah Yeahs were due to take the stage. All the makings of a perfect rock and roll evening were in place as Brooklyn’s TV on the Radio filled downtown with an eclectic mix of organic post-punk guitars and almost trance-y rhythms devoid of the electronic embellishments that are such of big part of the alterna-indie band’s studio sound." [The Phoenix]

When do these shows go on sale?
Posted by Bort | August 11, 2006 12:39 PM
That's bullshit. I wouldn't have bought a ticket for tonight if I had known Sonic Youth was OPENING for the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Their set better not suffer because of that.
Posted by nate | August 11, 2006 12:42 PM
Was at the Boston show last night. Huge crowd, perfect weather, and free. Doesn't get much better than that.

Oh shit, Sonic Youth is playing State Fairs? Are they becoming the NYC version of state fair bands like Journey and Leonard Skynard?
Hey maybe twenty minutes of feedback while your milking goats in the petting zoo or throwing balls at the dunk a clown might be kinda cool?

The show in Boston last night was the bomb diggity bomb. Pics @ Flickr.

sonic youth should never have to open for the YYYs...its just not right.
Posted by sam | August 11, 2006 12:58 PM
each band has an hour and half to play EACH night, so they should still get to do an encore and so on.. stop bitching

Thanks for the info.
Hey, where did this info about Wooden Wand opening come from? If that's a definite, I'm making the trip up there.

Any word on when BOTW is goin' on tonight?
Doors open at 5pm... so maybe 6pm??
Posted by bob | August 11, 2006 2:13 PM
How do you figure they each have 90mins? Looks like they each have 75mins. 10pm curfew at the pool i reckon....
Posted by Anonymous | August 11, 2006 2:22 PM
whatever happened to sets that last more than an hour??...especially given these ticket prices.
Posted by Anonymous | August 11, 2006 2:54 PM
I would have thought it made sense for the YYYs to headline, given that nowadays they are the bigger draw (if the full Roseland shows are anything to go by).
If you don't want to see one or other of the bands, just turn up late/early according to the set times bv has so kindly posted. Ta-da!!
Indie righteous indignation is never pretty.

Are they still not allowing cameras in to McCarren?

"Are they still not allowing cameras in to McCarren?"
Thank god they don't.

What's that supposed to mean?

Sonic Youth opening for YYY. The apocolypse is upon us...
Posted by Jdubs | August 11, 2006 6:58 PM
Wow, these comments are SO IRRITATING. The two bands were EQUALLY BILLED when the concert was announced, when the concert was listed everywhere, and when you bought your tickets. In sane-people-world, this means that each band will headline, but since one naturally has to go after the other, they thought they'd make it fair and give each the chance to play both earlier and later. Simple as that.
And why all of this self-righteous indignation about the Yeah Yeah Yeahs when, the last time I checked, everyone still loved them, their new album, and (eternally) their live show? Oh I get it. They can sell out Roseland so naturally they must suck now.
Jeez.

Hey, I *never* loved YYYs. What makes you think everyone did?
Furthermore, if I remember correctly, the full-page ad in the Village Voice announcing these shows displayed Sonic Youth's name to the left of (i.e., before) YYYs' name and did not state the order of performance, leading reasonable readers to believe that while YYYs were more than just a support act, they would nonetheless go on before Sonic Youth.
Posted by No No No! | August 11, 2006 11:47 PM
the yeah yeah yeahs probably could of come close to selling out both nights just by themselves.
sonic youth are lucky if they sell out irving plaza.
Posted by Anonymous | August 12, 2006 12:24 AM
I think Sonic Youth are gods and all should bow to them, but I felt the order of the bands tonight worked well. Sonic Youth brought a different energy to the stage and I don't think the crowd would have been into the YYYs as much in the daylight...
Both were awesome, but I had no problem with the order tonight. Y'all who go tomorrow will have to let me know how the energy is on Saturday.

Yo Vegan, thanks for publishing the set times. Appreciated. Though I think it's a load of crap that this website seems to be the ONLY resource out there with the info, which, is (no offense to you) ridiculous.

My review from Saturday night:
http://litigioushipster.typepad.com/
Sonic Youth totally killed it in the pool last night. Their show was beautiful, rocking, energetic, and experimental all in one. They opened with Teenage Riot, which I never, ever expected to hear (even though I'm not sure how often they actually play it). I was uncontrollably dancing, pumping my fist, and having a great time. Too bad most of those surrounding me were content to bob their heads. Which is OK, I suppose. It was an interesting crowd - lots of parents with their teenagers in tow. Sometimes it was obvious that the teen was into the YYY's (as evidenced by the girl next to me in homemade garb who clearly wanted to be Karen O), and sometimes the teens were into Sonic Youth (as evidenced by the group next to me with washing machine T-shirts).
I loved all of the new straightforward stuff - Reena, Incinerate, and What a Waste. Eric's Trip was totally unexpected as well, and again most of the people around me didn't seem to know the song. Weird. Do You Believe in Rapture was delicate bliss 100% was incredible, especially Thurston's guitar god antics throughout. He was definitely playing to the audience (as well as a camera). Maybe the show will be released in some form in the future. Turquiose Boy and Rats were pretty middling to me, unfortunately, but things picked up again with Jams Run Free. Pink Steam and Or were even more blissful than Rapture. Encore Shaking Hell was OK - fun to hear, but I wanted to rock out a la Sugar Kane some more.
The Yeah Yeah Yeahs opened the show. Throughout my disposition ranged from totally bored to sort of bored. Karen O is a great performer, and Zinner is a great guitarist, and even though the band was gellin' I just wasn't that into it. Perhaps its because I kept imagining Karen and Zinner better in separate contexts. I won't get too snotty here since I think that the YYY's music is a lot better than most out there, but its too bland for repeat listens or concert-goings by me.
Posted by litigious hipster | August 14, 2006 12:10 AM
both nights were great. I love both bands but Sonic Youth did outplay the YYY's not that anyone is keeping score.

if you check out my blog (shameless plug) I have a video of The World Looks Red from friday, which sounds great. A little review of the YYY's show and a ton of photos on flickr. peace.

"Yeah Yeah Yeahs @ McCarren Pool: Gonna Dress You Up In My Love
I never knew there was such a distinct disconnect between Sonic Youth and YYY fans. I definitely fall into this latter category but the division was very apparent last night. Before YYY hit the stage, I heard some folks asking (very loudly) WHO THE BAND WAS. They also were mumbling that they had heard of the song 'Maps' but couldn't really remember it until they heard it, or that they saw a video of theirs on MTV2 and turned it off because 'the lead singer is a crazy bitch'. I'll refrain from talking smack about Sonic Youth but well, here's one jab, when was their last good album? 1992?
In spite of the overzealous Sonic Youth fans, the YYY fans stormed right up to the front of the stage and enjoyed one of the best shows put on by Karen O and the boys, in years. Karen O came out in what only can be described as a typical Karen O outfit (via band costumist Christian, who was later thanked on stage before 'Maps'). As you can see, the keywords attached to this piece would be: gold, glitter, stripes, ridiculousness, shiny, and loud. It was phenomenal!!
I didn't attend the Friday show but I doubt the setlist had so many EP or FTT tracks as Saturday! Here's what we got: Black Tongue/Mystery Girl/Gold Lion/Cheated Hearts/Honeybear/Bang!/Phenomena/Dudley/Maps (acoustic)/Warrior/Rich/Y Control/Turn Into.
I nearly lost my shit multiple times. First, when I heard 'Bang!' which I haven't seen them perform live since the Siren Festival of '02. 'Rich' was also a pleasant surprise as it was high on my list of songs I was really itching to hear, and also one they rarely play.
Sadly I missed the Maxwell's show earlier this year where they busted out the acoustic version of 'Maps' (I was slightly sad when they opted for the electric version at the Bowery show) but I got a taste of that beauty last night. Finally the Sonic Youth fans shut their traps and soaked in the brilliance of that little ditty!
Followed by 'Warrior', Karen O's voice soared, just the way we love it. A perfect back-to-back treat. Of course, she went back to her signature growl on 'Rich' and throughout the rest of the set until the closer, 'Turn Into'. God love her!
As for Sonic Youth, I endured their set for 4 songs. 'Teenage Riot' was a nice opener but I stayed with the other tentative SY fans in the back. We all left shortly after one another. On the way out I contemplated asking one of the Sonic Youth fans WHO THE HELL THEY WERE but refrained. I guess YYY fans are more tactful. Or maybe we just love that crazy bitch."

I saw the SY - YYY show on 8/11. I went to the show mainly for SY. I was surprised that SY came on first, but it didn't really matter. That comment above that SY hasn't had a good album since 1992 is ridiculous - on Friday they played almost the entirety of "Rather Ripped". It really is one of their best albums. It's weird reading hipsters argue about whose favorite band is more popular. Kill your idols!
