The use of FAKE IDs is unlawaful | The latest from clubland

* photo by Tricia Romano for the Voice
"When you go clubbing now on West 27th Street, the first things that strike you are the searchlights. Placed at either end of the block at Tenth and Eleventh avenues, they light up the sky like a movie set, turning night into day. Then there's the huge electronic billboard that reads, 'Use of fake IDs is unlawful.' And then the cops, so many you can't keep count, lining the block, posted on every corner, handing out flyers detailing 'Nightlife Safety Tips.' ('Always inform a family member or friend of your whereabouts.')" [Tricia Romano - The Voice]

Thank God we've finally found a use for all the NYC cops.
I knew that they would come in handy some day.

Alright! Official countdown begins now as to how long this show will last. I say until Sept. 6.

Just another excuse for cops to gawk at female clubgoers.

ha!

they should start cracking down at misshapes. not just on basis of fake ids, but on felony counts of douchebaggery.
Posted by nick | August 29, 2006 7:01 PM
if they busted people for douchebaggery there wouldn't be many people left at the clubs.

i think you're all missing the point. if you are 18 you can die for your country or have sex with a 70 year old but can't get into a club? highest legal drinking age in the world. the US is backwards.

now why are u bring anna nicole smith into this?
Posted by Anonymous | August 29, 2006 8:05 PM
to doug: you have missed the point. this initiative by the police is probably in response to, let's see, the common usage of fake IDs, especially by suburban teenagers who end up piss drunk roaming manhattan, and in some cases, dead. i understand YOUR point (yes, it is silly that we can all go to war, etc at 18, but not go to a club, and yes, we are quite behind other countries on many more issues than this one), and perhaps you assume BV's point in posting this news is in alignment with YOUR point (though he expressed no opinion of his own), but by accusing everyone who's posted in response of missing the (which is your) point, you're, well, wrong. perhaps you're dissatisfied with the responses of BV's readers, and again, i'm on the same page of you with your opinion, but, eh, nevermind. anna nicole smith!

i think it's more about a response to all the attention in the media about the 2 attractive young ladies who were recently killed after going out drinking in manhattan...they want to make it look like they're doing something about it.

this paragraph said absolutely nothing. im actually pretty impressed by it.

I'm surprised that someone hasn't mentioned that this action was probably taken because NYU's underclassmen are terrorizing the city, sometimes for the first time in their lives, often completely unaware of the consequences of their actions... and their outfits.

i think the only place for underage girls is in my apartment, after say, 11pm, Thur-Sat.......i would NEVER turn down a fake ID!!!

fake ego > fake superego > fake id
NYPD needs to get its priorities straight

I got a flyer and a smile from a couple of officers on my way to see Gevil at Sol Friday night. I thought it was rather lovely they were there actually. Better watching over young people going to clubs than giving out parking tickets (bitter).

It only had to take a few horrible incidents in clubs across the country for this to happen. It's too bad that the authorities had to wait for some grant from the federal government to decide to do something. My evidence: the massive amount of overtime being sucked up for "exposure purposes" by the police officers outside. This over-stacking is not frowned upon as the managers of the grant need to show where the money went. If they do not use the money they will not receive as much as they did in prior years.
Fiscal spending played out as a clubland public service message. Cheers!

yeah, why aren't more people focused on that girl in the picture. i'm totally all over missed connections with that one. "you: walking to a cab outside a club presumably after using a fake ID/ me: on my computer at work, alone, desperate. please god let this work just once..."

^^....*white* young ladies...^^

But if you're Lindsay Lohan, getting into any club won't be a problem.

if you go west of 8th avenue in Chelsea....you are on your own ...thats always been where the shittiest bridge & tunnel clubs are..
Posted by jt | August 30, 2006 1:00 PM
you get to brooklyn by bridge and tunnel, yes?
Posted by Anonymous | August 30, 2006 10:14 PM
i'd be glad to stay in brooklyn if all you displaced manhattanites and bridge & tunnel kids got the fuck out.
Posted by Anonymous | August 31, 2006 9:45 AM
are you suggesting that's why you come to the city? to get away from all the kids flocking to your blocks? please, i'm not saying manhattan's where everything's going on, but don't kid yourself.

"...the 2 attractive young ladies who were recently killed after going out drinking in manhattan..."
Hadn't Imette St. Guillen been drinking in Brooklyn?
Also, Jennifer (I've forgotten her last name) was not attractive, judging from the glamour shot I saw on the front pages of the tabloids, for which she presumably looked her best. I guess a lot of men consider 'young' and 'drunk' enough to qualify a female as attractive.
