UNION HALL GETS BIRDMONSTER, ELF POWER, TRACHTENBURG, SHOWALTER, TAKKA TAKKA...
As you can see from the updated schedule below, Union Hall (the brand new Brooklyn music venue located in Park Slope) continues to fill out it's schedule with impressive rock and comedy shows. Will it become Brooklyn's best venue?

WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE BROOKLYN VENUE? | A CONTEST AND POLL
What is Brooklyn's best venue right now? Northsix? Warsaw? Southpaw? Magnetic Field? McCarren Pool? The Syrup Room? One of Todd P's other spots? Brooklyn Lyceum? Trash? Union Pool? Pete's Candy Store? Glasshouse Gallery? The Hook? Prospect Park Bandshell? BAM? Anything else? You can only pick one. E-mail your answer to BVCONTESTS@HOTMAIL.COM (SUBJECT: VENUES). I'll tally all the votes and post the results in a few days.

WIN TICKETS BY VOTING
Everyone who votes will be eligible to win a pair of tickets to one of the first four shows at Union Hall. Tell me in your email which show you want (Page France, Oppenheimer, Comedy, or Silversun). For some reason this feels like the most exciting Brooklyn Vegan submission in days. I can't wait to check Union Hall out

is union hall 21+ ?

Posted by Anonymous | August 2, 2006 7:09 PM

I've been to Union Hall, but not during a concert (I doubt they even had a show yet). The stage area is somewhat small. It is also filled with coaches, and I wonder how they will move them.

The place felt like a surburan lounge and was a tad expensive. Menu was filled with cutsy items instead of normal bar fare.

the place was filled with coaches? where they yelling at you to drop and do 20 and then do sprints?

when you compare the schedules for Brooklyn venues, North six pretty much consistently blows the others away (booking-wise anyway). I've seen Elf Power, Trachtenbergs, Showalter all play N6... more than once.

Re: the couches—I think you were looking at the upstairs with all the bookshelves and similar crapola. The venue is downstairs, with the dark walls.

Posted by CHE | August 2, 2006 8:41 PM

Oops, brainfart, I meant couches.

And yes, I am talking about downstairs. You have the small stage (elevated about a foot), a sitting area with couches, and then a small bar. Nice place for more intimate music, not sure about anything a bit rocking.

Celebrate Brooklyn cos 3 bucks ain't bad for Philip Glass even with a storm approaching.

i think it says on their myspace that the couches, etc, are removed for rock shows. And with NFL teams in precamp, I doubt coaches will be there anytime soon.

imagine... if union pool... was filled... with beer!

If N6 had Polish drafts and perogies I'd go with N6. But alas, they don't, and Warsaw does. Warsaw gets my vote.

Posted by Anonymous | August 3, 2006 11:04 AM

Warsaw has great sitelines, better bar, nice staff, food!, but perhaps the worst sound of any big club. What good is a concert if the sound sucks?

Posted by Anonymous | August 3, 2006 11:10 AM

is this a discussion about restaurants/bars or MUSIC venues? What does perogies have to do with it? Besides Warsaw books about 3 to 5 shows a month... N6 about 3 or 4 a week. Also... N6 is an INDEPENDENT venue. Warsaw is a corporate venue...

Posted by Anonymous | August 3, 2006 11:22 AM

Sound has been great for every show I've seen at Warsaw. Don't know what you're talking about.

...and perogies have EVERYTHING to do with how great a venue is.

Posted by Anonymous | August 3, 2006 11:38 AM

"sound" of a venue is such a subjective thing. It depends on so many factors... who is playing, where one is standing in the venue, how crowded it is, enldess other factors. I've heard people say particular shows were the worst sounding ever while at the same time other people say it was the best. A lot of times, certain bands just sound like shit live... doesn't matter whether it is the fanciest pa system in the world, they will still sound like shit.

Posted by Anonymous | August 3, 2006 11:41 AM

amen

Posted by Anonymous | August 3, 2006 11:48 AM

The only way you can get good sound at the Warsaw is if you stand all the way in front, and rely on hearing the actual amps, not the PA. But standing in front is for teenagers, obsessive fans, and short people. The Paul Westerberg show with just him playing was amazing though.

Others simply don't know what good sound or music is. These people listen to Britney Spears and Beirut.

I personally like Southpaw the best. No matter where I stand I can always see the show. Saw one at warsaw recently and had to stand on my toes the entire time to try to see something. Union hall is only a 100 person venue right? Can't really compare it to the others.

"Warsaw has great sitelines, better bar, NICE STAFF, food!"

the bouncers at Warsaw ARE the nicest of any venue I've ever been to.

was at union hall tonight for their first show. sound was solid, not so bad. maybe 80 people for page france. cozy not so crowded. hope it lasts. nice music between bands.
