KILLER WES
Welcome Wes (the nicest guy in the biz) to BrooklynVegan! He's gonna post about Hip Hop...

KILLER MIKE
Killer Mike

Brooklyn may not be the borough that birthed Hip Hop, but it is the borough that perfected Hip Hop. Hip Hop is not very vegan - regardless, BV brings you the weekly Hip Hop News Round Up courtesy of Wes of the not in any way Hip Hop related NYC band the Undisputed Heavyweights.

---

Gnarls Barkley ruled Lollapalooza - At least according to Entertainment Weekly. Click here for a video (via Stereogum).

Outkast's forthcoming album/soundtrack 'Idlewild' to be released December 6th. First single is "Idlewild Blue" for which the video already has appeared on major channels and YouTube (since removed). Potential second single "Hollywood Divorce", not about the group's alleged breakup, featuring Snoop Dogg and Lil' Wayne - leaked. Get it at palms out sounds.

Southern Rap Legend Scarface, formerly of Geto Boys, announces that after 20 years he will no longer release any more solo albums. In addition to guest spots, he will now focus more on production (via SOHH). We shall see about that. Those rappers and their retirements. *cough*Jay-Z*cough*

Mos Def surprises everyone by announcing the imminent release of an album "Tru3 Magic" on Geffen Records (September 26th) (via Nahright). MP3 of "Boogie Man" to be found here. It better be closer to his brilliant debut "Black On Both Sides" than to his sophomore ehhh "The New Danger". Or else!

DJ Premier, Hip Hop legend and creator of the definite gritty New York City sound, produces half of Christina Aguilera's new album "Back To Basics" including the uncreatively titled, but excellent "Still Dirrty". Download it here.

Killer Mike stands up and raps with substance in the tradition of Ice Cube in the early 1990's (when he still was the best rapper in the world). On "That's Right", he speaks on some matters of social relevance including role models, the Bush family, racism, the responsibilities of successful African Americans to their community, and more. Download it at 5151. (off his latest mixtape "I Pledge Allegiance")

The Roots debut new short video clips for "Don't Feel Right" (here), "All in the Music" (here) and "Here I Come" (here) - all from their new album Game Theory. (via TheRapUp)

And finally in the WTF category - Jackass's very own Steve-O nearly loses his life by proclaiming he is the new Ol' Dirty Bastard and proceeding to pull out Lil' Steve-O while on-stage with the entire Wu-Tang Clan during an Ol' Dirty Bastard Tribute, and in the presence of ODB's mother. Partial video at AllHipHop.

Is this the final nail in the BV coffin?

Posted by Hugo | August 9, 2006 7:05 PM

I'd like to see the final nail in Hugo's coffin.

Posted by Anonymous | August 9, 2006 7:32 PM

Final nail? I'm just getting started. I hereby present my list of grievances:

Number One: We demand the immediate release of a list of favorite albums of 2005 and/or the first 7/12ths of 2006, made available to community scrutiny and malice from which we can base future opinion of This Website and its affiliates.

Number Two, Article I: We demand more coverage of our favorite bands.

Number Two, Article II: We demand less coverage of bands we do not approve of.

Number Three: We demand more commentary using that flourescent green line of yours.

That is all.

BV just bit the shark...

I have a nine-inch nail for da shorties.

is indie rock more vegan than hip hop?

Posted by danny | August 9, 2006 9:49 PM

I believe the phrase is "jumping the shark". Although, biting a shark might be just as damaging to a career. And a little hip-hop won't kill you all.

Posted by the fonz | August 9, 2006 10:05 PM

Don't worry, this post mentions the Roots, so it's whitey-approved.

Posted by Anonymous | August 9, 2006 10:27 PM

WTF! how is this jumping the shark??? It's about time hip hop landed on the Vegan.

Posted by AngryCitizen | August 9, 2006 10:38 PM

EW knows as much about music as i do

wow, "there goes the neighborhood"...
Jumping the shark?
Someone caught white people being racist
when no one was looking...

Posted by wow | August 10, 2006 10:48 AM

those comments were not racist, they were about the music...but thanks for throwing the race card into this al sharpton...

Posted by johnniecochranlives | August 10, 2006 10:57 AM

yeah, i found it racist also. you racist.

Posted by danny | August 10, 2006 2:56 PM

i found the comment about the Roots being "whitey-approved" to be racist against people not of color.

Posted by beastieboy | August 10, 2006 3:11 PM

Hey, my "There goes the neighborhood comment" was meant jokingly. I suppose you, wow, still don't find it funny now that you know how I meant it. I guess it's a white thing, you wouldn't understand.

Am I slow, BV? Was that a diss or support of Hip Hop Karaoke?

Posted by HHK | August 12, 2006 2:23 PM

support.

Posted by brooklynvegan | August 12, 2006 2:58 PM

it doesn't take a racist to know that hiphop has become a caricature of its former self. you suggested it yourself, bv. if brooklyn did indeed perfect hiphop, then what exactly did atlanta, st. louis, and the g-unit do for it?

Posted by e | August 21, 2006 3:06 PM

"Brooklyn may not be the borough that birthed Hip Hop, but it is the borough that perfected Hip Hop. Hip Hop is not very vegan - regardless, BV brings you the weekly Hip Hop News Round Up courtesy of Wes of the not in any way Hip Hop related NYC band the Undisputed Heavyweights."

Wes wrote that.

to answer E:

In my humble opinion Atlanta contributed to a large extent to change in hip hop (for better and worse) and produced a bunch of quality artists. Some really shitty ones as well. All St. Louis really contributed is Nelly. G-Unit contributed a lot of crappy music mostly, and a new wave of gangsterism. Also of course one of the biggest image operations in pop music in general. Some decent stuff too I begrudgingly say. Maybe when they release MOP's album they will do better.
