Sonic Youth and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs co-headlined McCarren Park Pool in Brooklyn two nights in a row this weekend (Friday and Saturday - Aug 11-12, 2006). I was at the Saturday show. Both bands sounded great, but the weather was even better. Not only didn't I bring a camera, I stood & sat near the back for the whole show. The four pics in this post are all stolen from people's Flickr who I'll credit in just a few minutes (I accidentally deleted where I got them from, but I wanted to get this post up - SORRY).

does anyone have a SY setlist?

Posted by Anonymous | August 14, 2006 1:32 PM

deerhoof on sunday was one of the worst bands i have ever seen. anyone agree?

Posted by joe | August 14, 2006 1:39 PM

agreed!

yea was not into them. i wasn't fully paying attention but i thought i heard a weezer melody or maybe a weezer cover in their set?

seeing mark ibold with sonic youth was amazing. as much as i like jim o'roark's production work with sy, he has about 3% of ibold's on-stage charisma.

I don't have the SY setlist but on Saturday they leaned heavily on the new album. They played 100% off Dirty, started with Teenage Riot, the encore was Shaking Hell off Confusion is Sex. I'm blanking on any other of the older songs they played. It was a good set if you like the new album and I do.

The other older song SY played on Saturday was "Eric's Trip."

loved the show friday, sonic youth was wild and just as we were saying "who would want to follow that", the yyys pulled off an awesome theatrical set. did they suffer without the cover of darkness on saturday? cause it was quite a glittery lightshow.

YYY's new album is very boring.

Just wondering... how was Awesome Color on Saturday??

i see why many people are disappointed with this new YYY's album (and underwhelmed with their latest performance @ McCarren Pool). it is very different from their debut, less frantic and loud. but it's also good to see band do more than one thing musically. i think yyy's will be around a while. The show on sat. just really proved that yyy's are young because sonic youth made them look like kids. i mean sonic youth really showed what experienced musicians can do.

who said they were underwhelmed with their performance? they were great, on friday at least.

I disagree, I thought Deerhoof was amazing on Sunday.

I have this, but it is not in the correct order and probably incomplete:

Sonic Youth - Teenage Riot, Reena, Incinerate, 100%, Jams Run Free, Do You Believe in Rapture?,
Eric’s Trip, Turquoise Boy, Rats, Pink Steam
E: Shaking Hell

I'm starting to feel like a spokesperson for the Saturday show. Um, Al bo Bal: Karen gave a shout out to her long-time designer Christian Joy for the dress (and for the fact that Christian was getting married on Sunday.) Gimme T: Was not that familiar with Awesome Color but was kind of disappointed. I wasn't really into their singer's vocals, but thought the songs improved when the bassist took over singing duties. For my money, Blood on the Wall does a far superior job of bare-bones rock. Although I met the AC dudes at a bar later that evening and they were really nice. SO forget what I just wrote. They were great!

bang bang

Sorry, ain't got no Saturday setlist.

Thanks for the Awesome Color info, will.

Have to say this is one of the best concert venues going. With the capacity of 5000, it blows the Hammerstein out of the water (pun intended). Other than the lack of places to sit (people make due), the sound is good enough, better than under the balcony at your favotite nyc indoor venue. Way more space and sightlines all favorable. I went both nights and living close by and being over 35 I must admit I love the 10pm curfew. Each band put out two great sets, in exellent form. SY's Saturday set was better and more intense with the lightshow. YYY's did a great job both nights, I like the new album,it was well done, much better than Bowery show earlier in the year when these songs were still new to the band. Phenomana and Cheated Hearts are an all out rock show worthy of a 'The Who' stage show (and will be around for years to come), on Friday you got The Sweets from the new album and an electric Maps, the acoustic Maps on Saturday wasn't as crisp. Saturday we got Mystery Girl and Bang, Friday it was Art Star and Black Toungue.
The new album is dfeinitely an evolution of their sound, it's good and the mix between old and new in the show is fine....
Keep the shows coming! See you at Neko Case.
