YouTube talking to record labels on music videos

"What we really want to do is in six to 12 months, maybe 18 months, to have every music video ever created up on YouTube," co-founder Steve Chen told Reuters. "We're trying to bring in as much of this content as we can on to the site." [YouTube]

Jesus. Don't they already?

Posted by Erik | August 16, 2006 10:43 AM

Yeah, as it is, I can find pretty much any video I'm interested in seeing.

Labels are trying to sell videos on iTunes, so if they'd let them go on YouTube for free, they'd surely demand a big price tag licensing fee. Even though it'd be smarter for them to give them away for free since it's not like fans can see them on TV anymore anyway and they are promotional tools first and foremost.

how long before youtube, myspace and google merge to become skynet?

anything that gets Sir Mix A Lot's 'Put Em on the Glass' on Youtube, so I can relive my pre-teen local access music video station past.

Jeez, I'm surprised that they've only been sued by the owner of the Reginald Denny beating video. Guess they got some lawsuit-repellent or something.

People shouldn't have to pay to see music videos, because like Wes said, they are generally created as promotional tools.

"People shouldn't have to pay to see music videos..."

Says who? Whoever owns the copyright to a music video gets to choose what to do with the video. When did music and music videos become a public good (I mean 'public good' as defined by economists, like police protection, for example)? Man, if people are gonna start claiming they're entitled to all sorts of shit, I'll claim that I should get to make out with certain girlfriends, sisters and daughters.

Music videos main pusher man (MTV) has moved into the more profitable market of "reality" tv. So where do people go for their music videos? FUSE? nah. iTunes? I think not. Youtube. yep. Youtube has some crazy-ass payola-type opportunities here.

Music videos are an art form, but ask youself this... what is the intent behind making them?

Posted by GIMME TINNITUS | August 16, 2006 5:21 PM

"Music videos are an art form, but ask youself this... what is the intent behind making them?"

Just because the copyright holders allow cable networks and maybe public access TV programs to broadcast their music videos without charge doesn't mean that the music videos become free for everyone in perpetuity, legally or morally. Have you forgotten that record labels give out (or at least used to) promo records labeled "FOR PROMOTIONAL USE ONLY — NOT FOR RESALE"? Just because you can find such promo records for sale in indie record stores doesn't make their resale legal or moral.

So, GIMME TINNITUS, how 'bout you post a link to a picture of your girlfriend/sister/daughter?

music videos are COMMERCIALS! no video, little album sales. rarely seen video, little album sales. they should be oh, so happy, that the young music buying kids want to sit down and watch product/talent promotions. should i have to pay to watch a Pizza Hut commercial?

what is up with this site? and and the the double double postings postings

Posted by it's in their best interest | August 17, 2006 10:29 AM

Hey, 'it's in their best interest', no shit. But if a particular music video is appealing enough that some people are willing to purchase or rent a copy of it, the copyright holder has the legal and moral right to charge for it, even if said copyright holder has made said music video available for free via TV broadcast in the past.

I'm not claiming that I don't watch copyrighted material on YouTube myself. I'm saying that you guys who try to justify copyright infringement on moral or intellectual grounds are full of shit.

So, 'it's in their best interest', do you have any girlfriends/sisters/daughters who are blonde? I like 'em blonde.

I don't understand the big deal with youtube is. The quality of the videos are so-so and it takes forfriggingever for the damn thing to load all the way. Plus you get every offensive moron on the internet commenting on the videos. They should monitor the comments like the do here

Woah... pfffft.

You lost me.

True, 97% of music videos are promotional in nature. There's a balance between the control of the copyright holders interest in preventing infringement and the copyright holders interst in promotion. Youtube provides pretty fuzzy quality and caps the length of clips. This (most likely will) leads the consumer of music and/or video to search out better quality (and hopefully legal) copies of the work.

Even so, some copyright holder police the shit out of their works... to quote myself:

"I'm surprised that they've only been sued by the owner of the Reginald Denny beating video."

Oh and sorry, no link to my girlfriend/sister/daughter.

GT, I don't disagree with anything you wrote in your last substantial comment, but I want to point out something:

"There's a balance between the copyright holders interest in preventing infringement and the copyright holders interest in promotion."

It's the copyright holder, and no one else, who has the legal and moral authority to decide how to strike that balance.
