Best album of the year-so-far - the results (2006)

This is completely unscientific. About 1/3 of the entries for "best album of the year-so-far" came from people entering to win tickets to Jamie Lidell at Irving Plaza tonight. Another third came from those seeking a copy of Jenny Lewis on DVD, and the final third were semi-random people asked directly, via email, by me last night.
And the people's choice award for best album goes to....
1st place: TV on the Radio - Return To Cookie Mountain
2nd place: M Ward - Post War
3rd place (a tie): Cat Power - The Greatest & The Rapture - Pieces of People We Love
Amazingly, 106 different albums were named. Destroyer, Liars, Sunset Rubdown, Beirut, and Girl Talk tied for fourth.

I have a story for you to print about an "indie rock"
record store in Williamsburg Brooklyn. Sound Fix
Records. Not sure if your familiar with them. Well,
the owner called me and told me he wanted to hire me
as a consultant to help grow his website where he
sells CD's. I have been a customer there for years so
I trusted him and gave him a 1 hour consultation and
gave him an entire marketing plan to help his
business. I told him my fees and the cost and he said
he definately wanted to move forward and the next step
was a contract. He then made me come in for a 2nd
free consultation to meet with his web designer, a
"super genius" apple guy. He then made me repeat
everything to his designer and told me to make the
contract to have to him by Monday. He would just tell
me the exact amount of his spending. Anyway, come
Monday and I give him a call. He tells me he has
"hired" someone else and he had the right to interview
me. First of all, I gave him 2 free hours of my time
(I have 8 years professional internet marketing
experience) and an entire marketing plan under the
pretense that he commited to hire me. This man is a
crook. I would really like the community to know that
so they don't support such a crooked man. Please
email me with any questions. I would much appreciate
it if you can print this on Brooklyn Vegan. Don't go
to Sound Fix Records in Williamsburg!!!!!

Dude, that sucks for you. What a jerk that guy is! I won't be getting any of these albums from sound fix records now. thanks for the heads up. good luck with everything

At least Walmart won't steal money out of your pocket!!!! Be careful of the grey haired man at Sound Fix!!!!
Posted by scottmichael | September 26, 2006 2:09 PM
Is that the guy with the grey hair? I think he tried to hit on me one time. Kinda creepy! I just wanted to go get the LCD Soundsystem record for my boyfriend (who's no longer my boyfriend anyway) so I asked him if he had it. He went off on this long winded rant about how revolutionary they were, how cool they look, blah, blah, blah. I think he kept talking so that he could keep looking down my shirt. I totally caught him peeking. He had this deranged, wolf-like stare which reminded me of a Duran Duran song that I can't think of now. hahaha
Long story made short, he skeeves me out.
Oh yea, TV on the Radio... not crazy about thier album. Cat power's is much better in my opinion
Posted by Hope | September 26, 2006 2:12 PM
sorry dear,
walmart is the worst fucking company in our country.
they steal from millions of people daily, with their mark downs that make it impossible for any one to compete...they won't even sell certain artists who refuse to 'edit' the content of their music. honestly...freedom of speech much? plus, you know how many local record stores, good honest people who know their music, have gone under because of places like this?!!! plus they build on sacred lands in mexico...and on environmental reserves...seriously. i understand you are upset, but come on!
Posted by s | September 26, 2006 2:14 PM
I voted for Cookie Mountain...did i win?

I think people are forgetting that The Life Pursuit was released in early 2006.

yellow house wuz robbed
the rapture and m. ward albums are garbage
Posted by Anonymous | September 26, 2006 2:21 PM
Right, Walmart is a big corporate chain and that's why we love independent music stores. I had a bad experience at Sound Fix too...The guy with the grey hair (the creepy one) kept coming up to me and pushing me to buy all these CD's I've never heard of. I went home and they all were horrible. He was so in my face and pushy I felt like I was in a used car dealership. I never went back to Sound Fix Records again...I'd rather buy my Cd's on Insound. Much better...If I want to go to a store I'll just go to Other Music where they have good taste
Posted by scottmichael | September 26, 2006 2:23 PM
I agree... Yellow House should be up there... YOU FREAKS WHAT DID YOU DO!?!?!? WE CAN NEVER TURN BACCCCCK!!!!!!!!
*deep sting hurt and cries*
Who else is seeing GB @ Bowery tonight?
Me.

Rapture... disco punk... pieces of people...best sex music ever! Me and my boyfriend went at it for hours (good thing the CD was on repeat!). There's just something about that bassline that got me hot and bothered. I came for 10 minutes, it was so hot! So that's why I thought it was the best album of the year. But then again, you'd have to be in bed with me to really understand it. Dont get any crazy ideas now, you have no idea where on Bedford I live, perves!
Sushi gurl
PS the guys at sound fix are really lame. Had a similar story there. One of the guys there pretty much followed me around the store hoping that I would have a question for him, so that he could talk to me. the way that I was being watched I felt like a black man in a korean grocery... but the last time I checked I'm a white girl from Ohio. leave me alone!! My boyfriend thought it was really hilarious how these old geeky guys were trying to hit on me. maybe it was the gray haired wolf man you guys were talking about too. wouldn't it be funny if it was him. all women need to get a restraining order from these dudes, even the young cute ones there.
PPS walmart is the best store ever. I have a choice in my shopping... walmart in Long Island, or Walmart Upstate? awesome
Posted by sushi gurl | September 26, 2006 2:52 PM
How could the Rapture album even be close to contention. I seriously thought about hurtling this cd out of the window of my car after hearing the first few songs (and more specifically, that song where the chorus sings about a Ford Mustang--is that going to end up in a commerical?) Horrible.

1. Soundfix has a poor selection. They're like an indie Sam Goody's.
2. Wal-mart is no worse than any other company out there. just more successful.
3. Sunset Rubdown's debut = album of the year as of now (and, yes, they were both good shows)
Posted by John | September 26, 2006 2:54 PM
man. sushi gurl. she must be really annoying at a bar.
Posted by nick | September 26, 2006 2:57 PM
I learned a long time ago, never buy a cd from a grey haired hipster. it's worth it to pay a few extra bucks at Virgin Megastore, then to have to worry about some Grey Haired indie wanna be peeping your girlfriend when you're paying the bill. Boycott this store!

BAN SOUND FIX IN WILLIAMSBURG
Posted by scottmichael | September 26, 2006 3:02 PM
The Greatest, while a really nice record, isn't even close to Chan's best record, nor one of the best albums of the year.
my vote was for M. Ward & Midlake, but TVoTR isn't far behind.
Posted by solace | September 26, 2006 3:03 PM
and yeah, srsly, The Rapture?
this new record is weaker than Echoes even, and even that album was pretty damn hit or miss. don't even think it was in my top 25 for '03
Posted by solace | September 26, 2006 3:05 PM
Do you think the Grey Wolfman hits on Catpower on the street outside the Irving Plaza dressing room? Yes or no? Please respond..
Posted by scottmichael | September 26, 2006 3:06 PM
I love Sound Fix and will continue to buy cds from them, just as I buy cds from earwax and kim's and other music. I just can't bring myself to care about someone's business life that isn't mine or anyone I know. Good luck with the career though.
Oh, and Hope, sorry about the break up.
Posted by will | September 26, 2006 3:16 PM
Man, at least Soundfix has nice free shows. I don't shop there very often, but I would go there before buying from Virgin anytime.
Anyway, I second what Solace said about the Rapture, I am seriously thinking of selling that piece of shit back, maybe I'll go to SoundFix!
Posted by nolte | September 26, 2006 3:19 PM
I shop at Sound Fix all the time, and the owner has always been totally nice and helpful to me. The new music selection's far superior to anything else in the neighborhood, and they put on free instores in the coffee shop out back. What are you all shills for WalMart now?
Posted by wtf? | September 26, 2006 3:24 PM
annoying at a bar, probably...
annoying in bed, if you mind getting your c*ck ridden for hours and to come all over my face and breasts, just to have it happen all over again... then yes, I'm seriously annoying in bed too!

My guess is the grey haired man was probably a Duran Duran roadie back in the day and is now tormented by the high probability of a Justin Timberlake/Duran Duran collaboration.
Posted by Jonathan | September 26, 2006 3:48 PM
Those Oakley Hall albums are really good. IMo Gypsum Strings is better than Second Guessing but both are great.
Man Man - 6 Demon Bag is also a great album.
I also really like the Wooden Wand "Second Attention" and the Howlin' Rain album.
Posted by danfun | September 26, 2006 4:01 PM
So you are mad because you made a bad business decision by not signing a contract up front. Not saying the guy is right by any stretch of the imgination, but you should cover yourself first.
Posted by Anonymous | September 26, 2006 4:14 PM
Well if you had any credibility you wouldn't want to buy CD's from someone who has no respect for the indie community. I think this string has displayed that. And don't think the free shows aren't manipulating you to get in the door to buy something. Go in there 2 times and don't buy something and see how nice they are you.
Posted by scottmichael | September 26, 2006 4:15 PM
i'm voting for:
The Sleepy Jackson
Saturna
The Blakes
Posted by Capt Rock | September 26, 2006 4:17 PM
the instore concerts are a nice touch. but saying that they have the best selection in williamsburg is a bit misleading, if technically true.
Posted by John | September 26, 2006 4:20 PM
Sound Fix raped my mother and killed my brother. He then convinced me to buy the new Akron/Family album.
Posted by Anonymous | September 26, 2006 4:22 PM
haha he said you wouldn't shop at soundfix if you had any credability....credability as what? a consumer? a blog commenter?
and sushi gurl, how can you make a post talking about "coming all over your face and breasts" but censor the word "cock" ?? kinda backwards
Posted by nick | September 26, 2006 4:32 PM
the Shogun Kunitoki disc is hands down the best CD of 2006 so far. haven't gotten the awesome color full length yet, and i have no excuse for that other than being lazy - but I am thinkin' it's probably up there on the list, too.
Posted by matthewaaron | September 26, 2006 4:39 PM
i copied the first comment - the one about sound fix - and sent it to them through their website. i asked them if the author's account was true, because if it was it made me reluctant to shop there. i told them a reply would be appreciated.
then i copied the 14th and 30th comments - the ones from sushi gurl - and sent them to my girlfriend. i told her i was buying that rapture album on the way home.
ok so that second one was a lie. we prefer to do it with the music off and make our own.

Five bucks says that sushi girl is in fact the grey-haired creepy man in Sound Fix.

Posted by bret | September 26, 2006 4:48 PM
i've been shopping at soundfix for a while and i find them to be nothing but helpful and friendly. they've never pressured me to buy an album i haven't wanted. you can't honestly tell me that you prefer earwax down the road, do you? when it comes to asshole clerks and bad selection, that place takes the cake.
Posted by Anonymous | September 26, 2006 4:48 PM
Character assassination is pretty lame. Do your business. Keep it to yourself. If you have 8 years experience, then you have a network of fellow professionals. Tell them this story and advise them not to work with the guy. Public calling out like this is inappropriate and borders on slander.
After all, you have named this guys business without revealing yours. Not really fair, even if your story is true.

As for Sound Fix... that place does kind of suck, grey-haired conman/sexual predator aside. That record store on North 6th is better... although I can't remember it's name right now.

Yeah, pretty weak dude. So with 8 years experience, you responded to a potential client who wanted some consulting help (which basically means "Tell me some ideas you have about my business") by meeting him for two hours and telling him your ideas? Without a contract? And then, as another posted noted, spewing venom on a public message board?
Booo!

life pursuit is my favorite album of the year so far, but i have been much more into the tvotr record then i thought i'd be. is there any way you can post all of the mentions, bv? i know its hard, but i actually think this is an interesting poll!! thanks.
p.s. that sucks about sound fix. i still miss that store since moving from williamsburg. hmm.

The Rapture should have gone to a major label! Then maybe.... i would have voted for them! Independent labels are so 2005!
Posted by ycnay to the iznay | September 26, 2006 6:00 PM
Dude, 8 years of professional experience should have taught you a little better. It sounds like you got a boner about the opportunity and blew your load before anything was in writing. Your portfolio of work should have been enough to get some sort of written agreement before you gave his whole fucking business a makeover. You screwed the pooch on this one. The grey haired Soundfix guy is guilty only of preying on the naive. He was also seen near Jonbenet's house on the day she was murdered.
If the Strokes album was released by a band with Wolf in its name, it would be getting far more props. It just ain't cool to like the album, but the shit has some seriously great songs on it. I really do not get TV on the Radio. I'm trying, but they are headed into the same section of my record collection as Broken Social Scene.

Not all the dudes who work at Sound Fix are creepy, and not all the people who work there are dudes. I have had some negative experiences there, but definitely more positive. If you don't want to shop there, it's your call. But as for the first fellow who posted? It's hard for me to believe that in eight years of marketing experience, you've never had someone ask you to make and explain a proposal, respond positively to it, and then reject it. I have worked in the music industry for several years, and I have to tell you - your post is one of the worst instances of unprofessional behavior I have witnessed. Because you were misled by a potential client who changed his mind (even if he was a jerk about it, that's his prerogative if you didn't have a signed agreement), you are now calling for a boycott? Wow, that's incredibly petty, and your attempts at getting pity from BV readers who don't know that what happened to you isn't unusual is lame. It also shows terrible judgement - don't you think the owner of Sound Fix has connections to record labels who might want to hire you someday? Don't you think he'll realize it was you that posted this?
Posted by casual observer | September 26, 2006 6:30 PM
I went to Soundfix and they FRAMED ME FOR MURDER! My album of the year (so far) is J Dilla Donuts.
Posted by klondike | September 26, 2006 6:39 PM
Okay we are getting way ahead of ourselves here. The Rapture is on the list because white boys need their funk or something.
I honestly can't allow myself to like them when the singer luke's voice is so much like robert smith.
The best song on Cat Power's record is 'Love & Communication' but the album as a whole can't compete here.
TVOTR is tryuly amazing. I saw them when they where starting out and it was embarrasingly bad but now, fucking 4.A.D.!
As far as the Sound Fix thing, who would solicit a place with that wack name? embarrasing.
do yourselves a favor and stick to Kim's and Other Music where people actually know about music and don't need teenmarketing gurus.
Posted by Gaz | September 26, 2006 6:46 PM
I haven't been in love with many albums this year. The two that I've enjoyed the most have been TVOTR and The Church's Uninvited Like The Clouds. The latter is an unexpected delight, the former an album I knew would be great. Oh, and Takagi Masakatsu's Journal For People. A really nice minimal electronic album. I've enjoyed that quite a bit.
Posted by Glenn | September 26, 2006 6:47 PM
this is Brooklyn Vegan, so it kinda goes without saying.. though the title of this post should read, 'best Indie-rock album of the year so far.' (or Indie-rock-scene-affiliated). Surely there are other genres of music out there we appreciate, though do not adore quite as much as the good ol' indie rock, that weren't voted on in this poll..
throwing in my 2 cents, however, I'm not saying its the best album of 06', but Belle and Sebastian's The Life Pursuit might be the most under-rated and under-appreciated.

the best album this year is one probably none of you have heard. the diableros. thediableros.tv
no lie.
Posted by mister | September 26, 2006 7:23 PM
I have to agree with casual observer one. If you have that much experience in the internet marketing industry, then you would know that meeting with potential clients a) may take 2 hours of your time and b) potential client may, in the end, decide to reject your proposal.
I have found no record store to be perfect. Sound Fix can be good and it can be bad. I go there to buy music, not for a social experience. Plus, I would much rather support a neighborhood business than corporate conglomerate.
I think the blog post shows your unprofessionalism, and, most likely, indicates why you were not hired.
What is the name of your eight year internet marketing business anyway?
You should have the courage to post it if you're going to slander locally owned businesses.
Oh yes, and best album of the year...
J Dilla, Donuts

P.S. Morrissey hates us all because no one mentioned his latest album.

There's no backlash from Tapes N' Tapes because no one really cared about them in the first place. Every track on the album is ripped off another indie band, yet because they obviously realize this themselves, it makes it boring rather than offensive.

How the hell could anyone say the new Liars record is even close to being tops of 2006? It's mostly feedback drivel with a couple of 'songs' thrown in for good measure.
Mew's album is tops. Also, the new Brother Kite album is AMAZING!
Posted by Joseph | September 27, 2006 4:02 AM
is anyone else puzzled about why all (ok: nearly all) the critics who are jizzing over Cookie Mountain were really sniffy about (the far superior imo) Desperate Youth...?
and this isn't really a boo-hoo story to rival the Sound Fix debacle, but Cat Power and M. Ward are playing one show each on their next visits to my town (London) - ON THE SAME NIGHT! aaaggghhh!
Posted by whatlofi | September 27, 2006 4:45 AM
Noone cares about your crap career anyway.
Black Angels - Passover
Camera Obscura - Let's Get Out of This Country
The Knife - Silent Shout
Posted by catcat | September 27, 2006 8:55 AM
Man Man - Six Demon Bag might have to be my pick, although Love and Other Planets (Adem) continues to be a fine listen as well.
BTW... aren't Walmart and Target the same store... except you dorks with the horned rimmed glasses complain less at one location than the other? Who still goes to a record store anymore?
dirty scenesters.

I guess grizzly bear isn't going to be at the top of any critics lists this year. Oh well, it's at the top of mine.
Before that came out my album of the year was the futureheads news and tributes which has yet to get a single mention from anyone here thus far out of like 100+ comments. I guess everyone is all like "it's not as good as there last one" and "who cares about them anymore."
TVOTR is overrated... I feel like it's the front runner for P-fork's album of the year.
Also, does anyone remember danielson's ships? That would be at the top of my list too. fo shizzel.

I have a stomach ache so i went to the bathroom and pooped something greenish. It was disgusting. I'd rather listen to that than Tapes 'n Tapes, and I'm serious about the green poo... i need to get that checked out.
Is it just me or do a lot of the aforementioned albums drag on with self-indulgent monotonous songs? (It totally could be me.)
I'm a big fan of the Guillemots record.
Sushi girl - make sure your man wears a condom. Safe sex is the only sex.
I have to poo again.
Out.

I would second the MEW comment, great album.
The last time I sent to Sound Fix, sushi gurl came all over my face. S/he was really freaky!
Posted by richard | September 27, 2006 9:43 AM
Shit, how can I forget the Black Angels' Passover record????? Criminally overlooked.
TVOTR may be the media/hipster darlings right now, but I can spout off 5 records that are better.
And Tapes n' Tapes?? Garbage. Absolute garbage. I wonder what people are thinking when they hear that: "Oh, do I look cool listening to Tapes n' Tapes?"
No. No, you don't.
Posted by Joseph | September 27, 2006 10:13 AM
Girl Talk tied for fourth??
I thought all those folks who fell for the hype would have wised up by now.

Hmm how about we retitle this list:
"Top 20 #1 Albums Of The Year"
With 20 spots and only 20 number 1's surely we could all get along... even that guy who still likes Tapes'n'tapes.
Jason
P.S. After seeing Grizzly Bear last night I am freaking ecstatic at the prospect of more recordings from these guys.... they played a new song and I taped the whole gig.... :D MP3's to come.

i commented previously on my love of the belle and sebastian record; but have to comment again to once again to defend sound fix. i agree with the posts of how unprofessional it was to bitch about not getting a job. losing a pitch is way unsketchier than a lot of the shit that goes on in the professional world.
and just to throw my 2 cents in, i find sound fix far less pretentious than any other indie retailer in nyc. they're selection is usually great and the staff's almost always been friendly to me, especially compared to most indie store clerks. so yea, that's all!

Love these . . .
Figurines - Skeleton;
Danielson - Ships;
Islands - Return to the Sea

surprised no one has mentioned Shearwater's Palo Santo as one of the best. Slept on record

To the SoundFix guy: Join the club with the rest of us who aced the job interviews and were told we 'basically' have the job but they just needed to follow protocol and interview other candidates so you go out and celebrate and buy new work clothes only to not hear from them for a week so you call them and they tell you they gave the job to someone else. Boo hoo.
Posted by Joseph | September 27, 2006 12:02 PM
To comment on the posts in regard to the company name of the aforementioned person involved in the sound fix debacle. How do you know Sound fix wasn't their first personal client other than working for other companies for the 8 years? It's amazing how people in the indie scene with all this cred and integrity don't care about fellow music fans getting preyed on by an indie rock merchant. Gos to show indie rockers are no better than hippies or Goth kids...

Right but did you put together an entire marketing plan for the interview or just throw a suit on? Also, when you went on the interview you went under the pretense it was an interview. You were not told up front you were to be hired as a consultant.
Posted by scottmichael | September 27, 2006 12:08 PM
This would make a good case on the judge judy or something.
And even then though, you would still lose, as it was your fault you never made it clear that you expected to be paid a consultation fee, regardless of whether or not he was going to hire you. shit happens...deal with it.

Yeah Jason, Grizzly Bear was amazing last night, one of the top shows of the year for me. I wonder why they don't get more love from bloggers...I guess it's better this way tho....

Off topic anonymous character assasination is NOT cool. Too bad BV doesn't delete scottmichaels' multiple posts which he so rudely posted on many different threads, all having nothing to do with the subject at hand. What if everyone used BV to rant against whoever supposedly did them wrong?
Posted by scottmichaelssucks | September 27, 2006 12:24 PM
sushi gurl. call me. please.
Posted by raul camacho | September 27, 2006 12:30 PM
yes, let's now hear from scottmichael's ex-girl/boy friends on his finer points...and be sure to use his real name and tell us exactly where he works!
Posted by fuckuscottmichael | September 27, 2006 1:08 PM
the defensive tone aside, when you get a call that you are to be hired to consult for a "friend"/customer, you extend a little trust that people are good. Everyone is right Scott Michael is wrong. Most people are not good. And every lesson learned turns us all closer to the dark side. Don't forget to have your friends sign contracts when you lend them your copy of the awsome Rapture CD.
Posted by scottmichael | September 27, 2006 2:12 PM
I like bashing on employers like the next socialist, but I really don't see how the consultant got screwed. The consultant crafted the marketing plan as a promotional tool. The promotion did not work. I give away services sometimes to get more business. Sometimes it works, sometimes is does not. Unless there was a clear understanding that the employer would employ the consultant, which normally (but not always) requires discussion and agreement about fees and product deliverables, I see no moral and legal obligation by the employer to hire you. He was tasting the waters and decided not to swim. If you didn't create your marketing plan you would have never gotten in the door in the first place to make your pitch.
Just another point of view.

Hey! Lay off the grey-haired hipsters...I'm a grey-haired hipster but I don't run a record store...
I love the Camera Obscura record, though...and Band of Horses ...
record of the year might be Elvis Perkins--once it's out

soundfix is the worst. go to eat records and support casey and not the slimey mr. hat loving james dude. also. yellow house and drumz not dead.
Posted by assface | September 27, 2006 4:02 PM
hell yea, i love eat records for both their selection of vinyl, and for the employees. casey's the man, and their food's great... for cd shopping, i still dig on the sound fix. but really, i wish there were stores like this in the caroll gardens/boerum hill/park slope area.

Scoot Michael work real hard. Scott Michael get no love. Grey haired wolfman intitiated relationship by saying he was hiring Scott Michael and loved everything he said and to draw up contract with cost and deliverables. Wolfman make Michael meet the pretentious "super genius" and Wolfman made Michael repeat everything he liked so Genius can steal his ideas. Hipsters don't understand Michael. Michael is sad that hipsters don't get it until hipsters daddys stop paying their Eat records store credit card bill

TVOTR , the album is great , love the lyrics/coposition - the whole nine . But it gets pretty boring after a few spins .
My vote goes to
Band of HOrses - Everything all the time ..
"first song " is the most brilliant track i've heard in a while ..

Gee, scottmichael, anonymous character assassination is so very professional and charming. How could he not want to hire you?
I've been visiting Sound Fix ever since they opened, and haven't had a single negative experience there. I don't know who you're talking about when you bring up this "gray-haired wolfman" shit, but the proprietor who is probably in his thirities on has never been anything other than courteous and helpful. Don't make it sound like he's some old lech.
And if you're going to create lots of aliases to abuse a store owner, you might want to remember to use them every time. (See the 12th or so comment down the line, where he pops up as another unhappy customer from Sound Fix but uses the same name). You moron.
