Final Fantasy

Owen Pallett (aka Final Fantasy) took home $20,000 (Canadian I assume) as the winner of the first ever annual Canadian Polaris Music Prize for his album He Poos Clouds. He beat Broken Social Scene, Metric, Wolf Parade, The Deadly Snakes, Cadence Weapon and all the rest.

Eye Weekly asked everyone what they'd do with the money. Owen's response: "I'D PAY OFF MY BOYFRIEND'S STUDENT LOAN AND THEN GIVE THE REST TO BANDS I LIKE -- LIKE HANK COLLECTIVE AND OTHER BLOCKS [RECORDING CLUB] BANDS -- TO MAKE RECORDS."

$20 000 Canadian? Shit, that's like $36.62 US!

It's quite ironic that this panel of judges, who have their collective head up their collective ass, awarded the top prize to an album with the word 'poos' in its title.

Why do people care about awards that are invented just to compete with other awards?

e, just because money seems to be an issue with you, CAD 20,000 is USD 17,889.

I for one... think Apples are yummy.

And monkeys are funny when they act like people.

I also like to be relevant to thread material.

I'm not a big awards kind of guy, but at least the Polaris shed some light onto music that is typically ignored by the mainstream media in Canada. Our verison of the Grammys, the Junos, consistently overlooks good shit in favour of crap like Nickelback and Celine Dion. It's nice to see recognition given to those who deserve it.

Way to go Owen!

All the performers (and by extension all the nominees) were great but Owen really was head and shoulders above the rest. Just based on those two songs he played, I'd say he deserved it.

another one for the mediocrity. bss were robbed. each of them might only be half as talented as owen, but final fantasy is just one person. broken social scene is like an army of half-owens. you tell me who'd win in a straight battle. i say, it's not owen.

owen pallett is amazing.
im glad he got it.
and yeah, broken social scene are amazing, but you ahve to have immense talent to make a beautiful emotional album out of just one person. props to owen for that.
