Grizzly Bear (& Owen) @ Bowery Ballroom, NYC | pics
DOWNLOAD: On a Neck, On a Spit (MP3)
Grizzly Bear headlined Bowery Ballroom in NYC last night (September 26, 2006).
ED IS THE COOLEST

Tuesday nights suck because my radio show is on Sirius from 10-12. Luckily I can tape earlier in the evening though. So after taping my show from 7-9, and then seeing Rodrigo y Gabriela @ SOB's from 9-10:45 (review coming soon), I was able to get to Bowery Ballroom just in time for Grizzly Bear's 11:00 set. I was exhausted at that point, and the massive amounts of equipment the openers left on the Bowery Ballroom floor (not their fault, I know) left the room more crowded and harder to navigate than it needed to be . Eventually I settled in to a spot though, and the beautiful Beach Boys harmonies coming from the stage helped me relax and find my second wind.
OWEN APPEARS

The nerd that I am, I nearly jumped for joy when Ed said that "Owen" (Final Fantasy) was joining them on stage for a song. Polaris Music Prize winner Owen played his violin and looped - no singing - no Maria Carey - just one song and then he was gone as fast he appeared. Coincidentally (I said I was a nerd) I played the Final Fantasy remix of Grizzly Bear's "Don't Ask" on my radio show that was broadcasting simultaneously with the concert.
Partial Sirius Playlist - 09/26/2006
2) Metric - Police and the Private
3) Final Fantasy - This Lamb Sells Condos
4) Grizzly Bear - Don't Ask (Final Fantasy Remix)
5) Xiu Xiu - Clowne Towne

Grizzly Bear broke a bass string right before the last song. After quickly fixing the problem, they closed with On a Neck, On a Spit which the highlight of the show for me. I was hoping for an encore, but we got none. I wouldn't say there was a low point in the show, but someone I talked to wasn't particulary a fan of "Colorado". They played a rockin' new-new song too.
Go see Grizzly Bear, mostly with TV on the Radio.
And download the MP3s from their recent KEXP session.

They were amazing, one of the best shows I've been to this year. My highlight was when they played "Shift". What a great song....
I think they didn't close with Knife, right?

you're a yawn

This band has more talent in one finger nail than than TV on the Radio has in the whole band (at least as far as live shows go - TVotR can make a good record, but they can't perform said-record - which is what separates GrizBear from them...they can play the hell out of those songs live - and yes, Chris Bear is the sickest drummer out there..and he doesn't even use a bass drum!!)

..and he doesn't even use a bass drum!!)
And you don't use an opening parenthesis... :'(
But that's besides the point... I made sure to capture the whole Lullabye on Video to pair up with my bootleg... his drummer on that song is pure bliss... and even gets a bit dancy...
Man I wish I could see them every day... I might drive to philly to see them with TVotR.
So worth a 2 hour drive.

yeah, that drummer played some songs with his hands!

I think the debate over Grizzly Bear and TVotR really needs to be settled on the field, like CYHSY V. the National. 2005 was a good year for blogger feuds, and well, it's about time we had another.
And for the record: I also loathe drummers who rely on a bass drum to hide an obvious lack of skill. A superior drummer is one who is able to acheive his necessary percusive elements with as few drums as possible. Hence, the best drummers in the world are actually tambourine players. It's true. Look it up!

how were the dirty projectors?

"how were the dirty projectors?"
Taped their set as well... very cool... fun to watch. Gona check out their studio releases... the only gripe I had is that the tonal aspect of some of there songs appears to be lost in the live setting... but they were extreemly tight.

grizzly bear tore it up last night. in a major major way. them and dead meadow and tv on the radio are 3 live acts not to be missed.
those that can't see that have cotton in their ears

yeah, grizzly bear was surprisingly great - i hadn't heard them before the show. and true, stars like fleas were a mess! i think they used about 30 inputs on our board - but their music was nice. dirty projectors, though, ugh! that shit was terrible!
in a side note, the guy who was talking about drummers sounds like he has no idea what he's talking about (much less ever picked up a a pair of drum sticks)...though his overall point is kinda valid - grizzly bear's drummer tore it up. we usually use at least 7 channels for drums, so when they handed me their input list i was like, "two mics??"
