John Darnielle: I don’t think there is such a thing as a hipster. I’m not blaming you, because that is the subject; I’m not blaming anybody. I’m just saying that I think it’s a weird name. I feel like a person using the word “hipster” is using it mainly to announce, “I know what a hipster is.” I mean, it’s my own personal shtick, but I’m just getting that out. anybody that likes anything that isn't totally mainstream is a hipster. i suppose there are even j low/jay z hipsters too. i agree with darnielle; it's such a stupid word that's almost devoid of any real meaning at all. so "hipster metal" isn't really an oxymoron though i'd like to agree with you.

If you seriously don't want a stupid term to be used to describe a type of music, don't rant on it, you idiots!!!! More people will learn about it, therefore more people will use the term!!
Just don't call it "hipster-metal" and it will eventually die out. And if anyone uses the term, smack them in the face!

This hipster metal term needs to go away. I can't say I like Wolfmother(sounds like a watered down Deep Purple/Zeppelin to me), but Mastodon is currently the only contemporary band I like(no kidding!). Yet they aren't doing anything revolutionary; metal has been a technical, progressive genre since the 80s.
Indie rock has no such band that I know of. They all sound like rehashes of alternative/college rock bands to me.
