Rumor has it that it's Animal Collective and Ghostface Killah. Strange combo if you ask me.

just because someone goes to nyu doesnt mean there a trust find kid. plenty are here on scholarships or have had to take out huge loans.

i think it's fair....$30k a year for school and one free concert.

Posted by Anonymous | September 6, 2006 6:47 PM

$30k, that's like NYU with a 50% discount

Posted by drop out | September 6, 2006 7:12 PM

You need an NYU ID to get a ticket. Lame.

The Columbia concerts are open to the public. Who's playing there this year?

Posted by Solomon Grundy | September 6, 2006 7:24 PM

The Hold Steady and The Spinto Band played this past Saturday.

I think they have another concert in the spring?

Posted by gwong | September 6, 2006 8:18 PM

Oh whoops. I'd have gone up there for that.

you need an NYU id to get the ticket, not to get in the door...Im sure theres a ton a freshman who have no interest in seeing this band, but picked up tickets

"Why do trust fund kids need a free show?"
Awww, sounds like someone's bitter. What, did even CUNY reject ya?

Posted by Mangrilla | September 7, 2006 12:15 AM

i'll be there. so much resentment on here...

Posted by joe | September 7, 2006 12:37 AM

animal collective and ghostface were confirmed on the ac board by one of the band members

wish i didnt live in california!!!

Posted by Anonymous | September 7, 2006 1:21 AM

Tony Starks in the house?? No shit.

Posted by Bullet Proof wallets | September 7, 2006 2:21 AM

If it really is Ghostface and Animal collective, i think Ghost should open this one up.

Posted by AngryCitizen | September 7, 2006 2:25 AM

Best Columbia show was Fugazi in '91, shortly after Repeater came out (God, I'm getting old...).

Posted by Wallis | September 7, 2006 10:21 AM

"Awww, sounds like someone's bitter. What, did even CUNY reject ya?"

That statement would have made sense if you were backing up a school like Columbia, but NYU? NYU has poor academics compared to the price. I was accepted to NYU, but went elsewhere. I went to an engineering school, not a liberal arts one, so NYU would have been a poor fit.

Posted by Anonymous | September 7, 2006 10:27 AM

Saw Afrika Bambaataa and the Soul Sonic Force at the old Loeb student center sometime back in the mid 80's. I was not an NYU student.

Posted by drewo | September 7, 2006 10:45 AM

oh man im so glad i didnt end up going to nyu. despite their pretty awesome beginning of year concerts.

nyu kids suck so hard.

Posted by lk | September 7, 2006 12:52 PM

Will Mary-Kate and Ashley be at this concert?

Posted by enquiring minds want to know | September 7, 2006 2:12 PM

Columbia's concert was last week.
& NYU kids aren't all bad, yo.

Posted by Emma | September 7, 2006 5:49 PM

When I went to the Shins/Fiery Furnaces free show a couple years ago they were checking IDs

Posted by JF | September 7, 2006 6:39 PM

Man, I just got back from the show.
I know that people hate on NYU kids so much b/c of the university's policies toward downtown real estate but kids like me come here for a good education in an eclectic setting.
we're not all trust fund brats, granted there are a lot of them here but in my 3 years I've managed to meet plenty of stand-up people who I'm proud to call my friends.
And if nothing else, there is a lot of talent spewing out of this school.
Back on topic, the AC show was awesome (little We Tigers in there after crowd shout out) but the sound for Ghostface was terrible (as usual) so I bounced.

"kids like me come here for a good education"

Stop trying to make excuses. You support an institution responsible for closing down many local cultural institutions just to make room for dorms. Plus, the academics at NYU are pretty weak. But if you repeat in a few times, maybe you will start believing it.

Posted by Anonymous | September 8, 2006 12:15 AM

Oh come on, everyone in America supports institutions that are reprehensible. Haven't you bought a coffee from Starbucks or a single piece of clothing from a brand name.. ever? I'm not saying it makes it right, but NYU kids aren't responsible for shutting down those buildings, the institution is. Besides, I'm getting the best education for ME & I'll be paying for it well into my adult life. Rag on it all you want, but there are cool people & crappy people here just like everywhere else.

Posted by Anonymous | September 8, 2006 12:19 AM

Like I said, if you repeat in a few times, maybe you will start believing it.

Seems like it worked like a charm!

Posted by Anonymous | September 8, 2006 12:52 AM

throw ya Clark Wallabee shoes in the air bitches.

Posted by Ironman aka Tony Starks aka Pretty Toney | September 8, 2006 2:30 AM

im going to say it.

animal collective fucking suck live. i love their albums, but live its just pure masturbation. they are punishing the people who pay for their albums and pay for tickets to see them by giving them an hour of crap with 2 recognizable songs thrown in. if they want to be a noise band, fine, but record noise albums. they've decided to record pop albums with songs, so when i go to see them live, i expect songs. but me, like many other people who have supported them over the years, are treated to sonic wankery. fuck those dude. never again. NEVER AGAIN.

and ghostface had a pretty sweet entourage. easily 20 dudes just standing on the stage. i actually saw one make a phone call while up there.

Posted by nick | September 8, 2006 3:17 AM

> everyone in America supports institutions that are reprehensible.

Wow.

> NYU kids aren't responsible for shutting down
those buildings, the institution is.

Double wow.

If you weren't scared for the youth of today, you should be. Is it blatant ignorance or blatant disrespectfulness? Either way, the future is looking grim.

Posted by Anonymous | September 8, 2006 10:20 AM

'Nick' is a fucking idiot. animal collective is one of the best bands i've ever seen live, hands down. go put on your bloc party album and shut the fuck up, you are obviously oblivious to art.

sorry, but "i expect songs"??? maybe urban outfitters will still accept a return on the copy of Feels you bought there

Posted by Anonymous | September 8, 2006 11:43 AM

i knew it was coming! i posted it just so i could get the "A" word thrown at me.

what animal collective does live isn't art. running your voice through a delay pedal isnt art. their albums are infinitely more "artistic" than their sham live show.

please PLEASE try to explain to me the artistic merit of yelling through a delay pedal? its annoyance masquerading as "art"

go to the live show and watch the crowd reaction when they actually play a song start to finish. THAT is art. when they played we tigers last night, kids lost their shit. it was a great moment because it demonstrated how primal and visceral their songs can be, especially in a live setting. but when they were yelling over an electronic hum for 20 minutes, everyone just kind of stood there waiting for another "we tigers" moment. which came at the end when they played purple bottle, and that was another great moment.

good bloc party and urban outfitters references though..you really explained to me why you enjoy animal collective's live show.

and please tell me, if the albums are full of complete, cohesive songs, why should i not expect them live? don't come back at me with insults, i want answers.

Posted by nick | September 8, 2006 1:10 PM

Just for the record, I was not the one who "repeated" myself.
I was not the one who said the institutions are responsible and not the people that support them...
BUT... of all of the institutions I've been enrolled in (Harvard, UC Berkeley, NYU) I feel that the academics at NYU are the best for me and that's why I'm here.
I feel bad whenever NYU makes a shitty real estate deal but I'm not about to pack up and leave.

Hate on NYU all you want but the bottom line is that this school produces unbelievable talent. That's worth a lot to me.

Posted by Harris Novick | September 8, 2006 1:44 PM

FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT!

Posted by Yeah! | September 8, 2006 2:06 PM

NYU produces unbelievable talent because most of the kids who go there already have the means to do anything they want. Having a lot of money and having a lot of talent are two different things.

People with just as much talent come out of state schools, or *gasp*, don't go to college at all.

NYU haters unite!

Posted by Anonymous | September 8, 2006 2:36 PM

i am the only brooklyn vegan reader who is upset by the ridiculous amount of hate on these message boards. you all seem like little babies. people are allowed to have different opinions on things.
mabye i'm the only person here who like bloc party and animal collective a whole lot, but jesus everyone needs to calm down.

Posted by ghandi | September 8, 2006 2:47 PM

nick,

okokok, sorry to hate. we all fall sometimes, and get sucked into internet comments fights. only human, after all.

so maybe when i saw them at webster however many months ago they were alot better than the nyu show. who knows? maybe there's a difference of taste (gasp!) i wasn't at the show (though i tried), so i can't beef...

i will say, that when in the right mindset (drug-induced or not), 20 min electronic hum can be the most beautiful thing ever (see: fennesz, growing, belong etc). i personally think animal collective is on that wavelength, and know exactly what they're doing.

check out some of the pre-sung tongs stuff, it might explain a few things. that or you should smoke more, brethren.

"BUT... of all of the institutions I've been enrolled in (Harvard, UC Berkeley, NYU) I feel that the academics at NYU are the best for me and that's why I'm here."

name-dropping is the crutch of the insecure.

and harvard summer school is for losers, anyway.

and the noun is 'disrepect' not 'disrespectfulness'

Ghandi is right, sometimes the comments here make me sick.
