HR & JESSE MALIN @ CONTINENTAL, NYC | SEPT 14, 2006 (CRED & MORE)

The above photo is HR of Bad Brains playing with Jesse Malin at the Continental's 4th-to-last show ever (Thursday, September 14th, 2006). Jesse came back on Friday the 15th to play with Trigger too. Carla wrote in...
the show Friday was great. it was fucking packed! we were there till close to the end- we missed the last band. It was pretty cool because there's this whole crew of rock bands (Drag Citizen, Honor Among Thieves, Banana Fish Zero, Joker Five Speed, Slunt, the Sex Slaves) that used to play together all the time at the Continental, Rock Candy at Don Hills, Trash, etc. and it was really nice for a lot of them to get together at the Continental one last time. There's still really a cool community of hard rockers in this town-- pretty much under the radar, but it's still going on. Trigger played with a bunch of guys form the bar (Bingo the door guy on bass and this dude Joe) and Jesse Malin. They were great. Appropriately, they played I Wanna be sedated and Blitzkrieg Bop. I took some pictures that didn't come out because someone was throwing beer in the crowd. It was dirty, loud, and smelly-- the de rigueur Continental experience.
Murphy's Law played there on the 16th. Were you there on the 17th (the final night)? If so, I'd love to hear about it.
----
HR will be rejoining Bad Brains for two CBGB gigs in October. Jesse Malin is playing two shows at the Living Room during CMJ.

Jesse was loitering outside the Murphy's Law show for a while but eventually came in to check out that show as well.

the rockers arent far - they're all over at Otto's Shrunken Head now with the great Frank Wood. Jon Law (Banana Fish) is over there all the time. also Lenny Kaye, some NY Dolls, tons of other greats, along with tons of great new bands. mostly Sunday nights that is. this isnt to pimp the place, it's just what came to mind when i read the post.
keep it alive!

Went to the show on the 17th and caught the second band of the night who were The Bullys. They were fantastic. Great songs, tight band and a rareity in that they have a great singer. Next up was Lenny Kaye and Tony Shanahan who played 7 songs which were nothing special.
Handsome Dick then came on with Ross The Boss, JP Patterson and Dean from Murphy's Law. Played five songs which included Haircut and Attitude, Master Race Rock, and Faster and Louder. Ross sounded fantastic and the band sounded good although the guys did not have an opportunity to rehearse that much. Left afterwards as I was at the Atlantic Ave. Antic to see the Fleshtones and I had to go to work early the next morning.

I was there on the last night. Walked in during Lenny Kaye's last song, which was a rambling but fun version of "Gloria."
Manitoba came on and told the crowd not to be sad that the Continental and CBGB are closing because he's still around, then kicked into "The Party Starts Now."
C.J. Ramone and Daniel Rey anchored a Ramones tribute set to close it out. C.J. was pretty unremarkable singing "Rockaway Beach" and "Beat On The Brat." Rey was more compelling doing "Poison Heart." Mick from L.E.S. Stitches did a very good "53rd & 3rd." Walter Lure of The Heartbreakers did a Ramones song and "Born To Lose." Set proper closed with "I Wanna Be Sedated," with Trigger on additional guitar. Encore was a cover of the Stones' "The Last Time" with Lure on vocals.
Not a life-altering experience, but it was fun.
