Sure Juror | MP3s
DOWNLOAD: Sure Juror - GAWd (MP3)

One of my favorite albums of the year so far is one that I don't even think came out this year - actually I don't know if it technically ever "came out" at all. It's an album I just first listened to a few days ago on J Heartonastick's insistence. It's one I've barely stopped listening to since, and it's one that You Ain't No Picasso, Exit Fare, and The Underrated Blog have been raving about for months. It's a self-titled album by an unsigned NJ band called Sure Juror, and it's available (as MP3s) for 100%-FREE on their blog (you'll also find it on an indie-friendly torrent site near you). The track above comes from it, and so does the one below:

More MP3s at Heartonastick. Their second album called Smut comes out soon too, and they have four demos from that one streaming on their MySpace (but listen to the first one first).
No scheduled shows at the moment. stay tuned.

Love this guys! I like their songs and I have one in MP3 already. They don't only have great songs but they certainly look cute.

Just listened. I think they're really good. Good sense of melody. Thoughtful arrangements of otherwise conventional indie-pop. I guess they could be compared to the shins...not a perfect match but close. Voice is convincing and doesnt get lost in the music too much as is the case with other bands of this genre. I say check em out for sure. I'd love to see them live; I bet they'd be even better that way.

agree mostly with dave. thought of the shins as well. intricate melodies, some of them a bit too ambitious and fail to hang together. voice a bit grating & pitched annoyingly for me at first; but I have a strong feeling though that it'll grow on me. lyrically average. But all in all, a good first listen and something that'll pull me back -- just due to the song structures if nothing else.

one of the guys in the band tried to put his hand down my pants, and then he got me kicked off my college's radio station

What the hell? There are three entries about Sure Juror on danysloan's blog, and the only mention of what he(?) alleges is "When I first posted about this band back in June, my blog was a mere few weeks old and I was one of the few people championing Sure Juror, despite one of the members getting me temporarily kicked off of my college's radio station [it was all an accident though]." (http://exitfare.blogspot.com/2006/03/sure-juror.html) No mention of "[trying] to put his hand down my pants." Furthermore, Sure Juror is the blog's MySpace's top friend. Ew... you guys are all gay.

"james mercer is ten times the songwriter these guys will ever be"
-- this remains to be seen. Mercer's had 10+ years to develop. These kids just made a fucking record. It's nonsense to look at the work of artists still forming their sound and make silly predictions like the one above.

i think this band deserves some credit for their marketing ability. the "are they straight? are they gay?" angle, the suggestive photographs, naming their web site "fageater"...being that they're essentially a decent indie band in a world full of decent indie bands, i think their marketing angle is top notch.
