Here here! That J.Lo 'stach is hot hot hot...

Posted by Justin | September 1, 2006 8:10 AM

Sarah Silverman is soooo unfunny.

Posted by Anonymous | September 1, 2006 8:46 AM

i think sarah silverman is funny and also babely. i'm a lesbian, though, so that probably makes sense.

Posted by Anonymous | September 1, 2006 8:50 AM

what a parade of twats, dildos and fucking sacks of irrelevancy.

except james blunt. at least something's going right in the music industry today. the last bastion of decency, sincerity, talent.

can someone tell me what lou reed said about OR

Posted by Anonymous | September 1, 2006 9:11 AM

more green moustaches please

Posted by Anonymous | September 1, 2006 9:22 AM

he said they don't give head as good as antony.

Posted by Anonymous | September 1, 2006 9:22 AM

I figure the people that read this blog most likely don't watch MTV. For Ok Go, I am sad to say three words. Virtual Insanity Jamiroquai.

Posted by Anonymous | September 1, 2006 9:26 AM

nice! Okkervil got some free publicity. they deserve it

"can someone tell me what lou reed said about OR"

During the show Lou Reed co-presented "Best Rock Band" or whatever with the annoying pop star Pink. Before he read the nominees, Lou said something like "We need more rock bands". After the show the interviewer asked him to name some of those rock bands. He said "Okkervil River".

PINK was funny...she mocked Paris Hilton at the end of her speech...

Posted by Anonymous | September 1, 2006 10:10 AM

Was that Jim Jarmusch performing with the Racounters?

Sarah Silverman is soooo not funny.

Posted by Anonymous | September 1, 2006 10:23 AM

No award for Best Cape to Pete Wentz?

And when I was in high school and listening to Discount, Ann Beretta and The Causey Way, if you told me that one day Fueled By Ramen would be thanked on-air at the Video Music Awards, I probably would have bashed my brains in.

Posted by Joey | September 1, 2006 10:42 AM

the whole thing was pretty puke-tastic.

could jack black have seemed LESS enthused to be there? i think not.

could jack white have seemed LESS enthused to be there? i think not.

can i blame them? i think not.

does panic at the disco suck? i think so.

did axl rose look like a cross between danny bonaduce and kevin federline? i think so.

am i excited for jackass 2? HELL YES!

Posted by sam | September 1, 2006 10:54 AM

Seems the best thing apparently happened off camera. News media's are reporting that Mos Def showed up half way through outside on flatbed truck outside doing an impromptu performance about Katria, till the boys in blue arrested everyone involved.

Posted by Reg! | September 1, 2006 11:01 AM

I thought the best things on air were the looks of utter disdain. Like the one Jack White gave to Jack Black when the latter suggested they form a band... or the ones Pink and Lou Reed gave everyone when presenting the rock award (though what exactly Pink has to be snobbish about, I have no idea). and the ones the chick from Evanescence gave Jared Leto when she was forced to present with him and pretend to care about his group sex jokes.
God, I can't believe I watched it.

Posted by Amanda | September 1, 2006 11:48 AM

what's funny is everyone decrying this whole fiasco while greedily participating in it/watching it on tv. it's all shite, so don't support it or waste your time on it. it's like fucking fatsos knowing how crammed full of toxins and excrement that super-size bag of doritos is and yet shoveling it all in anyhow.

And the above applies to jack white, lou reed, et al, artists with integrity, who clearly feel the same way about the vma's, and yet showed up anyway to do what? to be caught on tv sneering and looking above it all? what's the value in that? that kind of ostentatious winking is worse to me than people who are there in all sincerity and enthusiasm, or who watch it happily.

Posted by Anonymous | September 1, 2006 11:58 AM

I thought Sarah Silverman's bit about Lance Bass was great.

Posted by Nineteen-ninety-never | September 1, 2006 12:02 PM

The show for the most part was utter shit. At the end when Panic won though I got the biggest smile on my face when that random dude jumped on stage and stole the microphone from them. They got told.

Posted by Gustavo | September 1, 2006 12:57 PM

does anyone remember what that guy's website was?

re: 10:23

yeah that was jim jarmusch..not david byrne.

ive made the mistake before too.

Posted by nick | September 1, 2006 1:17 PM

I think MTV either arranges these "award crashers" every few years, or at least encourages them and makes sure security at the stage is lax.

As for, um, no name who gives us shit for watching... you have NEVER watched something as a guilty pleasure, or just for a laugh? Good for you.

Posted by Amanda | September 1, 2006 1:17 PM

amanda, why do you feel guilty for deriving pleasure from it? b/c it's not the indie thing to do? b/c you're afraid all the open-minded, non-conformist indie fans will ostracize you for being different? i agree with no-name: if you disdain that scene, don't show up. if you like it, watch it and don't later talk about how you can't believe you watched it.

Posted by brando | September 1, 2006 1:37 PM

Oops, forgot to blog about Sarah Silverman on my site. Perhaps I can blog about her here?

Sarah Silverman Elicits Chuckles

Posted by The Apiary | September 1, 2006 4:20 PM

That is supposed to be funny?

Posted by Anonymous | September 1, 2006 4:58 PM

that was pretty dumb

Posted by Anonymous | September 1, 2006 6:38 PM

I loved how the All American Rejects claimed they're "going to get trashed after the show" after receiveing their award. They are so badass.

Posted by Anonymous | September 1, 2006 7:26 PM

David Bryne? How did I miss him?

Posted by Anonymous | September 1, 2006 7:29 PM

If you folks who are talking about who that was who performed with The Raconteurs, that was Lou Reed, not David Byrne or Jim Jarmusch. Not that I watched, but I can tell because under the photo of The Raconteurs performing with that guest artist, BV posted a link to his earlier blog entry about "Lou Reed performing Berlin w/ Antony & others."

Since Al Gore was there to talk about global warming and the carbon dioxide emissions that contribute to it, MTV should've decreased the amount of electricity this awards show consumed. Not that I would've held my breath in anticipation of their doing so if they had been told that before the show.

Posted by Sherlock Holmes | September 1, 2006 8:51 PM

awesome post. the vmas were definitely car-crash tv. felt nauseous the whole time, couldn't look away. watching that panic at the disco performance, i felt like i was being pickpocketed. pete wentz face makes me want to punch things really really hard. all american rejects totally won best performance for a band that pretended not to give a shit, with jack white in close second. and lou reed: why?

Posted by rena | September 2, 2006 2:54 PM

mmm the Teen Choice Awards did a better job than MTV VMAs-
I mean, C'mmon K-Fed performing his so indie single ('cause i could've figure out that song he did) on stage! Uuugh he should've played "Popozao"!
I watched the VMAs just last night and it was very distasteful. My mom was right. Poor mom. She was left at home thursday night all-alone watching the tele.

Aye, Ok Go is way better than Jamiroquai!

Posted by Raizza | September 3, 2006 4:04 PM

this is what happens when i watch mtv and mix up words: 'cause i couldn't* figure out that song he did

Posted by Raizza | September 3, 2006 4:08 PM

are pharrell and nigo dating?

Posted by Anonymous | September 3, 2006 5:17 PM

Eh, this is kinda already old news, but it seems only 5.77 million viewers on average watched the VMAs. That's pretty dismal, right?
http://www.broadcastingcable.com/article/CA6368436.html

I say they rehaul the fucker for next year and let Brooklyn Vegan and Stereogum be dual co-hosts....;-)

Posted by Dfactor | September 4, 2006 12:17 AM

It's ironic that Sarah Silverman said space travel is gay 'cuz when she scrunched her eyebrows in that YouTube clip, they looked like Mr. Spock's.

Posted by Lance Bass | September 9, 2006 2:20 PM

i love mike shinoda so much i want to marry him and his wife i love him to death 4 ever and i will never in my whole intire life forget him because i love him way way tooooooooo much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In The End

(It starts with)
One thing / I don’t know why
It doesn’t even matter how hard you try
Keep that in mind / I designed this rhyme
To explain in due time
All I know
time is a valuable thing
Watch it fly by as the pendulum swings
Watch it count down to the end of the day
The clock ticks life away
It’s so unreal
Didn’t look out below
Watch the time go right out the window
Trying to hold on / but didn’t even know
Wasted it all just to
Watch you go
I kept everything inside and even though I tried / it all fell apart
What it meant to me / will eventually / be a memory / of a time when I tried
so hard

And got so far
But in the end
It doesn't even matter
I had to fall
To lose it all
But in the end
It doesn't even matter

One thing / I don’t know why
It doesn’t even matter how hard you try
Keep that in mind / I designed this rhyme
To remind myself how
I tried so hard
In spite of the way you were mocking me
Acting like I was part of your property
Remembering all the times you fought with me
I’m surprised it got so (far)
Things aren’t the way they were before
You wouldn’t even recognize me anymore
Not that you knew me back then
But it all comes back to me
In the end
You kept everything inside and even though I tried / it all fell apart
What it meant to me / will eventually / be a memory / of a time when I
I tried so hard

And got so far
But in the end
It doesn’t even matter
I had to fall
To lose it all
But in the end
It doesn’t even matter

I’ve put my trust in you
Pushed as far as I can go
And for all this
There’s only one thing you should know
I’ve put my trust in you
Pushed as far as I can go
And for all this
There’s only one thing you should know
I tried so hard
And got so far
But in the end
It doesn’t even matter
I had to fall
To lose it all
But in the end
It doesn’t even matter

love you mike shinoda/ fort minor see ya
