One year older, Oh My Rockness has CMJ listings | Apes & Androids pics
Oh My Rockness celebrated their birthday with a show at the Annex in NYC last night. Apes and Androids played....
APES & ANDROIDS @ THE ANNEX, NYC | OCT 30, 2006 (CRED / MORE)

CINECULTIST WAS THERE
"For a bit now we've been hearing raves about this local band, Apes and Androids so when Janelle and Jen dragged Cinecultist to their Oh My Rockness show at the Annex last night, we had high expectations. Fortunately, A&A's dramatic antics and theatrical flare didn't disappoint, and the final number completely blew us away." [Cinecultist]
Apes & Androids' next three NYC shows are Wednesday night @ Galapagos (free Awesome-Inc show), Thursday night @ Studio B in Brooklyn (Insound party) and Tuesday November 14th @ Knitting Factory. Listings like that, and lots for CMJ, @ Oh My Rockness. Listen to A&A @ Myspace.

A letter from your host Dave Hill
DOWNLOAD: Haunted Cemetery (MP3)
Dear Friends,
I was just writing to let you know that this week is pretty much the most exciting week that has ever fucking happened ever. Shit. Fuck. Piss. Damn. Anyway, for starters, as many of you who read the popular Brooklyn Vegan website probably already totally know about, this week is the week during which the exciting College Music Journal Music Marathon (or CMJ as it is known to “some”) is happening. Talk about good times- this is an example of that. Whether you like music or simply like to stand in line with a bunch of people who do (Ha! That is a playful reference to the lines that are common during this exciting event)- trust me on this one- you could do a lot worse than to attend this popular annual musical festival happening right here in town.
Adding to the excitement is the fact that this year “CMJ” is happening the very same week as Halloween, the popular celebration of candy, costumes, and scary stuff in general. Why not get into the spirit of things by grabbing two of your friends and attending a CMJ rock show dressed as the Three Blind Mice, Charlie’s Angels, or something else that will keep people guessing? I am just thinking out loud here. Have fun with it.
Also, I realize that some of you who are attending “CMJ” are from out of town. So- on behalf of me and all the other people who live here in New York City- welcome to our fair city. There is so much to see and do. Also, New York is far less knifey and rapey than it has ever been, so don’t hesitate to really sink your teeth into things and take advantage of the “anything goes” approach to life that we, as New Yorkers, get to enjoy every single day without even thinking about it. “A punk rocker, a Rastafarian, and a Hasidic Jewish guy all hanging out together eating Chinese food made by a Mexican person? It is now that I have seen everything,” you might say to yourself at some point during your visit. And to that I say “Ha! Welcome to New York City! Mexicans are everywhere in this town!”
Another thing I wanted to mention is that Brooklyn Vegan, the website on which you are reading this right now, is hosting three shows during “CMJ” and you should totally come to all of them. They are happening on Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday of this week (You can probably click on something somewhere in the sentences I am typing here to find out the exact info). I am hosting the Wednesday and Friday shows and the lovely and talented Sara Schaefer is hosting the Saturday show. She is really nice and pretty but also married, so just, like, know that going in, okay?
Okay, so that about covers it as far as the topics I wanted to cover here in this letter. See you around town soon or something I hope. That would be so great.
Your man,
Dave Hill

no Yo La Tengo Hanukkah shows this year
Thanks to all who sent me this sad note...
Hey everybody,RELATED: Ira tells Pitchfork his favorite venue is Maxwell'sIn answer to the most FA'd Q of the last few months, we have reluctantly decided not to play the eight nights of Hanukkah this year at Maxwell's. We have concluded that our touring schedule is such we just wouldn't be able to put together a lineup as Hanukkahriffic as years past. Was the refusal of the cast of "The Times They Are A-Changin'" to take part the last straw? Really, is there anything to gain in assessing blame? But yes, it was.

The Bird & The Bee | MP3s & Tour Dates (CMJ, Sia)
The Bird & The Bee are Greg Kurstin and Inara George. "Greg and Inara met a few years ago. Discovered a common love of jazz standards...nerded out for a couple of hours playing every song they knew...and then wrote and recorded a record together." That record will be released in 2007, but their 1st EP comes out today. It's four soothing songs total, most of which can be heard on their MySpace. The fourth track is just a remix of one of the other song by Peaches. Big Stereo has that one for download. I think I like the original better. Fluxblog has another MP3 track.
When I first saw that The Bird & The Bee were playing with Keren Ann at Hiro Ballroom on October 31st (ALSO TONIGHT!), I at first confused them for Keren's side-project called Lady & Bird - don't make the same mistake. Those who miss the Halloween show have a second CMJ-chance to catch The Bird & The Bee @ Bowery Ballroom on November 1st. Miss that one too? They're coming back when they go on tour with Sia. That show is on November 21st @ Webster Hall.
All tour dates below...
THE BIRD & THE BEE | 2006 TOUR DATES
Oct 31 2006 Hiro Ballroom New York, NY
Nov 1 2006 Bowery Ballroom New York, NY
Nov 2 2006 The Showbox Seattle, WA w/ Sia
Nov 3 2006 Wonder Ballroom Portland, OR w/ Sia
Nov 6 2006 The Fillmore San Francisco, CA w/ Sia
Nov 7 2006 House of Blues San Diego, CA w/ Sia
Nov 8 2006 The Avalon Hollywood , CA w/ Sia
Nov 14 2006 Fine Line Music Cafe Minneapolis, MN w/ Sia
Nov 21 2006 Webster Hall New York, NY w/ Sia

When Jared Leto attacks (Elijah Wood) | pics
DOWNLOAD: Voicedude - The Crazy Voices Inside My Head (MP3)
"He then comes over to Elijah’s table. I’m like 'Oh my god they are totes gonna make out'. Jared puts his arm on the hobbits back and starts whispering stuff in his ear and and occasionally pulling back to look him in the face" [DListed]

"Jared then walks away and Elijah turns to his date for the evening friends and says something. Well something about this must have pissed Jared off because he comes running back to the table, grabs Elijah by the neck and starts screaming at him. All I could catch was Jared calling him a “fucking asshole”. He then shoves Elijah and storms off. Bodyguards come up and Elijah assures everyone he’s fine."

SOMEONE TOLD ME
"Mos was on stage for most of the night, but mostly in the background playing the cowbell or tambourine. He came to the front and freestyled during 4 or 5 songs. His timing was great. He knew exactly when to bring that energy....There was probably only 100 people there, so you could imagine the vibe of Mos on stage with a live 8 piece brass band."

NEW ALBUM OUT FEBRUARY 6th, 2007
"New Magnetic Wonder marks The Apples in Stereo’s first album in five years and features an array of special guests including many members of the Elephant 6 collective. Sticking with their indie-rock pedigree the Apples sought the production skills of acclaimed engineer Bryce Goggin (Pavement, Sebadoh, Phish, Sean Lennon) who mixed their last record 'Velocity of Sound.' The album also features a new musical scale invented by lead singer Robert Schneider called The 'Non-Pythagorean Scale.' This scale will be featured on an enhanced portion of this multimedia CD release, which includes digital files for MIDI usage and an in-depth description by Schneider of how to experiment with the new scale both in document and video form."
People keep telling me Jeff Mangum is one of those people that guests on the album - the album being put out with the help of Elijah Wood.
NEW DRUMMER
"John Dufilho, lead singer and principal songwriter of The Deathray Davies, has joined Denver-based The Apples in Stereo. Dufilho replaces original Apples drummer Hilarie Sidney, who left this past August." [Texas Gigs]

3 FREE AFTERNOON SHOWS
I decided not to go with an RSVP for these shows. Show up as early as you can - we'll keep letting people in until the venue reaches capacity. Then we'll try to figure out when people leave so we can let more people in.
Pianos and Fontana's have open bar areas that are separate from the show area, so you can still hang out if the show is full. Upstairs and downstairs at Pianos are separate shows - each has its own "door" and capacity.
Just working out the final details on alcohol sponsorships/specials - stay tuned.

A pre-CMJ interview with David Deporis
David Deporis isn't actually playing CMJ this year, but he is playing the free BrooklynVegan show upstairs @ Pianos on November 1st @ 4 pm. Above video shot by Punkcast.
Name and occupation?
David Deporis, musicalia
Is this your first time playing CMJ?
Played it once before with Doveman, Cloud Cult and Aziz Ansari at Tonic, a fun night.
Any tips for those coming from out of town?
Kind of out of phase with New York City at the moment and typing you from Florida where the American Dream floats around like a confused manatee with speedboat propeller scars on its back and a Ronald McDonald wig on. Well, New yorkers like to move fast, elbowing to get on subways and all that. PErhaps due to my rusticity at the moment, I would encorage visitors to avoid all that and go to Central Park, it's a fine and labyrinthine place.
Oh yea, Red Hook is fantastic, I really love going out there and walking around. In years past, I would go out there with unfinished songs and just wander around as the forge in my brain shaped and bent the components of the songs into seaworthy compositions.
I like to stretch out and take up a lot of space these days so my suggestions reflect that. If you don't mind the crowds, there are the usual suspects (museums, bars, times square with it's scrolling billboards and barkers, etc).
In any case, enjoy your stay travelers and I'll see some of you at the show...

"As that crisp autumn air falls on our fair city, so will a bunch of bands next week for the official CMJ bonanza. This year's lineup at Sound Fix has us really excited, not only for the big names (Portastatic, Dirty on Purpose, Ladybug Transistor, Swearing at Motorists, David Bazan of Pedro the Lion, Diamond Nights) but for those artists who we think are on the verge of major acclaim (Frida Hyvonen, whose brilliant new record is our pick of the week, Benjy Ferree, White Whale, My Brightest Diamond, Micah P. Hinson and much more). We hope to see a lot of you for what will be a special four days of free shows."
"The schedule is subject to change (most likely, though, we will be adding bands, not subtracting them); go to our web site or swing by the store for up-to-the-minute changes. "

Sara Schaefer to host BrooklynVegan party | the DL
DOWNLOAD: Elvis Perkins - Mayday (MP3)
SARA SCHAEFER @ UCB, NYC | FEB 1, 2006 (CRED)

You may know Sara Schaefer the comedian, who, as host of Video Gaga at NYC's UCB Theatre, has worked with musical acts like Elvis Perkins, Lisa Loeb, and Dujeous. You've seen her interviewed on Gothamist and gossiped about on the Apiary. And speaking of the Apiary - if you read it on a regular basis then you know by now that Sara Schaefer will also be the guest host at my free BrooklynVegan show @ The Annex in NYC on Saturday November 4th, 2006 (noon-5pm). There she'll be reunited on stage with Elvis Perkins -- full band list here.
I actually had no idea how busy Sara's been when I first asked her to do it. In fact, it wasn't until I found out about her performance alongside the Walkmen that I knew about her new gig at AOL. See her interview Regina Spektor, Frank Black and more at the DL.
Side note: Between the DL, their sweet downloadable "Interface" podcats, streaming albums, and their "indie" music blog (now called "spinner"), AOL seems to be using their money to slowly take over the online music world.
BrooklynVegan during-CMJ free show run down:
hosted by dave hill: (info)
* Wednesday November 1st, noon-5pm
* Friday November 3rd, noon-5:30pm
hosted by sara schaefer:
* Saturday November 4th, noon-5pm
hosted by liberated matter:
* Wednesday November 1st, noon-5:30pm

An article on music venues in the NY Times
Here are some highlights from the article....
Bowery Presents Capacities: "250-capacity Mercury to the 575-person Bowery to Webster Hall, at 1,400"
Gramercy Theater: "Live Nation also plans to start presenting concerts in January at the former Gramercy Theater on East 23rd Street, which will hold about 600." (this has been a rumor for a while)
Live Nation booking new Luna Lounge: "reopening by the end of the year in Williamsburg at 300 to 350 capacity, more than double its former size on Ludlow Street, where it closed last year."
Bowery Presents takes over Northsix: "It will be renovated, with upstairs balconies added, and is to open in the spring as the Music Hall of Williamsburg." (a few weeks ago someone tipped us to this in the comments, but Bowery Presents and Northsix both denied it when I contacted them)
The Box: "Another new Lower East Side club on the horizon is the Box, a 5,000-square-foot room on Christie Street whose owner, Simon Hammerstein — a grandson of Oscar — said he intended to open in the next two months with theater and music performances."
read the rest @ The NY Times.

Lady Sovereign @ The 2006 mtvU Awards, Roseland Ballroom, NYC | pics
DOWNLOAD: Lady Sovereign - Hoodie (Spank Rock remix) (MP3)

I was lucky enough to accidentally be standing next to Lady Sovereign for about ten minutes before she took the stage to introduce Gym Class Heroes. It was while they were announcing that she lost the "Most Original Artist" award to Gnarls Barkley, but I don't think she noticed.
My favorite performance of the night was just listening to her talk to everyone around us. Her "backstage" banter included a diss of Imogen Heap (who was also nominated in her category), and a lot of threats to the guy whose shoulders she was sitting/climbing on. On stage she refused to read from the teleprompter and claimed to be drunk.

This all happened at the 2006 mtvU Awards @ Roseland Ballroom in NYC on Wednesday October 25th.
Jared Leto was there beating people up.
Lady Sov was also seen posing with Ghostface.
Last time I randomly ran into her was at SXSW.
With her new video recently reaching #1 on TRL, her MTV reach is already way beyond MTV's mtvU.
See her on tour.

2006 mtvU Woodies | Jared Leto vs Stereogum & Elijah Wood
FRED ARMISEN INTRODUCES TV ON THE RADIO

I was one of the many bloggers in attendance at this year's mtvU Awards @ Roseland Ballroom in NYC on Wednesday night (October 25, 2006). I wasn't live-blogging it, but I was taking pictures so I could blog about it right now.
Highlights included a 2-song performance each, by Beck and TV on the Radio, and entertaining presentations by Lady Sovereign, Ghostface Killah, Lupe Fiasco, Gogol Bordello's Eugene Hutz, and SNL comedian Fred Armisen (last year the real Lou Reed presented an award - this year the fake one).
JARED LETO WITH A WOODIE

Low points: the major-label dominated "College Students' Favorite Emerging Artists" nominee list and the resulting list of winners -- that includes Jared Leto's band 30 Seconds to Mars taking home the award for "best live action video" ("The music video that's so incredible, we'd watch it even without the music"). Admittedly I haven't even see the winning video, but it's so easy to hate the fact that Jared Leto is being awarded for his music, that I'll just go with it.
More importantly though -- the real Jared Leto 'live action' wasn't actually caught on tape (or was it?). And it came in the form of Angel Face's interaction with two prominent crowd members: one music-obsessed actor, and one (like myself) music-obsessed blogger. According to multiple sources, and while I wasn't looking, Jared Leto both started a fight with Elijah Wood AND injured Stereogum's blogging finger. Possibly due to an impending lawsuit, Stereogum's review of the show doesn't mention the account.
The awards air on TV and online in a few days.

"Duran Duran's comeback will continue without the services of Andy Taylor. The band's founding guitarist has split with the band again, this time ahead of a string of U.S. dates, beginning tonight (Oct. 26) in Chicago, due to a 'gulf' developing in their partnership." [Billboard]

Dave Hill to host two BrooklynVegan shows
You may remember performer, comedian & writer Dave Hill as a friend of Rufus Wainwright, Walter Schreifels & Fred Armisen, Moby, and Luna. Or you may just think of him as a fan of classic punk and metal. I like to think of him as the host of the first two free BrooklynVegan shows happening during CMJ this year.
Dave Hill hosts:
* Wednesday November 1st, noon-5pm
* Friday November 3rd, noon-5:30pm
Read Dave Hill's blog
----

MORE GOOD NEWS
Vitamin Water and Smart Water have agreed to supply some free drinks (for at least one of the shows). Plus, Rounder Records is sending some free CDs to give out, and Guitar World's gonna provide some reading material.
----
Stay tuned for the host announcement for the Saturday show.
Last year I did just one show. It was hosted by Aziz Ansari.

STYX playing a benefit @ the Hook in Brooklyn
DOWNLOAD: Styx - Mr Roboto (MP3)

Yesterday someone compared My Chemical Romance to STYX in the comments. Today I noticed STYX are playing a benefit @ The Hook in Red Hook, Brooklyn, NYC. Don't go expecting any Mr. Roboto (actually, you probably just shouldn't go at all).

a pre-CMJ interview with CSS
CSS (cansei de ser sexy) are playing the free BrooklynVegan show @ Pianos on Wednesday November 1st @ 4:15 pm. Their official CMJ showcase is at Bowery Ballroom the next night.
Name and occupation?
Lovefoxxx, singer and song writter.
Is this your first time playing CMJ?
Yeahhhh baby.
What were you doing last year during CMJ?
Last year we had just released our album in brazil. So we were doing a bunch of interviews... As for me, I think I was putting a new wallpaper on my bedroom but since the paint underneath of it was glossy pink all the papers sticked out in a matter of 3 weeks.
What else do you plan on doing or seeing while you're in NYC?
Ira wants to buy a jacket at Opening Cerimony, Adri wants to find an apartment to move in, Doo (our manager, the 7th member) wants to go to Central Park, I want to have breakfast at Clinton's (clinton st.), Brown's (Hester st) and Dinner (brooklyn) and see a friend! The rest of the girls are somewhere else now.

The Guard Attacks / Unreal Is Here
You Faded

Both of the above MP3s come from the recently-released "super-deluxe re-mastered" Chavez compilation that includes, among other things, "two CDs plus DVD, two 28-page books, and the two original studio albums". Pitchfork recently gave it a 9.4. To promote said compilation, Chavez are getting back together to play some shows. These to be exact:
CHAVEZ | 2006 TOUR DATES
Sat Dec 2 - Otto Bar Baltimore, MD w/ Endless Boogie (tix)
Sat Dec 16 - Warsaw Brooklyn, NY w/ Endless Boogie (tix)
Sat Dec 30 - Slim's San Francisco, CA
If you're not familiar with this indie rock band who were "active in the New York club scene in the mid to late '90s", you probably at least heard of their frontman Matt Sweeney from such projects as Billy Corgan's Zwan and Bonnie Prince Billy's Superwolf.

The Kooks @ Bowery Ballroom, NYC | pics
DOWNLOAD: Bob Marley - Jammin (MP3)
The Kooks played their first NYC show at Bowery Ballroom Monday night (October 23, 2006). Though they were lively and somewhat entertaining to watch on stage, I didn't really like the music. The whole reggae/funk thing they seem to be going for turned me off. And at the risk of sounding like I think I'm an expert, I'd say it wasn't done very well.
At least a couple hundred people in the crowd wouldn't agree with my negative assessment though - they were jumping up and down, singing along to every song, and screaming like the Beatles were in the building - I'm assuming most of them were, like the band, British (partly because I heard lots of accents all around me). Could be I'm too old, but I do love the Arctic Monkeys.

Though the show was sold out, the room wasn't as packed as usual. That's probably because the guest list was huge and a bunch of people didn't show up.
Two of the young British band members were wearing CBGB t-shirts which I thought was a nice touch....

Small Sins opened.
Qbertplaya enjoyed herself during their 40-45 minute set. As Bumpershine notes, "you can catch The Kooks on Saturday night (Oct 28) at Northsix and at a free in-store performance at Sound Fix on the same day at 3 PM."
My favorite Kooks song is sung by Lily Allen.

DOWNLOAD: Beck - Cell Phone's Dead (MP3)
The last-minute "solo acoustic" Beck show at Angel Orensanz (an old beautiful synagogue) in NYC Sunday night (Oct 22, 2006) wasn't very solo at all (his whole band was there), but I guess you could call it acoustic. There were no puppets, but there was a Casio. It was really great.

This was Beck's third NYC-area show this week. He also played one at the Theater @ Madison Square Garden and one at Loews in Jersey City. His fifth semi-public show will be at the mtvU awards on Wednesday.
Death Vessel opened.

Death Vessel was the surprise opener for Beck Sunday night...

"Nothing melts a jaded man's heart like the sound of a beautiful female voice singing songs of love, loss, and longing—even when they're being sung by a guy. Joel Thibodeau, a slight young man with a freakishly high-pitched (but gorgeous) voice who goes by the name of Death Vessel (which could also fall under the "Best Band Name" category), is one of the city's most talented singer-songwriters." ABOUT THE BROOKLYN PEACE FAIR:
The Brooklyn Peace Fair is NYCs largest annual grassroots event dedicated to the promotion of peace, social justice, and education on sustainable development. The event is organized by Brooklyn Parents for Peace, a non-profit organization which has been working to raise awareness through education and collective citizen activism in NYC and abroad for over 22 years.
Sunday October 22, 2006 marks the 4th year of the annual event. Thousands of attendees will participate in a day of discussion, workshops, keynote speeches, music, and art -- a true community-building program that involves the participation of hundreds of organizations city-wide.
Speakers include writer, poet, and playwright Sonia Sanchez who will share insights from her life's work as a leader of the Civil Rights and Black Arts Movements; Roger Touissant, President of the Transit Workers Union; Medea Benjamin, Co-Founder of CODEPINK; Sheldon & Anita Drobny, Co-Founders of Air America Radio; The Honorable Marty Markowitz, Brooklyn Borough President; and journalist Michael Massing.
The Peace Fair will bring together a diverse range of emerging local artists and musicians committed to pushing the boundaries of their respective genres while exercising their own DIY-ethic. They represent a cross-section of music that combines and bridges a wide-range of styles and genre. Most importantly, these musicians have raised a creative call to arms, with reverence to the great agitators of the past, and with regard for future generations to come.

Christina Courtin
"'The excitement for Christina is similar to what I saw with Norah Jones,' says Brice Rosembloom, who cooked both women for residencies at Makor, 'The difference is that with Norah, it took a push from the industry to get things going. With Christina, the buzz is purely audience driven.'"
"Courtin’s bold, busy voice touches on both Janis Joplin and Antony, and her songs have an immediately classic feel—like Norah Jones, with more brawn." [Time Out]
Everyone keeps telling me I have to see Christina Courtin perform. And over the past few months I've made numerous attempts to see her at NYC places like Joe's Pub, Rockwood Music Hall and Mo Pitkins, but It never worked out. So thankfully she just put the above video on YouTube to hold me over for a bit. Is Christina the "next Norah Jones"? Better? I think at least definitely more interesting. I hope to find out for myself when she plays Merkin Concert Hall with Bell Orchestre.
Hey, that drummer (mathias kunzli) looks familiar.

Pete Townshend wouldn't see the Who | Sting prefers 16th century English ballads
"Sting says contemporary rock music is so stagnant that he prefers to sing 16th century English ballads.
By comparison, Pete Townshend can't stand old rock stars and wouldn't even pay to see his own concert." [smh]

Bar/None Records is celebrating its 20th Anniversary, bringing together old friends, former employees and artists past and present for a special evening of performances at Supreme Trading in Williamsburg, Brooklyn on Saturday, November 11. Artists scheduled to appear include They Might Be Giants, Mosquitos, Freedy Johnston, Mendoza Line, Brian Dewan and many more. Tickets can be purchased at the door for $10. Doors are 6 PM, festivities begin at 7PM. Supreme Trading is located at 213 n. 8th Street (718-599-4224, ).
You can start the fun early at Bar/None’s official CMJ showcase, November 1 at Tonic, 107 Norfolk St, Manhattan, with Mosquitos, The Slip, Hotel Lights, Oppenheimer and Birdie Busch."
The rest of the press release below....
Surviving as an independent record label in the constantly trend- shifting music business for two decades is indeed a remarkable feat, but the Hoboken, NJ-based Bar/None has a lot more to celebrate than just its survival. The label continues to be a vital player on the indie scene, with a current roster featuring such artists as Architecture in Helsinki, the Spinto Band and the soon-to-be-released The Slip, who can’t make the party since they’ll be on the road with My Morning Jacket.
You can say that Bar/None Records has always remained one step ahead of the curve, but the truth is, no one at the label was ever really trying just to anticipate the next big thing. They did A&R the old fashioned way: they listened to music, they fell in love with it, they shared their unique and quirky discoveries with the rest of us.
Co-founders Glenn Morrow and Tom Prendergast would probably admit they didn’t go into this back in 1986 with a real business plan, but they did have passion, a certain fearlessness and, we know now, really good musical instincts. Their first joint effort as record company owners was the debut album from They Might Be Giants, which instantly put the label and the band on the indie rock map (as well as on MTV).
That label-establishing, left-field hit set the tone for everything that followed over the next two decades. Just dip into the online catalogue and you will find lots of surprises, acts that Bar/None had championed long before the pundits of the blog-o-sphere were even old enough to buy CDs at their neighborhood brick-and-mortar record store, including the earliest recordings from Of Montreal and the pastoral sound of Lullaby For the Working Class, which featured Ted Stevens of Cursive/Mayday and the young Mike Mogis, the producer behind Bright Eyes and all things Saddle-Creek. Then there was the unforgettable Space Age Bachelor Pad Music of Esquivel! (yes, that’s where the now-famous expression comes from): Arto Lindsay’s sexy, iconoclastic take on bossa nova music: an acoustic solo album from the KLF’s mad genius Bill Drummond; the debut disc from the moody yet dashing British quintet Tindersticks; the chart-topping “A Girl Like You” from the brilliant Edwyn Collins; and heartbreakingly beautiful songs from Freedy Johnston, who made Bar/None his first home.
There were times, we admit, when it looked as if Glenn & Co. couldn’t possibly stick it out another month, that the dream might truly be over, the delicate balance between profit and loss having suddenly gone all out of whack. Then something miraculous would happen, the most unlikely project would connect with a real audience. The Langley School Music Project came along at one of those moments, and it illustrated just what makes Bar/None so special. The album, rescued from thrift-shop obscurity, wasn’t marketed as kitsch – it was an album to seriously fall in love with, not laugh at -- an improbably affecting collection of classic rock numbers performed by a choir of school kids. Glenn’s eyes would mist up when “Desperado,” sung by a preternaturally expressive ten year-old, came on the office sound system, and soon sensitive souls all around the world found themselves reaching for the tissue box too. If you’re not afraid to wear your heart on your sleeve, then Bar/None has always been the label for you.
Following the success of the Langley School, Bar/None was back on a roll, with Japanese duo Puffy AmiYumi, who landed their Cartoon Network animated TV series after the release of their first Bar/None disc; NYC bossa nova trio Mosquitos, whose “Boombox” became the most oft-licensed track in Bar/None history; plus Mason Jennings, Evan Dando and the inimitable Trachtenburg Family Slide Show Players. And that’s merely mentioning a few.
So let’s take a minute to salute the taste, the perseverance, the blind faith and dumb luck that has made Bar/None Records a part of our lives for twenty years. Then, let’s get back to work.
-Michael Hill

The bands are playing in Fontana's cozy basement. There will be DJ's playing in the huge upstairs area (TBA).

This is one of three Thermals show during CMJ this year. The first is Thursday night at Bowery Ballroom during the sold-out Sub Pop showcase (though some badges will get in). And the third is later the same Friday night (Nov 3rd) --- ProductShop NYC presents The Thermals, Horrors, Birdmonster, Sam Champion, and Ra Ra Riot @ Studio B in Brooklyn.
----

This show has partially been made possible by Guitar World magazine and Rounder Records.

I've been a little obsessed with Patti Smith since witnessing her amazing performance at CBGB on Sunday. That said, the 3.5 hour show was enough to hold me over for a while so I probably won't be attending one of her annual New Years shows at Bowery Ballroom. But you probably should.

Explosions in the Sky - news
EITS @ BOWERY BALLROOM, NYC | SEPT 3, 2006 (CRED)

this article posted on: Sun., October 8, 2006
---
Hello, everyone...
We're happy to report that we've finished recording our next album. We recorded in Minnesota at a studio called Pachyderm, a place surrounded by 50 acres of wilderness and snakes and ghost stories. We had a bonfire, cooked cheeseburgers on the grill, went for hikes and made a trip to the Mall of America (or Mall Like Any Other Mall Except Bigger). And of course we played some new music. It's taken us a while but we're extremely excited with the results. We can't say for certain when the album will come out, but it looks like it will be late February or early March. We'll let you know as soon as we find out.
After recording, we drove to New York City and played a show as part of the Temporary Residence Tenth Anniversary weekend. Jeremy, if you read this, we're proud of you and we love you. Also, a couple of weeks ago we played at the Austin City Limits Festival. If you braved the heat and oppressive rush of bodies to come see us, then we love you, too. For us it was one of those shows where we might have played well or we might have been abysmal--we literally have no idea. Thankfully we had a nighttime slot, and it was interesting to hear Willie Nelson between our songs. That helped to alleviate some of our terror.
There are a few shows coming up. All of them are in California (San Fransisco, Los Angeles, and Pomona) and you can find out more about them on the "shows" page. Middle America, we know we've been showing an apparent love for the coasts these past couple of years but we will see you early in 2007. As for Europe, Asia, and Australia...we will be visiting you as well in 2007. And hopefully some other places (Mexico, South America), too.
Thanks for caring.
Love,
Explosions

NME coverstars Klaxons coming back to U.S. - tour dates (CMJ) + Halloween MoFo w/ Morningwood & secret band
NME | OCT 7, 2006

Klaxons are coming back to the States. On November 1st they're playing one of those super-hard-to-get-into-late-night VICE CMJ-afterparties at Cake Shop in NYC. Then they go to Philly, and on November 4th they come back to play Galapagos in Brooklyn (also during CMJ). Then they go to Cali.
The next NYC Motherf*cker party happens on Halloween at the Roxy (flyer). NYC's own Morningwood (the band everyone loves to hate even more than the Klaxons) are playing. Plus there's a "'laid back' performance by secret band" @ 1:30 am. All I know is the 'secret band' is from the UK, and it's during CMJ, so it could be anyone.
All tour dates below...
UPDATE: This Klaxons tour has been cancelled.

Patti Smith & Flea @ CBGB's final show | pics
DOWNLOAD: Jim Carroll Band - People Who Died (MP3)
(as you know) Patti Smith played the last show at CBGB's Sunday night, October 15th, 2006. I figured there'd be a bunch of special guests -- at least for the encore -- or maybe a secret opener. Nope. There was no opener. She dedicated "Space Monkey" to Michael Stipe, but he wasn't there like he was in 2005. And though Television's Tom Verlaine was a character in many of her on-stage stories -- including one about her recording with him "LAST NIGHT" -- he was nowhere to be found (actually she told us he sent his regards). Television guitarist Richard Lloyd was there though, as was sometimes-Patti Smith bassist Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
PATTI STARTED THE SHOW WEARING THIS

There was a roughly 25-minute painful intermission at this show. I say painful because it just meant more time trapped in place at this extremely crowded, long, bathroom-less show. I say bathroom-less because they closed the downstairs bathrooms - you had to go next door. The show was great - don't get me wrong, but it wasn't exactly comfortable.
SHE CAME BACK DRESSED LIKE THIS

Audience members worth noting: Talking Heads' Chris Franz & Tina Weymouth, Jesse Malin (who helped close out Continental, but not CBGB), Rolling Stone Magazine's David Fricke, Jim Carroll (who Lenny Kaye also played/plays guitar for), Michael Azerrad (This Band Could Be Your Life), CBGB owner Hilly Kristal, Little Steven Van Zandt (who tried to save the place) and The Dictators' Andy Shernoff (who played the night before), and the guy in the picture below...

"At the end of a three-and-a-half hour show, on the last night of music at the New York club CBGB, Patti Smith read a list of the fallen, just a few of the musicians and spirits who were so important to the room's legend but couldn't be there for the October 15th wake. They included the Cramps' Bryan Gregory, the critic Lester Bangs, singer Helen Wheels, guitarist Robert Quine, Johnny, Joey and Dee Dee Ramone and Smith's original pianist Richard Sohl. As her band played at soft funeral-march volume behind her, someone in the audience yelled out, "You missed one." Smith smiled. "We remember everything," she said with maternal assurance. Then she pointed out that CBGB was expiring at thirty-three -- the same age as Jesus." [David Fricke in Rolling Stone]

Television's Richard Lloyd played guitar with Patti Smith and band (Lenny Kaye, Jay Dee Daugherty & Tony Shanahan) on stage for a few songs at CBGB's final show Sunday night, October 15, 2006. Richard's young son was up front in the over-packed audience. Tom Verlaine was home sleeping?

I heard the Dead Boys' Sonic Reducer twice this weekend. - first it was covered by the Dicators on Saturday and then again at this show by Patti Smith & band. Sonic Reducer, was originally a Rocket From the Tombs (RFTT) song. RFFT are a pre-Dead Boys band who never originally officially recorded an album sort-of. Richard Lloyd is a member of the reunited Rocket From the Tombs.

NOW THAT WE DON'T NEED TO SAVE CBGB
"Insound.com, the premier online retailer for independent music, has launched a campaign to 'Save The Album.' The campaign is designed to help celebrate a format that has endured recent threats at the hands of single track sales and subscription offers. Noted and respected indie artists The Decemberists, Bloc Party, The Mountain Goats, Devendra Banhart, Pretty Girls Make Graves, The Walkmen, and Lou Barlow have recorded short video pieces celebrating their favorite albums. PATTI SMITH & LENNY KAYE @ CBGB | OCTOBER 15, 2006

"When I started performing a lot with Lenny Kaye and Richard Sohl, we had goals: to infuse new life into performing poetry—merging poetry with electric guitar, three chords—and to reembrace rock and roll. It drew us together and kept us informed, whether through Bob Dylan or Neil Young or the Who. In the early seventies, rock and roll was monopolized by record companies, marketing strategies, stadium rock. Tom Verlaine and Television were for me the most inspiring: They were not glamorous, they were human." [Patti Smith to NY Magazine]
"Oh, we were further along in our development when we got there, just because Patti, for one, is such an astonishing creature intellectually and performance-ly, and all of the above. I've even seen videotapes of us in '74 where I – I think of that as fairly primitive in our development, yet we were pretty far along in terms of the structure of what we were dealing with." [Lenny Kaye to Furious]

There was a huge mob of press waiting to get inside CBGB by the time I got there at 6:30 pm Sunday night (October 15, 2006).

I managed to get inside for the press conference that was held during soundcheck. Most, if not all, of the video footage you saw on the news came from then. Patti Smith and band played a few songs and answered a bunch of questions, some mockingly. Then she told the press to get out. Those waiting on line were let in shortly thereafter for the show that ran until just after 1 a.m.

"Hundreds of music fans packed the small downtown club Sunday, while reporters hovered outside. The mood was both somber and raucous at CBGB, hailed by many as the birthplace of punk." [Washington Post]

"CBGB hosted its final concert Sunday night after a 33-year residence in downtown New York as the iconic, grungy bastion of punk." [ABC News]

"A memorial service for punk rock was held at the weekend at New York's CBGB club, birthplace of the movement in America, which closed its spit-spattered doors after 33 loud years, a victim of gentrification." [Guardian]

"Kids, they'll find some other club," Ms. Smith insisted during her set. "You just got a place, just some crappy place, that nobody wants, and you got one guy who believes in you, and you just do your thing. And anybody can do that, anywhere in the world, any time." [NY Times]

"The club, which has a capacity of 350 people, was easily packed with at least 500 faithful fans." [CNN]

"Everything will be moved into storage, as Kristal hopes to open a club and museum in Las Vegas in 2008 that will be an homage to CBGB, as well as other punk-era New York institutions, such as the Mudd Club and Max's Kansas City." [NY Post]

"Patti Smith said CBGB was more a "state of mind" than a venue and other clubs would replace it." [BBC]

"It was indeed a nasty, scary place" [letters @ CNN]

"Smith says, no matter what, she's grateful for the memories." [NY 1]

It was a media circus outside CBGB Sunday night (Oct 15, 2006). An ailing Hilly Kristal entered the club he owns around 7pm - not long before doors opened to the last show ever.

Ends up they held a press conference inside from around 7:20 - 8:00. The news media got to ask Patti Smith some questions and film some footage during soundcheck. Then they kicked all the press out before opening the doors to those waiting on line - some since 9am.

new Voxtrot EP & MP3 --- touring soon too
DOWNLOAD: Voxtrot - Trouble (new MP3)

As they did with Gorilla Vs. Bear and Chromewaves, PlayLouderRecordings (the new Beggars label) was nice enough to hand over this advance MP3 (see above) from Voxtrot's upcoming 3-song Playlouder debut. "Your Biggest Fan" is out November 7th, and can be pre-ordered for just $4.00 from Insound. Spend $26 more to get free shipping.
I have the whole EP, and like most of Voxtrot's songs - I didn't care for it at first, but the songs quickly grew on me to the point where parts of them got stuck on repeat inside my head.
At least one of the EP songs was debuted by Ramesh (yes, Ramesh!!) at the party I threw at Syrup room in June. The Ballet also played that show, and as previously noted, Ramesh appears on the Ballet's new album. The Ballet are also opening one of the two shows Voxtrot has coming up in NYC:
@ Bowery Ballroom, NYC
Nov 6: Voxtrot w/ Annuals and Finally Punk (tix)
Nov 7: Voxtrot w/ Mahogany and The Ballet (tix)
Voxtrot also appear on a new CD called "the kids at the club - An Indiepop compilation".
Annuals are also playing a BV show on November 4th.

The Dicators played CBGB Friday October 13th, 2006 - the last-ever Friday night show at CBGB's, and the first of a two-night run for the reunited 70's NYC punk band. The club closes forever Sunday night October 15th with a performance by Patti Smith.
I wasn't there Friday night, but "Adam" was nice enough to leave his review in the comments. I republished it below...
THE DICATORS backstage @ CBGB. NYC | OCT 13, 2006 (CRED)

----
I am not a big fan of nostalgia. When I look at the closing of CBGB, I don't feel too bad for Hilly as he is easily making millions a year in selling T-shirts in the malls of America. I also don't really believe in the idea of recreating CBGB in Las Vegas although it does make some sick sense. Imagine Joey Ramone slot machines combined with the sound of punk metal. Hell, I would go check it out when I am in Vegas.
Still the place for me was not as important as lets say the Bottom Line or the Capitol Theatre. There were folks there in the 70's who went every night. I was not one of them. But I was there often enough to appreciate the scenery and the music. It was part of my youth, my rebellious youth. I was into the Ramones, Dictators and Dead Boys along with stuff like Bruce. I remember the first time I saw the Ramones at CBGB and I got it like that. I got the weirdness, and the feeling of being disaffected along with the humor. They were brilliant in their prime as were the Dead Boys who were the most underrated live band out of that scene. A friend and I discussed a show they did at Town Hall as part of a record convention and a couple of people joined us in the discussion. All agreed it was an incredible show.
So I sold my Social Distortion ticket and went on line at CBGB around 7:15. Ran into my friend Mike F. who knows everyone from the CB scene and who has millions of stories which usually ends with Stiv Bators mooning someone. I also ran into Helen Wheels' brother who was also tight with everyone and he showed me a picture of his sister in a book about Jewish Punk Rockers that was being released in a party at CB Gallery. Helen was an important part of Blue Oyster Cult (co-writing some songs with the band) as well as performing at CBGB often in the late 70's. Her brother told us so many great stories including one of Patti Smith seducing a young Jackson Browne (or it might have been the other way around) I told him he has to write a book.
By the time we got in, it was about 8:50. CBGB is really a shithole and has changed little in the last 33 years. We went right to the front of the stage and stayed there all night. The Bullys were the first band on as they are really known as the band who lost their their guitarist and leader when 9/11 happened as he was a fireman who lost his life when the buildings collapsed. But as I wrote last month when the Continental closed, they are a rarity in that they are a local band with a great singer. They performed a quick half hour set with songs about fast food and fighting which is what you would expect from a punk band.
As we were waiting for the Sic F**ks, I realized it was a reunion. Sal C who is the Dictators archivist was there, Camilia S. who I worked with for a couple of years was wearing her original Dictators jacket from the Bloodbrothers album cover, Dave Z. and Marc S. was there and they are guys who I have known for 25 years as we went to Bruce shows together. We all lied about how good we looked (actually it was not a lie as everyone is doing well) and the many nameless folks who I know from the NY concert scene. Just a major party.
The Sic F**ks (who I will refer to as SF) came on and I was speechless for a moment. Tish and Snooky were their backup singers wearing garter belts (and looking good for middle age women) along with the band wearing dresses and garters. Middle age men should not wear garter belts, but lo and behold they did. The lead singer is a paunchy short balding guy. But they kicked ass last night. Russell the lead singer was diving into the audience and doing somersaults on stage while the band was grinding with the backup singers. Damn good set. Punky with elements of funk (they also had a clarinet player).
By now, it is around 11:30 and word gets to us that there is still a line outside of CB's.
Ah, the Dictators. I have waxed powerful words and ascribed many qualities to them that folks who don't get them don't understand. Over the last 10 years, they have been my favorite band since I rediscovered them at a Tom Clark benefit at Brownies in 1997. I went to see Patti but they headlined and absolutely were stunning. I have pretty much caught every NYC area gig since.
Their last gig was at the Little Steven Garage Festival where they were the best band that day. Mike was working backstage taking photos and told me stories of people coming up to him and asking him who they were as they could not believe how good they were. They foolishly lost the momentum from the disagreement between members of the band and did not perform since as a full band. The last time they played CBGB, it was for two nights to film a DVD and the performances were disappointing and the material was not released.
CB's by now is packed as the band comes on and storms into "New York, New York" with the opening lyrics of, "Smoking Marijuana, watching Channel Five" and then goes into "The Party Starts Now". Dick Manitoba is in great voice having trimmed down a couple of pounds since the almost Dics performed at the last night at the Continental.
Tonight the band is a five piece as Scott Kempner is in from LA. He was part of the original band but left around 2002 to move to the West Coast and the band performed as a four piece with the exception of the Little Steven gig. He is playing rhythm which allows Ross The Boss, who is the best unknown guitarist in America (In Europe he is revered for his work with Man Of War) to do lead.
The band rehearsed for two nights and are better than they should have been given those circumstances. They go into Master Race Rock which is off the first album which came out in 1973 and has these lyrics:
Hippies are squares with long hair
And they don't wear no underwear
Country Rock is on the wane
I don't want music, I want pain!
Dictators can swing
Make you dance and sing
Cause an oil spill
You don't know us, but you will!
We're the members of the master race
Got no style, and we got no grace
Sleep all night, sleep all day
Nothing good on t.v. anyway
Gasoline shortage won't stop me now, Oh no!
We've reached a higher spiritual plane
That is so high, I can't explain
We tell jokes to make you laugh
We play sports so we don't get fat
We can sweat and stink
We can eat and drink
Don't do what we're told
And we're scared of growing old!
We're the members of the master race
We don't judge you by your face
Lyrics written by young guys who loved White Castle and who still eat them. Dick does an intro before "Who Will Save Rock And Roll" talking about how good things have to end. How the Fillmore is an office building and a story about how he used water from the toilet at CBGB to do heroin. Hey, if he can survive that he can survive anything.
I fall to my knees
and look to the sky
Who will save rock and roll?
Murray The K is not here today
so who will save rock and roll?
Every protest singer
every guitar slinger
every punk rock sinner sells his soul
My generation is not the salvation
so who will save rock and roll
I saw The Stooges, covered with bruises
who will save rock and roll?
every mercenary
three chord revolutionaries
choose your side and choose it well
June 1st, 67 something died and went to heaven
I wish Sgt Pepper
never taught the band to play
my generation
is not the salvation
so who will save,
who will save
tell me who will save
rock and...... roll
The place goes goes insane as Ross goes into the riff for "Sonic Reducer". Dick looks up to the sky in memory of Stiv and the band starts to talk about the ones who are no longer with us who came out of CBGB, Joey, Johnny, Dee Dee, Johnny Thunders, Jerry Nolan. "Sonic Reducer" is ridiculous as Ross is playing lead which is incredibly fast and melodic. Keep in mind that he is two inches from my face. We are all sweating by now.
They play a couple of more songs and everyone is exhausted. It is 1:20 and I am going to the infamous bathroom which in order to get to you have to pass the cubicles that pass for dressing rooms. The band is greeting everyone and taking pictures and signing autographs.
An amazing night and for me they were the best band in the world last night. I also get to do it again tonight.
Adam

David Byrne skips Loser's Lounge for Jenny Lewis

"Loser’s Lounge is one of those New York City treasures that help make fighting through the crowded sidewalks and the rest of the daily hassles we face worthwhile." [The Villager]

I have nothing but love for the Loser's Lounge, but of course there's gonna be some backlash when people find out that, instead of the Beastie Boys, Television, Blondie, or even David Byrne and his real Talking Heads playing the fourth-to-last night ever at CBGB, CBGB's books your Talking Heads tribute act instead. Some thought maybe the real David Byrne would show up anyway - maybe to join them on stage for a song or two. Didn't happen. In fact, according to numerous commenters, David was enjoying himself further uptown at the Jenny Lewis and the Watson Twins show at Town Hall.

GLENNIS WAS AT TOWN HALL TOO
"I then went and watched the most adorable and wonderful concert at Town Hall; Jenny Lewis & The Watson Twins. I'm absolutely head over heels in love in a non-lesbo (but totes Glesbo) fashion with JL. Watch this video of her as a teen being interviewed by the crappy show "Teen Set" in 1991. She tries on hats and jumps on a trampoline."
MICHAEL WENT TO CBGB
"The band last night was the Loser's Lounge - a group that did covers of Talking Heads, Brian Eno, etc... but each song had a new singer who had once graced the CBGB's stage. I didn't know a lot of the names but their stories were all similar, 'I played here back in 1981! I can't believe it's over.'

Loser's Lounge next gigs will be in tribute to Elton John - Dec. 14, 15 & 16 @ Joe's Pub.
David Byrne recently saw Joanna Newsom and Under Byen while at Pop Montreal. Chart Attack says Under Byen was drowned out by crowd chatter.
Listen to the October 15th Jenny Lewis concert on NPR. You can also listen to Built to Spill.

Rock Band Name Origins
DURAN DURAN

B-52's - The beehive hairstyle popular in the 1950's (worn by band members) was called a B-52 after a type of large US Air Force bomber plane with that designation.
BEASTIE BOYS - According to Michael Diamond, BEASTIE stands for Boys Entering Anarchistic Stages Towards Internal Excellence.
BLUE CHEER - 60's nickname for high-quality LSD, and coincidentally a brand of laundry detergent (the band used the detergent idea on their album cover with "New, Improved, Blue Cheer" - surprised they didn't get sued for it. (tour dates)
DAVID BOWIE - born David Jones, he changed his name to avoid confusion with David (Davy) Jones of THE MONKEES.
CREED - This popular Florida band was named after former bassist Brian Marshall's earlier band Mattox Creed.
DURAN DURAN - named after a character in the Jane Fonda movie Barbarella.
GUNS 'N' ROSES - originally two bands L.A. GUNNS and HOLLYWOOD ROSES. Hollywood Roses was headed by Axl Rose, Tracii Guns headed the other band which also featured Slash Izzy. The two frequented clubs and played there and were friends.
RADIOHEAD - Named after a Talking Heads' song called "Radio Head."
RAMONES - Paul McCartney used to call himself Paul Ramone. The Ramones all use the last name Ramone even though it's not their given name.
TALKING HEADS - probably from the video jargon for a camera shot showing only the head & shoulders of a person. Newscasters are usually shown this way and it makes for boring TV. Another story says they were inspired by a military experiment involving talking mannequin heads.
U2 - Three possibilities: 1) A type of spy plane used by the United States in the 1960's - made famous when Gary Powers' U2 plane was shot down over Russia and he was taken as a
prisoner during the Cold War. 2) U2 as in "you too" referring to the audience and its role in the musical experience 3) a U2 is an unemployment form in Ireland (see UB40)

Bastard & Hippocamp Ruins Pet Sounds (MP3 mashups)

THERE'S THIS
"Pet sounds is an album that everyone should own, study, cherish, and enjoy. Hippocamp Ruins Pet Sounds is an open-ended experiment conducted out of reverence, curiosity, and awareness of the sobering fact that you can't improve upon perfection."
AND THERE'S THIS
"Here is Pet Sounds, the mythic album by the Beach Boys, mashed up with contemporary (and some older) pop/rock... artists. This way of mixing complete stranger songs together is often called Bastard Pop, if you ever asked yourself why I gave my project this name." (via Cosmic Cowgirl, Idolator, and Gorilla vs. Bear)

new Voice not as big Hold Steady fans
Chris Ott's new "Blogwash" column is one of the better things to happen to the Voice lately. I may not always agree with him -- I may even be too dumb to understand what he's talking about, but his seemingly-informed controversial analyses of hot bands are at least thought provoking and interesting reads. Last time he did the Pipettes. This time he talks about The Hold Steady's "subservient debt to Bruce Springsteen", and doesn't seem to agree with "Pitchfork (which I contributed to for years)" for awarding "their new album Boys and Girls in America the site's best rating of the year so far, a 9.4 out of 10."

during-CMJ Wednesday day show (main stage) lineup

I'm psyched to FINALLY announce the first of four 2006 during-CMJ BrooklynVegan day show lineups. I actually only have three shows, but the first one is Wednesday November 1st at Pianos where there will be separate acts playing upstairs and downstairs. Here's the noon-5pm DOWNSTAIRS (main stage) LINEUP:
* CSS
* Thunderbirds are Now!
* Land of Talk
* The Little Ones
* Nicolai Dunger
* Loney, Dear
* Sure Juror
This show is free, and there should be some free alcohol, and food even too. There might be an RSVP. Loney Dear and Nicolai are friends and will hopefully collaborate on stage during the course of their two sets. 21+ (sorry 'bout that). More details TBA as I figure them out.
----
This show was partially made possible by Rounder Records - home of Nicolai Dunger. Home also of Vienna Teng, The Damnwells, and Madeleine Peyroux. I'm glad to have Nicolai playing this show, and I'm glad to have Rounder Records as a sponsor. Did you know that "Rounder was one of the very first labels to become involved with compact discs, in 1985"? Neither did I.
----
CSS and Loney, Dear are also playing the now-sold-out Sub Pop showcase.
3 more linueps + DJs & hosts + more sponsors TBA.

Tenacious D | 2006 Tour Dates & presale
When I saw Tenacious D at Roseland (1/22/02) it was great, but of course it was still big stupid Roseland. I can only imagine the shows at Irving Plaza (8/30/99), Bowery Ballroom (4/18/00), and Town Hall (9/8/01) were better (especially Bowery!), and I can only imagine that a Tenacious D show in a stadium would be infinitely worse.
The presale for Tenacious D December 1st at MSG starts October 12th @ noon. Password: BADESTINY (thx KK, Andrew & TM)
It might be worth going if they do anything as cool visually as Roger Waters, though I think I'll just stick with the movie.
Neil Hamburger is opening. That's prety sweet for him and those who do go. I forgot to post a review of his recent funny show at Pianos.

Madball was a sweet last minute addition to the last hardcore matinee show at CBGB's on Sunday October 8, 2006. Vocalist Freddy kept saying he never thought he'd play on the CBGB stage AGAIN. That was before his final-final appearance which was when he later joined his big brother Roger on stage.

Madball played third - after Sick of it All and before Murphy's law. Harley's War opened the show. Agnostic Front headlined.

Lily Allen @ Hiro Ballroom, NYC | pics

This show was supposed to be mediocre. The blogosphere should be full of nasty comments today - about how terrible Lily Allen was live, and how she should stay in the studio where she belongs. But I doubt it will be. How could it be? She was fantastic - both in talent and awkward stage presence - well maybe she was a little nervous, but what 21-year old wouldn't be while playing to their first-ever NYC crowd full of industry and critics and Americans - New Yorkers even?
I'm not saying she's "the next Arcade Fire". I'm just saying that based on past bad experiences with similar artists, she exceeded expectations. In fact she was everything I hoped Lily Allen would be - plus a band with horns - and she's just getting started. OK, the show was short - way too short (especially for the price) - like 6 or 7 songs - and the end of Smile was a little messed up too (details, details) --- overall: great. I'll definitely be making an effort to see her again next time I get the chance (just please Lily play more songs!).

The show was Tuesday night, October 10, 2006 @ Hiro Ballroom in NYC.

Talking Heads (impersonators) playing CBGB Thursday
I guess the real Talking Heads wouldn't do it so they got the next best thing. The last ever Thursday night at CBGB (October 12, 2006) is a $20 show by "Losers Lounge Tribute to Talking Heads". No word yet on whether David Byrne will make an appearance. Video from Loser Lounge's October 7th Joe's Pub show below, but first a word from our sponsors (copy and pasted from CB's website):
Please note: On October 31st our Club at 315 Bowery will close until we re-open again probably in Las Vegas. However, our online store and office/store on Broadway and Bond, NYC will remain open.

Tower Records closing

"Tower Records has played its last tune. On Friday, after a 29-hour auction, most of the bankrupt music retailer's assets were sold to liquidation firm Great American Group, which bid $134.3 million. The company outbid Albany, N.Y.-based retailer Trans World Entertainment by a mere $500,000." [Washington Post]

Google buys YouTube for 1.65 billion
"Would Google be crazy to buy Youtube. No doubt about it. Moronic would be an understatement of a lifetime." [Mark Cuban]
---
"Google Inc. announced that it has agreed to acquire YouTube, the consumer media company for people to watch and share original videos, for $1.65 billion in a stock-for-stock transaction. Following the acquisition, YouTube will operate independently to preserve its successful brand."
Press release continued below...
The acquisition combines one of the largest and fastest growing online video entertainment communities with Google's expertise in organizing information and creating new models for advertising on the Internet. The combined companies will focus on providing a better, more comprehensive experience for users interested in uploading, watching and sharing videos, and will offer new opportunities for professional content owners to distribute their work to reach a vast new audience.
"The YouTube team has built an exciting and powerful media platform that complements Google's mission to organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful," said Eric Schmidt, ceo of Google. "Our companies share similar values; we both always put our users first and are committed to innovating to improve their experience. Together, we are natural partners to offer a compelling media entertainment service to users, content owners and advertisers."
"Our community has played a vital role in changing the way that people consume media, creating a new clip culture. By joining forces with Google, we can benefit from its global reach and technology leadership to deliver a more comprehensive entertainment experience for our users and to create new opportunities for our partners," said Chad Hurley, ceo/co-founder of YouTube. "I'm confident that with this partnership we'll have the flexibility and resources needed to pursue our goal of building the next-generation platform for serving media worldwide."
When the acquisition is complete, YouTube will retain its distinct brand identity, complementing Google's own video business. YouTube will continue to be based in San Bruno, California, and all YouTube employees will remain with the company.
The number of Google shares to be issued in the transaction will be determined based on the 30-day average closing price two trading days prior to the completion of the acquisition. Both companies have approved the transaction, which is subject to customary closing conditions and is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2006.
