Yankees: 0 || Tigers 7
DOWNLOAD: Talkin' Baseball (Yankees Version) (MP3)

As a New Yorker I can't help but become a sports fan every year during baseball playoffs. Right now we've got the Yankees and Mets fighting their way to the World Series, but as I write this the Yankees are down 7-to-nothing in what could turn out to be their last game of the season. Sucks.
Hey, the Village Voice is talking about sports, why can't I. Don't worry I won't start hanging out with American Idols.

I know some of you are sick of hearing about Sufjan, and from some of the comments left on this site, apparently some of you don't even approve of the wings. I loved them, but Sufjan is not the first one to show up on stage as an angel, bird or insect. I compiled some photos....

NY Press: Battle of the Bands & Best of Manhattan
"BEST NEW ANNOYING HOMEGROWN MUSIC TREND"
"Hip-hop began in the South Bronx with plenty of energy and originality, but lately it’s grown stale. The 'hip' has mostly 'hopped' off into the history books. Reggae suffers from the same problem: beat for beat, we’ve heard it all before—well, most of it anyway. Thanks to reggaeton, the two styles have merged under the same heading to form an unbelievably bland and repetitive new category of music. Sure, the Dem Bow beat, around which the reggaeton rhythm centers, gets the booties bouncing, and that Daddy Yankee song 'Gasolina' is too damn catchy for its own good; but if we have to wake up one more time to those monotonous thumps blasting outside our windows on a Saturday morning from speakers hooked up to the bicycle of a passer-by, heads will roll." [NY PRess - The Best of Manhattan]
And speaking of free NYC weekly papers and Raggaeton.
Also - The NY Press is having a battle of the bands. Entries must be in by October 20th. Flyer below...

"Just a quick reminder that Built to Spill's Doug Martsch will be stopping by Other Music to play a solo set at 4:30 P.M. this afternoon, Friday, October 6th. We've been told that he won't be performing any BTS songs but that we might hear some Woodie Guthrie covers! Regardless, we're thrilled that he's dropping by during his band's three-night stand at Irving Plaza. As always, our in-stores are free but capacity is limited. We hope to see you in a few hours."

BOOK
"...journalist Beeber does a commendable job of illuminating the Jewish backgrounds of many of punk's pioneers, including Joey Ramone (Jeffrey Hyman), Tommy Ramone (Tamas Erdelyi), as well as Lou Reed, Lenny Kaye, Blondie's Chris Stein, CBGB owner Hilly Kristal right up to the heir-apparent to the Jewish-punk crown, the Beastie Boys." Safra Hall, New York City - "Join us for a look at the fascinating New York Jewish origins of Punk. Our panel of famous figures from the music scene will address Punk’s ironic humor, leftist political engagement, and concern with the common man, among other topics. The Heebie-Jeebies of the title is more than just a joke then— it is an expression of the nervous 'shpilke' ridden nature of Punk." [$5 - DECEMBER 6, 2006]

SHARA WORDEN AS MY BRIGHTEST DIAMOND @ TOWN HALL | OCT 1, 2006

Shara Worden and band (string section included), aka My Brightest Diamond, were such wonderful openers that I would have been happy to leave before headliner Sufjan even took the stage (I'm happy I didn't though).
My Brightest Diamond played about a 45-minute set including an awesome full-band+special-guest-beatboxer cover of Prince's When Doves Cry (she's been known to do it solo too) (and she did it at Joe's Pub - get the MP3).
Then Shara came back to join Sufjan and band as a butterfly for the rest of the show - so did her string section.
SHARA WORDEN AS BUTTERFLY

She was the only regular member of Sufjan's 12-person band that I recognized. What happened to Katrina Kerns? Sufjan dedicated a song to her -- one where she appeared in the video playing in the background -- I think she was in the audience.

SHARA WORDEN ON THE SCREEN

If you're going to see Sufjan, get there early for Shara.
Get the MP3 of Shara's hip-hop collaboration with Jedi Mind Trick.
All photos in this post by Wes. More on his Flickr here and here, and even more photos he took of Shara can be seen the BV interview he conducted with her.

The Benson Interruption w/ David Cross @ UCB
"The Benson Interruption - No, it's not the latest Robert Ludlum novel, it's a show where comedian Doug Benson (The Marijuana-logues, VH1's Best Week Ever) invites his fancy, big-name, professional stand-up pals to the stage, but then interrupts whenever he feels like it. Recommended by Time Out New York, it's a bouillabaisse of awkwardness and fun!" [@ UCB NYC - Oct 23, 2006] (thx Klaus)

ALUMINIUM, is an album of avant garde orchestral recordings of music written by Jack White of The White Stripes
"ALUMINIUM, is an album of avant garde orchestral recordings of music written by Jack White of The White Stripes."
Press release continued below...
"It was recorded between August 2005 and February 2006 at Intimate Studios in Wapping (London), using a specially assembled orchestra comprising many of the UK’s finest young classical musicians.
The album will be available exclusively through the Aluminium website as a numbered limited edition of 3,333 CDs, 999 LPs and an unlimited download format with electronic booklet. There will also be an exclusive Aluminium toy available on the site. The album and toy will be available to pre-order from November 6th 2006.
Long time White Stripes collaborator, Rob Jones, created a series of 10 images to accompany the album. These images will be printed up as cards and packaged with both the CD and LP formats. In addition to this, the LP format will include a section of an original Rob Jones silk screen print.
The images are available to view on the Aluminium MySpace site, and as part of a wider Rob Jones exhibition which is currently showing at the Richard Goodall Gallery in Manchester.
On hearing Aluminium, choreographer Wayne McGregor included tracks from the album in a new piece that he is putting together for the Royal Ballet. The piece will be performed at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden this November."

Happy Hold Steady Decemberists day
DOWNLOAD: A podcast by the Hold Steady (MP3)

Two of my favorite bands put out CD's today, so happy Hold Steady Decemberists day. It's just too bad their latest live show situation didn't work out so well -- The Hold Steady played Irving Plaza while I was at Sufjan (not to mention while others were at the Mountain Goats). The Decemberists' next show is at the too-big Hammerstein Ballroom in the middle of the too-busy CMJ.

BECK, IMOGEN HEAP, TV ON THE RADIO AND GYM CLASS HEROES TO PERFORM AT THE 2006 “mtvU WOODIE AWARDS”
Critically Acclaimed College Favorites Take the Stage October 25th at Roseland Ballroom in NYC; Premieres o mtvU & mtvU.com November 2nd, “Woodies” Special on MTV November 4th
Two Players in “Woodies” Camera Phone Scavenger Hunt to Get All-Access Photo Passes to this Year’s Show
New York, NY – October 3, 2006 – mtvU, MTV’s 24-hour college network, today announced performers for the 2006 “mtvU Woodie Awards” – the only awards honoring the music voted best by the college audience. An all-star lineup of established and up-and-coming artists are confirmed to perform at the third annual mtvU “Woodies,” including Beck, Imogen Heap, TV on the Radio and Gym Class Heroes. The live concert event will take place October 25th at Roseland Ballroom in New York City, with the mtvU on-air and online premiere set for November 2nd at 8pm ET, and mtvU.com simultaneously debuting the entire show on demand. A special half-hour version of the “mtvU Woodie Awards” will premiere on MTV November 4th at 10pm ET, and an encore performance will follow on MTV2 November 5th at 11pm ET. Additional performers and presenters will be announced in the coming weeks.
Performing at the “Woodies” represents a natural culmination for all of this year’s acts, as each has been hoisted up by college students and celebrated on mtvU. Beck is a past “mtvU Woodie Award” nominee and his videos have been mainstays on the channel since it launched. Imogen Heap’s breakout hit “Hide and Seek” debuted on mtvU and mtvU.com in January and has been one of the most streamed songs on the site this year. mtvU has been behind TV on the Radio since the band’s early days, when “Staring at the Sun,” from their first EP, was placed in heavy rotation on the channel given heavy college student demand. More recently, mtvU featured a behind-the-scenes look at the making of “Wolf Like Me,” the lead video from the group’s critically acclaimed release, “Return to Cookie Mountain.”
Gym Class Heroes have been one of the biggest success stories on mtvU this year. In February, the Pete Wentz-signed five piece hip hop band was selected for the inaugural mtvU “Freshmen Five,” which each semester names the five acts poised to ride college student support to mainstream success. The group has since been featured on several mtvU new music series, including “Backstage Pass” and “Dean’s List,” and holds the record for the biggest music video premiere to date on mtvU.com.
Additionally, mtvU today announced the launch of the Snagu mtvU “Woodies” party, which will offer two lucky camera phone photographers an unforgettable “Woodies” experience. Snagu is a camera phone-based scavenger hunt developed by students from NYU with the backing of a $25,000 mtvU and Cisco Systems “Digital Incubator” grant. In the game, players receive a text message with a “tag,” scramble to shoot the best image and send it into a community site where college students vote for their favorites. For the Snagu mtvU “Woodies” party, college students will snap “Woodies”-related shots between today and October16th, and two of the players will be selected to attend this year’s show. These two will get all-access photo credentials for the 2006 “Woodies,” square off in an all day photo scavenger hunt, and have their photos published on mtvU.com. For more information on how to play, please visit mtvU.com or Snagu.com.
Top nominees for the 2006 “mtvU Woodie Awards” include Arctic Monkeys and Imogen Heap, who garnered three nods each and are competing in the “Breaking Woodie” (Best Emerging Artist) and “Streaming Woodie” (Most Streamed) categories. Eleven other artists, including Atmosphere, Gym Class Heroes, Hellogoodbye, Nightmare of You, Plain White T’s, Taking Back Sunday, The Academy Is and The Fray followed with two nominations each. Nearly fifty emerging and influential artists have been nominated for the 2006 “Woodies,” representing the music that college students lived their lives to this year. All college students are encouraged to log on to mtvU.com, make their voices heard, and vote for their favorites – either online or via any of mtvU’s Mobile partners – before the deadline of October 20th.
mtvU will host an online chat with “Woodie”-nominated artists Feist, HelloGoodbye and other nominees on Tuesday, October 10th at 3pm ET / noon PT. All interested journalists are invited to log onto www.cpnewslink.com five minutes prior to the scheduled start time to participate.
College students have helped establish the “mtvU Woodie Awards” as a crystal ball for the music about to break big, helping their favorite artists “graduate” to MTV2, MTV and mainstream success – including major record sales, sold out tours and accolades at other award shows. Some of the most notable success stories from the past two years include Fall Out Boy, the Killers, Matisyahu and the Afters, all of which saw their careers skyrocket after the “Woodies.”
For full information on the 2006 “mtvU Woodie Awards,” including nominees, programming, online games, ways to win a trip to this year’s show, exclusive interviews with nominated artists and music videos from all of this year’s nominees, please visit mtvU.com.
The third-annual “mtvU Woodie Awards” is sponsored by Citicards, Ford College Student Purchase Program, Taco Bell, Sony PSP, Garnier Fructis and T-Mobile.

Bluetones' shows cancelled
The band sent out this note:
It is with great regret that The Bluetones are forced to announce the post-ponement of their planned shows in New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Toronto, Sydney and Melbourne. The band were looking forward to playing these shows but due to circumstances over which we have had no control, are not in a position to fulfil these commitments.
Due to legal reasons it cannot be discussed here the exact nature of what has caused the cancellations, but rest assured the picture will be made clear for everybody as soon we have the full facts in front of us.
Again, I can only stress that this was not a decision that was taken by the band, so much as made for, and unbeknownst to, us.
I cannot properly express the heartbreak all of this is causing us, and apoligize sincerely for any dis-appointment felt by people who have already purchased tickets for these shows. We will try to re-schedule as soon as possible, although that is probably small consolation right now.
As it stands we may well be able to play the scheduled gig in Japan, we are trying to salvage that this week, but if there is any change there will be immediate notification.
I'm so sorry to everyone, but we intend to bounce right back from this and get out to the cities we have so looked forward to playing for the best part of this year, as soon as possible.
We feel like we've been kicked in the teeth....love Mark. x x x
(thx Lee)

"Sao Paulo's Curumin (aka Luciano Nakata Albuquerque) will be making his first major New York performance tonight performing songs from his debut album Achados e Perdidos (Quannum Projects/2005), and backed by his band from Brazil. His music recalls 70s samba funk at its best, peppered with afro-beat, dub and modern flourishes of jazz, funk, and hip hop." [Joe's Pub]

Oct 6 - Lotus Festival-Bloomington IN Bloomington, IN
Oct 7 - Lotus Festival-Bloomington IN Bloomington, IN
"The 70's style, easy-going samba funk is wonderfully uplifting, but is made much more contemporary by the skratches, gritty electric keys and basslines, and a sound that clearly understands the important developments between that era and this one." [Music For Robots]

Molly Neuman on Ted Leo's new album
"...Anyway, La Zorra De Suerte = Lucky Bitch and right now I’m the luckiest because I’m sitting in a beautiful barn studio in Massachusetts listening to Ted Leo record his new album and it’s making me crazy with excitement. So far they have 14 songs tracked and he’s working on guitars and we’ll see how many make it onto the record but it is sounding so incredible and uplifting and danceable and smart and important. The studio has horses and hot tub and a SAUNA and the rolling stones have written songs here....." [Simple Social Graces - Molly Neuman] (thx Recovering Donnaholic)
