new Voxtrot EP & MP3 --- touring soon too

DOWNLOAD: Voxtrot - Trouble (new MP3)

Voxtrot

As they did with Gorilla Vs. Bear and Chromewaves, PlayLouderRecordings (the new Beggars label) was nice enough to hand over this advance MP3 (see above) from Voxtrot's upcoming 3-song Playlouder debut. "Your Biggest Fan" is out November 7th, and can be pre-ordered for just $4.00 from Insound. Spend $26 more to get free shipping.

I have the whole EP, and like most of Voxtrot's songs - I didn't care for it at first, but the songs quickly grew on me to the point where parts of them got stuck on repeat inside my head.

At least one of the EP songs was debuted by Ramesh (yes, Ramesh!!) at the party I threw at Syrup room in June. The Ballet also played that show, and as previously noted, Ramesh appears on the Ballet's new album. The Ballet are also opening one of the two shows Voxtrot has coming up in NYC:

@ Bowery Ballroom, NYC
Nov 6: Voxtrot w/ Annuals and Finally Punk (tix)
Nov 7: Voxtrot w/ Mahogany and The Ballet (tix)

Voxtrot also appear on a new CD called "the kids at the club - An Indiepop compilation".

Annuals are also playing a BV show on November 4th.

The Dictators @ CBGB's 3rd-to-last night

DOWNLOAD: Blondie live @ 2005 Save CBGB Rally in WSP (MP3) (pics)

The Dicators played CBGB Friday October 13th, 2006 - the last-ever Friday night show at CBGB's, and the first of a two-night run for the reunited 70's NYC punk band. The club closes forever Sunday night October 15th with a performance by Patti Smith.

I wasn't there Friday night, but "Adam" was nice enough to leave his review in the comments. I republished it below...

THE DICATORS backstage @ CBGB. NYC | OCT 13, 2006 (CRED)
The Dicators @ CBGB

----

I am not a big fan of nostalgia. When I look at the closing of CBGB, I don't feel too bad for Hilly as he is easily making millions a year in selling T-shirts in the malls of America. I also don't really believe in the idea of recreating CBGB in Las Vegas although it does make some sick sense. Imagine Joey Ramone slot machines combined with the sound of punk metal. Hell, I would go check it out when I am in Vegas.

Still the place for me was not as important as lets say the Bottom Line or the Capitol Theatre. There were folks there in the 70's who went every night. I was not one of them. But I was there often enough to appreciate the scenery and the music. It was part of my youth, my rebellious youth. I was into the Ramones, Dictators and Dead Boys along with stuff like Bruce. I remember the first time I saw the Ramones at CBGB and I got it like that. I got the weirdness, and the feeling of being disaffected along with the humor. They were brilliant in their prime as were the Dead Boys who were the most underrated live band out of that scene. A friend and I discussed a show they did at Town Hall as part of a record convention and a couple of people joined us in the discussion. All agreed it was an incredible show.

So I sold my Social Distortion ticket and went on line at CBGB around 7:15. Ran into my friend Mike F. who knows everyone from the CB scene and who has millions of stories which usually ends with Stiv Bators mooning someone. I also ran into Helen Wheels' brother who was also tight with everyone and he showed me a picture of his sister in a book about Jewish Punk Rockers that was being released in a party at CB Gallery. Helen was an important part of Blue Oyster Cult (co-writing some songs with the band) as well as performing at CBGB often in the late 70's. Her brother told us so many great stories including one of Patti Smith seducing a young Jackson Browne (or it might have been the other way around) I told him he has to write a book.

By the time we got in, it was about 8:50. CBGB is really a shithole and has changed little in the last 33 years. We went right to the front of the stage and stayed there all night. The Bullys were the first band on as they are really known as the band who lost their their guitarist and leader when 9/11 happened as he was a fireman who lost his life when the buildings collapsed. But as I wrote last month when the Continental closed, they are a rarity in that they are a local band with a great singer. They performed a quick half hour set with songs about fast food and fighting which is what you would expect from a punk band.

As we were waiting for the Sic F**ks, I realized it was a reunion. Sal C who is the Dictators archivist was there, Camilia S. who I worked with for a couple of years was wearing her original Dictators jacket from the Bloodbrothers album cover, Dave Z. and Marc S. was there and they are guys who I have known for 25 years as we went to Bruce shows together. We all lied about how good we looked (actually it was not a lie as everyone is doing well) and the many nameless folks who I know from the NY concert scene. Just a major party.

The Sic F**ks (who I will refer to as SF) came on and I was speechless for a moment. Tish and Snooky were their backup singers wearing garter belts (and looking good for middle age women) along with the band wearing dresses and garters. Middle age men should not wear garter belts, but lo and behold they did. The lead singer is a paunchy short balding guy. But they kicked ass last night. Russell the lead singer was diving into the audience and doing somersaults on stage while the band was grinding with the backup singers. Damn good set. Punky with elements of funk (they also had a clarinet player).

By now, it is around 11:30 and word gets to us that there is still a line outside of CB's.

Ah, the Dictators. I have waxed powerful words and ascribed many qualities to them that folks who don't get them don't understand. Over the last 10 years, they have been my favorite band since I rediscovered them at a Tom Clark benefit at Brownies in 1997. I went to see Patti but they headlined and absolutely were stunning. I have pretty much caught every NYC area gig since.

Their last gig was at the Little Steven Garage Festival where they were the best band that day. Mike was working backstage taking photos and told me stories of people coming up to him and asking him who they were as they could not believe how good they were. They foolishly lost the momentum from the disagreement between members of the band and did not perform since as a full band. The last time they played CBGB, it was for two nights to film a DVD and the performances were disappointing and the material was not released.

CB's by now is packed as the band comes on and storms into "New York, New York" with the opening lyrics of, "Smoking Marijuana, watching Channel Five" and then goes into "The Party Starts Now". Dick Manitoba is in great voice having trimmed down a couple of pounds since the almost Dics performed at the last night at the Continental.

Tonight the band is a five piece as Scott Kempner is in from LA. He was part of the original band but left around 2002 to move to the West Coast and the band performed as a four piece with the exception of the Little Steven gig. He is playing rhythm which allows Ross The Boss, who is the best unknown guitarist in America (In Europe he is revered for his work with Man Of War) to do lead.

The band rehearsed for two nights and are better than they should have been given those circumstances. They go into Master Race Rock which is off the first album which came out in 1973 and has these lyrics:

Hippies are squares with long hair
And they don't wear no underwear
Country Rock is on the wane
I don't want music, I want pain!

Dictators can swing
Make you dance and sing
Cause an oil spill
You don't know us, but you will!

We're the members of the master race
Got no style, and we got no grace
Sleep all night, sleep all day
Nothing good on t.v. anyway

Gasoline shortage won't stop me now, Oh no!

We've reached a higher spiritual plane
That is so high, I can't explain
We tell jokes to make you laugh
We play sports so we don't get fat

We can sweat and stink
We can eat and drink
Don't do what we're told
And we're scared of growing old!

We're the members of the master race
We don't judge you by your face

Lyrics written by young guys who loved White Castle and who still eat them. Dick does an intro before "Who Will Save Rock And Roll" talking about how good things have to end. How the Fillmore is an office building and a story about how he used water from the toilet at CBGB to do heroin. Hey, if he can survive that he can survive anything.

I fall to my knees
and look to the sky
Who will save rock and roll?

Murray The K is not here today
so who will save rock and roll?

Every protest singer
every guitar slinger
every punk rock sinner sells his soul

My generation is not the salvation
so who will save rock and roll

I saw The Stooges, covered with bruises
who will save rock and roll?

every mercenary
three chord revolutionaries
choose your side and choose it well

June 1st, 67 something died and went to heaven
I wish Sgt Pepper
never taught the band to play

my generation
is not the salvation
so who will save,
who will save
tell me who will save
rock and...... roll

The place goes goes insane as Ross goes into the riff for "Sonic Reducer". Dick looks up to the sky in memory of Stiv and the band starts to talk about the ones who are no longer with us who came out of CBGB, Joey, Johnny, Dee Dee, Johnny Thunders, Jerry Nolan. "Sonic Reducer" is ridiculous as Ross is playing lead which is incredibly fast and melodic. Keep in mind that he is two inches from my face. We are all sweating by now.

They play a couple of more songs and everyone is exhausted. It is 1:20 and I am going to the infamous bathroom which in order to get to you have to pass the cubicles that pass for dressing rooms. The band is greeting everyone and taking pictures and signing autographs.

An amazing night and for me they were the best band in the world last night. I also get to do it again tonight.

Adam

David Byrne skips Loser's Lounge for Jenny Lewis

DOWNLOAD: Talking Heads - Once In a Lifetime (MP3)

"Loser’s Lounge is one of those New York City treasures that help make fighting through the crowded sidewalks and the rest of the daily hassles we face worthwhile." [The Villager]

Talking Heads

I have nothing but love for the Loser's Lounge, but of course there's gonna be some backlash when people find out that, instead of the Beastie Boys, Television, Blondie, or even David Byrne and his real Talking Heads playing the fourth-to-last night ever at CBGB, CBGB's books your Talking Heads tribute act instead. Some thought maybe the real David Byrne would show up anyway - maybe to join them on stage for a song or two. Didn't happen. In fact, according to numerous commenters, David was enjoying himself further uptown at the Jenny Lewis and the Watson Twins show at Town Hall.

GLENNIS WAS AT TOWN HALL TOO
"I then went and watched the most adorable and wonderful concert at Town Hall; Jenny Lewis & The Watson Twins. I'm absolutely head over heels in love in a non-lesbo (but totes Glesbo) fashion with JL. Watch this video of her as a teen being interviewed by the crappy show "Teen Set" in 1991. She tries on hats and jumps on a trampoline."

MICHAEL WENT TO CBGB
"The band last night was the Loser's Lounge - a group that did covers of Talking Heads, Brian Eno, etc... but each song had a new singer who had once graced the CBGB's stage. I didn't know a lot of the names but their stories were all similar, 'I played here back in 1981! I can't believe it's over.'

Above photos by Bao.

Loser's Lounge next gigs will be in tribute to Elton John - Dec. 14, 15 & 16 @ Joe's Pub.

David Byrne recently saw Joanna Newsom and Under Byen while at Pop Montreal. Chart Attack says Under Byen was drowned out by crowd chatter.

Listen to the October 15th Jenny Lewis concert on NPR. You can also listen to Built to Spill.

The Watson Twins (sans Jenny) are opening for Oakley Hall and Shooter Jennings at Irving Plaza on November 4th. It's part of CMJ. You may remember a post about Shooter at Bonnarroo.

Rock Band Name Origins

DURAN DURAN
Duran Duran

B-52's - The beehive hairstyle popular in the 1950's (worn by band members) was called a B-52 after a type of large US Air Force bomber plane with that designation.

Duran DuranBEASTIE BOYS - According to Michael Diamond, BEASTIE stands for Boys Entering Anarchistic Stages Towards Internal Excellence.

BLUE CHEER - 60's nickname for high-quality LSD, and coincidentally a brand of laundry detergent (the band used the detergent idea on their album cover with "New, Improved, Blue Cheer" - surprised they didn't get sued for it. (tour dates)

DAVID BOWIE - born David Jones, he changed his name to avoid confusion with David (Davy) Jones of THE MONKEES.

CREED - This popular Florida band was named after former bassist Brian Marshall's earlier band Mattox Creed.

DURAN DURAN - named after a character in the Jane Fonda movie Barbarella.

GUNS 'N' ROSES - originally two bands L.A. GUNNS and HOLLYWOOD ROSES. Hollywood Roses was headed by Axl Rose, Tracii Guns headed the other band which also featured Slash Izzy. The two frequented clubs and played there and were friends.

RADIOHEAD - Named after a Talking Heads' song called "Radio Head."

RAMONES - Paul McCartney used to call himself Paul Ramone. The Ramones all use the last name Ramone even though it's not their given name.

TALKING HEADS - probably from the video jargon for a camera shot showing only the head & shoulders of a person. Newscasters are usually shown this way and it makes for boring TV. Another story says they were inspired by a military experiment involving talking mannequin heads.

U2 - Three possibilities: 1) A type of spy plane used by the United States in the 1960's - made famous when Gary Powers' U2 plane was shot down over Russia and he was taken as a
prisoner during the Cold War. 2) U2 as in "you too" referring to the audience and its role in the musical experience 3) a U2 is an unemployment form in Ireland (see UB40)

Bastard & Hippocamp Ruins Pet Sounds (MP3 mashups)

Pet Sounds

THERE'S THIS
"Pet sounds is an album that everyone should own, study, cherish, and enjoy. Hippocamp Ruins Pet Sounds is an open-ended experiment conducted out of reverence, curiosity, and awareness of the sobering fact that you can't improve upon perfection."

AND THERE'S THIS
"Here is Pet Sounds, the mythic album by the Beach Boys, mashed up with contemporary (and some older) pop/rock... artists. This way of mixing complete stranger songs together is often called Bastard Pop, if you ever asked yourself why I gave my project this name." (via Cosmic Cowgirl, Idolator, and Gorilla vs. Bear)

new Voice not as big Hold Steady fans

The Voice Chris Ott's new "Blogwash" column is one of the better things to happen to the Voice lately. I may not always agree with him -- I may even be too dumb to understand what he's talking about, but his seemingly-informed controversial analyses of hot bands are at least thought provoking and interesting reads. Last time he did the Pipettes. This time he talks about The Hold Steady's "subservient debt to Bruce Springsteen", and doesn't seem to agree with "Pitchfork (which I contributed to for years)" for awarding "their new album Boys and Girls in America the site's best rating of the year so far, a 9.4 out of 10."

during-CMJ Wednesday day show (main stage) lineup

CSSThunderbirds are Now

I'm psyched to FINALLY announce the first of four 2006 during-CMJ BrooklynVegan day show lineups. I actually only have three shows, but the first one is Wednesday November 1st at Pianos where there will be separate acts playing upstairs and downstairs. Here's the noon-5pm DOWNSTAIRS (main stage) LINEUP:

* CSS
* Thunderbirds are Now!
* Land of Talk
* The Little Ones
* Nicolai Dunger
* Loney, Dear
* Sure Juror

This show is free, and there should be some free alcohol, and food even too. There might be an RSVP. Loney Dear and Nicolai are friends and will hopefully collaborate on stage during the course of their two sets. 21+ (sorry 'bout that). More details TBA as I figure them out.

----

Rounder RecordsThis show was partially made possible by Rounder Records - home of Nicolai Dunger. Home also of Vienna Teng, The Damnwells, and Madeleine Peyroux. I'm glad to have Nicolai playing this show, and I'm glad to have Rounder Records as a sponsor. Did you know that "Rounder was one of the very first labels to become involved with compact discs, in 1985"? Neither did I.

----

CSS and Loney, Dear are also playing the now-sold-out Sub Pop showcase.

3 more linueps + DJs & hosts + more sponsors TBA.

Tenacious D | 2006 Tour Dates & presale

When I saw Tenacious D at Roseland (1/22/02) it was great, but of course it was still big stupid Roseland. I can only imagine the shows at Irving Plaza (8/30/99), Bowery Ballroom (4/18/00), and Town Hall (9/8/01) were better (especially Bowery!), and I can only imagine that a Tenacious D show in a stadium would be infinitely worse.

The presale for Tenacious D December 1st at MSG starts October 12th @ noon. Password: BADESTINY (thx KK, Andrew & TM)

It might be worth going if they do anything as cool visually as Roger Waters, though I think I'll just stick with the movie.

Neil Hamburger is opening. That's prety sweet for him and those who do go. I forgot to post a review of his recent funny show at Pianos.

All dates below...

Madball was a sweet last minute addition to the last hardcore matinee show at CBGB's on Sunday October 8, 2006. Vocalist Freddy kept saying he never thought he'd play on the CBGB stage AGAIN. That was before his final-final appearance which was when he later joined his big brother Roger on stage.

Lily Allen @ Hiro Ballroom, NYC | pics

Lily Allen @ Hiro Ballroom

This show was supposed to be mediocre. The blogosphere should be full of nasty comments today - about how terrible Lily Allen was live, and how she should stay in the studio where she belongs. But I doubt it will be. How could it be? She was fantastic - both in talent and awkward stage presence - well maybe she was a little nervous, but what 21-year old wouldn't be while playing to their first-ever NYC crowd full of industry and critics and Americans - New Yorkers even?

I'm not saying she's "the next Arcade Fire". I'm just saying that based on past bad experiences with similar artists, she exceeded expectations. In fact she was everything I hoped Lily Allen would be - plus a band with horns - and she's just getting started. OK, the show was short - way too short (especially for the price) - like 6 or 7 songs - and the end of Smile was a little messed up too (details, details) --- overall: great. I'll definitely be making an effort to see her again next time I get the chance (just please Lily play more songs!).

Please note: On October 31st our Club at 315 Bowery will close until we re-open again probably in Las Vegas. However, our online store and office/store on Broadway and Bond, NYC will remain open.

"Tower Records has played its last tune. On Friday, after a 29-hour auction, most of the bankrupt music retailer's assets were sold to liquidation firm Great American Group, which bid $134.3 million. Google buys YouTube for 1.65 billion

"Would Google be crazy to buy Youtube. No doubt about it. Moronic would be an understatement of a lifetime." [Mark Cuban]

---

"Google Inc. announced that it has agreed to acquire YouTube, the consumer media company for people to watch and share original videos, for $1.65 billion in a stock-for-stock transaction. Following the acquisition, YouTube will operate independently to preserve its successful brand."

Press release continued below...

The acquisition combines one of the largest and fastest growing online video entertainment communities with Google's expertise in organizing information and creating new models for advertising on the Internet. The combined companies will focus on providing a better, more comprehensive experience for users interested in uploading, watching and sharing videos, and will offer new opportunities for professional content owners to distribute their work to reach a vast new audience.

"The YouTube team has built an exciting and powerful media platform that complements Google's mission to organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful," said Eric Schmidt, ceo of Google. "Our companies share similar values; we both always put our users first and are committed to innovating to improve their experience. Together, we are natural partners to offer a compelling media entertainment service to users, content owners and advertisers."

"Our community has played a vital role in changing the way that people consume media, creating a new clip culture. By joining forces with Google, we can benefit from its global reach and technology leadership to deliver a more comprehensive entertainment experience for our users and to create new opportunities for our partners," said Chad Hurley, ceo/co-founder of YouTube. "I'm confident that with this partnership we'll have the flexibility and resources needed to pursue our goal of building the next-generation platform for serving media worldwide."

When the acquisition is complete, YouTube will retain its distinct brand identity, complementing Google's own video business. YouTube will continue to be based in San Bruno, California, and all YouTube employees will remain with the company.

The number of Google shares to be issued in the transaction will be determined based on the 30-day average closing price two trading days prior to the completion of the acquisition. Both companies have approved the transaction, which is subject to customary closing conditions and is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2006.

St VincentSt Vincent

If you haven't heard of St Vincent, then you probably don't read Gorilla Vs. Bear (or listen to his Sirius radio show). St Vincent is the solo project of Polyphonic Spree member Annie Clark, and she sings beautiful songs beautifully like the one linked above (more at her MySpace too).

I missed her last time she came to NYC. Hopefully I won't make the same mistake again when she's here in NYC TWICE this month - October 9th (TONIGHT) and October 23rd - both @ Pianos -- both with "strings and horns and drums".
