21 to drink, 21 to party -- the NYC nightlife summit

"The summit also touched on raising the age limit for entry everywhere to 21 (currently anyone 17 or older can enter any establishment with a liquor license that also serves food), which pleased the NYPD. Collins said, '[We] look forward to seeing such legislation pass.'" [Village Voice]

bullshit.

So would this screw up places like Sidewalk or other music venues? It's hard enough that so many great shows go to Mercury Lounge or Cake Shop or other 21+ venues without cutting young people out from all venues in the city!

Die in a war - 18
Elect the leader of the free world - 18
Drink a beer - 21

???

wait im confused. so places like the knitting factory will now be 21+ and all bowery shows will be raised to 21+? Or am I totally making myself worry?

come on guys, a couple of people were killed this year. SOMETHING has to be done!!

I think they should ban music, or at least maybe let the police decide which places can allow music. This could make us safer.

does this mean that the knitting factory all-ages shows have been illegal all along?

Posted by Anonymous | October 10, 2006 7:25 PM

This is ridiculous, seriously, just because one girl made bad decisions all people under 21 has to pay.

drinking age should be raised to 23 possibly

Not one of the club reps at that "summit" actually book live music regularly..none of them are concert venues...hopefully someone with some sense will represent the legimate music venues of NYC & show their side of things which paint a much different picture than the Roxy's & Spirit''s & Crobars, etc

also, re: matt

what an amazing perspective on the situation? how come nobody has ever brought up that point??

Posted by nick | October 10, 2006 11:24 PM

Maybe people from New Jersey should be banned from the city, that way theyh dont abduct little drunk teenagers and cut them up.

One more reason to move to Philly.

"currently anyone 17 or older can enter any establishment with a liquor license that also serves food"

"does this mean that the knitting factory all-ages shows have been illegal all along?"

And what about the shows at the Bowery Ballroom that are 18+? The Bowery doesn't serve food.

Methinks Tricia Romano has made a factual error.
