Mos Def playing w/ Hypnotic Brass Ensemble Sunday

"Mos Def will be sitting in with the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble at the Lions Den (214 Sullivan Street) this Sunday at 10pm". Sounds like what he's doing at Lincoln Center in 2007.

Sara Schaefer to host BrooklynVegan party | the DL

DOWNLOAD: Elvis Perkins - Mayday (MP3)

SARA SCHAEFER @ UCB, NYC | FEB 1, 2006 (CRED)
Sara Schaefer

You may know Sara Schaefer the comedian, who, as host of Video Gaga at NYC's UCB Theatre, has worked with musical acts like Elvis Perkins, Lisa Loeb, and Dujeous. You've seen her interviewed on Gothamist and gossiped about on the Apiary. And speaking of the Apiary - if you read it on a regular basis then you know by now that Sara Schaefer will also be the guest host at my free BrooklynVegan show @ The Annex in NYC on Saturday November 4th, 2006 (noon-5pm). There she'll be reunited on stage with Elvis Perkins -- full band list here.

I actually had no idea how busy Sara's been when I first asked her to do it. In fact, it wasn't until I found out about her performance alongside the Walkmen that I knew about her new gig at AOL. See her interview Regina Spektor, Frank Black and more at the DL.

Side note: Between the DL, their sweet downloadable "Interface" podcats, streaming albums, and their "indie" music blog (now called "spinner"), AOL seems to be using their money to slowly take over the online music world.

BrooklynVegan during-CMJ free show run down:

hosted by dave hill: (info)
* Wednesday November 1st, noon-5pm
* Friday November 3rd, noon-5:30pm

hosted by sara schaefer:
* Saturday November 4th, noon-5pm

hosted by liberated matter:
* Wednesday November 1st, noon-5:30pm

(full list of sponsors and free stuff TBA soon)

An article on music venues in the NY Times

Here are some highlights from the article....

crowdBowery Presents Capacities: "250-capacity Mercury to the 575-person Bowery to Webster Hall, at 1,400"

Gramercy Theater: "Live Nation also plans to start presenting concerts in January at the former Gramercy Theater on East 23rd Street, which will hold about 600." (this has been a rumor for a while)

Live Nation booking new Luna Lounge: "reopening by the end of the year in Williamsburg at 300 to 350 capacity, more than double its former size on Ludlow Street, where it closed last year."

Bowery Presents takes over Northsix: "It will be renovated, with upstairs balconies added, and is to open in the spring as the Music Hall of Williamsburg." (a few weeks ago someone tipped us to this in the comments, but Bowery Presents and Northsix both denied it when I contacted them)

The Box: "Another new Lower East Side club on the horizon is the Box, a 5,000-square-foot room on Christie Street whose owner, Simon Hammerstein — a grandson of Oscar — said he intended to open in the next two months with theater and music performances."

read the rest @ The NY Times.

Lady Sovereign @ The 2006 mtvU Awards, Roseland Ballroom, NYC | pics

Lady Sovereign @ The mtvU Awards

I was lucky enough to accidentally be standing next to Lady Sovereign for about ten minutes before she took the stage to introduce Gym Class Heroes. It was while they were announcing that she lost the "Most Original Artist" award to Gnarls Barkley, but I don't think she noticed.

My favorite performance of the night was just listening to her talk to everyone around us. Her "backstage" banter included a diss of Imogen Heap (who was also nominated in her category), and a lot of threats to the guy whose shoulders she was sitting/climbing on. On stage she refused to read from the teleprompter and claimed to be drunk.

Lady Sovereign @ The mtvU Awards

This all happened at the 2006 mtvU Awards @ Roseland Ballroom in NYC on Wednesday October 25th.

Jared Leto was there beating people up.

Lady Sov was also seen posing with Ghostface.

Last time I randomly ran into her was at SXSW.

With her new video recently reaching #1 on TRL, her MTV reach is already way beyond MTV's mtvU.

See her on tour.

2006 mtvU Woodies | Jared Leto vs Stereogum & Elijah Wood

FRED ARMISEN INTRODUCES TV ON THE RADIO
Jared Leto @ The Woodies

I was one of the many bloggers in attendance at this year's mtvU Awards @ Roseland Ballroom in NYC on Wednesday night (October 25, 2006). I wasn't live-blogging it, but I was taking pictures so I could blog about it right now.

Highlights included a 2-song performance each, by Beck and TV on the Radio, and entertaining presentations by Lady Sovereign, Ghostface Killah, Lupe Fiasco, Gogol Bordello's Eugene Hutz, and SNL comedian Fred Armisen (last year the real Lou Reed presented an award - this year the fake one).

JARED LETO WITH A WOODIE
Jared Leto @ The Woodies

Low points: the major-label dominated "College Students' Favorite Emerging Artists" nominee list and the resulting list of winners -- that includes Jared Leto's band 30 Seconds to Mars taking home the award for "best live action video" ("The music video that's so incredible, we'd watch it even without the music"). Admittedly I haven't even see the winning video, but it's so easy to hate the fact that Jared Leto is being awarded for his music, that I'll just go with it.

More importantly though -- the real Jared Leto 'live action' wasn't actually caught on tape (or was it?). And it came in the form of Angel Face's interaction with two prominent crowd members: one music-obsessed actor, and one (like myself) music-obsessed blogger. According to multiple sources, and while I wasn't looking, Jared Leto both started a fight with Elijah Wood AND injured Stereogum's blogging finger. Possibly due to an impending lawsuit, Stereogum's review of the show doesn't mention the account.

The awards air on TV and online in a few days.

Dave Hill to host two BrooklynVegan shows

You may remember performer, comedian & writer Dave Hill as a friend of Rufus Wainwright, Walter Schreifels & Fred Armisen, Moby, and Luna. Or you may just think of him as a fan of classic punk and metal. I like to think of him as the host of the first two free BrooklynVegan shows happening during CMJ this year.

Dave Hill hosts:
* Wednesday November 1st, noon-5pm
* Friday November 3rd, noon-5:30pm

Read Dave Hill's blog

Vitamin Water

MORE GOOD NEWS
Vitamin Water and Smart Water have agreed to supply some free drinks (for at least one of the shows). Plus, Rounder Records is sending some free CDs to give out, and Guitar World's gonna provide some reading material.

Stay tuned for the host announcement for the Saturday show.

Last year I did just one show. It was hosted by Aziz Ansari.

a pre-CMJ interview with CSS

CSS (cansei de ser sexy) are playing the free BrooklynVegan show @ Pianos on Wednesday November 1st @ 4:15 pm. Their official CMJ showcase is at Bowery Ballroom the next night.

Name and occupation?
Lovefoxxx, singer and song writter.

Is this your first time playing CMJ?
Yeahhhh baby.

What were you doing last year during CMJ?
Last year we had just released our album in brazil. So we were doing a bunch of interviews... As for me, I think I was putting a new wallpaper on my bedroom but since the paint underneath of it was glossy pink all the papers sticked out in a matter of 3 weeks.

What else do you plan on doing or seeing while you're in NYC?
Ira wants to buy a jacket at Opening Cerimony, Adri wants to find an apartment to move in, Doo (our manager, the 7th member) wants to go to Central Park, I want to have breakfast at Clinton's (clinton st.), Brown's (Hester st) and Dinner (brooklyn) and see a friend! The rest of the girls are somewhere else now.

Chavez

Both of the above MP3s come from the recently-released "super-deluxe re-mastered" Chavez compilation that includes, among other things, "two CDs plus DVD, two 28-page books, and the two original studio albums". Pitchfork recently gave it a 9.4. To promote said compilation, Chavez are getting back together to play some shows. These to be exact:

CHAVEZ | 2006 TOUR DATES
Sat Dec 2 - Otto Bar Baltimore, MD w/ Endless Boogie (tix)
Sat Dec 16 - Warsaw Brooklyn, NY w/ Endless Boogie (tix)
Sat Dec 30 - Slim's San Francisco, CA

If you're not familiar with this indie rock band who were "active in the New York club scene in the mid to late '90s", you probably at least heard of their frontman Matt Sweeney from such projects as Billy Corgan's Zwan and Bonnie Prince Billy's Superwolf.

Among the items in the curriculum are creating video public-service announcements, visiting a movie studio to see how many people may be harmed by film piracy, visiting a video-sharing website to identify which materials are copyrighted, and learning basic copyright law, according to the Los Angeles Times." Klaxons tour cancelled due to VISA issues

"The band was scheduled to go on its first U.S. mini-tour in early November, but were forced to cancel the shows when the members were denied visas due to the band's youth and its small recorded output. 'I guess it's something about not being able to have a visa unless you've been together for a certain period of time,' Reynolds says. We haven't even had our [one year] anniversary yet." [Pitchfork]

The Kooks @ Bowery Ballroom, NYC | pics

DOWNLOAD: Bob Marley - Jammin (MP3)

The Kooks played their first NYC show at Bowery Ballroom Monday night (October 23, 2006). Though they were lively and somewhat entertaining to watch on stage, I didn't really like the music. The whole reggae/funk thing they seem to be going for turned me off. And at the risk of sounding like I think I'm an expert, I'd say it wasn't done very well.

At least a couple hundred people in the crowd wouldn't agree with my negative assessment though - they were jumping up and down, singing along to every song, and screaming like the Beatles were in the building - I'm assuming most of them were, like the band, British (partly because I heard lots of accents all around me). Could be I'm too old, but I do love the Arctic Monkeys.

The Kooks @ Bowery Ballroom

Though the show was sold out, the room wasn't as packed as usual. That's probably because the guest list was huge and a bunch of people didn't show up.

Two of the young British band members were wearing CBGB t-shirts which I thought was a nice touch....

Qbertplaya enjoyed herself during their 40-45 minute set. As Bumpershine notes, "you can catch The Kooks on Saturday night (Oct 28) at Northsix and at a free in-store performance at Sound Fix on the same day at 3 PM."

My favorite Kooks song is sung by Lily Allen.

The last-minute "solo acoustic" Beck show at Angel Orensanz (an old beautiful synagogue) in NYC Sunday night (Oct 22, 2006) wasn't very solo at all (his whole band was there), but I guess you could call it acoustic. There were no puppets, but there was a Casio. It was really great.

"Nothing melts a jaded man's heart like the sound of a beautiful female voice singing songs of love, loss, and longing—even when they're being sung by a guy. Joel Thibodeau, a slight young man with a freakishly high-pitched (but gorgeous) voice who goes by the name of Death Vessel (which could also fall under the "Best Band Name" category), is one of the city's most talented singer-songwriters."
