An article on music venues in the NY Times
Here are some highlights from the article....
Bowery Presents Capacities: "250-capacity Mercury to the 575-person Bowery to Webster Hall, at 1,400"
Gramercy Theater: "Live Nation also plans to start presenting concerts in January at the former Gramercy Theater on East 23rd Street, which will hold about 600." (this has been a rumor for a while)
Live Nation booking new Luna Lounge: "reopening by the end of the year in Williamsburg at 300 to 350 capacity, more than double its former size on Ludlow Street, where it closed last year."
Bowery Presents takes over Northsix: "It will be renovated, with upstairs balconies added, and is to open in the spring as the Music Hall of Williamsburg." (a few weeks ago someone tipped us to this in the comments, but Bowery Presents and Northsix both denied it when I contacted them)
The Box: "Another new Lower East Side club on the horizon is the Box, a 5,000-square-foot room on Christie Street whose owner, Simon Hammerstein — a grandson of Oscar — said he intended to open in the next two months with theater and music performances."

anyone know anything about "Santa's Party House" at 100 Lafayette?
It was in this month's Blackbook. Seems to be a partnership between Spencer Sweeney and Andrew WK.

Interesting.
I miss the old Luna Lounge and Northsix is fine how it is.

I hope this translates into cheaper tickets prices.

"The Music Hall"?
Come freaking on. Could they come up with a more generic name? Like, "Place Where Music Is"? Even that sounds better.
Posted by jerry | October 27, 2006 11:16 AM
The more live Nation takes over smaller clubs the higher the ticket prices will likely be & you can be pretty sure ticketmaster will be involved as those two entities are pretty cozy....at the same time the venues hopefully will look and sound better...but with that comes a price..it seems like Bowery Presents & Live Nation are in a neck and neck race to see who can dominate the greater NYC venues.

no one is talking about how tonic is so damn close to closing its not even funny. the former ratner's parking lot is now this ginormous condo next door to little tonic. its got leaks in its ceiling again...there's no way this place is lasting another year.
Posted by sam | October 27, 2006 11:49 AM
The problem with all the new venues, is that they tend to be in Brooklyn. Blah.
Posted by Anonymous | October 27, 2006 12:02 PM
F*ck this!
Northsix is my favorite venue... and now they're gonna ruin it all.
I am so cries.
Posted by jason | October 27, 2006 12:24 PM
oh my god all these cool authentic down to earth clubs ruined by big corporations. i am crying. this renaming and shit, i bet now they will only have gentrified bands playing for gentrified audiences. i guess i have to get myself gentrified. does anyone know of a free gentrification workshop this weekend in bushwick area?
Posted by seymour, i am not really seymour | October 27, 2006 1:15 PM
Well Bowery Presents isnt exactly a HUGE corporation , they book & own The Mercury, The Bowery & book (but not own) Webster Hall
Thats still much smaller than the worldwide conglomerate Live Nation...
That being said .. I sort of prefer Irving Plaza (Live Nation) over Webster Hall (Bowery Presents)
Posted by Anonymous | October 27, 2006 1:34 PM
......The Music Hall of Williamsburg? OK, most people already know and love it as Northsix... aren't you supposed to try to keep the name so it doens't lose its familiarity? and BALCONIES at N6?? God this will suck...
Posted by drowned_in_milk | October 27, 2006 1:44 PM
Will it have parking?

Live nation is not a "conglomerate," they were spun off from clear channel and operate in the live event and venue managemnet business. They are considered a "small cap" company.
Posted by Anonymous | October 27, 2006 2:43 PM
Shame about northsix but a bigger shame that Webster, with it's overpriced drinks and overly-agressive bouncers, isn't changing hands.

Call them what you will ....& spin off or not...they are the single biggest live promoter on earth

true, but a "conglomerate" by defintion operates in many unrelated businesses!

can someone please tell somebody to PLEASE fix the floors at webster hall! please! and add more fire exits while they're at it. that place is a catastrophe waiting to happen.
Posted by Anonymous | October 27, 2006 3:10 PM
Off topic.
It looks like Andrew WK is playing with Matt Sweeney at Club Midway on 11/28. Tickets are available at ticketweb.
On topic. Club Midway is a great small venue in Manhattan. They re-did their sound system since being Scenic. And how do people feel about Sin-e?
Posted by muzik | October 27, 2006 3:17 PM
i like their bouncey floors!

We need more venues for bands to play their first shows. All my favorite dives are gone: C-Note, Charleston, Siberia (bar still open), Orange Bear, and so many others.

I LOVE BOWERY PRESENTS!!!!!!!!!!!!
Northsix has always sucked so hopefully they can make some improvements - and who can argue with balconies?

Yes, balconies. This actually should read VIP balconies folks.
Posted by bumpershine | October 27, 2006 5:17 PM
webster's biggest problem is the airhead girls behind the bar by the merch table. seems like every time i'm there (which isn't too often, thankfully) i get some model/bar trainee who doesn't know how to fetch a beer in under three minutes. i feel like saying, "look, princess, can you find someone who knows how to work a bar. i've only got two hours and i'm dying to give away $7 for a bottle of beer."
Posted by Anonymous | October 27, 2006 6:16 PM
I stopped going to Sin-e because the music volume is much too loud!!
Posted by Anonymous | October 27, 2006 6:17 PM
since they're going to be reconstructing northsix anyway, i wonder if there's any way for them to rid of those giant pillars that make it impossible to see anything.
Posted by Anonymous | October 27, 2006 7:27 PM
i don't understand those who seem to be in love with the current north six structure. sure, the staff have always seemed nice enough and the bands that are currently booked are great but those pillars are awful. the bleachers might be charming but much more can be done with the place. i only hope that it doesn't become a knitting factory bad-balcony-with-pillars set up. otherwise, i'm all for bowery presents taking over...
but yes, changing the name to music hall of williamsburg is weak. if they had to change the name, they could've done better than that.
Posted by Anonymous | October 28, 2006 1:05 AM
how about northseven?
Posted by Anonymous | October 28, 2006 1:28 AM
i would prefer Williamsburg Music Hall but that is nitpicking. Personally, i like the name. very timeless and understated. Also, it feels like a kindred spirit to the Bowery Ballroom, another simple name that reflects it's neighborhood and has an enduring quality.

As far as significant-sized venues, this is the end of independent venues in NYC. There is no longer any venues run by people that are musicians and care about independent art and music... but maybe you won't have columns to block your view anymore. woo hoo!
you people are disgusting...
Posted by Anonymous | October 28, 2006 11:43 AM
from what i've heard, Livenation OWNS the new Luna lounge. they aren't going to just be the promoter.
Posted by Anonymous | October 28, 2006 12:02 PM
Long live The Hook!
Posted by joly | October 28, 2006 12:54 PM
Now that live nation bought house of blues they'll no doubt open a house of blues in nyc.
Posted by Anonymous | October 28, 2006 2:25 PM
House of Blues can't get their act together in NYC. they have been trying for years.
Posted by Anonymous | October 28, 2006 3:32 PM
i think the worst pillar offender had to be tramps, but i still miss tramps.
Posted by heidinyny | October 28, 2006 3:35 PM
With Live Nation running the show, House of Blues will finally get their act together in nyc, even if they have to slap their name on one of Live Nation's current venues.

to anon who stated - "end of independent venues in NYC. There is no longer any venues run by people that are musicians and care"
where have you been the last year or longer -
Rockwood music hall is owned and operated by a musician - he runs the place - he personally handles the sound and the lighting and he books great indie musicians and more than all of the above -
after 15 plus years as a musician, he knows musicians and he cares

>>i would prefer Williamsburg Music Hall but that is nitpicking. Personally, i like the name. very timeless and understated
And it morphs nicely into "Williamsburg Music Hell" or "The Williamsburg Music Hole." MUCH better than "Northsux."
Posted by J | October 30, 2006 6:01 PM
Northsix sucks as-is. I like Bowery and Mercury Lounge, I hope they can fix that space so that it actually functions for concerts. C'mon, the garbage pail by the pillar? It's like a black hole sucking people in. But they should keep the name or just come up with something better than Music Hall. How can you get excited about going to the Music Hall?
Hopefully this means they will STOP booking shows at Webster Hall, $5 for bottled water and employees posted up in the bathroom when you get free cups of water at Bowery and Mercury.
And what's up with Warsaw? Why are they consistently booking shows there that I couldn't care less about? I love the Warsaw, it's beautiful inside and they even have food!
Posted by Aaronfromqueens | October 31, 2006 12:48 AM
you have a problem with a "garbage pail by the pillar"? you are an idiot Aaron.
I guess some people just want to complain, even if they can't think of something reasonable to complain about at the moment.

"I hope this translates into cheaper tickets prices."
^^^^
This is the dippiest thing I've ever read online.
It really hurts to watch this go on. It's the race to sell out! Everyone, do the Sub Pop Shuffle!

"you have a problem with a "garbage pail by the pillar"? you are an idiot Aaron."
Wow, okay, fine: When Northsix gets crowded, it looks like there is an empty spot right by the pillar. People wriggle their way over to it and then find out its a garbage can. So yes, seeking to escape the crush of people, i've almost fallen into this garbage, having been pushed by all the people moving towards it.
No, my problem isn't really with the garbage can, it's with the lack of open space in Northsix. A club that size should be able to have a better freedom of movement to and from the stage. The bleachers are a waste of space that work in concert with an inconveniently placed pillar (and frequent placement of a large trash bin at said pillar) to create a bottleneck.
Better than Knitting Factory, to be sure, but still shitty.

there's still southpaw
Posted by J | January 19, 2007 9:26 PM
yeah, at least there's still southpaw and the warsaw. i kinda love irving plaza too.
but hands down, worst venue i've ever seen is that new place, rebel in manhattan. a huge l-shaped room with horrible acoustics and weird cages on the wall. i saw dinosaur jr. there and whoever did their sound should've been smacked.
Posted by heidi | February 4, 2007 11:43 AM
Northsix was a great place to see a show. Who are these losers complaining about a trashcan? That is small potatoes relative to losing a valued independently owned venue. This flat out sucks.

"Rockwood has shows every night. Seriously, where have you been?"
Apparently not at Rockwood every night like you have. Tell your son he runs a great club, and it's fantastic to see a musician of his calibur giving back to the community.
