I mean... she is. Say what you want about the quality of her reportoire, but you can't deny her actual vocal talents.

You cannot so easily separate the repertoire from the artist's vocal instrument. If a perfectly capable singer chooses to sing pap, his/her voice, however *technically* capable, does not serve as a channel for emotional depth and intelligence (none of which aguilera possesses in sufficient quantities to be called greatest by anyone whose opinion matters). & this is the measure of a great vocalist -- one whose instrument channels the shit that actually moves us.
No single vocalist or musician that's ever been truly great has done so purely on technique alone. It's like an artist gifted enough to sketch, blindfolded, with perfect accuracy shading and depth, anything he wants. But he chooses to draw a pile of cowshit every single time. This is not a great artist. This is a stunted human being who happens to be able to perfectly draw dogshit.

The ongoing pro-Christina argument by seemingly intelligent music people is getting embarrassing.
Can't deny her talents? Sure I can.
A set of lungs does not an artist make.
The girl can competently imitate the lexicon of pop / rnb after which she is molded. Does that make Whitney Houston the greatest of all time?

So, who is the greatest vocalist younger than, say, 40 years old in pop music today?
I nominate Neko Case.

Well NOW I know. thank god axl has spoken.

Now I can sleep at night, knowing that Axl Rose digs Christina Aguilera's singing voice. I was worried that he might not.

Nobody's afraid of pop music... what's hypocritical here?
Christina's music is derivative and soulless, to say nothing of her lack of any contribution to its' actual creation.
I don't think anyone would say the same of say, Justin Timberlake, or even Beyonce.
Even the snobbiest indie snob around has love for good pop, but the line must be drawn somewhere, and defending Christina is a joke.
What's next?
Creative visionary Nick Lachey?
Hip-hop pioneer Lil' Bow Wow?
(And incidentally, I happen to believe that Jeff Mangum of Neutral Milk Hotel has perhaps the worst voice in the history of singing.)

It takes one to know one.

oh i know i'm a twat! but i'm not pretentious. i don't ever feel like i need to know everything so i can spout off some list of useless information to prove that i'm smart or cool. the only reason i know about so much music is because i LOVE it sincerely and i don't care who approves my musical tastes.
and you can dislike Jeff Mangum's voice all you want! but to say it is the worst voice in the history of singing? that's such a silly thing to claim no matter who's name you put in there. i can't stop giggling. i hope you're being silly on purpose.

Christina can sing & I think in time she'll make a good record or be given some good material to work with.. I understand the arguement about winning the vocal olympics does not a good artist make but when you got the pipes you got the pipes...so I'm not claiming she is a great artist but she is certainly the the best "vocalist" in the pop game today... for what that's worth.....
But it depends on what you are into....for my tastes I'd have to quote David Berman and say "all my favorite singers couldnt sing"

I am not afraid of pop music and I will beat its ass.

"i hope you're being silly on purpose."
Of course. I thought this was implied.
Also, those are some serious cakes on your site!
Mmmmm......

Xtina is an undeniable Talent, you don't need Axl to point that out.
As far as Neko Case goes, she's good, but she's no Jenny Lewis. (OH SNAP! No you Di'nt?)
Let The Games Begin!

Axl does know what he's talking about here, but you don't need him to point it out. Even if you don't like her songs, you cannot deny that girl's singing ability. Myself, I listen to mostly metal and a lot of classic hard rock, but xtina does blow me away with her vocal skills. You have to be pretty musically retarded or very unreasonably biased to not admit that that girl can sing.

I ♥ AXL!!
he's the best!

From a totally technical standpoint, he's right, Mrs. Xtina is, without question, one of the greatest vocalists of our time, not even any of the American Idol winners can touch her. You may not like her songs, but DAAAMMMMNNNN that girl can sing!
