What time did the first band go on?
Posted by Anonymous | October 10, 2006 5:51 AM
Yeah-- HR is still inasane-- just a more flashy insane less Haile selassie insane.

I can't believe I had to walk out and leave this show. They were terrible. At least the comedy of Ric Ocasek's hot model wife Paulina Porizkova continuously telling me that I was blocking her view (she was sitting in a chair!) was enough to keep the night fun.

HR has completely lost his mind and should not be doing shows! that was some strange/sad shit i witnessed last night.

Paulina Porizkova was not sitting down. I was standing right behind her.
I have tickets to the Bad Brains tonight. At least the Bouncing Souls should be good. How were Dub Trio and Avail?

Wow. it sucked? please elaborate somebody. i'm going to the last show. i last saw the original line up in 95 in boston and it was gearing up to be my all time favorite show until hr decided it was time to go back to the hotel. i'll always love the band but i understand that we ain't gonna get old hr when he was a young rebel that had so much to say. we won't even get the hr of 95! don't know exactly how he changed but he's not the same guy. i can take a few guesses tho based on more than just drug problems. even the look in his eyes..different. anybody got details on last nights proceedings?
Posted by J. CUSTER | October 10, 2006 10:45 AM
don't listen to these squares, Bad Brains is back! Yes, HR is weird, but that makes the show that much more interesting.
to the person who left early, it just got better and better, and next time try moving up front where you can see and hear. CBGB is no fun in the back.
up front the crowd was going crazy.
Posted by Anonymous | October 10, 2006 10:47 AM
Oops, I was thinking about Paulina Porizkova during the Ric Ocasek show. I forgot that he produced the Bad Brains and was probably in attendance last night. Any other celebs? Beasties?
Posted by Anonymous | October 10, 2006 10:51 AM
It sucked because HR was a blissed out, mumbling lunatic. He had on a headset mic thing that was shorted out for most of their set, you couldn't even hear him. And he barely even moved, he sang from the back of the stage in a trance. Not the HR I remember, except for being totally nuts. This was like watching Osama Bin Laden front your favorite band. KInd of sad and creepy to watch someone on a stage in that condition.
Posted by Chris | October 10, 2006 10:53 AM
"He had on a headset mic thing that was shorted out for most of their set, you couldn't even hear him."
he started using the real mic for the second half of the show - after he took off the helmet.

well i'll probaby like the show better than most. i'm just glad to see the band.

Yes, HR is crazy. He wore a trash can on his head at the Irving Plaza Soul Brains show, so the motorcycle helmet was showed nice progress to official headwear. If you want the Bad Brains, you gotta take the crazy.
And yes, MCA was standing by the sound board last night.

I saw Elijah Wood
Posted by Anonymous | October 10, 2006 11:16 AM
I saw when they were touring as Soul Brains. The show was 30 minutes of Bad Brains playing some of the most uninspired renditions of their songs I've ever heard (you could tell the band didn't want to be there) followed by HR giving a 30 minute lecture on the power of Jesus. It was ill in all the worst ways.
On a more positive note, it would still be cool to see them at CBGB.

The show did get better as the night went on- once the microphone issues were taken care of, the show got progressively better. HR was a little off with the timing of the lyrics to the music, and his peace signs and prayer hands were hard to take. Pay to Cum as the encore was killer - worth attending just for that.
Good news for people seeing the show tonight / tomorrow - if the band is able to talk some sense into HR, he'll skip the fancy / crazy microphones and the show will be a LOT better.
Avail kicked ass. Never heard them before, but I'll be picking up one of their CDs.
Posted by I was there | October 10, 2006 1:00 PM
I'm so glad I didn't go after reading these comments. $40 plus service charges is ridiculous for this half assed performance. at least the crowd got to see avail.

Sacred Love was my highlight...

To all the meat heads in the audience last night with the audacity to taunt HR: Go follow Limp Bizkit and stay the Fuh out of CBGB's and away from legendary artists like Bad Brains! Your all a bunch of monkeys who go to shows looking for violence! You are the reason Punk died in the mid 80's!
Now as far as the show... Yes the first handful of songs were plagued by technical issues! HR was using a headset that just didnt work. Luckily Daryl stepped up and covered for H until things got worked out! It was just a few songs before HR took the front mic and once he did he was brilliant! His voice is absolutly amazing and his improv melodies are brilliant!
Now cmon this isnt 1982 this is 2006.. These cats arent 18 anymore! If you go expecting to see the Bad Brains you saw when you were a kid it's just not going to happen. HR isnt going to be doing back flips on stage or jumpming out into the crowd! But he is going to deliver amzing vocals over legendary music that still blows everyone elses shit out of the water!
The band is tight (especially considering they havent played together in years!) and the show was one of those magical shows I will remember my entire life! Im going again tonight and again tomorrow!
Thank You HR, Earl, Daryl, and Doc! These shows are special.. we understand they arent easy to pull off and the real fans appreciate it!! F the meat heads!
Posted by Alientourist | October 10, 2006 2:47 PM
the band was awesome, just HR was insanely weird. the show was worth the 40 bucks. dub trio and avail kicked ass, mcRad were good as well.
Posted by Anonymous | October 10, 2006 3:03 PM
absolutely horrible. i walked out after 4 songs and feel bad for anyone that has tickets for tonight or tomorrow.
dub trio was "ok". avail blew me away. that was a fun set and made the $40 somewhat worth it.
anyone who thinks bad brains was good last night is as crazy as HR.
Posted by fil lander | October 10, 2006 4:49 PM
I feel bad for anyone that would walk out of a show after four songs and then find out that the show got much better. If you had stuck around you would have a different viewpoint. With someone as unpredictable as HR and a band as potentially volatile as Bad Brains, you really gotta hang in there and go for the ride and see how it turns out. Leaving somthing unpredictable after only four songs? That doesn't seem to me to be a pretty good way to attend something such as this. The show got better and better, and made a huge leap forward once HR decided to use the microphone in front of him.
Posted by tt | October 10, 2006 5:16 PM
These are shows to rock CBGBS(R.I.P) off. It should go out like it came in kicking and screaming not hugging and kissing. If you want tell everyone around you "peace be with you" go to church on Sunday and shake everyones hand during the Beatitudes and stay the fuck out of CBGBS. Look i understand people change and HR has definitly changed and you can't fault him for that. However if you no longer feel a connection to the music then don't show up and play. Just say I'm not into it anymore and go on with your life but for fucks sake don't show up and do it half assed. I feel bad for the other guys in the band they we're terrified of HR leaving mid performance that they didn't enjoy themselves. Earl had to give a speech just before the show started telling people not to go to crazy because "HR ain't into that shit man. He'll walk off this stage" What the fuck is that.
Posted by Anonymous | October 10, 2006 5:26 PM
odds are if you are going to walk out on a band after paying $40, you really shouldn't have been there anyway.
you should have asked someone to fill you in on what the band has been up to the last 20-some years so you wouldn't have been so surprised. he's like the kool keith of hardcore at this point. which is not necessarily a bad thing. i mean look at that helmet.
Posted by aj | October 10, 2006 5:29 PM
They can be up to whatever they want but Bad Brains is separate it lives on its own. So if your into some new shit then do that new shit and leave the old shit alone. If your going to revisit the past do it with the respect it deserves.
Posted by Anonymous | October 10, 2006 6:29 PM
Fine, the sound on the first few songs were screwed by the mic, but the crowd was screaming so loudly that it didn't matter too much. As soon as HR picked up the regular mic it was amazing! I was worried for a minute that he was going to leave the stage, but HR held it down! I wasn't expecting to see the HR of old, so the show was perfect for me. I honestly can't understand how someone would leave that show after 4 songs. Yea, the sound wasn't the best, but it was Bad Brains at CBGB! I wouldn't miss it or leave early for anything. I'll be going back for the last show! Can't wait!
Posted by brassbonanza | October 10, 2006 6:49 PM
no one's mentioned the near hour it took for bad brains to take the stage after avail was done. i watched the bass get tuned 5 times; the conditions weren't such that one would have to worry about the bass going out of tune that quickly.
the wait time was just insult to injury.

Holy crap you arent lying. Tonight's show was amazing. HR is totally crazy, but he still sounds great and the band sounded as amazing as they did in the 82 video at cb's.
it was mind blowing from beginning to end... i'm sure show 3 will be amazing too.
Bad Brains destroyed!
Posted by anon | October 11, 2006 3:35 AM
Bad Brains were amazing in their prime....all of their albums rock...even God Of Love is rockin'. But I think they should probably not have done these....everybody knows HR is not in the best of mental health and this is sort of a sad thing to do to a man in this condition. I mean, I've only seen ONE band play a successful show after being broken up for 10 years.....and that was Flipper...if Bruce and the gang pass through your town you'd be an absolute FOOL not to check them out.

Show 2 was unbelieveable. I can't imagine how crazy show 3 is going to be. Underdog should really get things going...
Posted by Nathan | October 11, 2006 8:11 AM
Damn, show 2 was tasty! The pit was a bit weak, but the show was excellent. This is not the HR from '82. It's a slower, happier, CRAZIER HR, but I like this version of him too. Really enjoyed Soulcraft especially since Quickness doesn't get a lot of love.
Tickets available at the door. The staff said there will be no extras on Sunday since the guest list is large.

anyone have any idea what time bad brains went on the last two nights?
Posted by Anonymous | October 11, 2006 12:07 PM
The bad brains are not in their prime. In all seriousness, I wasn't surprised by HR's performance and he was without a doubt absolutely horrible. The band's spirit should be revered, and considered with the greatest ever. But, to say that HR was good or even acceptable as a vocalist for songs like FVK, or Right Brigade or even Soulcraft is totally misleading. If anyone goes to see the original Bad Brains, I would recommend getting right upfront and stand as close to Dr.Know as possible and see the best of what's left of the Bad Brains. Dr. Know rips as a guitarist and can still do all these classic songs justice.

Did anyone claim that they are currently in their prime? Nope. And, is the fact that HR is not the same person (no matter what the cause) a reason to dismiss the importance of these shows? Or worse yet, to intentionally try NOT to enjoy them? I really don't think so. I think people should absolutely soak these shows up for what they are--incalculably important in the history of the club, the band, punk music as a form--and stop whining and complaining about what they aren't. Bad Brains are the most important punk band ever. Period. These shows should be fun. And Monday's show was exactly that. Since I don't have control over time and space (yet), I will take what I can get and I'll be grateful. Now, does anyone have photos of the shirtless crackhead who kept passing out at the front? BV? More photos?
Posted by DCR | October 11, 2006 12:32 PM
right after HR's crack bong hits
Posted by ben | October 11, 2006 12:36 PM
Tuesday night was a great show. Yes HR is insane, but he kept his rambling to a minimum as was into the show. Vocally, he is not what he used to be, but he is still good--and the band rocked. So, if you are expecting Bad Brains circa 1983 (CBGB DVD) then yes, you will be disappointd. But H.R. was only 26 years old back then; now he is 49. What do you expect? Of course he has lost some energy--of couse it's not the OLD Bad Brains of 23 Years ago. So what---just go and enjoy. They put on a hell of a show if you are just realistic about what Bad Brains is today.

I'm not sure what others of you saw on Monday night, but I saw Bad Brains fronted by HR at CBGB. I feel lucky to have been there because, after this stint of shows, . . . it will never happen again! If you let yourself be disappointed to the point of criticsm or, of all things, if you left, I feel sorry that you suffer from such a narrow view of things.

I'm really sad you people ripping on HR for not being the performer he was some 20 years ago, do you think this man still walks around his house singing bad brains tunes and memorizing lyrics? I think not. They were great and I'm really upset that I'm missing Underdog on the 3rd night!
So the rest of the band was tighter than HR on the mic, Im sure they practiced and were a little more serious about the gigs, whereas HR is a more of a free spirit. Also remember that this band with any other vocalist has never cut it. Without HR there is no Bad Brains to me.
Anybody who was complaining about bungled lyrics, starting late or leaving early, you are not a real Bad Brains fan! Go back to your MSG or Nokia Theater shows or whatever else you like to complain about!
Posted by ultralpha | October 11, 2006 6:19 PM
i wonder if anyone here has even seen them when they were legit. HR clearly doesn't give a shit about the old tunes anymore. He should stick to the more soulful, reggae dub stuff. they may as well bring back chuck mosely for the hard stuff

Just got back from the 3rd night and it was amazing! I didn't go to the 2nd show, but compared to the first night this was such a better show! The crowd was great, the band was tighter and HR was not "crazy!" HR seemed a lot more focused on the songs and the mic working the whole show helped a hell of a lot too. No "Big Takeover," which is a bummer. At the end of the set Daryl thanked Hilly for "letting the Bad Brains do their thing!" They made the crowd wait close to 20 minutes for the encore, but they finally came back and played "Destroy Babylon." Sick! HR mentioned that they had a new album coming and is "TBA." When he said that, Dr. Know gave him a look and laughed. He also said that they had a tour coming called the "Re-Ignition Tour." I don't know how likely that is, but we'll see. All in all, these shows were monumental. Whether it was the motorcycle helmet, the head-set microphone or that permanent grin on HR's face, everyone in attendance will have a story to tell of how they saw BAD BRAINS at CBGB!
Posted by brassbonanza | October 12, 2006 1:34 AM
I saw Bad Brains on the first night, Monday, and I thought it was totally awesome.
I saw them back in 2002 or 2003 when they were at Irving Plaza as 'Soul Brains' and nearly three fourths of their set was purely reggae dub, so to hear almost nothing but punk and hardcore was the biggest relief ever. :]
I couldn't believe they played certain songs like Let Me Help, The Regulator and Destroy Babylon - that was incredible. I got Earl's setlist after the gig, and it said Leaving Babylon on it, which didn't actually get played, bummer.
Anybody have a setlist from Tuesday or Wednesday night that they'd like to type up? I'm very curious if it was basically the same thing or if they threw in a curveball like How Low Can A Punk Get or She's Calling You.
Like said many, many times - you couldn't go to this gig and hope to see the HR of 1978, you've got to accept what he's become and enjoy it anyway - I did! My only hopes before the show were that I'd hear actual songs as opposed to the random dub/jam of Irving Plaza a few years back.
Posted by Greg | October 12, 2006 3:23 AM
Really....none of you 20 year old punks(now i'm talking to people who want to bash HR) are going to be the same when your 50 years old. NONE! It may seem like you'll be straight up hardcore forever but trust me time and experience changes everyone. I did'nt think HR was crazy, I thought he finally got his shit together. We'll see more of the Brains definitly. The man looked great up there. He looked happy, the entire band rocked on wednesday! They kicked fuckin' ass and the pit was insane!!! The point is HR is a much happier, older guy and because of that the song delivery is differnt but not less. Did any of you complaining assholes really think HR at 50 was gonna walk out and be some angry rebelious 23 year old talking about how 'the bougueoise had better watch out for me'? AND moving herky jerky around the stage, diving and doing splits and backflips? IDIOTS! The Bad Brains put on a memorable kick ass performace. Anyone who did not tyhink so is dead from the neck up...a meathead. I felt very lucky to be there. Damn fine show. Did anyone notice Doug Wimbish(with wife and kids) from Living Colour seated on stage back there? Underdog ripped too!!!!! cool ......

"Attitude" is missing. It was played after "I," right?
Posted by brassbonanza | October 12, 2006 10:17 AM
Last Night (Wed) was INSANE! the audience was complete chaos. Biggest pit I've seen at CB's in years. The band was right on and HR was not acting crazy. Sang into the stage mic all night, seemed focused and glad to be there with a mimimum of praying to the audience and much less of the waving peace signs. Lots of grinning and lots of singing. The crowd was nuts.

My legs are still bruised and sore from being crushed up against the stage on Tuesday. So I think maybe I'm getting old too. I missed the other two shows, and it sounds like Monday might not have been the best performance... but why are people bitching so much? HR sounded good, and though seeing him all blissed out was a lot different than the old days it still was Bad Brains. I am damned grateful that I got the chance to see them again. Hell, Sacred Love was worth the price of admission alone.

Why are people complaining that HR was extremely happy? What the hell is that? Whats wrong? The guy was happy to be entertining your fuckin' ass! I'd rather see him as he was last night (wed) than be pissed off. What would the point be really? He's been thru that already. I liked his whole vibe! He was so chill...lookin' like a straight up guru. It was festive....the show last night fuckin' rocked hard. I like the spiritual, grinng HR so fuck all haters. I'm loyal. i'll continue to wear my bad brains shirts prouder now....bad brains rules. Let the man be who he is and enjoy the show....

s'funny reading all these back n' forth comments....
there's no one right answer here. if you've never seen them before 1990 even (and that's late). then the only way you'll get it is to buy the dvd or watch all that great footage on youtube.
that man was the baddest man on the planet. i've seen jello, keith, henry, etc., all great. s'all just a matter of opinion. but HR was in a class by himself. and if ANYONE could, at 49, be more than just vital, be close to what he was, still feed off that fire, it would be him. his spirit was such. Thusly, it's a shame to see him so, relatively, enfeebled. due in large parts to his tumultuous life & excesses. it breaks my heart.
once upon a time i left inspired & empowered after a bad brains show. in this case, it's best that my memories of him/them, triumphant, defiant, & the baddest band ever, remain intact. so i attended none of the shows. (after warring with myself for days). i hung out outside tuesday after wards... saw a few heads... not many however... saw daryl, saw earl... saw the limos.... HR in a limo... the guy who dumped a garbage can on stage during a set by Discharge when they switched to that wack fake zeppelin sound...the world's changed too much. what you are witnessing is the fine line of genius & insanity being crossed. and if you weren't there to see the difference, let me tell you... go back & see the footage & imagine. sometimes you really had to be there & i feel blessed to have been whilst he was... "HR!"
But, as long as you enjoyed the show & took something from it, positively, then that's all that counts. Stop the debate & just revel in seeing the band play a historic venue for the last time.

bring back CHUCK MOSELEY??????????? Not even HR at his spaciest could come up with a worse idea.

Don't believe the hype, Bad Brains was on time Tuesday night no doubt. So glad i was there.
What cracks me up is all the times HR wasnt in the band they got dissed like crazy,
"wheres HR?","Bad Brains is not Bad Brains w/o HR",etc.. Then you get a chance to see the OG lineup and diss it even harder! These tickets werent easy to get so i assume those who rushed to buy tix were diehards for the most part.....wouldnt the diehards be aware of the changes this band has gone thru over the years? I can only assume most of the negativity comes from kids who werent even born yet "back in 82". I dont see how anyone could seriously expect to see circa 82 Bad Brains at these shows, ridiculous. Either way, you can be the "hardest of the hardcore" or whatever new jack crap thats out these days, but you still cant touch the Bad Brains.

Like an asshole I took my earplugs out for the Wednesday show. My shit is still ringing but if it's the Bad Brains that are gonna make me go deaf so be it. That show was fucking sick. I ran into people I hadn't seen since I was in high school. I danced. And everyone was cool in the pit and I had definitely some of the most hardcore fun I'd had in years.
I was at the Monday show. I don't think a worse thing could have happened with Earl casting a pall of negative energy about no violence and HR leaving if we have fun. Not only did it make everyone feel awkward about what was or wasn't acceptable behavior it made everyone focus that much more on how HR's performance was off. It brought me out of the element of going off. I still enjoyed myself. I was still in the mix and sway but if I didn't go to the wednesday show too I would have really felt like I didn't see something special.
I saw "soul brains" in '99 at Irving. It was a great show. It was dub reggae heavy but I love that shit too. So it's cool. HR was doing his high priest of rasta schtick and totally on the vocals. But I saw them the next night at some weird club in the hudson valley and he was wearing an adidas track suit and invited people to play with him while he played drums. This really relaxed vibe like we'd just seen them in the practice space.
It's always hit or miss.
I saw the Bad Brains on the "Rise" tour. There's no comparison. Nobody can top HR. He is the fucking man. Whether he's got a motorcycle helmet on or not. He's got the charisma that draws people. It's true. It's genuine. It might be fucking crazy shit you can't even begin to understand but it's the same manic crazy shit manifested in a different way. Enjoy the smirks and the way he makes jokes with his eyes. He's still THE frontman. He's just doing it the way he's gonna do it as a 49 year old. Punk's do what they want (in theory) and HR in practice.

So where are the pictures from Tuesday night? I saw a ton of cameras there, but I haven't had any luck finding pix online so far. Help a senile ol' punk with no shortterm memory out...

(Didn't see the show. Sid, Darryl, ya'll shoulda said somethin'.) The Bad Brains have lives, lives beyond playing music, and if your capacity for enjoyment is limited to how well HR does on the mic after all these years, then you don't understand the magnitude of what you were witnessing. George Clinton was once denied entry on a flight because he needed a shower ... but he's still the godfather of funk. (Pun unintended) WHO THE HECK CARES IF HR WAS DIFFERENT ALL THESE YEARS LATER? This is LIFE! Ya'll are lucky he even showed up! And if he's struggling with some things, you are even more fortunate you got to see him again. They gave the fans a performance, be happy for what you got. Wish I was there ... love to the Bad Brains, and Sid.

too bad I missed it. The Brains are my fave of all time. My band used to close our sets with At the Movies. Best wishes for the future of the band and the lives of the bandmates... and whether or not HR is who you want him to be, he's given us more than most over time so F the haters. No matter what they say, never give in, never give in...

Bad Brains fucking rock, no question. All of you cry baby pissy pants mothers make me sick. I would have loved to been there just to witness the original line up. These men should be respected for the music they gave us. Stop your bitching, slap in Rock for Light, and shut the fuck up.

WOw!!! I missed it!! Well being in Arizona dosnt help...I dont care what anybody says about HR...!

Iv'e seen him w/ his other band Dubb agents in a clup with 20 30 people in it and it was alot of fun... dont give the guy shit because hes grinning al the time... It's HR!!! everyone knows the cat is different... and if you know what HR is all about you know it probably drives him crazy when Everybody and everyone bug him to play his Bad Brains Hardcore stuff when he's with his reggae band...The BAd BRains are the greatest band ever... i saw the bad brains in cologne / germany last weekend. it was the most boring, static and plain show i´ve ever seen in my life. i was really disapointed. it was fucking expensive and they played for one single hour... this has nothing to do with the ideas hardcore was originally all about. this has nothing to do with d.i.y. at all. this is just a comercial fuck up. their reunion was the worst idea they ever had, but maybe the ran out of money...

Everyone, if H.R. want's to act like that let em. There would be no individuality in the band if he was to act crazy just for you. Plus the man is about 50 years old! How many bands in ANY genre of rock STILL rock like that! I can only think of bands like AC/DC, or Metallica. The BAD BRAiNS blow every band out of the watta no matta what!

I gotta agree with brother Sid Mac. This hardcore shit isn't entertainment. That was never what it was supposed to be. I saw them in Toronto this summer for a festival, and H.R. was definitely on his game that day. He was not screaming and thowing himself around and doing backflips, but he was still about as magnetic as you can get. A great performance. We all know that H.R. has his share of problems, have some sympathy, for christ's sake. And some respect. To walk out after 4 songs is a testimony to how disrespectful this new generation is. Even if they sounded like shit, you stay. You pay your respects. You don't bitch about the money you spent. You show respect because these guys started hardcore. they are the first. We owe them, they don't owe us anything.
You pay the money because you want to see them. You don't turn around and bitch about the entertainment value. You owe them, they don't owe you shit.
And the question: why still parade him onstage? Two reasons, yes, dude deserves to make a living. Secondly, he is better off with his life long buddies playing shows and staying busy. Understand where this guy is coming from. Enough with the "crack bong" comments. Dude is sick, and he gave you his heart and soul and his performances have inspired EVERYONE who has even thought about making heavy music.
and as far as the big boys being better than the bad brains?
hahahahahahahahahahahahaha....that is the funniest shit ever. Big Boys were not a powerful band...Brains were the most powerful band. Period.

Chuck Mosley played about 60 shows w/ the Bad Brains between 1990-1991. He's still at it, with a new album out this summer on Reversed Image Unlimited. Check out www.chuckmosley.com and www.myspace.com/chuckmosleyvua for more details. He's also going to do an interview for a Bad Brains documentary here sometime soon...
