Built to Spill @ Irving Plaza

Built to Spill played their first of three shows at NYC's Irving Plaza last night. Doug Martsch is playing a free acoustic solo set at Sound Fix Records in Brooklyn at 5pm today (aka 1.5 hours from when I'm posting this - October 5th). (all tour dates).

was there last night and it sucked. Ive seen them twice before and once even at irving. the preaching needs to stop, it ruined all momentum and flow, and was contrived and stupid. I miss the old striped down rock and roll band that was BTS less than a year ago.

Preaching? In what way?

I'm not going to any of the shows at Irving but I've always been somewhat disappointed in seeing Built to Spill. I'm not sure if they still do it but they used to close out their shows with 15-20 minute, room-clearing jam sessions. It used to irritate the hell out of me because they could have easily used that time to play 2 or 3 more songs instead of wanking out to the boredom of eveyone but them.

They played a "way too-long cover of "Rearrange," a protest song by the reggae group the Gladiators." (from nytimes) which sucked. Then slipped in a DVD about environmental activists / ecoterrorists. It was stupid and lengthy. They played guitar riffs as some talking head spoke about how ecoterrorists should not be treated like political terrorists. Really obvious and a waste of time.

Last night's show hardly "sucked". I seen BTS put on better shows but that doesn't make last night awful. The "talking head" was Calvin Johnson, the head of K Records and a member of the Halo Benders with Doug. The song they played along with the video is a Halo Benders song entitled Bomb Shelter. I do agree that Doug screwed around with the DVD projection setup too much but it didn't ruin the show. The cover of Rearrange was excellent. The band has always done things their own way. Nothing I saw last night was surprising. They have always played covers and long jams.

"covers and long jams" are good, well at least they can be, if the song being covered is not awful. If it was that alone, I would not have said last night was a waste. My problem was with the constant distractions, be it the DVD player, or the enviro thing. It killed the flow of the show.
