They were worried about thiefs taking the awning. They wanted to take it down earlier, but decided it was needed for the press conference. That awning wasn't that old anyways.

they're taking things like the bar and that dreadful toilet to vegas with them. other salable items are going on ebay or something (probably that awning, hence the concern for theives).

I'm surprised the crowd last night didn't take the entire club innards with them. I saw one guy trying to steal an exit sign get shouted at by a bouncer, and a few guys ripping posters down, but I think the place was still left intact. Then again, if it was possible to steal somthing from the place, wouldn't it have been donw long ago? Patti put on a great show last night (the best I've seen since the last time she played CBGB's). Too bad the place was too crowded, and a few assholes were there "just to be there" and not for the show.
Since nobody else seems to have written about the show, I'll try to remember what I can:
We got in after a >1.5 hour wait. Why? So they could have a fucking press conference inside before the show. I think both my girlfriend and I are both coming down with colds! By the time we got in, Patti had already been on for ten minutes (urgh!). The band split the show into two sets. The first included lots of slower songs (Ghost Dance, Kimberly, Redondo Beach, Free Money, Ain't it Strange). Richard Loyd came up and did a weird spoken word version of Marquee Moon with Patti. I would have prefered to have Tom Verlaine come up there for a full blown version, but it was great nonetheless. The second set was the more rocking of the two (Gloria, Rock and Roll Nigger, Elegy, Pissing in a River, Birland, Space Monkey). They also played tons of covers, Little Johnny Jewel (with Richard), So you wanna be a rock and roll star, My generation, For your love (Yardbirds), and a Stones song (I forget which one, I was too busy enjoying the show to write things down). The band also played a great Ramones medley which got the corwd riled up. All in all, a great show. Patti starting crying before Elegy when she read the names of those who are no longer with us. The crowd cheered and whistled loudly for their favorites (Lester Bangs, Richard Stohl, Johnny Thunders, Stiv Bators, Ramones, etc...).
A great night, and a fitting end to the club.....

1.5 hr wait? Did you have tickets or was this a stand by line? How difficult was it to get in if you did not have a ticket? I decided to stay in last night because I assumed it would be full of people who were there "just to be there." I was also at shows every night last week and did not want to end a great week on a sour note in case I would have to wait in line for hours and won't be able to get in afterwards. Couldn't care less about CBGB, I would have just liked to see Patti again.

Maybe Patti Smith will do a New Year's Eve show at the Bowery this year, too.

Yeah, that was a 1.5 hour wait for people WITH tickets. The doors were supposed to open at 8pm, but opened around 8:45-9pm. To my knowledge, the only people who got in either had tickets or were on the guest list. Although, later I did see that they made some guy pay to get in (I thought it looked like Legs McNeil). As we entered, there was a guy in front of us trying to get in and the woman at the door had security boot him out because he didn't have a ticket. As two burly bouncers carried him out he whined "but I'm famous...." Apparently not famous enough.
Also, I saw Tina Weymouth giving an interview next door.

That anarchy symbol is painted in my blood! That was an awesome night! And I didn't even get inside the club!

Why the long wait to get in?
You can blame Patti Smith for that. She insisted on delaying her soundcheck for two hours and would not allow the doors to open until she was ready. I love Lenny Kaye and the rest of the guys, but she was in bitch mode to all us "peasants" that night. She spoke more about her Sirius radio show than she did CBGB.

To you fuckwads who are glad CBGB is closed, either you once had your feelings hurt and got thrown out by me or my staff for doing something stupid or you just hate underground music. Over 50 people are out of work and NYC lost another place for bands to play and kids to escape. The East Village is turning into Central Park West and maybe that suits you, but it breaks my goddamned heart.

SO FUCKING WHAT!!! Why would you even bother bringing your sorry ass attitude to a club like that??? You obviously have no clue as to what it's even about. Your loss but then again, you'd never get it anyway. Some friends and I drove 9 hours from NC for the final hardcore matinee (10/08) and loved every second of it... yeah, INCLUDING the wait to get in where tons of us were hangin' out, shootin' the shit, reminiscing, etc. But you don't know what THAT'S about... you'd rather bitch about a cold. Hmmm, now that I think about it, I WAS sick that night myself. Maybe your gf caught my cold from suckin' my dick and in return... passed it along. ENJOY!...She sure seemed to like it!
