Christina Courtin
"'The excitement for Christina is similar to what I saw with Norah Jones,' says Brice Rosembloom, who cooked both women for residencies at Makor, 'The difference is that with Norah, it took a push from the industry to get things going. With Christina, the buzz is purely audience driven.'"
"Courtin’s bold, busy voice touches on both Janis Joplin and Antony, and her songs have an immediately classic feel—like Norah Jones, with more brawn." [Time Out]
Everyone keeps telling me I have to see Christina Courtin perform. And over the past few months I've made numerous attempts to see her at NYC places like Joe's Pub, Rockwood Music Hall and Mo Pitkins, but It never worked out. So thankfully she just put the above video on YouTube to hold me over for a bit. Is Christina the "next Norah Jones"? Better? I think at least definitely more interesting. I hope to find out for myself when she plays Merkin Concert Hall with Bell Orchestre.
Hey, that drummer (mathias kunzli) looks familiar.

"Is Christina the "next Norah Jones"?"
Nope, too ugly. You only can sell pretty people to the masses.

If I were a woohoohoo foreign country, would you vacaton in my big cities?

Christina is great though it can feel awkward at times to watch her.

sounds like Raffi to me.

Gross. Just plain gross.
Posted by Anonymous | October 20, 2006 4:52 PM
I want to see her live.

How come the more annoying you sing the more popular you become? Although I dont know if she's gonna be popular...In fact...I cant tell if she's good or bad because she's so damn annoying.... Norah Jones isnt annoying....she's ultra smooth...like a Starbucks (tm) double frappucino....ha... which is the key to her success.. goes down smooth. this girl is going to tap into the quirk factor (Tori Amos, Regina Spector, Alanis Morrisette) and others who think its arty to over complicate singing and pronunciation.. also she's in desperate need of a makeover
Posted by rt | October 20, 2006 5:28 PM
ok please dont compare great singers to terrible coffee. Now I might like this girl if i had just heard her voice, but her performance kills it.

this is a wonderful little song.

If I was a foreign country, would you come visit????
Posted by Anonymous | October 20, 2006 6:07 PM
If she were a foreign country, she'd be one not worth visiting, like Kazakhstan.

Well the starbucks thing is a joke...as Norah is definitely the queen of starbucks music .... she's not bad though...she's got a nice voice..its just so marketable to the starbucks/borders world..

Wow, you guys are cynical today. She has an amazing voice. For me, the talent well overrides her manner. I'm liking this.

PLEASE DO NOT SUPPORT STARBUCKS! THEY GRIND UP KITTIES AND PERCULATE THEM IN THE COFFEE! SUPPORTING STARBUCKS= KILLING CUTE INNOCENT KITTIES! (and soon after having to take a mad shit!)

Whoa, easy there all ye haters. This is some quality music.
What the heck are you looking for, hookers like the rest of the music industry. She's not claiming to be Norah Jones, thats the critics fishing for comparisons because they're critics, not Artists. A.A. (also assholes) I think she's hot. Post a picture of your negative nancy mugs before you rip into hers.

I always wondered what happened to Bobcat Goldwait!
Posted by Anonymous | October 22, 2006 12:26 AM
if anything i would say a more classical regina spektor, at least thats what her voice reminds me of
Posted by glenn | October 22, 2006 11:31 AM
Thank you rel! A couple of hipsters didn't see a "The" and they panicked. Suddenlly a pretty girl is "ugly" and (deliberately) funny lyrics are an April fools joke. The only semi-intelligible negative comment on here is from rt, but I disagree with him too. The Norah Jones comparison doesn't make any sense--it's apples and oranges. There's no denying Christina's an above average talent. If you don't see that...then just go back to listening to whatever uninspired crap band you've been assigned to like today make the same song for the 800,000th time. Have fun.

I normally dislike all the hating here on BV, but that singer is beyond annoying.
Posted by Anonymous | October 22, 2006 12:31 PM
Great video. I like the performance. She has the mannerisms of a spelling bee champ, but i dig that. It's akward but cute.
Does anyone have the lyrics?
Posted by Cuban Bee | October 22, 2006 4:41 PM
I'm just saying, these lyrics, though sung with some degree of joy, etc. how great it is to be alive, make me feel funny inside, like make me not want to be alive so much, because she takes up so much room.
Posted by Anonymous | October 23, 2006 12:21 PM
hey stop talking about these embarrassing things, lamos.....Norah Jones (who was bred to be a perfectly styled famous singer), starbucks coffee, barf? I was skeptical of you vegans to begin with.

All you haters obviously haven't seen her live, because she is utterly amazing, heartbreakingly so.

I'd probably be okay with it if I hadn't seen her performance. The whole "someone with down syndrome trying to fly" thing just didn't do it for me.
Posted by Sucka | October 24, 2006 1:21 AM
Oh yeah, let's see her live so I can waste $15 bucks on Regina Spektor's bastard sister. Seriously, she's just not good. Period. Her voice is thin, her mannerisms mimic seizures, and her music is bad elevator jazz. Call me a hater. Please do. I don't listen to crap music just because BV tells me to. I listen to crap music because it is pleasant to my ears and the band members wear skinny jeans and have mustaches. Good day sir.

I do prefer a silly hater to a pretentious one.
When I looked away, I enjoyed it. The utter abandon makes me uncomfortable, but the voice and song are nice.
I am not in the habit of defending Tori Amos on message boards, but I would like to say to rt that I am a fan of hers, but not at all because I think her quirkiness or singing style indicate depth or distinguish her music as better than anything else. I just like the music.
Posted by Amanda | October 24, 2006 5:25 PM
well, she does have a great voice, that's not really debatable.
but one simple things here...
SHE CRAZY!
it's like watching a train wreck, and I can't help myself.

You guys HAVE to meet her--she's gorgeous and amazing and talented. So you think the lyrics are stupid. Try most of Elton John's stuff. His writer used words that worked and never worried about the meaning...there usually wasn't any. We just thought there was.
