Lily Allen @ Hiro Ballroom, NYC | pics

This show was supposed to be mediocre. The blogosphere should be full of nasty comments today - about how terrible Lily Allen was live, and how she should stay in the studio where she belongs. But I doubt it will be. How could it be? She was fantastic - both in talent and awkward stage presence - well maybe she was a little nervous, but what 21-year old wouldn't be while playing to their first-ever NYC crowd full of industry and critics and Americans - New Yorkers even?
I'm not saying she's "the next Arcade Fire". I'm just saying that based on past bad experiences with similar artists, she exceeded expectations. In fact she was everything I hoped Lily Allen would be - plus a band with horns - and she's just getting started. OK, the show was short - way too short (especially for the price) - like 6 or 7 songs - and the end of Smile was a little messed up too (details, details) --- overall: great. I'll definitely be making an effort to see her again next time I get the chance (just please Lily play more songs!).

The show was Tuesday night, October 10, 2006 @ Hiro Ballroom in NYC.

What happened to her bust?

she was a lot better than i expected. not much stage presence but she sang pretty well. good job lily! that said, i wont be going back anytime soon if she keeps up with the short sets (and HORRIBLE opening band)

Why should it have been mediocre? Are there a new gang of Lily-haters massed out there now? I saw her back in July in London and she was totally great. OK, she may have been playing to a home crowd, and not so nervous, but she rocked the joint. One of my best gigs of the year! Glad you liked the NYC show...

Lily was fun, energetic, and kept the music going albeit only for 30 minutes. I thought Domino, the opening band was good but Mark Ronson the DJ between sets was great, very Girl Talkesque. So all in all the show was worth the price of admission. Personally she played all the songs that I liked off the only album of hers I knew so couldn't really ask for much more.

Same story here in Toronto - short and really good. I wish she played for longer, but then I also wish some other bands would know when to stop. So I don't know - less is more for me

Is Lily Allen Jewish? That looks like a blinged out star of david shes wearing.....

It read "YoYo", which I believe, is a London club

wow, you guys are really taking it easy on her. that show was pretty bad. yeah, her voice and the songs are awesome, but wouldn't you rather just stay home and listen to the record?
the crowd was a complete dud and she really had nothing to work off of. i'd read great reviews of her UK shows, so i was a bit dissappointed.
and the big questions about the band: live or memorex? most of those horns were backing tracks. dudes coulda stuffed socks in there and it would have had no effect on the music.
i'll totally give the benefit of the doubt and check her out again, but c'mon . . .

I was at the show and I enjoyed it. Short set, but thanks to yesterday's Toronto poster I was not caught by surprise. Normally that would be annoying but I felt like crap yesterday so a short set was actually better for me.
The songs played well live; the horn section is essential to the experience. I wish she would have played "Take What You Take" but maybe next time.
Damn the Hiro Ballroom is beautiful!

i was there and thought it was great too. and i was happy that it was short too- these old bones can't take long shows anymore. but then again i didn't have to pay for my ticket or else i might have been pissed.
i thought her voice sounded great, she was cute and didn't seem too nervous on stage, and all the people standing by me were totally into it. i have to go to a lot of shows for work and i've seen a LOT of bad ones. this one not so much, in my opinion!
fun night.

I'm *so* glad that I didn't drive up from Philadelphia, without a ticket, as I'd planned. A 7-song show doesn't warrant four hours of driving.

For the record: I am neither a lover or hater. I have seen her name mentioned, but I never heard her music or seen her until I viewed the video above.
The song is catchy, but the singing is average. Better than the average person, but not solo artist worthy pipes. And what's up with her head? It's huge!
But, the song is catchy, and the lyrics are interesting. She must be the writer, but I can't see a record label giving a non-attrativve and average singer such a good song.

Generally I also thought she was good last night. But 28 minutes of music? Give me a break.
The DJ's between the sets were complete shit, and the more the crowd hated them, the louder they turned it up so you couldn't even have a chat while waiting for Lily.
And then she came out and played such a short setlist, that it left me wondering if she's really serious about being an artist.
She should have:
1. Played every song on the album. Boring, I know, but she's only got one album, so she needs to do the entire thing to get enough material.
2. Learn some cover songs. You have to fill at _least_ an hour's spot if you are going to use the tour to promote. So cover a few songs here and there.
For the songs she did play, it was certainly fun, and she's shy on stage, but it comes of pretty cute.
I just wish there was more.
At 28 minutes, that show was a buck a minute. Not quite the value one looks for ...

I was definitely disappointed with the length of the concert and with the crowd, well at least my view of the front of the crowd. I got a setlist which read:
LDN
Window Shopper (Nan, You're A Window Shopper)
Shame 4 U
Knock Em
Littlest Things
Friday Night
Smile
Encore:
Everything (Everythings' Just Wonderful)
Alfie
She only played Alfie at the encore though. I thought she sounded great, though, and the short set, as disappointing as it was, definitely makes me want to see her more next time she's here. Got some photos as well.

>>I can't see a record label giving a non-attrativve and average singer such a good song.
They didn't *give* her the songs. She wrote them.
Anyway: mediocre show. Yes, I said it. HA!

"They didn't *give* her the songs. She wrote them."
She wrote most of the lyrics, yes. not the music. that was written by a bunch of other folks (ronson, future cut).

She did not play "Everything's Just Wonderful". Only Alfie in the encore. 7 songs total.
Posted by Anonymous | October 11, 2006 11:48 AM
I think it was 6+1, could have been 7+1.
Posted by Anonymous | October 11, 2006 11:55 AM
i wish she had done the cover of the kooks song and or the kaiser chiefs...love both of those.
she was just so nervous! poor lil one!
and 3 pages of a record label guest list doesnt a fun crowd make.
unfortunate, but true.

So THAT'S who all those a-holes were...
Posted by Anonymous | October 11, 2006 12:42 PM
Learn some covers? You stupid people! That's the worst idea ever. She's a pop music star.
Covers! Oh my god you're a moron.
Posted by Eric | October 11, 2006 12:53 PM
anyway she knows a bunch of covers already - Kaiser Chiefs, Kooks, and Keane to name a few.
Posted by Anonymous | October 11, 2006 1:01 PM
Yes, covers. Something to fill the time. 28 minutes is totally unacceptable.
Something tells me that it isn't the lack of material though that made the show short - it could well have been nerves. Particularly as she didn't play "Everything's just wonderful" as a second encore.
Love that one ... all the magazines talk about weight loss / if I buy those jeans I can look like Kate Moss ... it's pretty funny cuz I got your fuckin money and you're never gonna get it just because my bad credit ...
Sigh.

I think Lily puts it best, "When you first left me I was wanting more".

Ronson was great. Lily was poor. Big head, small body. She looked alienesque.
Judging from the photos, I was standing right next to you, Mr./Ms. Vegan. I was the only dude in a suit.

When I first heard about Lily Allen, I thought that this girl was great. Her song Smile made me feel better about myself, but the way she took revenge on that louse of a boyfriend...I envy you girl!!
I say you're doing great, keep it up and no one has to tell you that you will get far...you already know that!!
Also, I like the way you dress. Only a gifted individual could pull off fahion like that!!
Have fun...but you already are!!
