Do people know of other New Year shows, although the MOS were amazing last week.

ya, CYHSY at Hammerstein, and Govt Mule at Beacon or Town Hall or one of those.

ugh, who would waste their new years with BORINGmates of state.

MoS - boring? Are you nuts? Went to the show last week, having never heard their music. Twas awesome.

MoS have been expanding their sound with each album and now have infused more elements of punk.
They make alot of beautiful noise with just keyboards and a drum kit.
I wouldn't call the Irving show boring, although I think they did rush through the set.
I really love each MoS album but their live show is unfortunately missing something. I can't put my finger on it.
As for New Year's Eve, CYHSY is out. Saw them @ Osheaga Fest in Montreal. They were an hour late getting on stage (and arrogant and underwhelming when they actually took the stage) and a nine-year old in the front row turned and asked, "Why don't we just go home and put their cd on?"
I think he unwittingly planned my New Year's Eve.

surely there will be a superior NYE show announced soon...

For some reason I didn't have fun at the Irving show even though I have at their shows in the past. I don't know if it was just me or something about that particular show. But now I'm not excited to see them anymore, although I love their albums.

they are a novelty band. suck.balls.

I really want to see Mates of State but not on New Years. I hope they come back to NYC soon though, because the last gig they played I missed.

OK, here we go...
What's the novelty?
That they are husband and wife?
That they are a duo?
That they are guitarless?
If anything it seems to me that people in a relationship (husband/wife, boyfriend/girlfriend, whatever) that write music together would tend to make even more genuine and personal music than other manufactured bands that revolve around a look, sound and/or a certain specific influence.
If you're going to call a band a novelty act, you should try to explain what makes it so. You took the time to make a post.
Be specific.
Maybe you have a point.
Or maybe you just like to use the words "suck" and "balls" in the same line.

MrBartell1:
CHYSY ruled at Osheaga. More importantly, why bash an incredible band from your own city? Oh wait, I forgot that it's trendy to hate Alec and the gang now - my mistake.

mark b, what the f are you talking about?
what does being from his city have to do w/ anything? do you know how many bands are from his city? and do you know how many of them are shitty? this ain't idaho. he gave you his reasons. fellatio dude still hasn't. say what you want about mos, but calling them a novelty smacks of a deficient vocabulary.

E, that's a good point about the sheer magnitude of bands from the city. I guess that I'm just sick of this sudden wave of hatred toward this band. Probably should've kept my comments to myself.

MB, no prob, i agree w/ you that for various, weird reasons, people start hating on bands in unison. i think it's a 'meme' phenomenon or something. and, yeah, with cyhsy: no new albums, no annoying live moments, yet people are starting to hate on them. people are funny. and fickle. i think your comment was fine. fellatio dude is the one who prob should've kept quiet or at the least thought through his comments.

what a great show, looking forward to hear about some new years shows coming up

I saw them with Asobi Seksu and, by contrast, MOS sounded pretty week. I guess if you like that sort of cutesy pop stuff, you'll dig it, but to me, it sounded like a cross between the Brady Bunch and Hanson....Really.
Even the two people who I was with (who like them on record) felt a need to get out of there after about three songs. I guess I like my music with a bit of a beautiful sadness to it, which is why I like Asobi much better.
Maybe my viewpoint would have been different if they would have been paired up with someone that shared there pop-ish style, such as Belle and Sebastian or something along those lines.
I was always on the fence with MOS, but now it's sealed - I don't really care for them. Just my opinion though.
