SHARA WORDEN AS MY BRIGHTEST DIAMOND @ TOWN HALL | OCT 1, 2006
My Brightest Diamond @ Town Hall

Shara Worden and band (string section included), aka My Brightest Diamond, were such wonderful openers that I would have been happy to leave before headliner Sufjan even took the stage (I'm happy I didn't though).

My Brightest Diamond played about a 45-minute set including an awesome full-band+special-guest-beatboxer cover of Prince's When Doves Cry (she's been known to do it solo too) (and she did it at Joe's Pub - get the MP3).

Then Shara came back to join Sufjan and band as a butterfly for the rest of the show - so did her string section.

She was the only regular member of Sufjan's 12-person band that I recognized. What happened to Katrina Kerns? Sufjan dedicated a song to her -- one where she appeared in the video playing in the background -- I think she was in the audience.

If you're going to see Sufjan, get there early for Shara.

Get the MP3 of Shara's hip-hop collaboration with Jedi Mind Trick.

All photos in this post by Wes. More on his Flickr here and here, and even more photos he took of Shara can be seen the BV interview he conducted with her.

Katrina's absence was distressing, and then for Suf to tauntingly flutter those wings in my face... Well, I seem to be the only one who walked away less than thrilled, but I was there Saturday night. Though I'm sorry I missed My Brightest Diamond.

I saw Katrina in the audience on Sunday night.

what's with all the gayness?

Posted by Anonymous | October 6, 2006 11:03 AM

Yeah the wings? He looks like a mobile that used to hang from my little sister's ceiling. I don't know if it was a my little pony or a rainbow bright, but either way, it was way more bad-ass that this dude.

I can't believe that people still get all freaked out about a guy doing somthing feminine. Why don't you drag him behind your pickups, guys?

Posted by bryce | October 6, 2006 11:46 AM

you mean about a gay doing something feminine...

Posted by Anonymous | October 6, 2006 11:55 AM

I guess he didn't need a glockenspielist this time 'round.

Does anyone remember the name of the camp that he told the predatory wasp story about? Was it Camp Liberty?

Posted by bumpershine | October 6, 2006 1:02 PM

its like victorias secrets

Honestly? Sufjan's performance was great and all, and I can tolerate the personality cult/religiosity/flamboyant art camp crap as long as he continues to create perfect pop -- but I did not like Shara's performance. Watching her dance is excruciating (anyone remember the Elaine dance from Seinfeld? This was worse . . . ), her back-up band (because that's all they were) sucked, and the beatboxing duet was not complementary but gratuitous. But worst of all, although Shara has undeniable skills -- a classically trained voice with impressive force and range, and some familiarity with both piano and guitar, she hasn't discovered her sound yet. One moment she's doing a weak Sufjan imitation, and the next she's rasping like Eleanor Friedburger live. I can't help but wonder if Sufjan is championing her because of her musical skill, or because she was raised by Pentacostalists in Ypsilanti.

*Eleanor Friedberger. Sorry, must be hungry or something.

"I can't believe that people still get all freaked out about a guy doing somthing feminine"

One word . . . POISON

Honestly, if I were at this dude's show, I wouldn't be able to get over how ridiculous he looks, feminine or not, I just don't like it.

we're all dancing around the real issue
here ----> Sufjan is gay. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but the mans G-A-Y, thanks for asking. not that it's an issue. it really isn't. but he's gay and christian. this is important because there's a camp out there (not a gay camp)who claim his songs are academic and not heart-felt.

how can a gay christian be academic in his songwriting? he's Elton john gay my friends. He has wings. he loves to dress up as Abe Lincoln. He's from Michigan people! Ahhh, sufjan is the daddy. Lord of Mercy! Respec! Ah Trailer Load of Girls!! Love How The Gal Dem Flex!

i rest my case.

Posted by bryce | October 6, 2006 8:47 PM

buju no like sufjan...

Posted by Anonymous | October 6, 2006 11:44 PM

Sufjan is a lyrical god, and should be your master. Bow down in prostration!! Critics are just haters. He is one of the greatest artists to emerge in the past decade.

Posted by jj | October 7, 2006 2:51 AM

He is one of the gayest artists to emerge in the past decade.

Posted by Anonymous | October 7, 2006 10:38 AM

yeah, the wings are just scary. it just makes me more scared of christian musicians. maybe next time they'll dress like animal pairs from noah's ark.

Posted by agno | October 7, 2006 1:21 PM

Wait, what does being from Michigan have to do with being gay? I'm confused.

Posted by Charlotte | October 7, 2006 5:38 PM

Confused about what? Your sexuality?

Posted by Sigmund | October 7, 2006 5:43 PM

As one of many obsessed females, the whole being christian thing, I could get over that. But the gay thing, yeah, that could present an obstacle to our eventual marriage.

Re: the wings- he can dress up like a monkey if he wants as long as he keeps writing music like this.

But really, gay + die-hard christian... must be difficult to reconcile.

Finally, what's with all rumors of him & Kristina previously dating, and now Rosie Thomas of CoCo Rosie? Anyone know anything about this???

Posted by me | October 7, 2006 6:31 PM

Wasn't Michael Jackson married to Lisa Marie Presley and wasn't Elton John originally married to a female?

Posted by enquirer | October 7, 2006 9:57 PM

When they were in denial, yes.

Posted by Sigmund | October 8, 2006 12:28 AM

Who was the "special beat-boxing" guest during Shara's set? Thanks.
