Chris Ott's new "Blogwash" column is one of the better things to happen to the Voice lately. I may not always agree with him -- I may even be too dumb to understand what he's talking about, but his seemingly-informed controversial analyses of hot bands are at least thought provoking and interesting reads. Last time he did the Pipettes. This time he talks about The Hold Steady's "subservient debt to Bruce Springsteen", and doesn't seem to agree with "Pitchfork (which I contributed to for years)" for awarding "their new album Boys and Girls in America the site's best rating of the year so far, a 9.4 out of 10."

When were the Hold Steady on the front page of the Voice?
As for the Blogwash article, did you see the item by Rob Harvilla that runs alongside it in the dead-tree edition? It was quite funny.

the Hold Steady album is not that great.
they are now officially grossly overrated.
p-fork has been getting it wrong for most of this year.

nope. pitchfork got it dead on. best album of the year.
but i'm sure you think the fucking rapture record or something equally average is better....fucking indie idiot fuck. How's it feel to be out of touch?

the rapture record is pretty bad and pfork gave it a 7.8, so yeah, they've had some hits and some misses
Posted by hello | October 12, 2006 10:28 AM
a 7.8 for pitchfork is average nowdays....that's all the rapture is.

I think the album is alright, not mind-blowing for me personally. Actually my album of the year is probably no ones, Centro-matic's fort recovery.

finally someone who thinks this band is not the best thing around. because they just aren't. THS? yaaaaaaaawn...

fucking indie idiot fuck
sometimes people get a little too worked up about who likes what band. good lord.
lately pitchfork semi-trashes everything i like, but maybe that's kind of cool. i predict the new portastatic record will get a: 6.1. if i'm right, i get to skip work that day.

that "fucking indie fuck" was a quote from the above guy. i put it in italics, but i guess it doesn't do that. so, just quoting and criticizing the quote. yep. okay.
