Maxwell's in Hoboken is still going strong.....The Pyramid was really cool..very good layout (sort of like a wider Mercury Lounge) I know its still sort of there physically although I havent stepped in over 10 years. I saw some good shows there...Galaxie 500 , Buffalo Tom, Babes In Toyland , etc... the old Knitting Factory on E Houston had a lot of great shows as well.... The Pyramid, CB's, Knitting Factory was pretty much it for small touring bands in late 80's early 90's.. I was never into hardcore so I never went to ABC No Rio or those other places.. There was also the Space at Chase on 2nd & 12th I think ? and The Spiral (which breifly booked good bands) and of course Brownie's but that was more of a mid 90's thing as well as Under Acme..there was also a placed called The Marquee in Chelesea (ln the 20's btw 9/10th?) it lasted about 4 years but everyone played there...I saw Nirvana on Nevermind tour there..capacity wise it was in between Bowery & Irving Plaza in terms of size..and yes The Academy was great ,much bigger place though & Webster Hall was called The Ritz & then the Ritz mived to midtown & Webster Hall was strictly a dance club with a rare concert now & again until about 3 years ago....

Awww..one of the best shows i've been to here in NYC was Avail & Leatherface at the Wetlands. My friend & i drank shots of tequila, shared a slice of pizza with the members of leatherface and f*cking rocked out - even lost my glasses in the pit & didn't care. BTW

I think Coney Island High opened late '95. prior to that it was a gay disco called Boy Bar.

"How'bout King Tut's Wah Wah Hut where Niagra is now"

that space also housed the legendary A7 club, the home of nyhc.

academy ballroom was like irving plaza...national touring acts.

tramps always sucked...i remember seeing lifetime and bouncing souls there in 95.

oh, yeah, Cat Club. owned by don hill.

here's a clipping about CIH from the ny times, dec 28, 1995, written by neil strauss:

CONEY ISLAND HIGH: Since this building at 15 St. Marks Place in the East Village changed from a gay bar to a rock club in February, it has been creating a loyal and growing glam-rock scene for the pierced, tattooed and leather-clad. Owned and operated by members of D Generation and other local rock bands, Coney Island High has graduated from booking local bands to national acts, including recent surprise shows by Iggy Pop and the Beastie Boys.

downtown beiruit? wasn't that on 1st ave?

Posted by cs | October 17, 2006 1:01 PM

The Show Place in Dover NJ had some very great moments. I used to see all the great Jersey bands open up for all the touring acts. GBH, D.K.s, Black AND White Flag, Bad Brains. One of my good friends saw Devo the night after they were on SNL for crying out loud!
