The Horrors on NME I haven't even had a chance to properly listen to The Horrors yet, but everyone I know keeps asking me about them. All signs point towards them being the next big band to hate. Anyway, I hope I can catch them at least once while they're here visiting NYC:

Those songs on their Myspace page are completely unremarkable. Nothing that you can't hear countless other garage bands doing. At first I thought the song Jack The Ripper sounded kind of cool, but then I realised that they basically just jacked the bassline from The Strokes' Juicebox.

i saw them in london the other night. and yes, they are fun to hate. because they are so bad and so dreadful and so over the top and so...HALLOWEEN-esque...that it's almost fun!! but beware of the lead singer when he jumps into the crowd. that's all i'll say.

they are...... dire! and so far they've only written 7 songs, 20 minutes and they're off - it'd almost be okay if they were good..... but no.

The label paid for the cover story on NME.

all i've heard is the song in that video and it sounds like the Strokes trying to cover Sonic Youth. it's not the worst thing in the world but it doesn't really grab me at all - the video, however, is pretty rad, simple as it is.

Jack The Ripper is actually a cover of Screaming Lord Sutch. It was a minor UK hit in the early 60's.

Sutch was an over-the-top goth rock'n'roll performer and went on to run, several times, for Prime Minister as head of The Raving Monster Loony Party.

the song without the video is rather weak, but the video is kind of fun... maybe i'm just in the halloween mood

Will rock music ever move past the look and sound of the 70's? Radiohead can't do it alone

Never heard of them before now... they sound pretty cool though!

two great posts here.
first this guy:

"Jack The Ripper is actually a cover of Screaming Lord Sutch. It was a minor UK hit in the early 60's.

Sutch was an over-the-top goth rock'n'roll performer and went on to run, several times, for Prime Minister as head of The Raving Monster Loony Party"

this guy just played the perfect pretentious, asshole i know lots of trivial bullshit guy so well.

and then this one:

"Will rock music ever move past the look and sound of the 70's? Radiohead can't do it alone"

you are a fucking dork.

well the "Radiohead can't do it alone" part was kind of a joke. But I think there are only a handful of rock / indie rock bands that are pushing past the 70's. The whole genre is stagnant

THE MUMMIES = KINGS OF BUDGET ROCK

THE HORRORS = HIGH PRICED P.R. BULLSHIT ROCK

plus The Horrors ripped off their name from:

I mention Lord Sutch because I actually did know him back in the day, and am gratified to find there's a great clip of his version:

Also, that bass line isn't The Strokes it's Duane Eddy - Peter Gunn, right?
