watch new Videos
Watch new (or newish) videos by (or featuring) The Foundry Field Recordings, Tow Waits, Sufjan Stevens, Micah P. Hinson, CSS, Johnny Cash, Cat Power, Death Vessel, Stuart Staples, Mew, and The Decemberists.
---
The Decemberists - "16 Military Wives" live sing-along @ Hammerstein (CMJ)
The rest below....
The Foundry Field Recordings - "Holding the Pilots/Holding the Facts"
Tom Waits - "Lie to Me"
Sufjan Stevens - Put The Lights On The Tree
"Music Video for Sufjan Stevens' "Put The Lights On The Tree," animated by Tom Eaton. Starring the Michigan Militia, the Swans, the Illinoisemakers, Sufjan Stevens, and Grandma."

Micah P. Hinson - "Diggin a Grave (live @ Indie 103.1)"
Johnny Cash - Gods Gonna Cut You Down
"There are 36 cameos throughout the black & white video, including Iggy Pop, Bono, Justin Timberlake, Jay Z, Keith Richards, Johnny Depp, Dixie Chicks, Terrence Howard, Patti Smith, Dennis Hopper and Chris Rock. Each artist is dressed in black to honor Cash."
Kanye West, Chris Martin, Flea, Kate Moss, Woody Harrelson, Lisa Marie Presley, Kid Rock, and ZZ Top are also in there. And oddly so is Corinne Bailey Rae. (I mean the record label probably got her in there so its not that odd from that point of view).
Cansei de Ser Sexy (CSS) - "Alala (live @ BrooklynVegan day show)"
Cat Power - "Lived In Bars"
Death Vessel - "Deep In The Horchada" (live @ Suite Lorraine)
Mew - "Special"
Stuart Staples - "That Leaving Feeling"

La Rocca's van and gear stolen in Philly
While immersed in CMJ nonsense, I almost missed an email alerting me to yet another Philly gear theft. This time the band is Ireland's La Rocca who recently toured with Phoenix, and whose new record is out on dangerbird (home of Silversun Pickups).

BIG PHIL STOLEN IN BIG BAD PHILLY
After a great show with Roman Candle and Birdmonster in Philadelphia last night, we came out of our hotel this morning to find Big Phil was gone, along with all of our equipment.
Naturally this is gonna put pay to our shows in D.C and North Carolina.... but on a bigger scale we've lost some stuff that's been with us since we were kids.
If anyone in the Philly area sees or gets offered anything suspicious that they think might once have been ours.. a lot of our stuff has LAROCCA stencilled on it.... let us know.

Matt Tong suffered a collapsed lung - Bloc Party not playing with PATD! @ MSG & elsewhere

"Bloc Party have been forced to cancel a number of shows on their current US tour with Panic! At The Disco after drummer Matt Tong was admitted to hospital in Atlanta with a collapsed lung after last night's performance."
"Doctors at the hospital in Atlanta say Matt is in a comfortable condition and not in any danger, he will however be staying in hospital for at least the next three days for observation and it's not clear at this stage when Matt will be fit to resume performing.
The band will definitely not be playing at the Charlotte, NC (Cricket Arena), Fairfax, VA (Patriot Center) and both New York Madison Square Garden shows in the coming week."

DAVID BYRNE & FORRO IN THE DARK @ JOES PUB, NYC | NOV 8, 2006 (CRED)

"Sat in at Joe’s with Mauro’s band, Forró In The Dark, last night. It was a show to celebrate the release of their record [see Voice review] so all the guest artists who appeared on the CD were on stage — Bebel Gilberto, Miho Hatori and myself. Forró (pronounced: foe ho) is a style of Brazilian regional music, linked to the harsh life of the sertao — the plains of the northeast. It sounds a little like Zydeco, the style from Louisiana that is also accordion-driven and wildly danceable. In Mauro’s group the accordion is replaced by flute and sometimes pifano (a wooden flute)." [David Byrne]

The dismantling of CBGB

"To help him with the five-day process of packing up the club, Kristal has hired Aurora Productions, a New York theatrical production management company that specializes in the construction and disassembly of Broadway stage sets. They're breaking everything down, and once Hilly has secured a destination, they'll rebuild it as best they can. Days before the dismantling commenced, every square inch of CBGB's interior was photographed to help with the impending re-creation; each piece of the club that's removed is labeled, so the team that does the rebuild knows what goes where. The process is something between a crime-scene investigation and an archeological dig." [MTV]

APB reissue music - playing 4 area shows
APB | 2006 TOUR DATES
Sat Dec 09 - Loop Lounge (Passaic, NJ)
Thu Dec 14 - Union Hall (Brooklyn)
Fri Dec 15 - Knitting Factory (NYC)
Sat Dec 16 - Molly Blooms 2 (Amityville, LI)
THE PRESS RELEASE
"If you were a dance-punk growing up on alternative radio (WLIR, WHTG) on the east coast in the mid to late 80's, you remember Scotland's APB. 'Shoot You Down' is as classic to most modern rockers in the tri-State area as anything from the Cure, Gang Of Four, New Order, or Wire. Their NYC shows at the Ritz are the stuff legend is made of. Let's remind ourselves, however, that they are very much a cult classic, more underground than anything, and nearly obscure anywhere west of the Mississippi. Their only collection of singles on cd, 1989's 'Something To Believe In' sold and went quickly out of print. Prices fetched as high as $200 on Ebay until recently when NYC label Young American re-issued it with a bonus disc."
"APB's brand of funked up pop dance has seemingly influenced bands like Franz Ferdinand, Hot Hot Heat, and more. So, it comes with great pride and perhaps a bit of surprise and awe that we can announce to you, the legendary APB are coming back to the States for a handful of intimate shows for their diehard fans in celebration of their recent re-issued recordings. And when we say intimate, we mean it, the venues are cozy! The core trio of Iain Slater, Glenn Roberts, and George Cheyne, will make a very rare and long awaited return this December."

Elvis Perkins blew DJ David Bruno away....JK from Metro Distortion: not so much.
"Elvis Perkins was raised in Los Angeles and New York City. Work on Ash Wednesday began in 2002 -- Elvis (his real name) originally had help from his actor-musician brother Osgood on drums and friend Ethan Gold who produced the album. Since that time his band has grown to include Brigham Brough (bass) and Nicholas Kinsey (drums) both of whom played on the album as well as Wyndham Boylan-Garnett (keyboardist/guitarist)."

Wes' Weekly Hip Hop News Roundup | (Nov 09, 2006)

Hip Hop's first ever Grammy Award winners DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince are set to re-unite for a tour.
VH1 features Raekwon and shares a little nugget: Dr. Dre will be handling the lion's share of the production on Cuban Linx 2.
The Game's remix of One Blood is available all over the place. It features Jim Jones, Snoop Dogg, Nas, T.I., Fat Joe, Lil' Wayne, Nore, Jadakiss, Styles P, Fabolous, Juelz Santana, Rick Ross, Twista, Kurupt, Daz, WC, E-40, Bun B, Chamillionaire, Slim Thug, Young Dro, Clipse and Ja Rule. That's no joke. Go get it at Idolator. Read an entertaining interview over at SmokingSection.
Jay-Z is getting closer to oversaturation in the news right now, but here is an excellent post with full tracklist and details on how many discs there will actually be on this release. He also plans on touring eight cities in one day. "Four of the eight cities, including Washington, Atlanta, Chicago and Las Vegas, have been confirmed so far."
Nas had a song featured in Scorcese's The Departed which featured Leonardo DiCaprio who in turn has a new film coming out next month called Blood Diamonds which will be scored by Nas. Listen to new song Hip Hop Is Dead featuring Will.I.Am (WMA).
The new Eminem Shady Radio mixtape with Clinton Sparks is pretty great. Get it over at NahRight. Tracklist with featured artists available here. They also have Eminem's new video.
Ghostface Killah's upcoming new album More Fish will drop December 12th. Listen to new song Good (WMA) (Does anyone even listen to WMA files? Just go get the MP3 here).
Fat Joe's new album Me, Myself & I is very solid with a few great tracks. Read an interview here.
Miami's very own Pitbull releases El Mariel. AOL has the full album stream. Additionally, read Pitbull's guest blog over at XXL.
They also have the new Birdman & Lil' Wayne album Like Father, Like Son streaming.
RJD2 leaves Hip Hop with his new upcoming album. An "epic pop/rock album" is supposedly coming next year. Preview a track over at his myspace.
Canadian rapper K-OS is set to release a new album.
Redman and Raekwon will headline Rock The Bells North American Tour.

free NYPress show & Tenacious D tickets & alcohol
Remember that NY Press 'battle of the bands' I was telling you about? Well, the bands were chosen (Locksley, Hepburn, The GoStation, Day Glow, and The Picture), and it goes down this Monday November 13th at Avalon (assuming it stays open), and everyone that shows up gets a free ticket to see the new Tenacious D movie, and there's a "select open bar".... SIX DEGREES OF JENS LEKMAN
Like Frida Hynvonen and Jose Gonzalez before her (on this blog), Sarah Assbring, aka El Perro Del Mar, is a sweet sounding Swedish musician who is friends with Jens Lekman. In fact, Jens & Sarah released a split-EP together on Secretly Canadian in 2004. Jens talked about her and Jose in the interview we did here on BrooklynVegan. Jose and her have toured together. She of course also knows the Concretes, etc, etc...
"NEW" SELF-TITLED ALBUM
And like Jens Lekman, her most recent LP is a compilation of singles and EP's. The self-titled debut album came out in Sweden in May 2005. It came out here in the USA thanks to Memphis Industries in August...or is it thanks to the Control Group in November?...either way it's out now. Pitchfork gave it an impressive 8.1 in June. I'm listening to it as I write this, and I like it a lot too.
Songs:Illinois says, "These songs sound like they're right out of an early 60's film soundtrack". Good description. Listen at MySpace or at this e-card thing and watch this live video and this not-live video....and if you're in NYC check her out for yourself....
EL PERRO DEL MAR | 2006 NYC TOUR DATES
Nov 12 @ Zebulon (Brooklyn) w/ The Raven Mayhem
Nov 13 @ Joe's Pub (Manhattan) w/ Emilie Simon
Nov 14 @ Union Hall (Brooklyn) w/ Jaymay
Nov 16 @ Mercury Lounge (Manhattan) w/ Evangelicals & Annuals
THIS TIME IT WILL BE BETTER
In a June 2006 interview with Lunapark6, she said, "Last year I went to New York. I was kind of expecting to fall headoverheels in love with the city but I didn’t. I still haven’t figured out why. May have been because of the heat and the humidity. I tend to be overly irritated when it’s hot. I don’t know. I really like New York, but it wasn’t love at first sight. Think I need to go back there when it’s fall or winter." I hope she likes it better this time.
PETER BJORN & PEACOCKS
She also says in the above interview that she loves Peter Bjorn & John. She reiterates that love in a recent Pitchfork feature. And lastly here's a picture of El Perro Del Mar and a peacock.

The Hold Steady @ The Annex, NYC (CMJ) | pics & remix MP3
DOWNLOAD: The Hold Steady - Killer Parties (remix) (MP3)
The Hold Steady played an unannounced high-energy 45-minute set at the Annex in NYC Friday evening (Friday November 3rd). It was a CMJ-like party sponsored by the Orchard. Scanners, Dirty On Purpose, and Cold War Kids also on the bill - it was the perfect way to end a long CMJ day.

Rolling Stone writes, "The band tore through a handful of mostly new tunes (including our official favorite song of 2006 'Massive Nights' and the always awesome 'Stevie Nix') while passing around a bottle of Jack, sweating and singing most of the lyrics vaguely near a microphone. How does a band this loose stay this tight?"
I was also especially excited to hear them play 'Chips Ahoy' -- I missed their most recent record release show at Irving Plaza. The next next chance to see them locally is at Warsaw with the Constantines on November 22nd.

Stereogum and Yeti were there too.
After the show I went home, only to return to the Annex first thing the next morning.
THE HOLD STEADY ON KIMMEL THIS FRIDAY
"The New York hipster favorites will hit the Los Angeles studios of ABC's Jimmy Kimmel Live Friday (Nov. 10), to play what's tipped as a 'mini-concert.'" [Aversion]

Cloud Cult @ Knitting Factory (Nov 06), NYC | pics

Cloud Cult returned to the Knitting Factory Monday night (Nov 6, 2006) for a post-CMJ last-minute early show (9:30 pm headlining slot). I was worried nobody would show up, but there were at least 75 diehards there to witness the heartfelt show that featured two live painters, coordinated video projections (that included fractals, babies, cars and insects), a smoke machine, trippy rave lights, and free mushrooms. Okay, just kidding about the psilocybin, but I'm definitely starting to wonder about those seemingly innocent bunch of fine folk from Minneapolis. On a serious note, the show was great as always - they played a bunch of new songs too, and the paintings they created during their 90 minutes on stage were beautiful.

After the show, audience members get to bid on the paintings. I heard the skeleton one went for $175, and that the pair sold for $400 at their Mercury Lounge CMJ show. Seems like a killing, but supposedly in other towns the paintings routinely go for closer to $300 each (cheap New Yorkers we are!). Not a bad way for a band to make some extra cash while on the road.

After the show I ran to Bowery Ballroom just in time to catch Voxtrot's 2nd or 3rd song.
Another review @ Indilicious.

Les Savy Fav @ MoMA, NYC | pics

I went to the Les Savy Fav show at the Museum of Modern Art last night (Nov 7, 2006). There was an open bar and they asked for your cell phone at the door. If you gave it up they hung it on a wall for all to see. By "they" I mean people in white radiation-like outfits who later dressed up like crooks and pretended to steal art. I guess the art of the whole thing worked because every few seconds I checked my pocket wondering where my cell phone was. Honestly though the wall seemed more like a coat check, but for phones.

To make sure you got your phone back, a unique claim number was printed on a bracelet that you wore until you picked up your phone at the end of the night. The end of the night for me came after Les Savy Fav played their set, but I think the DJ'd party went on for another hour. The sound suct, Tim's cordless mic didn't work, and there were some annoying security guards, but overall it was a good show. I didn't bring a camera, so thanks to Suckapants for these pictures.

Voxtrot @ Bowery Ballroom, NYC (night 1) | pics
DOWNLOAD: Voxtrot - Trouble (MP3)
Voxtrot played their first of two shows at NYC's Bowery Ballroom Monday night (November 6, 2006). I would say it was their biggest NYC show yet, but I already said that when they opened for TV on the Radio in Prospect Park.
You only had to be 18 to get in, and the largely (and large) under-21 crowd joyously turned a potentially-arms-crossed voyeuristic gathering into a dance party reminiscent of the band's SXSW show at Factory People. Everyone was singing along too - it was extra fun.

I love crowd interaction, so the highlight of the show had to be when two kids from the audience jumped on stage and started spastically dancing. Suprisingly (and thankfully) it took security a while to notice and remove them. Then during the encore even more dancing people stormed the stage from the side door - and they were allowed to stay. Voxtrot was playing "Trouble" at the time - the 2nd song on their new 3-song EP (download above). They're not afraid to be experimental or sound unpolished on stage - besides Trouble they also did a few new-new songs - some of which sounded nothing like traditional Voxtrot.

Overall the band looked confident and happy on stage, and I think Ramesh keeps growing as a frontman while managing to stay completely down to Earth. That was especially evident when he invited the whole crowd to join him afterwards at the afterparty (thrown and DJ'd by Finger on the Pulse). It was just too bad that most people at Bowery Ballroom that night weren't old enough to get in to Fat Baby where it was being held.

How was the second night? - I know that one was 21+. Music Snobbery says, "legal people in da house!"

Finally Punk and Annuals opened the show, but I was over at Knitting Factory catching the early-ish 9:30 Cloud Cult show.

Hilly Kristal @ the 2006 CMJ CBGB reunion

Two days after CBGB owner Hilly Kristal finished vacating his club on the Bowery, CMJ managed to get him on stage in front of badge-holding CMJ attendees. They billed it like this:
CBGB: The Ultimate Reunion (November 2): Famous alumni of CBGB gather to reminisce about the legendary club how it made a difference in their lives and changed the face of music. This reunion will be a fond look back at one of the most influential music venues in rock history. This panel is moderated by journalist/author Legs McNeil. Panelists include: Blondie co-founder/guitarist Chris Stein; original Ramones drummer Tommy Ramone;the Smithereens lead singer Pat DiNizio; CBGB owner/founder Hilly Kristal; Bad Brains bass player Darryl Jenifer; photographer Roberta Bayley, and others.

Some things I learned:
- Everything Hilly was able to salvage from the original club is in storage in CT - the bar, walls, toilets, stage, etc.
- He confirmed that everything will eventually find its way to Vegas where he feels more welcome - specifically he said (again) that Las Vegas' mayor is more welcoming than NYC's mayor. That's fine, but should all of NYC be "punished" because of the actions of the mayor?
- The new CBGB will be in the old section of Las Vegas which he compared to the East Village
- I figured they would turn CBGB into something like Hard Rock Cafe or Planet Hollywood. In fact, Hilly specifically mentioned that he will never sell the club just to make sure it never resembles the Hard Rock Cafe. Naively or not, he envisions the new CBGB to be much like the old one - a place where any band coming through Las Vegas can stop in and play. That's awesome, but hopefully he doesn't also envision horrible smells and toilets without stalls around them.

Dave Hill hosted 2 BrooklynVegan CMJ shows & talked to Gothamist + a picture of Cadence Weapon outside Fontana's
I just want to thank "writer, performer, musican", illusionist, stripper, contortionist Dave Hill again for being an awesome host at the first two BrooklynVegan CMJish day shows last week. Check out an interview he did for Gothamist on Monday.
DAVE HILL & BV FLYERS - UPSTAIRS @ FONTANA'S, NYC | NOV 3, 2006

It's hard to have to speak, let alone do comedy, at a rock show, and (strangely) Dave handled it like a pro. He was even graceful when bands like Forward Russia! and CSS failed to acknowledge his announced presence at the foot of the stage - they began their sets before he could say anything (not their fault really).
I was always running around, so I didn't catch all of his bits over the course of the two days, but I was luckily there Friday for the hilarious exchange he had with Edmonton rapper and Canada's fifth hottest band Cadence Weapon downstairs at Fontana's. Stereogum heard it too.
CADENCE WEAPON & DJ OUTSIDE FONTANA'S, NYC | NOV 3, 2006

Cadence Weapon played at Fontana's before Oxford Collapse who played before the Thermals. I took the above picture after he played, and after Dave Hill was done abusing him, and before he and his DJ took off to soundcheck for their gig later that night at Mercury Lounge.

Fugazi - Full Disclosure
The Evens - No Money
MACKAYE: I heard that. But no, as a matter of fact it’s kind of funny; I’m actually kind of tired of hearing about CBGB because there was a big hoopla about their 25th anniversary. They were doing a movie and they had all these bands play there like The Cramps and at some point someone called up Fugazi and asked us if we would play there for the anniversary. But Fugazi had never played there because at the time CB’s wouldn’t do a proper all ages show. They would do 16 and up and we said, “No it has to be for everybody.” And they said, “No, we’re not going to do that.” So we said “All right, we’ll play somewhere else.” And we did.
So when this guy called me he said, “Fugazi should definitely play here, you’re such a part of the spirit of the place.” But we never played there and they wouldn’t do an all ages show back when we called them. It was just funny.
I don’t really have any beef to CBGB; it’s just a place. I’m glad that people have tipped their hat to the significance of that music but if they really want to honor a place like CBGB they should be looking out for the little rooms where incredible music is being made right now. The bands that are together today are always more important than the music of yesterday; they can actually do something.

NY Times talks more about the closing of Northsix
"The club, which was one of the first of a wave of music places to open in Brooklyn, and an early hub in the Williamsburg music scene in the heady days when bands like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs were becoming famous, is getting ready to close — sort of. It is scheduled to shut for an extensive renovation at the end of January and reopen a few months later as the Music Hall of Williamsburg, owned by the Bowery Presents, the company that puts on music shows at the Bowery Ballroom, the Mercury Lounge and Webster Hall, all in Manhattan." Van She - Kelly
Van She - Kelly (Cut Copy Remix)
"Whenever some critic says that 80s revival is over, a band like Van She comes out of no where just to prove them wrong." [Big Stereo]
I should have been dead by Saturday night (November 4, 2006), but somehow I managed to sneak in a few more shows before going home and sleeping until Sunday afternoon. One of those shows was the Modular Records CMJ showcase at Club Midway. The band was Australia's Van She who followed their also-good label-mates from California --> The Soft Lightes. At first Van She turned me off with their (slightly outdated?) attempt to look hip & ironic.....

...but then I remembered not to judge a book by its cover (and that they're from Australia), and I realized that the sweet sounds coming from the stage were quite real. It all worked up to their their last two songs which completely won me over and left me wanting more. My friend and I agreed that the songs would work in a stadium just as well, if not better, than they came across in the dingy basement of Midway.
And ther IS more to be had - of both The Soft Lightes and Van She - TONIGHT (Nov 6) @ Mercury Lounge in NYC. Who knows when they'll be back in the States again - its just too bad that tonight also offers Voxtrot/Annuals @ Bowery Ballroom AND Cloud Cult @ Knitting Factory.

If you can't make the show tonight, or even if you can, you can at least watch the YouTube video for "Kelly" (where they also happen to look much more respectable) from the comfort of your own home .
Palms Out Sounds has the MP3 of the "reprise" version of "Kelly".
And there's more music streaming at Van She's MySpace and on their regular website.

The Thermals @ Fontana's (BrooklynVegan day show), NYC | pics & more CMJ reviews
DOWNLOAD: The Thermals - How We Know (MP3)
NYC had been anxiously awaiting the return of the Thermals, and the Thermals finally delivered with not one or two, but three NYC shows in two CMJ days. All three shows were well attended, well played (or so they say), well reviewed, and much appreciated.
THE THERMALS @ FONTANAS, NYC | NOV 3, 2006

And I know not one or two, but at least three people that attended (or tried to attend) all three shows - we were especially hungry for the band from Portland - especially since they skipped NYC on their most recent tour with Cursive because....they had a wedding to attend back home. All is forgiven though, and all will be even better after the Thermals come back some time in the first half of 2007 during their first headlining tour (dates TBA) since releasing one of 2006's best (or so they say), but not much talked-about, albums.

"When social hour ended, we went upstairs where we were treated to insanely good performances from CSS, The Thermals, The Album Leaf, and the perennially wonderful boys from Portland known as (guess….) The Shins." [Loudersoft @ Bowery]
"Punk-rockers the Thermals sweated buckets and stayed biblical with an aggressive, exhilarating set at Sub Pop's Bowery Ballroom showcase." [SPIN]
"The Portland pop-punk trio, augmented by second guitarist Joel Burrows, blazed through the most electrifying set I've ever seen them play, making up for various technical snafus with atomic amounts of energy. Bassist Kathy Foster bounced around the stage in a riot grrrl-era dress, while singer/guitarist Hutch Harris took advantage of Burrows to unleash his inner showman, gesticulating wildly and sweating up a storm." [Pitchfork @ Bowery]
"Brooklyn Vegan Day-time show with Cadence Weapon (meh), Oxford Collapse (rad), and The Thermals (soo rad! heart! heart! heart!)." [Pavla @ Fontana's]
"Of course the older songs inspired some serious sing-alongs and fist-pumping. Hot." [Sub-inev @ Fontana's]
"The first full act I saw was The Thermals. By the time the Portland act came on, Studio B was completely packed." [Music slut]
"Best Set - The Thermals @ Studio B" [Battering Room]
"The Thermals played a great set of good, clean-sounding pop punk. [A Big Big Love @ Studio B]
"The Thermals were amazing and people were going absolutely nuts for them!" [The Likely Broads @ Studio B]
"The Thermals from Portland, OR will probably become a well-known indie rock band in a few months ... if not already" [Music Snobbery @ Studio B]

A big thanks to the Thermals for playing the BrooklynVegan show - and all the shows - and thanks to everyone who attended.

"Ambitious indie rockers Cloud Cult are following the release of last year's Advice From the Happy Hippopotamus with another sprawling LP: The Meaning of 8, and if the song titles are any indication, it's an 18-track-long meditation on mortality. The Meaning of 8 is scheduled for a late February release on the band's own Earthology Records, though they are also in talks with labels about co-releasing and distributing the record." [Pitchfork]
Heartonastick has a new song for download.
