The reader comments in that VV piece are great.
Posted by jerry | November 15, 2006 8:36 AM
oh well... he's a big boy making lots of money. Oh, wait, I'm sure he doesn't want the money...
Posted by B | November 15, 2006 10:49 AM
If my girlfriend ever went on a comments section to defent my honor, I'd be horrified. Nice going Carson, before I thought your boy colin was just a partial pussy. But you just convinced me he's the real deal.
Posted by canklesweat | November 15, 2006 11:35 AM
Someone should tell that Carson girl that just because you have some "star's" semen running down your throat, that doesn't imply you are also a star. If the Decemberists really do hit it big, she probably will be history.
While I agree with the VV review, I did not care for the writing style. The Decemberists have been getting a bit pompous, but then again, it's the only reason why they are getting popular. Bloggers looking for the next big thing, applying whatever labels they can find.

Colin's girlfriend has to step up and get in critics's face? weak.
if my girlfriend did that, man i'd.....wait i dont have a girlfriend...but i'd bet if i stopped listening to Colin Meloy and stopped spending so much time leaving comments on blogs i'd have a better chance of getting one!
Posted by Big Daddy | November 15, 2006 3:28 PM
That last comment was one of most offensive things I have ever read. You don't know Carson, you don't know Colin and for you to make generalizations and absolutly innapropriate comments about them is just plain wrong. Grow up, you are not a good person, at all...
BV, maybe activating the comments wasn't such a good idea with all the immature douche bags on here.
Andrew (not anonymous, you pussy)
Posted by Andrew | November 15, 2006 3:28 PM
of course your comment didnt mean me, but to criticize a poster for being immature and then calling him a "pussy" kinda ruins your credability.
the comment boards are for saying what's on one's mind without censorship and not to be take so seriously
Posted by Big Daddy | November 15, 2006 3:47 PM
A "wartime" band? thankfully this VV article exposes the truth about this silly band that has no relevence in the current political situation.
History show that the Great Musical Talents simply ignore the critics and provide great music and shows for their fans. Meloy attacks the VV critic "within three hours" of the articles posting? and then get's his woman to do the same? is he parnoid that someone might expose him?
Posted by Colon's Ploy | November 15, 2006 3:49 PM
Daddy~
I don't think anyone has cred here (its just a message board, right?), but mentioning someone you don't even know swallowing cum is just plain bad taste and very rude... It's sad you don't see that.

I agree his message was in bad taste. i was pointing out that your posting was equally so
Posted by Big Daddy | November 15, 2006 4:26 PM
settle down Andrew... it's just a message board, right? Geez--if everyone always agreed with you and/or had the same opinions and expressed them the same way, this world (and this site) would be pretty damn boring.

Holy Hissy Fit! Andrew, pluck the panties from your crack and relax bro bro. We're talking music here folks. Noone's saving lives here. If someone thinks that Collin is a pussy for either enlisting, or at the very list, allowing his girlfriend to go toe to toe with a music critic in a comments section, so be it. Who gives a crap? Its good reading. Just like me calling that dude zach from beirut a pussy because he got tired on his first tour is good reading. Poor thing. Snack on that folks.

what u talkin' bout willis?

why when i was your age we didnt have message boards....we had to insult rock stars to their face...and they liked it!

I think it's really lame that some of you are saying things like, "if that were my girlfriend" or "how could he allow his girlfriend to do that". What the fuck is wrong with you guys? Did you ever consider that she wrote those comments all by herself? Believe it or not, women sometimes do things without the permission of their boyfriends!
I agree that it was a little immature of her to air her feelings in such a public way, but I also agree completely with her grievances. Also, whoever said that things about semen running down her throat is a fucking asshole.
The real problem with Ott's article is that he levels the same old tired criticisms against Meloy without adding anything new to the discussion. He just went out of his way to insult them. I'm just glad everyone realizes how out of line he was with this article.
Posted by Patrick | November 15, 2006 6:40 PM
Not everyone. quite a few of us think it about time Colin was exposed for his lack of talent and if he can't take a little criticism he's clearly not quite secure with the legitimacy of his own art...
and i think the comments "if that were my girlfriend" etc, were just a joke...

Who cares what the lyrics are about anyway...are we going to dissect Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds now?

I had my girlfriend complain to people magazine because I wasn't voted sexiest man alive this year!
Posted by notgeorgeclooney | November 15, 2006 10:15 PM
Meloy is a twat who deserved a good skewering. Let us hope he crawls off to a laird somewhere, Morrissey collection in hand, and never records again.

this guy on the street call me a homo-somthing and then my girlfriend told him he should just go home and listen to his michael jackson albums
god i love that woman!
Posted by Anonymous | November 16, 2006 1:35 AM
If he called you a homo-something, he must've mistook your girlfriend for a dude.
Posted by jus' sayin' | November 16, 2006 11:20 AM
Wow, I don't know who is shittier at their profession - Chris Ott or the Decemberists. They should go into business.
Posted by krebstar | November 16, 2006 12:11 PM
Hahaha, I gotta agree that it's pretty lame for someone's girlfriend/boyfriend to go fighting battles for her/his other half on message boards. However, if my girlfriend was belittled by someone, I too would seek to protect her, perhaps even to such an irrational and slightly embarrassing degree. Here's to love and how it makes us do crazy things. It's kinda cute if you really think about it.

Chris Ott is the motherf@#$ing man!
He hit on the same points that Rad Company hit on in their piece about Pitchfork dissing Surfin' Bird in it's top 200 of 60's (hit the link on my name).
False Depression Wes Anderson costume music is so fake.
I'm getting so tired of seeing yet another cutesy period peice photo shoot of the Decemberists eveywhere I look.
Oh look, they're playing Clue! Oh, here they are dressed like 19th century cops and robbers!
What's next, raising Edward Gorey from the grave to draw them?
Posted by Bodega Noriega | November 16, 2006 1:54 PM
Bodeiga, can I hit on your point about Chris Ott

I don't think any of the journo's comments should've seen the light of day or were discussed here and everywhere else. The attacks were personal, which means the review and the reviewer were rotten.
As for somebody's girlfriend taking sides - you probably wish your girlfriend cared enough about you to do the same. All the scum making filthy jokes about her were most likely raised by filthy parents.
Posted by Alizee | November 16, 2006 3:13 PM
Alizee, that was a personal attack.
Posted by Anonymous | November 16, 2006 5:10 PM
"Alizee, that was a personal attack."
LOL How can you personally attack somebody Anonymous?
Posted by Alizee | November 16, 2006 5:49 PM
Love makes people do funny, silly things. They both look like tools, but I'd rather have someone care for me, as Alizee stated, then look cool.
I also agree that the article was particularly vicious - written with a thesaurus and a snarl.
Posted by Anonymous | November 16, 2006 5:58 PM
Not one word in that "review" about the music. I couldn't care less about:
the scalper outside
the "faux-British" introduction
whether they are a "wartime band"
the pronounciation of "tain"
how fast their guitar changes were
how "literal" Meloy's "tales" are
whether Meloy is "embarassed" to be from Montana
how Irish Meloy "really" is
What a waste of bandwidth and paper that "review" was.
Posted by voiceless | November 16, 2006 6:45 PM
Don't you know actual music critisism is dead? Who wants to read somebody describe what a guitar sounds like AGAIN. It's more important to describe the substance of the experience.
That article was pretty ballsy for the Voice. For all the praise that band gets, it's nice to see some of the critisism only heard in private being printed. Pretty real.
Posted by hello | November 16, 2006 7:53 PM
Pretty real? You must be Ott's girl/boy friend (or Ott himself)? If the reviewer can't do anything better than make up criticism he/she shouldn't waste our time...
By the way:
"toyn" is the correct pronunciation not "torn"...
from the ny times:
IRISH EPIC ''A Prelude to the Tain'' opens at La Mama E.T.C. tonight. This dramatic production is being presented by the Blackthorn Theater of the Committee on Irish Ethnicity. The drama is an adaptation of the Irish epic ''Tain Bo Cuailnge,'' pronounced toyn-bo-cool-nyeh....
from the "weekly wire":
As with the Iliad, the Tain (pronounced "toyn") centers upon an abduction.

i'm completely appalled by the disgusting sexist comments made here. Obviously, you feel manhood is threatened and women should not be able to express their opinions. Your comment about ""star's" semen running down your throat" is offensive and violent.
