The Onion's Annual Obligatory Party
Saturday, December 16, 2006 - 8:00pm
@ Union Hall (702 Union St. at 5th Ave.), Park Slope, Brooklyn

"We love fake news. First the good people at The Daily Show throw a concert/party and give all of the proceeds to 826NYC, and now, exactly one month later the good people at The Onion are throwing a concert/party and giving all of the proceeds to 826NYC. The Onion's Annual Obligatory Pary is a holiday blow-out featuring performances by Sloan, David Cross, Whitest Kids 'U Know, Jessica Rose & The Hi-Life, and Found Footage Festival's Holiday Collection. We hear there will also be DJs, raffles, food and drinks—all for a mere $15 requested donation. Again, the proceeds come to support our programs." [826NYC] (thx Klaus)

UPDATE: Per the Onion, this is a private event. THE RSVP is now closed, sorry.

The above Sloan MP3 is one of thirty tracks appearing on their new album out January 7th on Yep Roc. Sloan are also playing some other dates in January.

The Daily Show concert/party was weak, so I will be skeptical about anything put on by 826NYC. TDS correspondents were not funny (some were actuallt being heckled because they were so terrible) and no appearances by Stewart or Cobert.

The only thing that saved that concert was the very late set by Superchunk.

Slack motherfuckers to the fullest.

826NYC just got some money. That show was put on by The Daily Show. This one is by the Onion.

Um, who is Jessica Rose and the Hi-life? Is it that Loney Girl 15 chick? She has a band? I'd pay to see that. maybe buy her a drink and make fun of that daniel dweeb.

Just got this email today...after getting a RSVP confirmation last week:

Hi. Sorry to bother you and apologize in advance for any awkwardness, but it
has come to our attention that the invitation to the private Onion Holiday
Charity Party was erroneously reposted on some blog sites (like Brooklyn
Vegan) and has been forwarded on to friends of friends of friends.

Would you be so kind as to remind me from whom at the Onion you got your
invite?

Thank you and we apologize in advance if it turns out your were mistakenly
invited as a result and...um...hmmm...not really on the invite list.

Best and Happy Holidays,

Glenn

I just want to fake it until I make it...

Posted by Anonymous | December 13, 2006 4:46 PM

"whats the deal with the daily show and the onion suckin on dave eggers bunyon?"

not to mention David Byrne, Sufjan Stevens, Colin Meloy, Ben Gibbard, Jenny Lewis, etc, etc..

I don't get it, I got that message too. But I saw this advertised on the 826nyc website with a flyer and everything, and when I rsvp's I got a reply saying that we were welcome to come. i'm confused.

Yeah, that makes sense, anonymous commenters -- rag on a charity that helps children. Be nasty to celebrities who donate time to a good cause. Disgusting.

people get so defensive on these discussion boards. whew. i was just calling attention to this yupster trend of indie bands jumping on the childhood literacy bandwagon.

Shouldn't everyone who gets into the Onion party really wish they were at Warsaw watching Chavez?

Posted by J | December 14, 2006 2:09 PM

because Sloan wont be back next month for a proper show, right?! Com'n! see Chavez!

Posted by Anonymous | December 14, 2006 2:38 PM

this is a discussion board?

Posted by Anonymous | December 14, 2006 2:58 PM

I wish I could advertise a show with a great list of acts, hold it in an extremely small space, only to deny everyone at the last minute...

So, for New Year's I'm going to have Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix (tending bar), and Lenny Bruce all in the boiler room at the Gowanus Housing Project. RSVP a must!

By the way, you're not invited.

So did anyone actually get a response back? What's the deal? Can anyone who got an RSVP confirmation get in, or is it definitely a no go?

Posted by Anonymous | December 14, 2006 10:12 PM

I'm going to try to go, but idk it's confusing. I saw it on the 826 website, they have a flier and everything, that says to rsvp...why would they have a flier if it was a private onion party? I'm just gonna show up and try to get in, since I did get a confirmation.
