The new clipse album SUCKS. Can't rely on the Neptunes to deliver everything.

I love how Clipse plays at CMJ and now they get all this buzz in the indie scene. Is it not kind of hilarious? Personally, I think their music sucks, but that's neither here nor there. It's just so god damn random to see them get all this press in the nyc blog scene, like they've somehow differentiated themselves from other groups rapping about the same shit and are now the face of indie hip-hop. I'll get an email from someone saying, "Dude, just a heads-up, Clipse tix are going on sale today" and I'm like, "What? Why are you telling me that? Because they played at CMJ? Do you think they're good? Have you ever even heard their shit? Or are you just telling me that b/c everyone else in the scene is talking about it?"
Clipse is the epitome of internet hype and what it could do for a group. Not saying that it is a bad thing either...just pointing it out.

This is one of the best hip hop shows to hit NYC in a while. All 3 acts represent real hip hop. Not to mention thay are some of the finest lyricists out there. If you don't know you better ask somebody...

the "buzz" in the indie scene surrounding clipse started a few years ago when they dropped a couple of critically acclaimed mix-tapes NOT when they played CMJ.

"Man, I showed up. Pimpin' ya cold up
I head straight to the bar just to post up
I roll the dro up, my cup mold up
Bitch don't just stand there wit ya nose up
C'mon WAMP! WAMP! What it do? (What it do?)
Ha! WAMP! WAMP! What it do? (What it do?)
WAMP! WAMP! What it do? (What it do?)
Ha! WAMP! WAMP! What it do? (What it do?)"
Yeah man...sounds like some "fine" lyrics to me. Give me a break! I'll admit that some of their stuff is alright, but don't go classifying them as fine lyricists, especially if they continue to rap about the most unoriginal shit in hip-hop. If you consider them "fine," then in what category would you put a group with intelligent, original rhymes, like...say...Jurassic 5??
Posted by Anonymous | December 19, 2006 1:47 PM
if you're going to pick on their lyrics, which is fine, at least quote THEIR lyrics. Those are SLIM THUGS lyrics you're quoting.

that clipse album is great. you all need to pull your glocks out of your respective arses.

CLipse is complete gangsta nigga shit. Rapping about bullshit for white kids who dont even understand what they are talking about. I am convinced that people are being paid to say they like this crap. The Lupe album is good, Nas album is ok and MF Doom is always good. But i will never understand how Ghostface and Clipse get listed in best of lists. They may be good at what they do (at least Gface)...but they do not fit in with the rest of the bands/ artists represented in the "blogosphere".
Brooklynvegan...no way a Veggie eating white boy listening (and understanding) gangsta rap. Especially when i look at your end of year list. So please people, unless you really really like Clipse dont post about it anymore...
Posted by my ass | December 19, 2006 2:21 PM
I will never make the arugement that they have good lyrics but I do think the album is really good. It is just fun music to party to.

keys open doors. keys keys open doors
Posted by keys | December 19, 2006 2:36 PM
you are a douchebag if you think that only a certain crowd can listen to a certain type of music...sayin that a white vegan couldnt listen to clipse is almost as pathetic as the tight jeans and awful haircut i know you have.
im a clipse fan, the lyrics are fun...im not going to act like they are some revolutionary poets. the beats are fire though and clipse works well with the production, bottom line.

I'm looking forward to seeing Kidz in the Hall. I thought their show was dope at the Knitting Facotry. Their album is very good too. Can't wait to hear Naledge's solo album on Rawkus.

These guys remind me of Da Band. Awesome!!!

I mean, as usual, these comments help showcase that indie music fans are probably as close minded...actually more, then the mainstream pop music fan.
Clipse is the beneficiary of being 'cool' amoung the blogsphere, as with many of the bands this website covers. So to point out that some of the press they are getting is simply a matter of hype begatting hype isn't too far off base.
However, anyone who even pays a small attention to hip-hop knows that even with gangsta rap, popular hip-hop's interesting wordplay, concepts, and metaphors have taken a backseat to pop friendly hooks, and horribly stripped down but extremely dancable beats.
Even while their topics are negative and not diverse, for anyone who's an unbiased fan of hip-hop, they are currently cream of the crop. I mean, I find it odd(and honestly pretty racist) with how negative some music is in some genre's that hip-hop get singled out. I doubt Slayer has to defend their lyrics to musicologists, because even though its same generic trash metal cliche's, they do it spectacularly and above the rest of their peers. Same with Clipse. This is part of a verse that someone like Young Jeezy would have turned into something like 'We back, and we make crack'. But when they do it, the words just sing:
"Introducing: the Re-Up Gang. The Montage,
the renaissance, the rebirth, the avant garde,
show pa the arm, that causes a nod(?)
still with the whip, follow the brick, I am Oz.
Oh Yes, the wizardry, fire to pot chemistry
the coke calls straight to their souls like a ministry
Like it or not, we kicking the door and picking the lock, and still tossed a big in a pot
Copped the sorbe, straight from Jorge, jack of all trades, even mastered the gourmet,
plus the price got the street tongue in cheek, cook it till its al dente, 'Muah', Magnifique!"
Apologies for that mangled second line, could never hear what they say correctly...

The misguided Clipse hating on this thread is like an early Christmas present. Saying the "indie buzz" started when they played CMJ? Quoting Slim Thug lyrics as Clipse lyrics? Saying Clipse can't headline on "his" own? Good lord, BrooklynVegan fans. Can you at least PRETEND to know something about the shit you're gating on?

Great, here comes the smart-ass comments on my typo.

Although I did like a lot of the new Clipse album I must say I actually think Snoop Dogg's was more consistently awesome. The Clipse collaboration with Baby (What happened to that boy?) and Pusha T's appearance on Young Jeezy's "Movin Weight" mix-tape single are still my favorite things they've done.
Posted by will | December 19, 2006 6:23 PM
I got inside info that Pharrell is appearing a special guest at the show.

People that don't know anything about rap, or haven't listened to it prior to '94, should not be allowed to talk about.
Referring to the Clipse as internet blog hype and CMJ associates it with hipsters who, sorry, they're not writing their music for. The same shit as punk fans upset of others associating their music with emo, is going on here with hip-hop fans and unintelligible (as opposed to those caucasoids who know what the fuck they're talking about) white kids.
I'm selfish though. At the same time, not a big fan of white kids insisting upon "conscious" rap like talib and jurassic five as the only "real hip-hop". Taking the fun out of rap's like taking the synths out of electro-pop, to put it in your terms.
Straight up though, I'd rather leave Talib for you guys and take the Clipse. Don't like em? Good.

skyzoo is pretty good...i copped an album of his a couple months ago where 9th wonder did all of the production.

Lord Willin' was such a good album. The new one just doesn't have the same energy. Disappointing.

Clipse is just the same old tired, regurgitated hip-hop content that has been recycled in oh-so-many ways for the past 8 years or so.
At least guys like Ghostface can flip it up and talk about shit like swimming underwater with mermaids.
These dudes talk about the same old coke/club/pimp shit- for some reason indie kids have adopted them as their equal-opportunity rappers so that when someone asks them if they like hip-hop, they can fire back with, "Yeah, I like Clipse" and know they're validated by their peers.
Sure Clipse has some decent beats, but who wants to listen to someone spit the same old tired garbage?
I'd rather listen to an old Atmosphere, Sage Francis or Wu CD.

"Even while their topics are negative and not diverse, for anyone who's an unbiased fan of hip-hop, they are currently cream of the crop."
I respect your opinion, but that's taking it WAY too far. WAY too far.

Thanks Brian. Finally someone with some sense.
Clipse are the best thing hip hop has going at the moment.
Can't wait for the NYC show. I couldn't get into their CMJ show because it was sold out.

But they are the 'cream'.. As a duo, they effortlessly switch between verses when need be, just a pretty much flawless transition enough that you can't figure out who's rapping at the moment sometimes. Lyrically they are nowhere near as complex as lets say Ghostface(who is?). But as far as one liners and delivery go, they are a force. They change their voices, sometimes dropping the B-Real nasal tone, or over emphasizing it when they are really boasting, speeding and making it simpler off club-type tracks like the 'Sexy Back' remix, etc.
Sure, if you go look at alot of underground mc's, there are much better pound for pound. But as far as mainstream rappers go, Clipse are easily at the upper echelon(which has alot to say towards their talent, and also the state of hip-hop today).
Posted by Reg! | December 20, 2006 2:00 PM
clipse make great hip-hop.
if you have only heard "wamp wamp" or "grindin" you need to listen to more before you judge. while i enjoy both of those songs, i could see how one could easily brush them off, but you need to get into their albums. some of the best hip-hop of the 2000s.
and the "buzz" didn't start a cmj so learn some things before you start criticizing.
keep up the good work brooklynvegan. i'll be at this show definitely. i had to walk away from their last one with ghostface at avalon since the line was so long.

For every fifty thousand limp-ass, hippy-fried, trust-fund, "responsible", arty rap artists out there, there is only one Clipse. Anyone who can't catch the irony and skill in the lyrics and the fuckin cruuucial minimalism and inventiveness of the production are just deaf.
The reason Clipse is hitting the indie scene so hard is not all hype. It's because the indie audience is so far removed from any sort of real violence and struggle that when an almost perfect expression of that comes along in the right kind of ironic slant, they NEED to eat it up.
All those white indie kids at the Clipse show, me included, will be just like those white kids back in the sixties at blues and jazz shows. There ain't no real danger on our streets. We are the danger, we don't experience it. So we gotta go to the other side of the tracks to understand it.
